- I couldn't find any videos of what is required before applying for the Maine Home Food License so I am happy to share my experience and how I set my kitchen up to pass inspection!
-Keep in mind, the Maine Home Food Permit allows you to sell non hazardous foods to the public, wholesale, online and in retail settings.
-If you are interested in selling foods with meat, dairy or frozen goods and hot foods you must apply for a commercial food license which is different and comes with additional rules/regulations.
-The Maine Food Sovereignty Ordinance is an ordinance that towns in Maine can adopt to allow its residents to produce and sell any foods (except meat and poultry) person to person without any permits, government interference or regulations.
Basic things your inspector will look for in the home kitchen license:
Proper Labeling
Refrigerator Holding Food at Proper Temperature
Easy to Clean Floors, Walls and Ceilings
Either a 2 bay sink or 1 sink and a dishwasher
Hot water temperature of 100-110 degrees with adequate pressure
Well water must be tested for coliform and nitrates annually
Exterior Septic Inspection with report saying the system is functioning correctly and is suitable for the extra use due to the nature of the business
All acidified foods such as pickles,hot sauce,tomato sauce, relish and bbq sauce must be sent for testing
A way to sanitize dishes and utensils, either by soaking in sanitizing solution or sanitizing feature on dishwasher.
There may be more requirements depending on your inspector and any rules that may change from the time I posted this video.
