    Back in the day concerts were like an organism, fans would come out in hordes and show their love and adulation for a band, in return they were showered with all the band could give. It really was THE best time for music.
    Thank you brother for these wonderful strolls done music's memory lane.

    Phenomenal! I am so glad you watched the live version. I never knew a brother was singing this either. Then 3 drummers, the guitarist rocked out and then the brother who was singing and playing piano starts playing the saxophone. My mind is blown.

    "The Brother", Cornelius Bumpus, was singing Tom Johnston's part in this performance because Tom had had to leave the band due to health reasons. (He had nearly died from a bleeding ulcer and had to be hospitalized on the eve of a major tour in 1975, which is how Michael McDonald became their front man; Jeff Baxter, formerly of Steely Dan, suggested McDonald as a replacement.) McDonald is a talented singer, to be sure, but his vocal range generally can't go *quite* that low. :D

    • @ballyastrocade5672
      @ballyastrocade5672 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @greenmean1 Yeah, it seems like a lot of people have kind of forgotten the circumstances behind why Johnston was replaced with McDonald back then. :-) It wasn't like the record label made them do it; it was literally a life-and-death issue of Johnston having to go into the hospital RIGHT NOW, and there simply was no way he could have continued with the band.
      Fortunately for us, he did regain his health, and rejoined the band when they got back together in the early 90s, and has been with them ever since. :) They're on their 50th-anniversary tour this year (or were supposed to be, before the virus hit), and I'm hoping I'll still get to see them later this year, as McDonald is joining them on this tour and they'll have both Tom *and* Michael performing. That should be epic!

    I saw the Doobie Brothers in Montgomery, AL at the Civic Center in July 1977. They were touring in support of their album "Living on the Fault Line"- the second album with Michael McDonald front and center. I was a mere 15 years old but it was still a transformative experience for me. I've been to many concerts since, but none of them were as electric as the Doobies.
    I plan to see them next year in Raleigh- oddly enough, it's on the same date as my '77 concert. I so wish Tiran Porter was still with the band, along with Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, John Hartman, Keith Knudsen and Bobby LaKind. Still, Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons and Michael McDonald will be there- I can't wait!

      Some interesting history from the WIKI:
      The American band The Doobie Brothers has had a plethora of members since its inception in 1970, including guitarist/singer Tom Johnston and keyboardist/singer Michael McDonald. The Doobie Brothers employ official members and a small group of touring musicians, usually with a core group shown in promotional material. Guitarist/singer Patrick Simmons is the only constant member of the group, and the only one who has appeared on all of their releases.
