I do think a very interesting build is that of the ram, who uses its horns less for side-swipe style hits, and moreso for increasing the damage and knockback of its charging headbutt attack
A ram build with a more defensive underside would be quite good, as the headbutt attack requires start up where your character exposes their stomach. More fur, or fat would help ram builds land devastating blows. Along with that, there could be a really bulky build with wool, fat, and tough skin that would be able to soak up damage, deal with crowds well, and could prevent repeated attacks.
I’ve considered doing a tank build on my next playthrough, and horns were always something that I wanted to try. Thanks for the strategy tips. What would be a good race to go with? Maybe a rhinoceros? With their high constitution, thick skin trait and knockback effect on their horn attack, I feel like it would be a pretty ideal build. One downside to speccing into horns or antlers is that they attract the interest of human players who want to collect them as loot. Some factions are already choosing to spec into smaller tusks or are opting out of tusks all together. It will be interesting to see if any of the other players groups attempt to downsize or drop horns and antlers.
I was surprised you didn't also discuss tusk users in this video. Longer tusks arguably share many similarities in utility as horns and antlers, with the added benefit of giving a boost to digging and xp collection for some builds.
Probably because tusks are part of the teeth build, so he'd have to go over different types of those? ngl, I'd watch one based on all the different types of teeth builds
Also tusks are a tool for feeding quests that can double as weapons in pvp, while both horns an antlers are weapons that sometimes found other uses (like antlers being a part of the reproduction questline of the cervid faction).

One important tradeoff to speccing into horns that was not mentioned here is that due to the heavy and often erratic motion of a player's skull when using headgear weapons the intelligence attribute has to dropped to at least slightly below average to prevent recoil damage to the brain during high impact collisions and swings. While reduced intelligence can often be a small nerf to pay if its allows for extra buffs to more critical survivals traits for your species build it can put you at a disadvantage against predator builds that employ attack strategies that require extra fore planning and anticipation to evade like team attacks or environmental ambush exploits.
This is a bit of a wild claim, you don’t have an analogue for most horned animals , and generally they aren’t any less intelligent the similarly sized animals if not more so? Goats are pretty smart and so are deer, woodpeckers should be vegetables by this logic, but they’re just as smart as other birds their size excluding corvids , what’s this based on besides brain size? Horns have some utility value too in some species. The Bongo's wide outswept horns serve the standard purposes of defense and swag, but their particular shape means that as they walk through their home forests, the horns slowly sweep away at branches along the bongo's usual paths. When they're confronted and want to flee, they simply tuck their horns back and are able to run at full speed through the gap in the brush the horns have created. You get full horn utility in an environment where they are often a major liability.
Another incredibly niche ability of the bongo relates to their pigmentation. Their red colour is actually very loose, and when wet allows them to distinctly mark their trails for other players. This was a weird choice, but became very powerful when human moved in, because when early human players touched bongos they had killed, it stained their hands blood-red for years. The massive morale penalty meant that despite their excellent match-up against other antelopes, the human playerbase refused to target bongos at all until very recently.
"The two main weapons are horns and antlers" Pronghorns: "Are we a joke to you?" Anyway, time for bonus education for viewers! Technically Rhinoceros "horns" aren't horns. Horns are defined as a keratin shell with no tines that grows over a bone core underneath it near the base. Rhinoceros "horns" meanwhile are just a huge protrusion made entirely of keratin without the bone core. Antlers meanwhile are defined as a deciduous bone growth that usually has tines and is shed shortly after its fully grown. In his video he also gave an honorable mention to ossicones at 1:37. Ossicones, the lumpy horn things on Giraffes, are also not horns either. They're bony skull protrusions that get covered in hair and flesh and, unlike antlers, are not shed. As for the Pronghorn mentioned in the beginning of my comment: Pronghorns are kinda like the middle ground between a horn and an antlers and are found only in members of the family Antilocapridae (of which the only surviving member is the North American Pronghorn Antelope). Pronghorns are unique in that they're a keratin shell over a bone core, like a horn, but it possesses tines and the shell is shed and replaced like an antler. Thus it is neither a horn nor an antler, but rather its own catagory.
Horn -a hard permanent outgrowth, often curved and pointed, found in pairs on the heads of cattle, sheep, goats, giraffes, etc. and consisting of a core of bone encased in keratinized skin. -a woolly keratinized outgrowth, occurring singly or one behind another, on the snout of a rhinoceros. -a deer's antler. -a projection resembling a horn on the head of another animal, e.g., a snail's tentacle or the tuft of a horned owl. Definitions can be more generalized than you think. So don't be so quick to correct
I wanted to make a video entirely on pronghorns just because they're super interesting, but sadly stock footage websites are pretty barren when it comes to pronghorn fight clips.

Yeah but there's not any saved gameplay footage, the Internet wasn't as ubiquitous for saving video back then, its hard to talk about something you never played or can't see
3:50 We literally have scrapes on the frills of Triceratops and an injury on the leg of a Tyrannosaur giving outright concrete evidence that they DID use their horns for defense.
On at least one occasion for sure, but I think the question is not "could they be used for defense?" but rather "were they typically used for defense?" Even I would consider biting an animal if it were trying to eat me and put itself close to my mouth, but that in of itself doesn't mean that the usual human game plan is to bite anything the instant it threatens me.
Also, would like to point out some of these dataminers were inaccurate saying early horn users are triceratops. Theres actually a much earlier one, which is zuniceratops.
I honestly wanna see what the hacking community can do with some features, like making an insectoid build that has both an exo and endo skeleton, or a reptile build that can survive in the frozen tundra. Ya know, things that the unaltered gameplay mechanics don't allow.
It is impossible for an exoskeleton user to have an inner skeleton. It would be an interesting idea, yes. But, the reason why inner and exoskeletons exist is for opposite reasons! An inner skeleton exists so a species can have flexible muscles to move fast. An exoskeleton exists to offer armor to the creature, weighing it down, and boosting its defense. This armor needs to be shed when the creature grows bigger. If such a creature were to, somehow, exist that had both it would have such a massive internal pressure that it would be surprising if it had any ability to move, let alone survive. What your thinking of is a creature who has an inner skeleton but gain armor. This is doable. But, with evolution come some passive bonuses that allow for certain builds to exist, effectively. Without these bonuses a skeleton user would been to have a temporary armor set because they literally don't have the muscle strength to sustain the level of pressure. Therefore, starting with a mollusk is the way to go in that case, or some other thing without a skeletal structure. This is so your inner bones don't ache and degrade. Did you know shellfish exist?
You forgot one of the most dangerous aspect of the horns, the HORNY satus effect, this effect differ depending on the character but most of the time, the affected individual will be far more agressive, enraged and will have a 20 perce increase in power , speed and resilience but a 60 percent debuff on intelligence
This is strange. I've never heard anyone talk about the "meta" in this way, and I'm stricken by both anguish and awe. Fair play to you TierZoo... Fair Play.
I don't know, when you think deeply about it it's not that fun. First of all, it is inherently imbalanced, nature doesn't care about fair PVP. Second of all, some builds are super boring but important, like barnacles, jellyfish, worms and the vast majority filter feeders and those short lived small creatures that mass reproduce. Everybody wants to play high tiers, nobody will play the super weak prey that mass reproduce or low tier builds, and without them in the game, how can the fun and powerful high tiers sustain themselves? This leads to another, most important problem: everything is a player. In each footage of a lion getting bodied in this video, there's a thousand insect players we couldn't see. There's not even close to enough people on the planet to play the game and sustain the ecosystems.
This video is so great! I love the on screen chats. Also, with so many clips of cape Buffalo vs Lions, I wonder if you'd ever considered doing a "Famous Rivalries video. In depth stats on both builds, some history, and how the matches usually play?
I'd seriously love an "Are centipedes OP?" video... I consider them one of the most overlooked rogue/assasin classes in the game. The choice of speccing into more legs than any predator grants them incredible speed, their slender form is perfect to access burrows and shortcuts, and their venom makes every confrontation with similar-sized opponents extremely one sided. Not to mention the absolutely massive amazonian giant centipede, that can take down targets much larger than itself.
When Coyote Peterson couldn't tank the damage from a giant centipede bite, given the mad bastard's track record of stinging himself with every insect known to man, then you know it's a build worth checking out.
Always find it odd how they don’t just break, like they do, but surprised it doesn’t happen more often, especially when used in fights and the amount of force behind the strikes

@@MK_ULTRA420 The trick is learning which areas are safe and which aren't. Ironically enough, the more humans there are around you (not very close, but within sight), the safer you tend to be. If it's a comfortable flight away from where humans tend to gather, it's often much less safe.
@@AnotherDuck That makes sense. My American Bald Eagle run was way more fun by comparison. Seagulls were the bullied ones now, and I saw the human-exclusive transport birds flying above me. Also the humans all gave me food and let me look at their lightboxes.
An interesting thought here would be some of the elongated mandibles that insects like some beetles posses. Technically they're the anatomical equivalent of jaws and teeth, deal damage in a way akin to pincers, and have a range of attack/motion more like horns. So it'd be interesting to see how they stack up, I think.
In functionality, they're mostly the same as antlers I think. Most of the time only males grow them, and it's used to defeat rival males when mating (think the rhinoceros beetle, hercules beetle, stagbeetle, etc.).
Off the top of my head, I think the most viable build with prominent skull attachments, may be the elephant, and there are several things worth noting about this. First, very obviously, tusks are not strictly speaking the same thing as horns, and the difference is important: it is much easier to see what you're doing while using tusks, compared to horns, due to the difference in where and how they are mounted relative to the rest of the skull and, particularly, the eyes. Second, the elephant build is even tankier than the rhinoceros, and so compared to its overall bulk, the added weight of a couple of skull attachments doesn't really have that much impact on the speed stat. The question of whether to count the trunk as a skull attachment is another whole topic, but if it is, it's arguably a much better one than horns, though it likely wouldn't work as well on a non-tank build such as an antelope, even if that option were available on the unlock tree, which it currently isn't. (Perhaps the human faction's genetic engineers could try splicing the trait over onto one of their other support classes, but I don't see it being a high priority for them at this point in the meta; I think they are more focused on developing better defenses against the various ultralightweight factions at the moment, particularly virii.) Finally, it's arguable that the thing that success of the elephant faction is closely tied to its high intelligence stat, which for some reason is an unusual choice for a tank build, and one that seems to have worked out rather well for the elephant. So if the elephant's skull-attached weapons have a drawback, it's that it makes them a target for the human faction's ivory poachers.
Long lifespan is also a critical asset of this class, as lower than average reproduction and high growth cost means each member must make the most of their equipment.
A truly successful tank class needs to be smart enough to gauge a threat and engage only when victory is likely without major injury. Elephants also have the added bonus of strong social bonds as a side effect of their higher intelligence and better memory which helps cover the very lengthy vulnerable period inherent to their species massive size. Overall tusks are only one minor facet of the Elephant playstyle, albeit one that can be vital in the right situation. It is a rather curious adaptation given the range inherent in the pre existing trunk if you think about it, you'd think adding some sort of bludgeon or toxic spine to the trunk itself to be usable at safer range would be a much more effective evolutionary path over the long run (scorpion-elephants sound really freaking deadly tbh lol).
As a writer, having this kind of perspective on how animal species work in the event that I need to invent one for a setting is really valuable. Thank you!
There's a stealth hack for the Cervid reproduction quest called the "sneaky fucker" strat. Essentially a male finds a female to complete the quest with, while other males are distracted competeing for party leader, while avoiding direct competition themselves. It's pretty much the standard in the speedrunning community.
Yeah but you can't get too much reproduction score like that. It's good for low-level starters tho, just a bit risky if the party leader catches you, lol.
Really interesting topic! I like the analysis of the horn/antler strategy. Can we get a tier list for cervids and cattle? One of my friends thinks Cape buffalo are higher than bison because they have larger horns, but I think bison are ranked higher because they optimized themselves for cold resistance and endurance
I think the bison will have advantages in high HP & Def, with their thick manes providing a potential bonus to intimidate and resistance to piercing and slash attacks to their necks.

I do think a very interesting build is that of the ram, who uses its horns less for side-swipe style hits, and moreso for increasing the damage and knockback of its charging headbutt attack
Agreed, it’s such a unique build, and I’d love to see other factions spec into the battering combat style
Sucks tho
I think the evolution points spent on the thick skull and concussion damage reduction could be better spent.
Not to mention the herbavore trait means that not only do I get basically free XP from all the plants I’ll be eating, but also that combat is solely for defense. I’m off to start my new playthrough! Wish me luck guys!
Rhino is definitely up there in the meta. Everyone has their weakness. But if you build around your predators you should be fine.

One downside to speccing into horns or antlers is that they attract the interest of human players who want to collect them as loot.
Wait so being dumber makes it harder to get brain damage?

Horns have some utility value too in some species. The Bongo's wide outswept horns serve the standard purposes of defense and swag, but their particular shape means that as they walk through their home forests, the horns slowly sweep away at branches along the bongo's usual paths. When they're confronted and want to flee, they simply tuck their horns back and are able to run at full speed through the gap in the brush the horns have created. You get full horn utility in an environment where they are often a major liability.
th-cam.com/video/3cs6xFlQrEE/w-d-xo.html ,
Awesome! I had never heard of the Bongo faction. Thanks for turning me on to this new play style. Those horns are rad.
"The two main weapons are horns and antlers"
Pronghorns: "Are we a joke to you?"
Anyway, time for bonus education for viewers!
Some players call it "convergent evolution", some players call it "shamelessly copying a working strategy".
In fairness he did say main two, I'm sure there are heaps of cool little subcategories like this. :)
Horn
-a hard permanent outgrowth, often curved and pointed, found in pairs on the heads of cattle, sheep, goats, giraffes, etc. and consisting of a core of bone encased in keratinized skin.

We literally have scrapes on the frills of Triceratops and an injury on the leg of a Tyrannosaur giving outright concrete evidence that they DID use their horns for defense.
Dunno if I'd call that 'concrete.' Not disagreeing with you but yeah.
That's where gene engineering comes in (moral or not)
You also got to love the Speculation community; The future is wild is such a good fan-project, despite it's lackluster graphics.
I think a human build with the brain spread through the body like the octopus, could have a lot less weaknesses and be even more OP.
but like, a build like that insectoid would be practically useless, and birds are essentially reptiles that can survive on the tundra.

Spore 2. We are on it
I don't know, when you think deeply about it it's not that fun.

Love this idea
I'd seriously love an "Are centipedes OP?" video... I consider them one of the most overlooked rogue/assasin classes in the game. The choice of speccing into more legs than any predator grants them incredible speed, their slender form is perfect to access burrows and shortcuts, and their venom makes every confrontation with similar-sized opponents extremely one sided. Not to mention the absolutely massive amazonian giant centipede, that can take down targets much larger than itself.
Or like an ant tier list
When Coyote Peterson couldn't tank the damage from a giant centipede bite, given the mad bastard's track record of stinging himself with every insect known to man, then you know it's a build worth checking out.
They’re actually kinda slow the extra legs are more for balance
Don't forget the centipede's intimidation passive. Both me and my cat are scared of centipedes that aren't even poisonous.
@@Inspectre11 But for some reason once you get more than four legs you start looking creepy as fuck.
The way you introduced the ad was fantastic😂
I prefer the RTS playstyle of the ant faction. Being able to assign lots of tasks to drones is just too useful to pass up.
What's your CPM though? :P
Reminds me of some dope ant RTS game I used to play wish I knew what it was called
@@octaviogonzalez8794 AntCraft would be an awesome game
@@roadrash2005 I had to look it up it was called Empires of the Undergrowth dope game
Lmaooo
Always find it odd how they don’t just break, like they do, but surprised it doesn’t happen more often, especially when used in fights and the amount of force behind the strikes

I love how even in sponsorships, he’s still demoted to the bit. It’s incredible
Devoted?
@@Burneth_ it's too far on keyboard to have done a fat finger typo.
@@jhondoe8495 It could technically still be a typo, but ended up being autocorrected before they posted but yeah. M and V are quite far
@@chrono-glitchwaterlily8776 My headcannon is that OP meant demoted all along. It would be so much funnier that way.
It's only two letters apart on a keyboard cut em some slack
My gosh I love the perfect parry animation for the deer
1:48 the only exception with antlers is Reindeer/Caribou. Both sexes will grow antlers too. Bulls shed them after the rut in November from dropping testosterone levels like normal but Cows drop them just after they calve in the spring. 👍
Oh wow, didn't know that! Cool! (Wonder if it was an evolutionary strategy to be able to scratch snow away from the lichens & mosses they eat? Though as Tierzoo noted, I guess sharp hooves would probably be better at that, so maybe it was for species-wide protection against wolves etc...? 🤔
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 the main purpose of antlers is in sexual selection, so yeah, it's an interesting question why female reindeer have them.
@@matyaskassay4346 if you lived in the same area code as arctic wolves and polar bears, you’d likely invest in that stat too... though in my mind, the number one Dev (God) likely just said “why not”...
@@anna_in_aotearoa3166 could be, maybe they can also use it to scrape lichen or twigs off trees? would be interesting to observe if they used their antlers.
@@AMTheOcarinaPlayer I don't think that's the reason, I mean, females of other deer live together with wolves and bears too, and they don't have antlers. And I don't suppose I have to explain why "why not" is not a good argument, lol.
I'm surprised that tail weapons have nearly disappeared from the meta, other than insect builds. For horn users, a decent tail weapon would solve a lot of its matchup problems.
Scorpions and orcas still use them
tail weapons have been nerfed severely making them less potent
Almost all good tail builds were banned since the restart of the servers on the meteor event, unlease the devs make a patch bringing old ankylo builds, we were prob stay on tools meta for a while
Tail builds were too easy to exploit and threw balance off pretty bad. I’m okay with the update. Orcas don’t even need to use their tails but they’re deadly. That says it all really
The only builds that I know of that were nerfed harder than Large/Tail builds, were Spectral, Psychic, Crystal, and Mineral Body builds.
I didnt expect you to upload so quickly. I was pleasured to give a like. Anyway here's some next video ideas:
1. Are anteaters OP
2. Parasites tier list
3. Eusocial insect tier list
good ideas

Parasites for sure.... great suggestion.
Top tier parasite: 20 year olds still living with their parents.
aren't anteaters blind?
I love how he starts the Horns part with the Black Ops 2 Multiplayer Soundtrack
I used to think that Horns were just accessories for the intimidating factor but they are more than that this is my second playthrough as a Human, at first I chose a Sloth this time anything didn't really change next time I would choose wisely and choose horns for the Speed as well
What was your first playthrough as a human like?!

after watching this I have a strong feeling every animal documentary in which there's a fight should have runescape style lifebars and sound fx
True
THIS PLEASE. As a runescape veteran THIS IS ALL I WANT. I love that this channel uses runescape style edits so much.
That ad read was amazing and so well integrated with the video
I love this channel, because in such a saturated content creation era, this guys is the pure definition of ground breaking. Who would've thought that presenting biology in such a style.
Keep up the great work
Even the sponsor implemented
I instantly liked and subscribed. This is absolutely brilliant. I'm already a fan of nature documentaries but to present one in modern day gaming terms... just brilliant just brilliant. My hats off to you good sir!
Oh maaaan, no wonder these take so much longer than they used to. Soooo many perfectly timed particle effects.
And wow...I found myself saying "OWWWWWW!" every couple seconds in this video. Lions getting FLIPPED, Lions getting impaled, just...A lot of those hits looked EXTREMELY painful. :o
The black ops 2 lobby music in the background brings me back
Looking forward to the insect tier list!
I once played as a deer main a few years ago, and I really enjoyed having bonus piercing damage. I ended up doing really well.
Edit: Wow 59 likes thanks guys!
My bighorn run through was one of my favorites. Such a rush all the way through.
During my duck run I sometimes chilled with deer, but I always had to fly away whenever predators showed up since I had no means of defense. Because I was a noob I ended up getting caught and killed by a human.
One time i was a buck i Was fighting a another buck and our antlears got stuck and a human helped us

I CAN'T GET THIS STUPID... BRANCH OFF! I'M DOOMED. I'M GOING TO-
Oh look a snack.
Intelligence also unlocks the formation ability with allies, which covers the blind spots of spine-aligned weapons.
Tusks might be okay... If the poacher build was nerfed, or better, banned outright.
I don’t understand how you came to that first conclusion, given that elephants have absolutely terrible vision/eye-sight.
The fact that you talk about this like a game and use bo2 music solidifys me subscribing to you
this dude is honestly a legend. i can't clarify whether i'm laughing more or learning more while watching this. 10/10 !
Legend? Burh this dude gets many things wrong.
He says that fish is a "class", even thogh fish is no longer a consistent term.
As a writer, having this kind of perspective on how animal species work in the event that I need to invent one for a setting is really valuable. Thank you!
I love how he explains everything in a video game style
The deer struggling with the branch on its head was so funny
Also Cape buffalo have a higher attack and aggro range where bison have a greater HP.
(I agree with you over your friend)
I think the bison will have advantages in high HP & Def, with their thick manes providing a potential bonus to intimidate and resistance to piercing and slash attacks to their necks.
Black Death all the way
Lol, I was very confused when I heard about “should we equip skull weapons to your character?” so I read your “about” section. Nice creative channel and congrats on such a big growth.
