    Great video! Very informative, and most appreciated!
    For washing out ink from natural hair brushes (Raphael, Windsor & Newton Series 7, etc:
    I've had great success cleaning natural brushes with using first, soap and warm water, followed by a cleaning with shampoo (since natural brushes are animal hair). After the shampoo, a shampoo condition makes the hairs soft again. If you have a brush that isn't forming the point so well even after all that, you can do this: 1) Apply shampoo. 2) Without removing the shampoo from the bristles, reform the point by rolling the brush around on a piece of paper or paper towel (or your hand). 3) Once you reformed the point with your shampoo filled bristles, put the brush up on a window ledge or someplace out of the way. 4) Wait 3 days. 5) Rinse out your brush with soap and warm water 6)Apply conditioner, rubbing it into the bristles. 7) Rinse with water to remove the conditioner. 8) Reform the point! This method has worked well for me in regards to cleaning natural inking brushes like Windsor & Newton and Raphaels. I have many brushes, but I still get use out of a Raphael that I bought back in 1997 because I took care of it. Sure, it's lost a bunch of bristles since then, but it's still usable, and that's the point I'm making here. Take care of your good brushes, and they'll last a while. Cheap brushes and synthetics...well your mileage is certain to vary there.The proof is in the pudding, folks. I used one of my 10 year old, well-maintained brushes to ink this just a few days ago: www.lostonwallace.com/Incredible100.jpg

    Seems to work quite well; what i did was was work on the prevention, i had a glass of boiling water with a lot of soap scrapings and i rested the brushes there for a while, then cleaned 'em with a paper towel and that wasn't enough i used tinner. Keep a good care of the brushes, cleaning 'em even if hadn't paint or was goin to paint that day textended their life a lot, and keep a good care of the brushes isn't only well for your miniatures... it's good for your pocket too.

    You can absolutely clean your drybrushes with water... at the end of your painting session.
    I try to make sure I use some brush soap and water at the end of the day so I get longer before needing to use the stronger cleaners.
    Also, using a slightly dampened sponge to clean drybrushes during painting, isn't bad either. Just make sure it's only slightly damp.

    Eep! That cleaner is alcohol based! It is ok as a last resort for dried in acrylic but I prefer Masters' Brush Cleaner as it also a good preserver and restorer. For stubborn old brushes I lather up the Masters cleaner and leave it on overnight (or even longer). Glad to see you use the restorer afterwards. Also top tip for drybrushing you don't have to use lots of paint or lots of force on the brush you just have to remove most of the paint. I only do heavy drybrushing and brush abuse on scenery. And yes you are right about using your hand, it does have enough abrasion to get off the paint but not so much that it damages the bristles and it makes it easier to tell how much force you are using (which shouldn't be a lot).

    You can use hand sanitizer with a decent amount of isopropyl alcohol and it will clean just as well and is a lot less than Valejo Brush Cleaner. Right now Valejo Brush Cleaner is $9.36 plus shipping for a small bottle. Even with today's panic and buying you can get hand sanitizer for $4 shipped at 70ml. Normally you can get it at the dollar store in 70ml quantities for a dollar. So a dollar versus $9.36. The quality and time of cleaning is the same.

    Somewhere along the line, a friend told me about Murphy's Oil Soap. Put it in a jar and let the brushes soak overnight, then wash it out. My kids had completely gunked up a bunch of brushes to the point they were rock hard, and we thought we'd have to throw them away. Tried this trick and it was amazing (for really dried-on paint, I had to scrub the brushes against a scrubbing sponge under running water.) Took some elbow grease on the worst ones but the stuff worked like magic.

    I typically just clean my brushes immediately after using and don’t have this problem. But on occasion, I step away for what is intended to be just a couple minutes and turns into a couple hours. When that does happen and the paint hardens in my brush, I just let it soak in some 99% isopropyl alcohol then soap it to “rehydrate” the bristles. With acrylics, that usually does the trick, but if it’s enamels, it just goes into the circular file (trash).

    • @swordnsteele712
      @swordnsteele712  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Truly, it's best to never allow paint to dry in them; that's doing them the best service 😄
      But yes, besides spinning them in a circle, which is less stressful to the brush than just up and down, the bending of these brushes was to show off the before and after, since you can't feel with your own hands the difference made :)
      Also, a brush restorer following this treatment does well to keep them in good shape :)
