According to Ron Moore we have Helo to thank for the show becoming a series. When they were pitching potential storylines to the network for a regular series, the execs weren’t feeling any of his ideas, and he could see he was losing the room. He just threw out, “Oh, and we’re going to pick up with Helo on Caprica,” and the execs sat up in their chairs and were suddenly interested.

'33' is one of the best opening episodes ever (yes, obviously there was the miniseries before it). Such a killer premise, so tightly executed. Glad you guys are loving the show, BSG is one of my all-time favorites! I once was on a bus trip in West Africa that was supposed to take 24 hours and wound up taking 54 hours. Because of all the commotion, people talking all day and night, the bus running out of gas in the middle of nowhere, and wild chickens (seriously) running up and down the aisle, I couldn't sleep at all those 54 hours. By the end I was somewhere between a zombie and nervous delirium. It is wild how something like sleep deprivation can so quickly push you to the edge of sanity. Every time I think of 33 I also think of that damn bus.

Ronald Moore said that in the Podcast of the series. They had to remove the people in the windows of the ship. They though left in shadows, so you can feel something is moving inside the ship.

Yes, in the original series they tried to find Earth. I loved it as a child. Lorne Greene (Pa Cartright from Bonanza) played Adama, Dirk Benedict (A-Team) was Starbuck, Richard Hatch who plays Zarek later in this series was Apollo. Boomer was a black guy, Baltar was cartoonish evil. And the space battles were awesome for the late 70s !

No no- there were 5251 survivors from Sagittaron in the Fleet. FUN FACT: Apollo absolutely saw people aboard the Olympic Carrier; those 1300 people were alive and human. Executive meddling decided it was too dark and wanted it (at least) nebulous...
Cylons know that they are machines. But they look human inside and outside also they eat, sleep and frak just like regular folks. Heck Boomer was on the Galactica for years getting regular physicals just like everyone else. After a while it's hard to think of them as JUST machines.

20:50 - "Bro, you can't just keep killing your bodies - you've only got 12." There are 12 MODELS - there's no limit to the number of bodies available for each of those 12.
the first BG tv series is not from the 60s it's from 1978 and it's way different from this. this is way way better and I'm saying this because I watched both.
Love that you guys are watching and reacting to this. Gonna be fun for me to “re-watch” it with you like I did with Buffy! Loved this series and how the creators took what was once a campier 70’s series and made it into one of my all-time favorite series. You guys are gonna have fun with it! (Note about Easter Eggs - I know Micky mentioned the old-school cylon from the series. Other interesting things: The vipers that Kara and Lee are flying are the models used in the original 70’s series. Also, the Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer call signs were the actual characters’ real names in the original series. And one more call back - the cylon raiders (the robot fighter ships) were actually ships piloted by three cylons in the original)
Original BSG was at around the same time(after) as Star Wars. They actually put the original in the movie theater after it showed on TV. They actually made 2 shows with one being slightly in the future.
The longest I have ever been awake is six days straight. I had a chest infection of some sort that kept me from lying down or reclining to sleep, and it wasn't until I made it to six days that the hospital gave me something that worked. Day two you get the feeling of spiders behind your eyes. Day three, the contrast and shadows goes crazy. Day four, you start to dream while you're awake. Day five, your memory starts to get weird and your sense of time is completely shot. By day six, you no longer feel tired and you're essentially just hallucinating whenever you're not focused on something immediately in front of you.
It's always entertaining watching people experiencing BSG, so I'll be alongside Micky, anticipating things (don't be tempted to answer too many queries).
26:45 It was explained in the second part of the miniseries that the Cylons had compromised the Command Navigation Program (CNP) created by Doctor Baltar and loaded into all networked Colonial vessels which creates a back-door for the Cylons to get into the ship's computer system and literally cause them to shut down, leaving any vessel with the CNP vulnerable. Lt Gaeta was talking to Baltar about this just prior to Head Six pointing out the Cylon device in Galactica's CIC.
The original Battlestar Galactica ran on TV from 1978-1979, jumping on the world-wide mania Star Wars created the previous year, 1977 -- not the 60s -- with a spin-off/sequel was in 1980. And yeah, don't watch the opening credits once the drums start, it's so dumb that they chose to put spoiler clips in up front. Rana - there are 12 *models* of Cylons, as the message to Adama said - not 12 bodies. You've meet the Sixth model, the Sharon model, the Aaron model, and the guy who was in the ammunitions depot who had a fistfight with Commander Adama. (I can't remember if they used a number or name or what to identify him so I don't want to spoil anything). Remember you saw a bunch of them walk into the ammunitions depot at the end of the miniseries. Mary McDonnell (President Roslin) was *not* in the West Wing, but she was in Independence Day.
Even though we know how the war ends leading to 40 years of peace before they show up again!! I think a new series filmed like this one was set during the original war would be really awesome
I only watched the miniseries after the full series (cos I received this on dvd and it wasn’t included), and lemme tell you: this episode fucking SLAPS as a raw introductory episode.
I've never been confused about why Six killed that baby. I don't think she "accidentally" snapped its neck. She knew an attack was coming and put it out of its misery because she does seem to want a baby.
Yes, the intro to each episode has a quick montage of scenes from that episode... I love the show but that was a really dumb choice. The original plan was for Apollo to see people in the windows on the Olympic Carrier but after seeing the edit with that in the episode, they decided it was too grim if we know for sure that they were forced to murder all those people.
@@NoellaScottMost reactors I’ve watched do that as well. It’s a bit harmless early on, gets you excited for how those images transpire, but as the show goes on those intro flashes get more and more outright spoilery with big moments.
So, as many others have pointed out already, this show was really close to right after 9/11. It has a lot of dark themes, and this is one of them. You can see the similarities to the issue around 9/11 if you were old enough to remember it happening. The pictures on the walls of people looking for loved ones who might have survived or are missing. That's straight out of 9/11 when people were posting pictures of their loved ones that they haven't heard from yet. Huge walls with pictures and phone numbers were set up so that if anyone sees them, or if they see the message themselves, that they get in contact with the family to let them know they're alright. Most of those pictures ended up just being pictures of people who had perished inside the towers. The Olympic Carrier was another nod to 9/11, as during the whole event the US had shut down airspace and detected another airliner in the air still, United Air Flight 93. It was taken over by hijackers and was headed towards DC. There were conversations taking place on if it should be shot down or not if it started getting too close to DC or any population centers. The plane ultimately crashed when the passengers went to fight off the hijackers. Still, the Olympic Carrier is a slightly similar version of the same dilemma. A civilian ship, almost certainly taken over by the enemy, carrying with it the ability to cause massive damage if it gets close to you. It's not stopping, not changing course, and is an immediate threat. In the original cut of the show Apollo is able to see people inside. So that made the situation even more heartbreaking, because it WAS the right decision to take it out. It just meant that he had to be personally responsible for the deaths of likely over a thousand people. It's the same feeling the pilots charged with shooting down Flight 93 would have had to deal with. It's a shitty choice among nothing but more shitty choices to pick from.
From Dune to Terminator to The Matrix, you'd think that the old robots- taking-over thing would be tired. But nope. It's as fresh as ever when the writing is this good!
It was in the late '70s, It was just after Star wars came out. It was very cheesy, but not to a 10-year-old. The reboot is everything I thought the original was when I was a kid. The song that played when the presentation was going on early in the reboot, was the music from the original Battlestar Galactica. It was the theme song. It brought everyone like me back to our childhood pretending to be colonial warriors and or viper pilots. There was a season called Battlestar 1980, you can guess what year it came out, where they actually reached Earth. Dirk Benedict who played Starbucks in the original series was only in one episode, where they told the story of what happened to him. In case you ever get to watch it. I'm not going to provide any spoilers. Katee Sackroff did not know that Starbuck was a male character, she was excited to play the role, not knowing what Battlestar Galactica was really about yet, but only knowing that it was sci-fi and she is a sci-fi geek. She told her dad and he said have you seen the original series yet? She said no. He told her to rent it and watch it and get back to him. A few weeks later they spoke again, he asked her if she'd seen it yet, she said no, he told her once again. Please watch it and then call me back. She finally did as asked, and then she was talking to her dad and he said what do you think of Starbuck. She said I didn't see Starbuck in there, did they not have her in it? To which he responded? Yes you did see him, it was the viper pilot paired up with Apollo. To which she was completely shocked. She definitely made that part her own though, she reminds me of my daughter, especially when she plays Starbuck in the miniseries that preceded it all + decked the XO when he flipped the table. I showed that to my daughter and she agreed, yeah that's me. My daughter is just that tough. Anyway, my son and I are both excited to watch you go through this series, and one other note that's not a spoiler, the first scene filmed was so say we all. EO saw a lackluster response to so say we all and he started yelling it to get everyone fired up. I can't wait for you to get to my favorite episode, it is the most brilliant sci-fi strategy ever, that's all I'm going to say, I can't wait to comment after you watch it.
8:24 That's the second time i spotted a woman in the background, wearing that outfit that looks like it belongs in 2001 (minus the giant showercap) Or is it just me?😄
I've seen the show in full, but if I hadn't, I guess at this point you have to hope that some of the ships might really be freighters that basically deliver space Valmart or Vacuum Costco or whatever the Colonial equivalent, and might have some supplies. Food seems like the biggest problem, any fresh produce will spoil quickly, so even if it could feed a million people for a month, it only lasts a few days. Maybe t hey have good refigrators or something. When rearming at Ragnar station, they really only talked about military stuff, but maybe there had some military rations to take aboard, too. Still, it's gonna be a problem. And we're not on the Federation ship Voyager where we have replicators and holodecks and stuff.
25:53 the whatever channel that was airing BSG at the time didn't let them. because it was apparently too dark for a show that was about total human nuclear genocide.
So happy to see that you've finally decided to watch Battlestar Galactica! It's the best sci-fi series ever IMO. It's going to take all of you on emotional highs and the lowest of lows! Allot of grey area stuff. On a side note, the actor who plays the CAG, Micheal Hogan has a brain injury. Say a prayer for him!
I mighty get this a little wrong as I watched it in a documentary a year or more ago but after the filming of Star Wars Lucas knew it would take awhile before he would be ready to put ILM back to work on production of what would become Empire Strikes Back. The guy he had hired to assemble the people that worked on Star Wars wanted to keep the people together and used a lot of them and ILM equipment to work on the BSG mini-series in '78. Wiki says he formed a separate company to do this but I thought the show I watched left that out and he claimed Lucas was okay with him using the team and ILM equipment to keep them together until ESB was ready to go into production. Anyway when BSG came out Lucas and the star wars studio weren't too happy with it and sued and if I remember correctly it terminated the working relationship between Lucas and his former head of ILM who wanted to keep working on the now greenlit BSG series.
The original show has similarities (Cylons attack, Humanity on the run), but this show made a lot of changes. For example the original show didn't have human model Cylons. Also Starbuck and Boomer were men in the original, which was probably one of the first big internet outrages against gender swapping. But Katie did so well she quickly shut down any worries. And the twist of Boomer being a sleeper agent hit so hard for fans of the original who had Boomer as their fav character
In Galactica 1980 (which most of us OG fans hated) they did introduce a human looking Cylon. However, despite looking like a person on the outside I believe it was mechanical on the inside.
"Why does it have to be that close every time!?" Because they have to stop shooting flak prior to jump so of course that's going to allow the constant barrage of missiles to get close
We officially made it to Season 1!!! We're 6 episodes ahead on our website though. So, if you can't wait, you know where to go!! thenormies.com/

It's twelve models not twelve units. Twelve models with infinite spawning into new units.
The Viper Mk II’s are also the original Vipers from the original tv series. Also, the boy Boxxy from the miniseries was a main character on the show.
I'm not allowed to go to those type of websites.
Did you all notice how much Rian Johnson plagiarised Battlestar Galactica, and this episode in particular, in the main plot line of the Last Jedi?
Helo was supposed to be a one-off character during the miniseries, but everyone liked him so much they brought him back for the main show!

I always remember the bee episode from the original show. It was so creepy and weird😂
This is the 9/11 allegory to end all allegories. Perfectly executed, incredible tension, no clear answers.
Original BSG was at around the same time(after) as Star Wars. They actually put the original in the movie theater after it showed on TV. They actually made 2 shows with one being slightly in the future.
You're in for a treat. This show is awesome.
"Do you know you have thirty minutes? Thirrrrrrty minnnnutes!"
7:32 No. Not survivors back on the colonies, survivors in the fleet from each particular planet.
This is the single best S1 Ep1 of any show that I've ever watched. After the mini-series, you were definitely hooked with this episode.
OG Battlestar was 1978. It was made after the Star Wars craze. Same idea, they're a rag-tag fleet looking for Earth running from the Cylons.
Woa, it was one of my favorite series back then years ago
Let's freaking GOOOOOOOOOOOO Normies.
President Roslin's expression at the end gets me every time. A baby!
She also played Stands with a Fist on Dances with Wolves.
Leoben (Adama's friend) is 2, Doral is 5 and we know 6. Sometimes known as "Head Six" as in Baltar's head. Sharron is ...
@cardiac19 to soon
@@Dularr How so? I only list known Cylons.
@cardiac19 let the reactors figure it out. See if they can figure out how to deal with Sharon on Caprica and Sharon on Galatica.
Even though we know how the war ends leading to 40 years of peace before they show up again!! I think a new series filmed like this one was set during the original war would be really awesome
Every time Gaius Baltar comes on the screen you know it will be a good scene.
Gaeta/Sinclair is not the only The 100 adult you'll see on this show
Suraj and Rana hive mind confirmed. 12:25.
This shit rules so hard.
I only watched the miniseries after the full series (cos I received this on dvd and it wasn’t included), and lemme tell you: this episode fucking SLAPS as a raw introductory episode.
I think Micky needs to tell the others that Cylons are not Cybermen. Humans don't get captured and converted into Cylons.
I've never been confused about why Six killed that baby. I don't think she "accidentally" snapped its neck. She knew an attack was coming and put it out of its misery because she does seem to want a baby.
Happy New Year normies family🎉🎉
Wow already awesome!!!
Yes, the intro I always skipped
@@NoellaScottMost reactors I’ve watched do that as well. It’s a bit harmless early on, gets you excited for how those images transpire, but as the show goes on those intro flashes get more and more outright spoilery with big moments.
@@JeffreyLong Yep, and it's totally baffling to me. Why?! I know some people read the end of a book first, but most don't
Yeah, the montage/episode preview is kind of an insult to the viewers' intelligence imo.
R. Moore did not want to do it, but they used to do it in the old show. So the producers wanted them to do it again, despite the protestation.
Days without sleep… talk about my bigggest nightmare lol
Battle ⭐️ Galactica is the greatest tv show on 🌍 you guys are going to love this.
Gaius Baltar has accountability dodging skills in the same league as Oz Cobb.
From Dune to Terminator to The Matrix, you'd think that the old robots- taking-over thing would be tired. But nope. It's as fresh as ever when the writing is this good!
Gaius is also the voice of Alucard in the Castlevania anime
Baltar's dream during 33 😂BSG - Friends style (no spoilers):

The humans are polytheistic while the Cylons are monotheistic...
The happy times on the good ship Galatica.
8:24 That's the second time i spotted a woman in the background, wearing that outfit that looks like it belongs in 2001 (minus the giant showercap) Or is it just me?😄
I started the series with this ep, cuz torrents. I just assumed the whole series stared in media res
There are twelve Cylon models.
There are hundreds/thousands of individual units of each model.
The passangers was orginally ment to still be on the ship but the studio said it was too take so made the ship empty
Yes the series was them trying to find Earth
25:53
the whatever channel that was airing BSG at the time didn't let them. because it was apparently too dark for a show that was about total human nuclear genocide.
Perfect time to watch West Wing
So happy to see that you've finally decided to watch Battlestar Galactica! It's the best sci-fi series ever IMO. It's going to take all of you on emotional highs and the lowest of lows! Allot of grey area stuff. On a side note, the actor who plays the CAG, Micheal Hogan has a brain injury. Say a prayer for him!
"They wanted to come as quickly as possible" Are we not doing phrasing anymore?
Avert your eyes from the intro!
Micky, why would you confirm that there's definitely something communicating with Baltar? Bruh...
Eh, it'll be forever before the show confirms any of that, so as long as he doesn't do anymore "hints" they'll probably forget about it.
Turn away for the spoilers/teasers at each opening. There are 12 cylon human different models with infinite copies available.
Almost 25 years later it's a huge reminder how 9/11 impacted the media when this came out... The memorial wall with the pictures...
THE 60s??! i am not THAT old :(
I mighty get this a little wrong as I watched it in a documentary a year or more ago but after the filming of Star Wars Lucas knew it would take awhile before he would be ready to put ILM back to work on production of what would become Empire Strikes Back.
Do not watch the previews at the beginning of each episode. They will reveal scenes in that episode.
The original series of Battlestar Galactica was 1978-1980.
Hey guys WICKED movie is out now, hope you guys will react to it!
"Why does it have to be that close every time!?"
Because they have to stop shooting flak prior to jump so of course that's going to allow the constant barrage of missiles to get close
This has all happened before, it will all happen again.
