Nah, it's rather cozy to rest, gather signals, buy a packet of shrimp, personally I don't eat shrimp, and leave it out on the porch nearing night time, and wake up in the morning to an empty package of what was shrimp, seems to eat shrimp whatever it is. And eventually wake up to a strange creature spoonfeeding you in your sleep, some weird honey yogurt.
Your a pansy, silent hill music is cozy, darkness is cozy, surrounded by black walls ceilings and floors is cozy, spirits wanderi f the halls is cozy, If you do it right, your never truly alone 👻👽
Honestly with VOTV it gets cozier, the longer you play. The more you get used to the world and the spooks, the easier it is to think about it in a cozier way. Its no longer about "whats out there" and more about "oh look here comes the ghost deer" or "im gonna go visit my ariral neighbors :3" The biggest scare factor in votv is the Unknown, once you take that away, it starts to become fun, and comforting to play.
It's all about the balance, Voices of the Void is one of my favourite video games because of the creepy/comfy factor and the many mysteries it hold within itself
It's cozy at times to bring your guard down and make the scares so much better, which is absolutely the right way to build suspense. In one moment you'll be having fun putting up funny posters and 3D printing a jerma standee until suddenly the lights turn off and you're living in a nightmare the next moment
i always thought i dont have any phobias. voices of the void proved me wrong with intense tingling spine chills and goosebumbs. i know quite a bit about voices of the void and lots of its secrets. each update never failed to amaze me even when i had already encountered most of the events. theres always something you didn't catch before and there are so many dots to be connected.
I’ve always been fascinated by this idea. I often fall asleep to horror movies and find it super comforting, I’m aware that makes me sound like a psychopath
For me playing through the game, the best way to describe trying to protect myself with barricades, cameras and all of that, is to “false sense of security”. I don’t know if locking my doors or barricading vents will actually stop anything. And the cameras? What’s they going to do? Flash a light at the intruder’s eyes? But that’s why I love it. I don’t know if it’s practical, but it definitely helps me mentally feel safer inside the main base.
Voices of The Void does so well at combining so many different tones and genres, with quite a bit of comedy sprinkled throughout. I'm so glad this game is getting the recognition it deserves, even if it's not as popular as things like Lethal Company and such.
You described this perfectly. Despite the horror aspect of the game being pretty simple, it's significantly heightened by its organic appearance in the otherwise tame gameplay. This game is so so good
I usually find the scariest part of horror when I play, is the paranoia that a safe space gives me. there's nothing scarier then feeling safe, and suddenly get proven wrong.
what I also love about voices of the void and its horror is that, especially with later scripted events, not everything is scary once you get to know more about it. for example the main alien species the player deals with in the game, the arirals, are literally just two guys out on vacation on earth and playing pranks on you for funsies, and with the reputation system can even become your allies. every event might me at least frightening at first, but can become more of a spectacle to watch the more you put together the pieces, like with the pig piramid taking care of all the killer wisps later on in the game.
Silent Hill is honestly very cozy for me. A deserted foggy town that people avoid visiting just seems like the perfect place to go escape from everything and experience complete isolation for a while.
Something that helps Voices of The Void feel so cozy is the downtime between events and other horror aspects. A majority of the gameplay is exploring, cleaning, fixing servers, getting hashcodes, signals, daily tasks and decorating, most events and horror aspects are short rarely last more if even 5 minutes, afterwards its back to your routine.
nah i keep doors open with a pot as a door stop so that horrors beyond my compensation (I don get them) can come for tea or because these doors stop literally nothing but kerfur lol
VotV plays many horror tropes and it subverts many horror tropes, but its secret weapon is its atmosphere. It makes you embody the space within the game. It pulls you into it while never letting go of many elements you would expect to be non-diegetic. It dissolves the fourth wall, blurring the line between your reality of playing a video game and Dr Kel's reality of being the most overworked science twink in Swiss history.
i personally like the location and vibe of it - a home in the middle of nowhere, but still somewhat connected to the grid. feels like a den, very cosy. (without considering all of that dangerous stuff that can rip ypur limbs off). i get the same vibe from player's house in Teardown
I can't really say I've ever found comfort in horror before, but after watching this video, I've gotta say that I can understand why someone would, even if I still don't
Another aspect of horror is that at first you feel like you have little competence or any ability to fight back against a foe, there are limited options, but as you gain mastery it can even become something comforting as you know how to deal with these specific threats. Take something like a new player's experience with a zombie in terraria of all things, the damage it deals is high, you have minimal light sources to even see it and you can't abuse doors that the zombie can't open to just ignore it and craft or do whatever else it is you want. It is more of an active threat when safety measures are removed as compared to later when mastery is obtained and you even start to see them more as basically harmless entities that can be completely controlled. You go from something like fighting for your life to quite literally sitting in glowing armour that heals you for more damage than entire hordes of zombies can do to you. At that point, you are the aggressor to those zombies. They can exist without causing damage to you, but if you attack them, that's a senseless choice of violence on your part.
MiSide is a good example of a cozy horror game, throughout the entire game the atmosphere was scary but nothing was actually scary, it's just your waifu, and I really enjoyed it.
Great analysis on VotV. Probably one of my new favorite games, and I corroborate that it's best played blind, as I think, from experience, once you've seen everything and know you've seen everything, the horror begins to wear off a bit. But in the case of VotV, it's all good, because then you can just focus on making a comfy base. One of my favorite things I've done? I made a loft in the main room, right above the emergency shower, I put a TV up there with a (cheated-in) bed, put up some paintings and wallpapers, and bam, comfy space right near the work zone. Anyway, splendid video. :)
I’ve been wanting to play VOTV. But I feel a little intimidated trying to get into it. I love the atmosphere and all the creepy stuff you can find. There’s very few games out there that can nail that sense of mystery and dread that VOTV does. All while being in your cozy base protected from most of the elements. I’ll have to just download it and jump in.
First video I've seen of yours and you have perfectly captured everything that's amazing about VOTV. I constantly go back and rewatch Joel's playthrough. There's just something about watching him specifically play it but also the game itself. I wish more horror games did things like VOTV. I could probably talk forever about VOTV, genuinely amazing game and I'm so glad you covered it so well! This is an amazing video and I cant wait to see more!
Being the big scared boy that I am, horror will never be comfy for me. This video was comfy, but still had all my alarm bells ringing and heebeejeebees running down my spine. Another great video!
I didn't expect to see a video comparing Voices of the Void to Inscryption, but as a fan of both games I can definitely see the similarities in presentation between them. This video itself was a really cozy watch, too!
A year ago I've seen a lot of videos talking about the phenomenon of Voices of the Void... And now, after watching dozens of people play this game, and experiencing it myself; I am surprised not so many people talked about the phenomenon of VotV playthroughs. They always go the same path in the end, and it is hilarious as hell Even my playthrough went from "I don't like you TR_2, why tf do I need to get through a forest to get to you, I'm not going there at night" to "There's a red dot in that forest again, I don't care that I left my atv in the other part of the map, I'm walking there on my own feet until that mf disappears again" I 😮😮
Your commentary is very easy to listen to and engaging. I hope you have continued growth because your content has high quality judging from this video!
Fatal Frame 3's daytime house bits fall into this category I think. I really like the theories you put forth here, and I'm definitely going to be having them in mind while playing horror games.
there should be way more horror games like voices of the void. especially mid-game, i love pulling up a podcast or somerthing like that and playing with it
Have you played any of the fishing horror games? It's a weird genre that certainly has a very cozy vibe, might be up your alley :) Also I always found the foggy version of Silent Hill kinda cozy, especially the Lakeview Hotel 🤔

Almost everything in this game can be terrifying at any point in time. This game is nuts.
I spent an embarrassing amount of time convinced the rocks were the aliens (I'm still not sure they aren't)
There isn't enough videos analyzing VotV. I feel like people forget how weird this game actually is.
