    Love how turboprops don’t need pushbacks. Also love the sounds when the engines feather and crescendo a few minutes after startup. And then the beta range noise that randomly happens during taxi. Some of the best sounds in aviation.

    More delicious Dash 8 footage! I flew this same route and airline 3 years ago, and by the sound of her voice, I'm pretty sure I had the same flight attendant. Then again, Ravn probably doesn't have many of them

      Yeah, it's a pretty small group. I recently had one who recognized me from one of these Dash 8 flights on their New Pacific 757. It's the same FA's that just commute back and forth.

      Isn't that the truth. I get the same way, and I usually don't care too much for turbo props. But if it's a really nice day and early enough or still enough, it's the best way to fly over nature. I've flown in a two-seater and a turbo prop, and the latter is definitely better.

    I fly a Q400 to my hometown for Christmas in a few days! But this video reminded me of the smaller siblings of the Q400 that used to serve the route, the -100 and -300. Some of the first aviation experiences I remember. Air Canada retired the -100, so I seldom fly that, but sometimes we get lucky with the -300

    Great ass-kicking video! In some respects it's infinitely more interesting than ones made from jets because here we have a variety of engine sounds, get to see the gear retract, come down, and then make contact with the runway, plus we get to see the pitch of the propellers change, etc. None of these things are seen on the more routine jet flights. This flight had a certain drama many of the jet flights lack. As usual, thanks for posting such an entertaining vid.

    Wow--This one was a surprise, and is going to rank as one of my favorites!
    I loved this change of pace, and in a Dash 8 100 at that! For a nearly 30-year-old aircraft, it looked nearly in mint condition inside and out. It
    appears that the airline takes very good care of this bird. The flight attendant sounded very professional, and what other airline would serve
    anything at all, including cookies and juice, on a 17-minute flight? 😮 I'd never heard of Ravn Alaska, but I was very impressed. If I lived in
    Alaska I would definitely try them out in person!
    It looked like an absolutely beautiful Alaska dawn; the best possible flying weather. The view of Ted Stevens Airport on the initial climb out
    was spectacular, and I just love the sound of PW 100 turboprops in the morning! 😁 The flight looked very relaxing and as smooth as silk. That
    Alaska scenery is a feast for the eyes.
    Your videos are always top-notch, but I wanted to give you additional credit in that your equipment, unlike that of many videographers, doesn't seem
    to have the stroboscopic effect on the spinning props that completely distorts the way they appear to the eye. Yours captured them just perfectly.
    All and all, just wonderful work! Thanks again.

      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks my friend. I appreciate all of that, and I appreciate you taking the time to watch and write all of that out. I read every comment, although I don't always have time to reply to all of them. Either way, I really appreciate it when people take time to comment!
      Ravn is a great little airline. As you mentioned, what other airline is going to give out juice and a cookie on a 17 minute flight. Heck, American and Southwest don't do service on 1.5 hour flights now, citing, "not enough time" when they have like 4 or 5 flight attendants. Denver Air Connection is another small airline in the US that has service like this, even on short flights. I wish more airlines were like this.
      And you're right. The weather couldn't have been better. I spent the whole day in Kenai, filming a new series that I'll hopefully debut sometime in Q1 of 2022, and not only was there not a cloud in the sky, but it was dead calm. I hiked through a nature preserve and you could hear every single leaf hitting the ground as they fell from the trees. It was quite the experience.
      Anyways, thanks again my friend! I'm glad you enjoyed this one.

Still quicker than driving though, as Google Maps suggest a road distance of 157 miles and 2 hours 50 mins to get there, longer I guess if the weather isn't playing ball! Keep up the good work my friend, regards from P across the pond :-)

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, we were literally on the ground in Anchorage for more than double the time it takes to fly the route haha. But, like you said, still much faster than a 3 hour drive. I'm not even sure if you can drive between the two in the dead of winter. That's probably not something I'd like to try, even if it is possible. It's even quicker too as Ravn operates differently than standard commercial airlines. They operate as a part 135 airline instead of a part 121 (what most airlines operate under). This allows them to operate without having to go through TSA and Department of Homeland Security rules. So, no security, no lines, etc. You just show up 15 minutes before your flight and hop on. They operate out of a separate terminal at ANC, that isn't connected to the rest of the gates, so you just walk right up to the door for your flight and hop on.

    I can't help but add this: For some reason, I think this is Josie's and the Captain's dream jobs. They really love to serve, and this aircraft was built for this particular type of climate. I'm sure it also handles warmer climates pretty much the same way that other turbo props do, but like the Russian turbo props, this D-8 really has exceptional engines. I wonder how many passengers it holds, and were the seats 2 abreast on either side? All I can say is that I hope if I ever get to go up their to Alaska that I'll be able to use Ravn Airlines and this particular aircraft, because it's just such a nice one.
    Again, thanks for allowing for me to go along for the ride, albeit virtually.
    Heather (or Anna) which is my Baptismal and Singer name.

      I do love flying on small turboprops. Nothing beats the noise their engines make. The DHC-8-100 and 200 both hold 37 passengers in a 2-2 configuration. The restroom is in the front of the cabin by the cockpit door, so that last row has 5 seats across with the regular 2 on each side and then 1 smack in the middle of aisle. I hope you get to visit Alaska and fly on Ravn, it was a great experience! As always, thanks for watching!

      That's true. Honestly, if you'd asked me, I don't think we needed de-iced. And yes, I do have experience in the past from both a pilots perspective and a deicer. I don't pretend to be a professional pilot, but I do have a private license, and I spent 6 years right out of college working for American which involved some aircraft de-icing. Anyways, the plane had just landed from another fight, was only the ground for like 20 minutes before we were all boarded up, and if there was any "ice" on the wing it would've been a tiny, tiny, amount of frost. But, obviously, it wasn't my decision if we deiced or not haha. It was cool to see the process on a turboprop though. Anyways, thanks for watching my friend!

    I just did this flight yesterday at 6 am, we didn't deice and there was snow on the ground and Kenai has snow all over, any explanation on why we didn't deice?
    Another mention this flight was less than half full and it seemed like we launched into the sky quickly

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, deicing is ultimately the captains decision. If you ask me, I don't think we needed de-iced on this flight. But, the captain obviously disagreed haha. And I do have hands on experience in this area. Right out of college, I worked on the ramp for American for a few years, and de-icing planes was part of my job. In the end, it's more about moisture in the air or currently falling over what is already on the ground. There's been many times where I've been on flight where there was snow or ice on the ground that had previously fallen, but the wings were clean so we didn't de-ice. If the air was dry and there wasn't any condensation forming on the wings, then there's no need to de-ice, even if it's cold or your'e in a winter type climate.

    Hello! I was wondering if you can one day book a flight with the new Delta Team USA Livery A330?

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, I'd certainly like to, but it's probably unlikely. I don't "livery chase." In other words, I don't fly to try to intercept special liveries. Any special livery you see on my channel just happened to operate a flight I had booked months in advance. Chasing special liveries is very expensive. See, you don't know where they're going to be until 48 hours or so ahead of time. And then, tickets are extremely expensive when you buy them at the last minute. On top of that, you'd be lucky to even get a good window seat when you buy a ticket that late. So, it's going to cost A LOT, you may not even get a good seat, and if that's not enough, on top of all of that, you're still not guaranteed that aircraft is going to operate the flight. Airlines swap planes around all the time. Sometimes, even just an hour or two before a flight. They do this for all kinds of reasons, but no matter why, now you've spent a lot of money on a last minute ticket, don't have a good seat, and the plane you wanted isn't operating the flight anymore. It's very difficult & expensive to chase specific planes/liveries. Which is why I don't do it. If I worked for the airlines and flew for free it'd be different, but I don't. I pay for everything you see on my channel out of my own pocket. And just to give you an idea. Right now, that aircraft (N411DX) isn't even scheduled to operate any domestic US flights. If I wanted to book a flight on it in the next couple of days I'd have to go to Amsterdam, or Paris and the cheapest ticket is over $1,700. I could book probably 20 domestic flights for that type of money. So, that's the long way of explaining why I don't chase specific planes.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Every so often someone comments something like this. And I'll be honest, I don't know what else you expect me to show. I show the plane, seat, and cabin at the beginning. And those things don't change during the flight, at all. In fact, this plane and its interior is still the same today. So, showing that more than once doesn't make any sense to me. Plus, I was sitting in the bulkhead, so there wasn't anything in front of me but a blank wall. On the other hand, the view outside is constantly changing, and if you were to take this flight today, it would be a completely different view than was presented here in this video. It would always be changing based on the time of year, weather conditions, and what seat you chose. I'm not trying to be rude, but I honestly don't know what you mean by "there's got to be more than just letting the camera run." That's kind of the whole point of my channel. @@sla31 De-icing is less about the ice that forms while on the ground (though that's important, too!) but more about protecting against the formation of ice through the really dangerous portions of low-altitude flight. The decision to de-ice is probably governed by the exact dew-point in the area. The de-icing fluid is purposely designed to be slightly sticky so it provides protection during the climb after takeoff. Just another part of how amazing our airline industry is! It's truly the safest way to travel.

      I'll admit, I was a bit perplexed by the decision to de-ice. The plane had just flown in from Kenai or Homer. It was on the ground for like 20 minutes. There's no way frost built up at any meaningful amount in that time and I didn't see any ice build up on the wings from the approach. So, we used way more fuel than we probably needed to because of that. Still though. Better than the 3 hour drive to get to Kenai.

      They’re called full flights for a reason. I can’t help if it we have to deice and it takes longer than the flight. I post full flights. I make it very convenient with time stamps and chapters to skip to whatever it is you’re interested in watching.

    What ever happened to fasten your seat belts and start the engines and not hear a book read to the passengers. Sounds like this airline expects idiots to fly on their planes.

      More like the federal government. The FAA requires these extensive safety briefings, primarily so that if they get sued, no passenger can claim that they weren’t told what to do in an emergency. I’m sure about 80% of passengers don’t even pay attention, though, and as long as the crew has the emergency procedures Memorized, all is well.

    Rant warning: Sorry, great as this video is (as usual), it has just about every single thing wrong with modern air travel, packed into 58 minutes. Was that 17 effective minutes of airtravel? The rest is why I lost my love of flying. Other than the stunning 17 minutes of actual flight, there was one funny thing: I could have sworn that was Betty White, pretending to be a flight attendant....uncanny voice-similarities :P

      Well, obviously it wouldn't be quite as long if we hadn't de-iced, which frankly I don't know why we did. This plane had just flown in from another flight and was on the ground for less than 30 minutes... If we picked up any frost at all, it would've easily been within the small tolerance given for small amounts of ice. So, I'm with you on that one. I'm not sure why the crew felt the need to de-ice. Take that time out and you're talking about much less time. Still, this is easily a 3+ hour drive and considering you don't have to go through security screening on Ravn Alaska flights, you can literally show up 10 minutes before your flight. So, even with the extended taxi time here, it would still be faster than driving. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoy the videos my friend. Thanks for watching!
