I grew up south of ATL in the 80s. There was a rumor that Steve Walsh was looking to buy property in our small neighborhood. One day me and my father were raking leaves in the front yard by the street and a man by himself pulled up and asked about the neighborhood. He got out with his long hair and my father asked him inside for a glass of tea. I knew immediately who he was. He mentioned soon after that he was a musician and thinking about buying one of the lots in our subdivision. They talked for just a few minutes and that was it. But to my surprise just a few months later at age 15 my father said he ran into him again and he gave him 2 tickets for their concert at the Fox theater in Atlanta. And it was the first time I smelled reefer burning! lol This was 1984 Ps. curiously, they did not play Carry On Wayward Son that night for some reason but I still loved the show tremendously.
Elizabeth, this is KANSAS in its prime!!!! Steve shirtless playing congas with all that power in his amazing voice, Robby alternating the violin with tambourine, Rich wearing a tuxedo, Kerry with long hair….everything while keeping amazing tempo, melodies and harmonies….Unfortunately, other things were happening behind doors, and some members of Kansas were struggling with aspects of their lives during this very time….But, this is the picture of Kansas we want to keep in our head!!!!
I will never forget Steve Walsh's on stage performance. Some of the best singing and his handstands on the keyboard while playing keyboards. Saw Kansas on 1/5/1978.

I had the great privilege to see Kansas live three times. They never disappointed . Fantastic showmanship and phenomenal sound. They have been and will remain one of my all time favorite bands
Steve Walsh was incredible to watch in concert. A man in constant motion, he ran all over the place and never stopped. He absolutely gave his all during a show!!
I saw Kansas on this tour in 1980. The short gym shorts and knee socks were the style back then. They put on a really great live show! If you notice when he swats the mic right before that he hit his head on it.
The big "viking" guy, with the massive mane of hair, is the violinist. He really comes out on "Dust in the Wind" but this particular song doesn't have so much violin so he's sticking with playing the tambourine and focusing on back-up vocals.
Thanks for this great live version analysis! Kansas has been my favorite band for over 20 years now, since I was a teenager. I just got to hear them live for the first time last month, and even though they are on their 50th anniversary tour they’ve still GOT IT! It was an amazing concert and I highly recommend catching them live if you’re able. Please do more Kansas reactions!
Its fun too, if you have a vehicle with an actual bumper, you can abruptly stop, just as you barely hit the cart in the middle of the lot, and it will careen across the lot at like 30 mph! Then park, casually get out like nothing happened, and walk into the store:) (I got that from one of the "Naked Gun" movies) Very mature!
@@renegadetenor Yeah, until it careens across the lot and slams into the side of a car, denting it. Really, where do you find parking lots where that isn't a factor?
I am consistently amazed at the explanation of both the description of the singing and of the explanation of the music. It is way beyond my comprehension of music. Thank you Elizabeth!
@@TheCharismaticVoice Yep, it was a guitar fingerpicking exercise that Kerry Livgren came up with for practice and thank god his wife told him that he needed to make it into a song. He doubted the rest of the band would like it, but brought it in and the rest is history.
@@TheCharismaticVoiceshould get into Smashing pumpkins, 1979, tonight, tonight, bullet with butterfly wings, cherub rock. They told Billy Corgan he would never make it in music cause his nasal singing. Back in the early 90s and he's still putting out music
I just love that if you look at them on stage, they all look like they turned up for different events: Walsh going to the gym, Steinhardt going to smoke some weed, Dave Hope going to a wedding, and Kerry Livgren in just a T-Shirt and Jeans like an average man on the street. But they work so well together.
I grew up listening to Kansas and they have many amazing albums, I have never heard a bad song - not even close. Kansas and Boston will alway be my favorites!
It was so awesome to see Kansas get some love from you. One of my all time favorite bands. And I feel.. overlooked and underrated. I saw them on their Audio Visions tour. Steve Walsh would flip all the way over the keyboards and run back around and do it again. I enjoyed your reaction immensely.❤️
According to Music Choice; this is currently the most requested and played song on Rock Radio from the 1970's! Steve Walsh really put Kansas on the map with his range of vocals. You also can't go wrong with a fiddle player in the band! 😀Hopefully, Elizabeth will go down the rabbit hole with other songs by Kansas. I appreciate your tremendous job on all of the analysis you put into your work. That is why I and all of the other Charismatics keep coming back!
Thank You so much for this Elizabeth and Patrons. I am a newer subscriber and was a bit bummed when I did not see any Kansas songs had been analyzed looking through all of them. HUGE fan so again Big Thank You. Another great one is Play The Game Tonight. Amazing talent in this band. Keep up the great work! Pushing 60 but will still jump on the shopping cart. 😁
You really get a sense of a bands talent when you can see them utilizing their full range of instruments, mics, movement, stage presence, showmanship, etc. It's one thing to make a studio album, but this takes it to the stratosphere
Oooohh... Love-Love-Love. Saw them live at least 4 times back in this era. Spectacular band live and in the studio. Yes, please more Kansas! Song for America, Lamplight Symphony would be amazing.
I’m so glad you decided to analyze Kansas, my favorite band, and Steve Walsh, who has such an amazing voice. I’ve been waiting on this one. Please consider next my favorite song., “Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel”.
Hi Elizabeth, I have been following you for a long time, but only commented occasionally. I love that you are discovering with such joy and admiration, the bands that I grew up with in the 60's and 70's as well as some contemporary bands, especially those in the symphonic metal genre which have, along with your enthusiasm, reignited my love for music.
I was so happy to see you finally do a reaction to Kansas! This was one of the greatest prog rock groups ever and Steve Walsh, in his prime, was one of the greatest singers and musicians in the music industry. I hope to see more Kansas reactions in the future!
I saw them in 76. Before they started they asked all the Vietnam vets up on stage and dedicated Wayward Son to them. All of us vets in the audience stood up and saluted them for the whole song. One of my favorite concert memories.
First saw them in 1974! Last saw them in 2023, on their 50th anniversary tour. New members, same tradition. The music will live forever! RIP Robby Steinhardt !
I saw them live in 1992 in Tulsa OK, at a bar called The Ocean Club. The building was round with the stage in the center, the inside of the exterior walls was a salt water aquarium with all kinds of salt water life swimming around. My most memorable concert in my 62 years and close to 500 shows under my belt.
Dickey Betts died today. He was a founding member of hugely influential The Allman Brothers Band. If you are interested or were influenced by them I recommend listening to Ramblin’ Man or Whipping Post by them.
Dickey was overshadowed (unfairly) by Dwayne but was phenomenal in his own right. I'd recommend "One Way Out live at the Fillmore" Dueling guitars and Greg voice is awesome too.
Hey Elizabeth, I'll be 73 in less than a month and I still "jump the cart!" I'm sure it raises eyebrows in our small, rural, NorCal town but I don't care. As the Brandi Carlile Band sings: "You gotta keep your heart young Don't go growin' old before your time has come You can't take back what you have done You gotta keep your heart young"
I saw them live in 02 or something like that, they had the original lineup back and they blew me away. They were touring with Yes and they just killed it. That’s when Yes was touring with the classic line up too.
THANK YOU for choosing this song, and in particular this live version. Steve Walsh is simply amazing - and this has to be one of the BEST LIVE performance by any band, ever. Just unreal - the amount of energy, passion, and skill that went into this live version. Your analysis and reaction was spot on, as usual, and I am thankful for this video,
I saw Kansas during their Audio Visions tour at The Paladium, NY, in 1980. I remember my amazement at such a small intimate venue for a concert and then Steve Walsh's wild keyboard handstands!
Hey, hell yeah! Running and jumping with the shopping cart! Gotta do what we can to stay young at heart. Anyway, yes, totally awesome, as always. I was lucky to see them live on my birthday once, in a small venue, with my Mom. What a show!
Glad to see Kansas finally get on the list. now i hope that some in the future you react to are "song for America", "Miracles out of nowhere" "point of know return" and "journey from mariabronn". I love carry on wayward son and dust in the wind but so many people only know those two songs and this band is so much more than their hits. Hope you enjoy
Steve Walsh is from my home town of St. Joseph, Mo. Born in St. Louis spent most of his time in St. Joe. Met him a long time ago, at a local music store, when the band was White Clover before they merged into Kansas.
Good grief. I'm 64. How did I grow up outside of Camden Point, just 20 miles down I-29 from St. Joe and never knew he was from there until I read your comment? We probably listened to them at the same time on KY102.
Yes Elizabeth, I'm 63 and when I'm returning a grocery cart to the coral, I do that same thing. kicking my feet up in the air. glad you enjoyed this episode of Kansas.
One of your best yet! You provide so much professional commentary, yet you mix in your sense of humor & joy! I love watching these videos with you, Elizabeth! Thank you! 😊

my brother- in law had " Dust in the Wind" played at his funeral . My husband wanted it played at his. Now its gonna bee " Icarus " followed by " Carry On "
Kansas is great! Thank you for reacting to this great video! I've seen them once in a club in Hamburg Germany back in the 80's and they really blew my mind. Please give "Portrait (he knew)" a listen.
Kerry Livgren, the guitarist, is a modern day Mozart. He came in to the studio with the entire song playing in his head. Every note, every instrument, including vocal melody and harmonies. they worked to get the song the way he was hearing it in his head.
My first concert was Kansas and Molly Hatchet at the Boston Garden in the 70s. The singer is amazing live. He was doing handstands on the keyboards. He was all over the place. Great first concert experience.
Future suggestions: Styx - "Blue Collar Man", "Renegade" (you haven't done a Tommy Shaw vocal yet I don't think) Journey - "Lights", "Anyway You Want It" Kansas - "Point of Know Return", "Portrait (He Knew)" Boston - "I Man I'll Never Be", "Don't Look Back", "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" The Cars - "All Mixed Up", "Moving In Stereo", "Bye Bye Love", "Let's Go" (all with Ben Orr on lead vocals)
If you haven't checked out Tommy Shaw and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, do yourself a favor. Start with Angry Young Man/ Foolin' Yourself. What a treat ❤ You will be glad you did. 😊
For Journey vocals, I'd suggest Girl Can't Help It with the harmonies at the end, Good Morning Girl and Happy To Give for soaring Perry melodies, and Mother, Father for a beautiful, powerful song.
I agree with the Tommy Shaw suggestion. He has such a beautiful voice and I would love to hear Elizabeth analyze Tommy's vocals. The Contemporary Youth Orchestra would be a fantastic choice.
I always loved playing keyboards/organ on this song. I was voted most musical in my high-school senior yearbook and several people told me that my singing the harmony on this song while playing both organ and grand piano (sometimes at the same time) with my rock band during a lunchtime concert was one of the reasons. Kansas is always a favorite - my friend Tim played twelve-string and I played synthesizers while we sang Dust In The Wind for a performance during our graduation. Kansas is phenomenal. I will regularly listen to Leftoverture and go straight into Point Of Know Return and start all over again. Such talent by these gentlemen and wonderful memories.
hey lil’ lady Elizabeth, Steve… and actually the whole band, were ANIMALS! each gives their all, in their performances. they were one of the best of their era. there was no need for explosions of fire, or fireworks, in their shows; they brought their own, packaged in their performances! great show, lil’ lady @Elizabeth!!
Kansas was my second concert, but first real big rock concert at age 12 and almost 1 year to the day after this show, so it was pretty much just like this vid. My stepdad was a Kansas fan and I joined right in blown away with the live show. Their music is amazing on so many levels and the lyrics deeply engaging and provocative. Elizabeth is too young to know that those shorts and socks are how we all dressed. I love that in this vid their clothing represents so many aspects of the 70's. The shorts and knee socks, the Levis shirt, tuxedo are all pretty spectacular. I loved the gong! Leftoverture was a staple of my tween and teen years as I indoctrinated my friends too. When one of my top fave cult classic tv shows, Supernatural, used Carry on Wayward Son as the theme song I was thrilled. It's a perfect match.
My wife and I were lucky enough to run into Robby and his wife maybe a year before he died. He was such a gentle, kind guy. We were at an event that had nothing to do with music. The four of us sat around for an hour or so talking about nothing but our pets. The more we talked, the more relaxed Robby and his wife got. Afterwards, I was thinking how funny it was to talk to a member of Kansa and not talk about music at all. Good people.
I think this is the first time i fully watch this performance as i've always sat down on the piano and fiddled around while listening to it. i laughed sooo hard when he pushed that mic....like he's literally doing everything....everything there is ever to do🤣🤣🤣💀💀
Honestly about two months ago now I did have to go to the far end of the store down in empty meat aisle. So I did put one foot on the bottom rung of the cart and use the other to push myself like when I was a kid to get there faster than I could normally walk. It's fun to be a kid every now and again when you know you can be safe doing it.
When I was 14 and heard their second album 'Song for America' I wanted to play drums even more. Now I am 61 and still think Steve is one of the best rock singers ever. He sings like it is the last time he will ever sing again. So thank you for analysis. And it just goes to show that even if your are drummer one should still listen to other inputs because you will hear a nugget of info coming from a singer you never expected. You pointed out that the intro riff resolves after 3 bars of 4/4. You are brilliant. Pay attention folks to what she is talking about.
Not many people know that the guitarist from Kansas kerry livgren, is a devoted Christian. His solo album Decade had Ronnie James dio sing on this album, mask of the great deceiver and live for the king. Kerry is a great guitarist and song writer.
They went rather blatantly Christian on their album, "Audio-Visions," if I recall correctly. Songs like "No One Together," and "A Glimpse of Home" kind of made it clear with their lyrics: As I reach up this ladder There is something ever higher to perceive Like a fire that is burning In my heart I know I surely must believe... However, at that time I had moved on from the death-oriented Christian faith to Buddhism, and found the lyrics and theme turned me off.
@@wayneanderson5293The resurrection is the focal point of Christianity. I know that Catholics always show Christ on the cross. The rest of Christianity show the empty cross. Easter of course is about the empty tomb and the resurrection. Christmas about the birth of the Savior.
@@jamesdellaneve9005 Well, I could be argumentative and say Christmas is simply a relabeling of the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, mixed in with the Norse pagan Yule (shepherds wouldn't be out in the field at night with their flocks of sheep in late December!), but I try to be a good Buddhist. If it works for you, enjoy it.

Kansas in my opinion, is one of the best, if not the best American progressive rock band. Their musicianship and catalog of music is amazing.
Yay...I found the other person who recognizes that. (In my opinion, its not even all that close..)

Same thing with his short lived band Streets who I saw in a club 1983
He looks like he’s on coke, with all that energy. It was an 80’s thing to do.
@@nitro_001newman2 cocaine is a helluva drug...
I saw Kansas on this tour in 1980. The short gym shorts and knee socks were the style back then. They put on a really great live show!
If you notice when he swats the mic right before that he hit his head on it.
I heard that Steve was sponsored by Adidas at the time is one of the reasons for the shorts and socks during the shows
The big "viking" guy, with the massive mane of hair, is the violinist. He really comes out on "Dust in the Wind" but this particular song doesn't have so much violin so he's sticking with playing the tambourine and focusing on back-up vocals.
He was first chair ever since he was a little guy.
man I somehow never put it together they were the same band lmao.
This video is one of favorites to show people... just sooo much to see!
Yes!!! Finally my man Steve gets his due!
All coked up 😂
‘roids be a beast. Don’t get me wrong. I love him. He’s THE Kansas singer. But he’s admitted to bad times.
People should check out his other band "Streets" with the great Mike Slamer on guitar.
AAAAmen!
I do the shopping cart thing too, pushing forward then hanging on the handle. It's good to nurture the inner child!
I’m a 50 years old father of three girls and I still float down the aisle on the shopping cart. 😂

So glad that you analyzed this song, one of my all time favorites! They are a great and underrated band.
I am consistently amazed at the explanation of both the description of the singing and of the explanation of the music.
It is way beyond my comprehension of music.
Thank you Elizabeth!
YES!!👏👏👏👏👍♥️ You're awesome!!❤❤
Heck yes, ELIZABETH, I've seen KANSAS , easily 20 times here, around, Ive seen him do basically a handstand at his organ! They're an amazing band!!
Next Kansas song you do, recommend Dust in the Wind.
Another great Kansas song
I totally didn't know that was Kansas!!!
@TheCharismaticVoice Yup that ballad is Kansas.
I love hearing you break these things down!
Tube socks…relic of the 70s/80s… always appreciate your analysis!
I'm old enough to remember when we dressed like that 😂 Oh I would go back to those days too. Best musical Era ever. Imho.
All he was missing was a matching terrycloth headband for the ensemble.
YA but this was the 70s
I still only wear tube socks. Can’t wear the other types of socks.
@@0okamino For the headband you need Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits.
"Supernatural"--the TV show--fans listened to it for 15 years, I reckon they'd want to hear it again to take a trip down memory lane.

Your views are always interesting and informative. I love what you do.
You really get a sense of a bands talent when you can see them utilizing their full range of instruments, mics, movement, stage presence, showmanship, etc. It's one thing to make a studio album, but this takes it to the stratosphere
He was always like that playing the organ. I saw him basically doing hand stands on the organ while still playing in a fall 1980 show in Nashville.
I was there. It was a great show!
I was just thinking that 'Icarus' would be a great song to study Steve Walsh's voice.

Thank you. This is my favorite Kansas song as well. I'm one of the likes on your comment. Maybe we can get Elizabeth to do this song.
I think Hold On is a great example of their harmonies and beautiful melodies. I especially love the last note!

Love the combination of reactions with musical analysis and performance commentary.
That was awesome! One of my favorite songs of all time! Thanks for the great reaction! 💙✌🤘♥️♥️♥️
Sad news indeed. I hadn't realized he was 80. Please analyze Blue Sky for us Elizabeth.
Absolutely, ABB is a must
Dickey was overshadowed (unfairly) by Dwayne but was phenomenal in his own right. I'd recommend "One Way Out live at the Fillmore" Dueling guitars and Greg voice is awesome too.
Sad news. Love Allman Brothers music. May he RIP. I got to see them years ago, it was a great show.
Whipping Post stands alone as a vocal performance, IMHO! RIP
Hey Elizabeth, I'll be 73 in less than a month and I still "jump the cart!" I'm sure it raises eyebrows in our small, rural, NorCal town but I don't care.
As the Brandi Carlile Band sings:
"You gotta keep your heart young
Don't go growin' old before your time has come
You can't take back what you have done
You gotta keep your heart young"

Kerry Livgren, the guitarist, is a modern day Mozart. He came in to the studio with the entire song playing in his head. Every note, every instrument, including vocal melody and harmonies. they worked to get the song the way he was hearing it in his head.

Kansas in 1977 was my city first concert and they performed just like this. Incredible show.

Steve Walsh is one of my absolute favorite singers. Amazing voice, both tone and skill.
Kansas was my first rock concert. It was the early 80's, Tampa arena, indoors so the air was green. It was amazing.
hey lil’ lady Elizabeth,
Steve… and actually the whole band, were ANIMALS!
each gives their all, in their performances. they were one of the best of their era. there was no need for explosions of fire, or fireworks, in their shows; they brought their own, packaged in their performances!
great show, lil’ lady @Elizabeth!!
They were cutting edge in laser shows though!

"Portrait (He Knew)" is a great Kansas song!👍👍
Agreed. Probably my favorite.

Kansas was my first concert back in 1980 (Audio Visions). Great to see Steve Walsh at that stage of the bands career.
Not many people know that the guitarist from Kansas kerry livgren, is a devoted Christian. His solo album Decade had Ronnie James dio sing on this album, mask of the great deceiver and live for the king. Kerry is a great guitarist and song writer.
That totally makes sense when I hear their beautiful, inspirational lyrics.
I always wondered if their were any Christians in this band.
Thank you.
They went rather blatantly Christian on their album, "Audio-Visions," if I recall correctly. Songs like "No One Together," and "A Glimpse of Home" kind of made it clear with their lyrics:
As I reach up this ladder
There is something ever higher to perceive
Like a fire that is burning
In my heart I know I surely must believe...
