It blows my mind that with all the finals that Montreal had been in up to that point, it was the first time a Stanley Cup was awarded to a visiting team on Forum ice.
Couple of significant things of note. First, the Flyers .500 record was the first time they failed to have a winning season since 1972 and was the last time they made the playoffs until the strike shortened 1995 season. It was also the last time 2 Canadian teams met in the finals.
It baffles me that apart from Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman and Esposito, Bernie Nicholls (!) is the 5th player in NHL history to reach 150 points in a season.
That was the year Gretzky joined the Kings so he may have had something to do with it (although I've heard conflicting things on whether they played on the same line, but I'd have to imagine Gretzky played a big role).
Montreal and Boston met eight straight years in the playoffs from 1984 to 1992. EIGHT(8)!!! and the met again in 1994 to make it 9 times in 10 years! That's crazy!!
Another shout out for my Red Wings and their haul in the 1989 draft, which basically built the their 1990s defense to go with the offense they already had (and added a huge offensive player too). Maybe the greatest set of draft picks in a single draft ever in any professional sport? First round with Mike Sillinger, who played a 1000 games in the NHL. Bob Boughner was a serviceable NHLer for a few years out of the second round. But in the third round, one of the greatest defensemen ever in Nicklas Lidstrom, who is on the top 100 all-time NHLers list. Fourth round came one the greatest Red Wings ever and also on the top 100 all-time NHLers list, Sergei Fedorov, who had great puck handling and scoring skills and became, under Scotty Bowman, one of the best defensive forwards in the game. Sixth round came Dallas Drake, who also had a solid NHL career and would return to the Wings to help them win the 2008 cup. And all the way down to the 11th round, they got the fierce Vladimir Konstantinov, who if it weren't for a drunk limo driver, was on the way to being a Norris trophy winner and maybe even a Hall of Famer. The Vladinator was the real thing. Most teams would be happy with half that kind of a haul in draft winners, especially that late in the draft.
It is amazing that Calgary could never get another cup especially when you look at the roster that they had in that cup winning season. I mean talk about a stacked team. They had Vernon, Gilmour, Mullen, Nieuwendyk, Suter, MacInnes, and Fleury. That is arguably the core of what should have been the next great NHL dynasty going into the 90s. But sadly, it was never meant to be. Also, it is amusing to see that three different players were seen as the best player in the league in Gretzky, Lemieux, and Yzerman.
After 1989 Calgary didn't win another playoff round until 2004. Apart from 1991/1992 when they missed the playoffs they had great regular seasons up until 1995 but always screwed up in the first round.
It was a strange year for the Flames having to finish 1st place in the division and 1st place overall only to win the Cup for one year and completely fall to the Kings the following year and then a few more first round exits and out of the playoffs a season later...Had they won the Cup in '86 then they would've kept a dynasty team intact.!!!
Amazing battle of Pennsylvania! PHI-PIT 4-3 31-24 3-4 4-2 3-4 4-1 7-10 6-2 4-1 In the 5th game Mario scores 5 goals, 4 in the 1st. He tied a record for most goals in a playoff game period set by Tim Kerr -85. Mario 7-9-5-14 Tim 7-10-5-15 Against WAS Tim Kerr had 6-4-6-10. That's 13-14-11-25 in 2 rounds before going scoreless against MON. Led all players right up til the finals...
I just did some investigating, looking at 4 year period for Oilers/Kings. 1986-87 Oilers 50wins, 372 goals, Gretzky 75 points more than the next best in the NHL 1986-87 Kings 31wins, 318 goals, No Gretzky 1987-88 Oilers 44wins, 363 goals, Gretzky 18 + points (in 64 games) second to Lemuiex 1987-88 Kings 30wins, 318 goals, No Gretzky Gretzky traded. 1988-89 Oilers 38wins, 325 goals, No Gretzky (down 6-12 wins, down 38-47 goals) 1988-89 Kings 42wins, 376 goals, Gretzky 13 + points (second to Lemuiex) 1989-90 Oilers 38wins, 315 goals, No Gretzky (down 6-12 wins, down 38-57 goals) 1989-90 Kings 34wins, 338 goals, Gretzky 13+ points (second to Lemuiex) This shows that Getzky wasn't quite as dominate post 1988 or even 1987, but he was still great. The Kings improved with him as the main piece by 12 wins and then 4 and their total goals increased by 58 and 20. The Oilers subtract 6 to 12 wins and between 38-57 goals. I'm an Oiler fan and don't think they should have ever traded/sold him, but I actually think they traded/sold him at the right time, they just didn't get enough back for him, which is almost impossible. I'd argue to get equal value for him in 88' you'd needed the equivalent of about three all-stars/lower level HOFers + $ and some futures for the trade to be equal and the Oil didn't get that.
Calgary is my number one no matter what and it is so depressing never seeing Calgary truly win another cup only clinging onto the fact that the puck crossed the line in OT in game 6 2004 and there’s no names, I have even heard being reported on tsn in 2010 that they made a mistake for not reviewing that goal and stopping play and I’ve even seen officials admit that that should have been the series, but I feel like it was better for the interest of the league to have Tampa win the cup with the names that were on that 04 Tampa team but I think iginla and kippersoft deserved that cup as well as gellinas and Craig Conroy so many names on the flames team that have no cup to their name but 100% deserve it because like I stated before people have ADMITTED that Calgary won the cup that year
Montreal was one of the greatest teams ever that went to a final and didn't win the Cup. There was no question who were the top two teams in the league that season. And still Calgary almost got the boot round 1. We'd probably have a Habs/Hawks final in 1989 if Vernon didn't stand on his head in OT.
What gives you the ability to know that no one will ever score five different ways in a game again? Have you traveled in time to the end of NHL? Wouldn't it make more mathematical sense to say its unlikely or lottery like odds for it to be done so. The laws of physics to me state it is possible to happen in the future.
I agree. No one's perfect and I prefer it when anyone (not only Shannon) talking hockey qualifies such statements with "I think". Nothing wrong with that. Though in this day and age we're all about precis and getting info out as quickly as possible. I just assume he means "I think." I think he's right though. In the hundred-year history of the league it's the only time it's ever happened and we're in an era where scoring's down quite a lot relative to then.
It had never happened before and it hasn't happened since. Hasn't even come close. As was said, there might be half dozen penalty shots in a season if that so that's the biggest hurdle.
A series of terrible trades, mediocre coaching, and a less than brilliant general manager helped bring about the demise of the Flames as a future Stanley Cup contender.
Yea I always saw it as just an oddity that it was 5 different ways not something that enhances the achievement. Just scoring 5 goals in a game is amazing
Tanti had a laser beam slapper labeled for the top corner that Vernon snagged too. Amazing Also check out the save McLean made on Mullen in OT. If Vancouver wins the game, that would've been remembered as "The Save" 1.0

155 points wasn't just the most in Yzerman's career, it was the most in a single-season by anyone other than Lemieux or Gretzky
@@nbtful I heard they played on different lines but the opposition would focus on Gretzky, which allowed him to score at will (seemingly).
Montreal and Boston met eight straight years in the playoffs from 1984 to 1992. EIGHT(8)!!! and the met again in 1994 to make it 9 times in 10 years! That's crazy!!
I've enjoyed these this summer. Thank you

Did he completely skip cal v van and la v edm???? Memories of it must have been to much for him
he talk about Cal Van later but he doesn't discuss LA EDM at all.

It makes me extremely sad and I ain't even a fan of the Calgary Flames. It's a big old shame.
How can you not win another with that core? Was defence their achilles' heel or what?
After 1989 Calgary didn't win another playoff round until 2004. Apart from 1991/1992 when they missed the playoffs they had great regular seasons up until 1995 but always screwed up in the first round.

Ouch!

Title of video talks about first round scare, Shannon almost forgets to talk about it by skipping the Smythe DSFs...
Amazing battle of Pennsylvania!

Gretzky traded.
1988-89 Oilers 38wins, 325 goals, No Gretzky (down 6-12 wins, down 38-47 goals)
1988-89 Kings 42wins, 376 goals, Gretzky 13 + points (second to Lemuiex)
1989-90 Oilers 38wins, 315 goals, No Gretzky (down 6-12 wins, down 38-57 goals)

Great year- i watched a lot!!!Was super happy for the Flames!!!!
Maybe I'll see Calgary win another Stanley Cup one day. I wouldn't be opposed to it.
Try being a Flyers fan. I haven't seen a championship since I was 10 but it could be worse for the both of us. We could be Leafs fans.
"Every time i see Boston lose to Montreal, i die a little inside"...yeah, thats how Caps fans felt with Pittsburgh until 2018.
How Mets fans feel about Atlanta...(not to change the subject/sport)
Love it! Best thing on TH-cam!

All time Vancouver Canucks great Mats Sundin

Great video with Mario records! 👍
Calgary has only won 1 Stanley Cup, but they have won a lot of Grey Cups before and after 1989 by the Stampeders most recently in 2018.
4 players scored 150 points! Will never happen again...
The only time with 3 different players for Hart, Pearson and 1st all-star team.

A LOT to talk about offense-wise in 88-89, but my favorite might be Mario's 44 points in the first 14 games. Just nuts.
Lemieux should had won the hart trophy this year!. 199 points for fucking sake!.
Gretzky single handedly made the Kings relevant for the first time in years. It was his award.
"Barry Beck came out of nowhere"? He was the second overall pick in his draft.
yeah, and he didn't even play the 88-89 season. soooo there's that, too.
lowkey the hockey dad part is shannon to his kids
Maybe you could make a video about it - the could-have-been dynasties sho ended up only winning once or even nothing.
betteman would probably resign as commissior of the nhl if their is an all canadian finals
Yes it happen to be the last time two Canadian teams met in a Stanley Cup Final...boohooo!!! Gary Bettman !!!
I may or may not be the dad from the story. 😈
A series of terrible trades, mediocre coaching, and a less than brilliant general manager helped bring about the demise of the Flames as a future Stanley Cup contender.
He kicked the puck in ...stop
5 goals 5 ways could probably happen again
Yea I always saw it as just an oddity that it was 5 different ways not something that enhances the achievement. Just scoring 5 goals in a game is amazing
😊
If only Smyl scored on his breakaway in OT
Tanti had a laser beam slapper labeled for the top corner that Vernon snagged too. Amazing
Also check out the save McLean made on Mullen in OT. If Vancouver wins the game, that would've been remembered as "The Save" 1.0
Hockey
What the Capitals getting upset after winning their division? I’m sure that won’t happen again
Cmon Shannon dont need all that Penguin hate.
I hated this year. I was barely alive the last time Montreal lost a Stanley Cup final... 1967.
Boooooooooo.
Joel Otto's OT game winner shouldn't have counted
It wasn't a kick
