    As a Pens fan, 1991 was something else. First they actually won the Patrick Division--they'd never won any kind of championship before, so that was pretty cool. Then the playoffs started, and since they'd never actually won more than one round I kept expecting them to lose. Go down to the Devils 3 games to 2--I expected them to lose. Lose Game 1 to Washington--I knew they'd lose that series, since they'd never won a second round. They won anyway, and then went down 2-0 to Boston--I knew they wouldn't come back from that; this is the PENGUINS we're talking about. They did anyway, then lost Game 1 to the North Stars in the Final (they lost every Game 1 that year)--here it comes, I thought. Down 1-0 and then 2-1--here it comes, I thought. I expected them to lose Game 6 in Minnesota...of course they would, they were the Penguins. But they crushed the North Stars instead, and I got to wrap my head around something I would have sworn I'd never see: the Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. And now they've won five Cups, and a lot of people dislike them for it, but I have never lost that sense of wonder when it happens. The Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

    It really can't be overstated how incredible that North Stars run was when you consider the ownership mess entering the season and drama with San Jose

    Oh my god! My eyes! XD That jersey is really something else. Minnesota losing Murphy was kinda sad, but a good trade all around.

      I was talking in the sense of the time. Like for the longest time it was said Boston is a bad matchup for Boston against Montreal, but isn't anymore. From 1990 to today it was Pitt was a bad matchup for Washington. (Honestly still could be when you look at the overall playoff series.)

      I can't wait for both the next Washington - Pittsburgh and Boston - Montreal best of sevens. They tend to find a way to play good, exciting hockey against each other no matter who is on each team or how good they are.

    A big part of MIN's playoff success was their powerplay. 35 of 85 goals was PP.
    Brian Propp, 23-8-15-23, all his goals were PP. He had just 5 even strength assists.

    Hard to believe that only two years after that incredible playoff run the North Stars were gone. I remember how excited I was that year watching this North Stars team that had a mediocre season at best play so well in the playoffs. Then this was replaced 2 years later by anger and sadness when they where moved to Dallas by that P.O.S. Norm Green. Can't help but wish they would have come back as the North Stars instead of the Wild, much like Winnipeg returned as the Jets. Oh well.

    This was a great year for Brett Hull. 86 goals all of them amazing (no empty netters. When Gretzky scored 92 he had 4 empty netters). Ive never since seen such a great goal scorer as Hull. Anyone who watched him that year knows that was the best we'll ever see. This was the best time to be a hockey fan.
    However, losing Scott Stevens gutted a great blues team.
    Didnt the sharks start this season?

    As a Oilers fan this 1991 year was a heartbreak the Oilers won the cup last year and a still strong Oilers team with no Gretzky but still lead by Mark Messier 3rd highest player ever in points, and a still strong Oilers group against the up and coming young highly stacked Penguins would have been a fantastic final. Minnesota was lucky and a fluke to make it to the final and they got stomped by the Penguins.

    Down 2 games to none against Boston, after the game Kev Stevens had his head down and told reporters that the Pens would not lose another game to Boston. I thought wow that guy has some balls and that's a ridiculous statement. Then it happened. Mario made Ray Bourque look like a mite when the media was telling us Bourque was possibly the best defensemen of all time.

    Gretzky will probably be the only player to score 2000 points unless someone like Crosby or Ovechkin stays healthy and plays until they're 45 like Jagr.

      Len Kennedy Ovy won't get enough assists for that, and Crosby has suffered too many injuries in his career already.

    • @lenkennedy7488
      @lenkennedy7488 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would take someone to put up 20 100 point seasons or 25 80 point seasons. I think Ovi and Cros both have just over 1100 points at this point and if they both stay healthy and score a point a game they can get there if they play 11 more full seasons. And Conor McJesus just needs about 18 more 100 point seasons to get there.:)

    • @kosmicwizard
      @kosmicwizard 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      McD just has to get 100 points for 18 consecutive seasons and he will have 2000.

    • @lenkennedy7488
      @lenkennedy7488 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think Crosby or Ovechkin will reach 2000 points, but I think they will both finish their careers top 10 scorers of all time. If they play til they're 38 they should score around 1700 points.

    This year was the Bruins best chance to win the Cup. No Edmonton to stop them. North Stars had no business being in the Finals. B's up 2-0 in the Conference Finals and then Ulf Samuelson's hit on Cam Neely ended that.
    Just thinking. If the Bruins had done it this year then Ray Bourque doesn't have to go to Colorado to get that Cup. Andy Moog gets his name on the Cup as the starter for a change. What could have been.

    I remember Winnipeg lost the last game of the year against Vancouver because of a phantom high stick called by the refs during a break in play. Bad luck, Canucks make it in and Jets dont.

    It's a bit of a stretch to call Pittsburgh the best organization in hockey over the last 30 years. They happened to be fortunate enough to be terrible at the right time to draft 2 (and possibly 3 if you include Jagr) "generational" players.
