StellaLyra (GSO) 10 inch Dobsonian Telescope Unboxing and Assembly (same as Zhumell Z10)

- In this video I look at a scope for visual astronomy, unboxing a 10" f/5 Dobsonian Telescope produced branded as StellaLyra. The scope is very similar to those branded as Zhumell, as the Z10 model. The scope originates from GSO in Taiwan, and in the video I open the boxes and follow the assembly process.
Ozzie, Robert Evans took up supernova hunting around 1955, but his first adequate instrument, a 10-inch (25 cm) Newtonian telescope on a Dob mount was assembled in around 1968. He made his first official supernova discovery in 1981 and found nine more before using larger telescopes. Quite the challenge!
THIS is obviously not a "cheap" scope! Everything seems to shout "Quality" !

The 2nd scope I purchased was a used Orion XT10+ Dob that showed up on craigslist. Great views! Too big for my apartment and barely fit into my SUV. Sold it and spent the proceeds on a used SCT. Maybe one day, if I ever have a yard, I'll try a big Dob again
I got one of them back in Feb of 2020. Best Dob on the market for the price at least. I was impressed by the size as well. Mine is also 10 inch. Branded Zhumell.
10 inch newts really make globs come alive..plus spiral detail in m83.. dust lane in n4565, M104 etc will be a treat..Not forgetting bright Jupiter filtered back as hinders belt detail dark blue filter works great..should be better than our 150 maks ..Enjoy

Thanks Garnett, they do look well engineered. I’m following your solar adventures. I may do the same at some stage but funds have gone to the Dob for now.
@@JenhamsAstro I’m actually thoroughly testing different camera combinations etc across the Lunt 40. Getting a full disc image on that filter is not easy. Essentially I’m going to have to recommend the more expensive B600 or B1200 filter. I actually just invested in Lunts modular 80. The awesome thing is it’s an FPL-53 doublet and you can later add the H-a module. It’s a really cool hybrid day/night scope. Purchasing this, along with the flattener, and with Lunt’s trade-up program I will eventually have an 80mm H-a solar scope. Calcium is in the future too. I’m really surprised there’s not more buz on these modulars. I guess they’re not overpriced, undersized, triplets like the ones astrophotochoppers like to promote. Lol. Anyway, I’m really excited about some planetary video with your new Dobsonian. I imagine even untracked that it would be spectacular. I never tried much on my Orion XT8 because there was way too much mirror flop. I had to collimate to specific regions of sky as I moved it. A tilt sensor was necessary. If I tried tightening the clips I got aberrations. A lot of people raved over XT’s but I wasn’t fully convinced. Ed Ting is hard to disagree with and maybe I just had a botched system. Anyway that one you have has major design improvements over the Orion series. I’d love to see how the primary cell housing is engineered. I hope the new gear curse doesn’t ruin your skies. I’ll personally never forget how Orion looks through a 10” Dobsonian. It’s unbelievable.
@@GarnettLeary I’ll look out for your solar conclusions. There is a major shortage of any new kit in the UK at the moment and the Lunt 40 has only recently come off back order. When I was musing I figured the B1200 might be needed but saw conflicting views on the forums so wasn’t sure. Academic as it turned out, for now at least. For dobs, most SW and Bresser kit has a 2/3 month delay. I looked at the XT10 plus but Orion kit is expensive here ( £750 with an RDF!) so I jumped at the StellaLyra. Now even the trolley is out of stock! Hopefully I’ll grab some first planetary video before too long.

I bought a 8” dob from zhumel. I had to shim the focuser to get it to align w the diagonal. I also bought two handled and put them on the mount yokes so i could pick up the whole scope. Just on the limits of my strength. I couldnt pick up a 10”. Congratulations!
Thanks! I can't pick up the 10 in one piece either. I've just got a trolley and am experimenting with moving the whole thing about on it. You can't have too many handles on a scope.
I have just bought the 8” also and I think I will need to shim my focuser as well. I also need to use the extension piece to reach focus for both the 2” and the 1.25”. Are you experiencing the same?
@@Astronurd I was getting very frustrated with collimating my scope until I shimmed the focuser. None of the youtube videos ever mentioned that. I finally figured it out on my own. Yes, I always have to pull my 2" spacers out a bit to get it to focus. I actually made it a bit worse by shortening my tube. I couldn't get my camera to focus through it because I couldn't get the focuser to go IN far enough... So I shortened the tube, got my camera to focus, but now I've got to pull the 2" extender out even farther. Not quite far enough to use a 2nd extender though. It's livable.

Yeah, definitely need a trolly, especially when it's mounted to a nice big EQ8

Looks good. Interesting to see how much use it gets after the novelty wears off. Will it become your first choice or will you end up mostly using the more compact Maks?
I'm expecting that AP with the Maks and my GT81 apo will still be a big interest, but as you say we'll see how the big scope fairs over time vs these. I'm sorting a trolley so it can move in and out of my garage easily; basically essential for regular use.
Wonder if you regret getting the 10 over the 8? I'm trying to decide this myself. Of course, the extra aperture is always desirable, but so many claim the 8 is more manageable from a size/portability standpoint. Thanks for your thoughts.
For me the 10 is bigger than the ideal. The trolley helps but it is still bulky. The OTA can be moved separately though and some people use straps to make this easier. It’s quite a personal choice topic.
Hi Graham, wonderful video. Hope you are enjoying the scope. When shifting the scope without a trolley, can the OTA be placed vertically on the ground? It looks like the collimation knobs project outside the base end, so the entire weight will rest on those knobs. Is it safe to place it that way when trying to move the ota and the base separately. Thanks.
Thanks Krishna. I thought the same thing, but so far after a couple of weeks of use it seems OK. The white locking knobs protrude further than the black collimation knobs, and it has not been substantially knocked off collimation despite being moved on and off the base a few times. I try to stand the OTA on the end pieces of foam from the box, rather than on the ground, so this may help too. I will mention this topic when i make a first light video.
@@JenhamsAstro Thanks Graham. Looking forward to the review video. If possible please try this scenario and let me know if it reaches focus: asi224mc, 1.25 inch nosepiece and 0.5x focal reducer. I wanted to know if there was sufficient infocus available to use the 0.5x reducer. Thanks.
Looks great! Looking forward to more of your thoughts on these units as I have been eyeing up the 8” version mainly as you said the crayford as standard seems good and also I need to be able to move it around the garden and so not sure I could manage that with a 10” :D
Yes, will let you know on the portability issue. The quality of parts looks very good for the price. The focuser has a scratch suggesting some friction or contact but hopefully just a small issue. Tube pivot hardware very solid.

I am a total beginner with a £500 budget. I was thinking of going with the StellaLyra 8" f/6 Dobsonian due to my limited living/storage space.
Would you recommend an 8" Dob? Am I on the right path on my quest to be within the heavens?

Hello Marc, I think an 8” Dob is an excellent choice and more manageable than the 10” (your best scope is the one you use). It can be stored in a relatively small space and has decent aperture. If you are new to visual observing then there are a few things to learn along the way in terms of locating targets and not expecting the view to match Hubble or JWST, but the Dob would be a good place to start. I'm looking at the 8" Stella Lyra dob, I enquired on the Sky Watcher, but those are currently out of stock. First Light Optics recommended me the Stella and said its a superior scope. But I'm currently trying to find some reviews. Not sure if they're similar quality, re-branded or what (I'm a novice)
Hi, basically the same scope is branded elsewhere as a Zhumell Z8, Z10 etc. You will find reviews of those.

I was considering paying £1'200 for the Skywatcher 305P Dob but the Stella Lyra 12 inch'r is £Hundreds cheaper, so i'm kinda torn about which one to buy ?? Thanks, Wes Liverpool UK.
Hi Wesley, there is now a "first light" video where I give my initial impressions of its visual performance. I'm happy with the scope and have only made a couple of tweaks as described in the video. As for a 12" , I'd advise making sure you can move it. After many years of refractors, Maks and smaller Newts, the 10"'s size was a bit of a surprise. It seems like order times are long on many scopes - if the TV is to be believed there must be a few in a shipping crate off Felixstowe!

Hi, initially when researching the SW and Bresser 10"s were on long back order (2-3 months) so when the SL appeared I went for it. Spec wise, the dual speed focuser and RACI finder cover the difference to the SW, so overall it looked like a good deal. So far so good. I'll make another vid on using it soon.
if you make a skytracker for it forastrophotography would you be able to reach like magnitude 20+ pictures?
Honestly i don't know. I believe you can visually see down to about magnitude 14 with a 10"
thanks, I can visually see til mag 6 through my camera lens and can see up to magnitude 13 in my pictures so geuss I could go from 14 to 21 according to that logic since magnitude is logaritmic it would make sense

Does anyone have any recommendations
I've just put a Telrad on mine. I'd say this or similar finder helps a lot to get close to the target, before using the optical finder to fine-tune.
Are you going to do any imaging with it?
Maybe lunar and some planetary but my main aim is visual.
