I just saved a 1999 Daihatsu Cuore. It was supposed to be horrible and only good for scraps. Came with no oil, no coolant, loads of rattles. I gave it a look, paid scrap value, had a drive axle replaced, took it for its MOT and it actually got compliments from the mechanic. The thing is in great shape. The rattles are just rattles (exhaust rattling against the bottom of the car, air filter housing rattling a little). It could do with a minor service and an alignment but other than that, the thing is in great shape. Not keeping it, I have no use for it. But drove about 1500km in it in the last month and it's actually a very lovable little car. Shitboxes are the shit.
Also this video knows you know your stuff; I fully expected the Ignis to be the good car out of the two. But no.

To be fair, that Punto is 20 years old and has cleaned up quite nicely. Sporting a few minor dents and scratches is to be expected of a car like that given the age it is.
The Ignis has been beaten every day of it's life, the Great Car Park In The Sky is probably very welcome at this point. To me, tobacco leaves everywhere is worse than dog hair, I can just imagine how absolutely disgusting that car smelt.
I wonder the type of person who owns a car in that state and thinks "This is fine."

I agree about the cigs vs dog. I recently rented a Nissan Rogue from Enterprise while I was between cars for 2 weeks. The “no smoking” Rogue stank only slightly less like an old ash tray than the other 3 vehicles they showed me. I cleaned the tobacco film off the windows and cleaned the plastic surfaces with lemon fresh upholstery cleaner and kept the windows open as much as possible during the rental. It still smelled as bad when I returned it after 2 weeks. I think I’ve heard Matt talking about some kind of odor eating/concealing “bomb”that they use for smelly cars. Pity Enterprise hasn’t heard of it!

Really thin metal, like you could push the roof down with one hand easily, so dead light, and that 1.9 common rail pulled like a train, it felt like it could take off at top speed, which was actually about 120. I think you can pick them up for that money aswell now. Great little cheap motor with a pretty phenomenal engine.

Yes in those days there were plenty of dodgy MOT places, no-one cared about emissions and smoky exhausts, but I approve of all the improvements in regulations and MOTs,driving is much more complex these days. Why call it an MOT, we have not had a ministry of transport for decades and we do not have road tax either.

We actually had a few of that class of vehicle sold here. See the Bedford Rascal, Vauxhall Midi or Piaggio Porter. In the US cars have to be 25 years old before you can import them for some strange reason however here in the UK we can get them imported straight away if you can afford it🤷🏽‍♂️there are quite a few Suzuki Carrys around. We also have a lot of jdm minivans like the nissan elgrand, Toyota vellfire and Alphard and the honda stepwagon the modern ones like 2015 16 hybrid models

So now you're slumming it - and the contrast has made you happy. Don't worry. You'll soon get bored of bangers and be back into flash in no time! Repeat cycle...

This might sound entirely false, but it is 100% true. Myself and a colleague who moved to a different location at work and both started on the same day, parked our cars about half a mile down the road for fear of not being able to park. The colleague who had been there some time knew where to park, and offered to give us both a lift back to our cars after we finished shift, one freezing cold rainy december afternoon several years back. He got in the rear passenger seat and I went to get into the front passenger seat... I say "went", because this chap as lovely as he was LITERALLY used his passenger seat and passenger footwell as a bin, I shit ye not. I had to move a pile of crisp packet wrappers, chocolate bar wrappers, old coke cans and letters from the seat onto what I thought was the footwell floor ontop of the pile of rubbish that was piled high enough up the footwell that my feet couldn't even touch the footwell floor. If you imagine a large bin in a teenager's room not being emptied for an entire month that was probably akin to what it was like.
Made even more amusing by the fact he said "Just to warn you my car is a bit dirty at the moment"... so there was me expecting some crumbs, the odd stained seat and a bit of dirt... but no, this was crisp packet mountain and chocolate mount fiji. Understatment of the century.

It just goes to show that, as expected, the Ignis' issues aren't down to poor reliability, just chronic abuse. That Punto's a great result, and as I learned to drive in an early Mk. 2 3-door, I've good memories.
The Qashqai's plate spells (to me, anyway) pee-eww, which is appropriate given you mentioned the stink of the Ignis around the time it was on camera.

Its almost as if the Italians have worked really hard to improve the cars over time whereas German and Japanese ones have continually cut corners as they know people will keep buying their cars like people keep strangely voting tory..

I owned 3 Puntos myself: a 1998 Mk1 55 S (horrible in every way), a 2004 Mk2 1.3 Multijet (best car I've ever owned) and currently a 2011 Evo 1.3 Multijet (not bad, but the 2004 car was more reliable).

Honestly Matt, that DeWALT inflater is one of the better ones on the market. If the 20v. battery is low, you can use the 12v. DC to power it up, or 110v. AC. (But the 110v. is sold separately.) So you've got three options for using it. Most only let you use the battery-pack. A couple also provide the 12v. option. If your DeWALT charger is a bit old, might want to perhaps consider getting another one.

Hi Matt, I thought I’d mention. I know you most probably know, but if you ever come across an older fiat, this is worth taking note of. One time, my dad’s van fiat doblo just wouldn’t start, the van had been in the family since brand new and is 57 plate. Tried starting wouldn’t turn over, fiats have a ‘immobiliser’ that people aren’t getting aware of. Fiat said they have had calls after calls about this, if you ever come across a fiat not wanting to turn over but battery isn’t flat, turn to click with all lights on dash and turn off and on the headlights on the stork repeatedly. The older fiat we had, you had to turn the key repeatedly between the first few clicks a few times before turning over. Fiat said these are the 2 things the ‘immobiliser’ can be effected by. Of course they’re not made with an immobiliser hence the quotation marks as it’s more a figure of speech as to it not starting.
