  • A lot of folks asked if we would do a "Making Of" video for how we were able to create a virtual version of the 1958 Alice in Wonderland dark ride at Disneyland. Here is a walk-through of the steps we took to bring this lost attraction back to life.
    Notes on the Project:
    This project recreates the original version of Disneyland’s “Alice in Wonderland” attraction, which opened in 1958. This unique show was destroyed in 1983 after 25 years, having been visited by millions of Disneyland guests.
    No film or video documentation was found and almost no clear photography, so we have taken creative liberties to fill in the gaps. Some of our efforts may have improved what was originally there. This is true of the soundtrack as well. Our goal was not to create a historical document but to preserve the impression and style of the original.
    The 1958 attraction’s lead designer, Claude Coats, was clearly influenced by carnival spook-house rides and “Tunnels of Love” popular at the time, where the experience was deliberately dark and frightening. The art direction was remarkably crude by today’s standards, which is why the show was gutted to make way for a new version in 1984, which more closely resembled the animated film.
    Our research revealed, for example, that the faces of the White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat and Dormouse were repainted over the years to make them more recognizable and less threatening. The looming figures of a furious Mad Hatter and March Hare were completely replaced at one point to make them less terrorizing.
    Claude Coats’ vision suffered from limited space, budget, and technology, but was remarkable for many reasons and quite worth preserving. Please note that this version of the video does not allow for animated props to move or doors to swing open. The video includes the indoor portion only, as the final third of the ride-the descent down a winding vine of leaves-did not reenter the building for another scene as it does today.
    More information about the creation of this video follows at the end.
    CREDITS FOR THE ORIGINAL ATTRACTION:

    CREDITS FOR VIDEO RE-CREATION:
    Don Carson - Art DirectionDaniel
    Rover Singer - Art Direction
    Karen Thompson - Flower Garden Color Designer
    Heidi Hirsch - Tulgey Wood Color Designer

    *This project is not associated with the Walt Disney Co in any way but is a fan tribute to a much loved classic attraction. Please enjoy this video as a love letter to the Disney parks and the Imagineers that bring these stories to life.

    This is fantastic. I used to bring a small cassette tape recorder into Disneyland in the 70s just to record the rides and I remember during the 70s the Alice attraction was very similar to this. I have been the narrator of a Disney ride for almost the last 30 years, so this kind of thing fascinate me to no end.

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I got all my timing from similar 1970s riders that recorded the attraction. Back then they didn’t sound proof each scene so you could hear everything all at once. The good old days weren’t always THAT great. I wish we could revisit all the the now gone attractions, it is like visiting an archeological dig site and then reliving a time gone by.

      @@DJCarsonCreative In Pirates you can hear all the scenes overlapping each other and I always liked that, but one thing I cannot understand is why in the Fantasyland facelift in the 80s did they remove the upside down room from the Alice ride when it is clearly such a great sight gag? and so nice to see it in the video.

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gargantuaism I agree, the upside-down room is something you just can't otherwise experience in the "real world" and losing it was sad. I do like the larger garden so I guess sacrifices were made. I also really like the more recent additions of projections.

      @@gargantuaism Yes, there was a curved mirror as you first enter the upside down room which inverted your reflection. I have it in my model but the render doesn’t capture the effect.

    Thank you so much both for making the VR ride and explaining how you did it! I hope this sets a precedent for future ride recreations, especially involving Imagineers and official employees at various amusement parks. This seems like a great way to maintain the history of the rides while allowing the physical ones to change and grow over the years.

    3:47 Just to let you know, these cut outs where replacements of the originals because they scared children being mad at them and constantly yelling about how bad there behavior was. Thats where the 'put down' in the ride audio came from. You can see the og in 3:56

    The "Like" button seems insufficient - I wish there was a "Love" button. This project was, in my opinion, one of the best things to come along during the Pandemic. I know you're a busy guy, but is there any chance you've got the itch to do any more Disneyland reconstructions like this? I can think of a couple attractions like this that I would KILL to see ressurected!

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Brandon - I think there is lots of potential to recreate just about any loved and lost attraction, but the access to reference is slim. If we could get our hands on original show set drawings then it would be very possible, for Disney or a small outside group of artists.

      @@DJCarsonCreative I assume you've seen the Adventures Thru Inner Space digital recreation that a fan made years ago? And the Disney-made digital recreation of the Castle Walkthrough for the Sleeping Beauty DVD? Things like that, and now this, make my heart flutter.
      Disney surely has the resources to do this for just about any lost attraction - I can't help but wish they had a section of Disney+ dedicated to the Parks, with a subsection for video ridethroughs of long-done favorites. Perhaps something worth proposing?

      @DJCarsonCreative  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably no other Disneyland dark ride fascinated both Rover and me more than the Alice attraction so we had been collecting images for years. Nearly everything we used came from either obscure corners of the Internet or from fans of Alice that had their own stash of images. Honestly, we didn't ask where they originally got them from we were just happy to have the reference.

      @@DJCarsonCreative Ok, I understand that. This fascinates me more than any other dark ride too, if I'm being honest. 1) I love this project; 2) I tried the VR movie out on TH-cam VR on my Oculus Quest 2, and while it was certainly great, I longed for both faster frame rate and higher resolution. Is there anywhere I can go for a higher-quality playthrough? Thank you for doing this.

    • @DJCarsonCreative
      @DJCarsonCreative  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Greg, Yes there are limits to the resolution on TH-cam 360 videos. I could have exported a VR build of the ride but in the end, I chose TH-cam as a delivery method that could reach the widest audience, including people without VR headsets. In the future, I hope there is a more standard ubiquitous venue for posting VR content, TH-cam for VR experiences as it were.
