Good luck with editing this one. Hopefully it doesn’t bring you too many headaches. BSG seems notoriously difficult to get edited to the satisfaction of the powers that be.
During the filming of the scene where Lee and his Father argue about Zak, his Father has his back to him the entire time. The director couldn't figure out why Olmos did that during each take and kept telling him to turn around, but he never did. Finally the director took Olmos aside and asked him what he was doing. Olmos replied that Adama literally can't face his son because as much as he denies having any responsibility in Zak's death, in his heart he does blame himself as much as Lee does. So he's talking to Lee with his back turned because he just can't look him in the eyes. So the director let Olmos shoot the scene that way.
Six killing the baby and the mother's scream as she calmly walks away - 20-some years later and that moment is still hits hard. Such an incredible series.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon I don't think you get to claim something is out of mercy when you're responsible for creating the alternative conditions. The actual mercy would have been to not start the war.
@@vadalia3860 I'm not supporting it. I'm just saying, based on her morals and beliefs, it was mercy. After all: To ME, it is evil to take the virgin daughters of your enemies and take them as wives so they can live and convert while also killing all the males and non virgins. But the Bible sees it as a sign of a Merciful God when you spare and convert a segment of your enemy and kill the non-virgins and men because their soul needs the mercy. Or to burn everything including animals because you can't take the animals as your own and letting them die of starvation is cruel so killing them is merciful in comparison. (It never was about that they shouldn't of attacked in the first place and both killing and forced marriage were wrong. It has always been that forced marriage was a mercy. That killing the non-believer was a mercy so their soul could have a chance) Or the campaign of "Kill the Indian to save the Man" lead to children being taken away from their parents so they can grow up Christian. They thought they were saving the SOUL. And many that condemned the abuse at the time STILL would continue to desire to remove children forcibly or through trickery from their parents and convert them to save their souls.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon But it's not mercy. That's my point. Deluding yourself that you're committing an act of mercy when you're just doubling down on the evil acts you're carrying out doesn't sudden make it mercy when it's not. Carrying out a war of aggression then taking children as sex slaves is 2 evils, not 1 evil and a mercy. Committing genocide by widespread murder as well as cultural genocide by kidnapping children and forcing converting them is 2 evils, not 1 evil and a mercy.
@@vadalia3860 Correct.. but the mercy thing isnt a guess.. Tricia Helfer said it was in the script motivation as a Mercy killing.. of course the writers wanted a really fraked up hard scene and really would just be better to have the child die instantly along his fathers in a day than do this
Yay for BSG!🎉 When Roslyn is taking her presidential vows, the actor Mary McDonnell does an amazing job with her voice...she sounds so genuinely raw and overwhelmed with historical weight of the moment.
It was the first scene that drew a tear from me. It was such a powerful moment and she executed it so well, Stands With A Fist reared her head that day.
It's a tragedy the main cast didn't get any big awards for their performances in this show aside like Emmys. I feel like the genre wasn't very respected at the time by the mainstream awards circuit and today they would get way more recognition given the rise of sci-fi's popularity and respect since then.
They modeled that scene after LBJ being sworn in after the JFK assassination. The chaos of that moment definitely translates well. Mary McDonnell is such an underrated actor. This is probably my favorite role of hers. Her and Olmos are so great together on this show. The whole cast is great.
There's a reason Mary McDonnell gets second billing on the credits. She did a lot of TV work, but she was also a legit movie star, and quite talented, just like Edward James Olmos.
What I *loved* about this pilot was how well they managed to capture the fog of war in the beginning. It's a very real thing but one which so many other shows/movies shy away from for fear of confusing the audience, and it was refreshing to see how everything played out in this episode.
Definitely, we get enough of a snapshot of what's coming from the intro scene and 6's escapades, but when the attacks start coming it's shocking. Then when we learn about the annihilation of the fleets via Adama's speech to the Galactica it hits hard. In other media you'd have cuts to the fleets in battle and the parliament getting killed. Instead we learn as the main characters do about the losses and for me it makes it much more scary. It elevates the dread of the Cylons because we know it is a massive attack that's devasted humanity and the little we do see of them shows how formidable they are. And the bit where Rosilin learns about her 'promotion' is gut wrenching, just like it would be in real life. This is one of the all time great intros to an apocalyptic scenario. To me its stuff like this, War of the Worlds and the Day Z book which really sell the existential dread of the world collapsing without you needing to see the big battles, in a lot of ways its the aftermath and snippets you get of the big picture that sell the threat more effectively.
23:00... "She's going through alot right now but she has a steely resolve..." I don't think I've ever heard Laura Roslin explained so succintly! Thanks for sharing your reaction with us!
Over time when I visited my mother, we watched this whole show on DVD. I had the box-set that came with a miniature cylon. At some point she asked if we could watch it again - something she had never done for any of the other shows that we watched. I convinced her that we should watch something else that she had not seen before - I had usually already watched what we saw at least once. She died last year July 5'th here, but it would have been around the time people in the USA would have been celebrating July 4'th with fireworks. Many times I have been reminded of my regret that we did not watch this again. I will watch these reactions not just because I love the show, but also because I wish I could watch it together with my mother again.
@@happyslapsgiving5421 Don't think they were trying to include "the" in the name. They saw the "Serenity" out the window, not "the Serenity". It's normal (though not obligatory-regional and industrial variations apply) to use the article for ships without the article being in the actual name.
as a kid, I loved the 1978 series. But with the *possible* exception of the intro music, the reboot blows the old series out of the water in every possible category.
So happy that you are doing this show! Yes, hating characters one day and falling in love with them five episodes later about sums up the entire series. That's why I maybe prefer BSG even over Star Trek, I think. Can hardly wait for Part 2.
@@jenssylvesterwesemann7980 I mean, no time like the present... (And FYI, most of the writing staff on BSG worked on DS9; something of a spiritual successor)
*No spoilers* - I'm so glad to see someone new watching this, and from seeing your first reaction, and the type of questions you're asking, you're in the right head space for this series as well. If I can give you one *non-spoliery* assurance for the series, it's that there will be some concepts or confusing moments thrown at you that make more sense as other episodes proceed. So just soak it in, revel in the cliff hangers and the questions you will have on the assurance that it will probably start making sense in another few episodes. ENJOY!
I cant tell you how happy I am that you are watching this series. It is my favorite sci-fi show of all time. Buckle up cause it's a ride. So say we all!!
The playing cards used in the card game where Starbuck slugs Tigh were the actual cards used in the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica. They were loaned to the 2003 production staff by a fan-collector.
I visited the U.S.S. Midway, and saw how old the technology was, and realized that one of the aspects of the older tech was that it was "ruggedized" - not state-of-the-art, but old, tested, reliable, and capable of functioning while people where trying to poke holes in the ship. That was when I realized that this was the same deal with Galactica.
Sacred Cow Shipyard made a video that was just about the phone system. How it's based on the real world Navy phones that can continue to operate even if all power is lost.
@@johngardner4096 And it was cool that they could justify with the fact that Cylons could hack modern systems. They obviously had advanced tech 40+ years ago, but had to revert to fight the Cylons.
Wait until you see the gim with the old slider scales.. i renember some people complained about those that it was a bit too much "old tech" and someone from the show replied "but they work dont they? ..they dont require power and barelly any maintenance"
No spoilers; I suspect you're gonna really like this one, after your other reactions. I'm almost 60yo and watched the original when I was young, including the series when it was on TV. At first I didn't want to see this new (not so much now) version. Much to my surprise I really liked what they did to the story. Now after watching the whole thing THREE TIMES it's one of my favorites SFs. First time through I realized "Hay this is really good, but I think I missed some things". The next time it's a case of "How come I didn't notice those things the first time". The third time "What! even more stuff, and blimey that's really intellectually and philosophically deep!"
ok....started watching this channel for The Expanse. Stayed for Firefly. And now....BSG?! COUNT ME IN FOR THE LONG HAUL One of the better reaction channels on YT. Good stuff.
Some random details: When this show came out, the salutation of "sir" to be applied to both men and women was a thing. I think a few other shows applied this detail after BSG. Also, there were no energy shielding for the ships, rather there was armor plating that afforded a certain protection to Battlestars from heavy Cylon bombardments. You can see the attachments as the exposed ribbing under the "smoother" skin. It goes to show the age of Galatica, that over time, the replacement armor plates weren't completed / neglected. A fun fact concerning scene setup, to reinforce the schism between the younger Adama and his father, when in the commander's stateroom, the actors did not even face each other despite the very personal conversation regarding their family and Zack. There so many production / directorial details like this that just added layer upon layer of meaning; making this show such a well done production.
It was due to the show runner Ronald Moore previously worked on Star Trek the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine and was simply paying homage to Gene Roddenberry who thought it was naval tradition to call women officers sir instead of ma’am. I can easily say both men didn’t have a clue what they were talking about because I retired from the Navy and you learned very early on to call female officers ma’am or you would be in for a world of hurt.
OMG, I've never clicked on a video so fast! I am so glad you are reacting to this show. More people should. BSG is the reason I got into The Expanse. I love them both equally.
Dank Ferrik!! You are in for one wild ride with this series. Commander Adama sent Col Tigh to put out the fires knowing that people were going to die. Adama and Tigh are the only combat vets on Galactica. They are used to making difficult decisions in combat. This series will slowly explain everything. Just keep watching.
If I'm not mistaken, on US Navy ships the XO is in charge of damage control. Ron Moore had spent some time on an aircraft carrier in the ROTC, and he tried to bring a sense of realism to the show. So aside from Tigh's experience, Adama is saying "do your job."
I'm absolutely thrilled you are starting this series. I watched it during it's original run. No spoilers from me, I promise. In the history of scifi shows, there are ones that change the genre. The one that stands out to me is Star Trek TOS and the next one would be Battlestar Galactica (2004). Hang on, you're gonna love it! I promise.
I started watching it as repeats on BBC. We were in a RV moving around the country for the winter, so I missed episodes. When we got home in the spring...I bought the entire series on DVD's.
Oh boy, you need to go into the classics more, Space 1999 was revolutionary for its time for one. Or my absolute favorite of all time Blake's 7. And then there is shows like Babylon 5 which was insanely good. Also, way way way underrated was Andromeda with Kevin Sorbo (another show by Gene Roddenberry btw).
@@xConundrumx Moore has said that Space 1999 has been one of the inspirations for the preview portion of the intro. When I wanted to get away from Star Trek and Star Wars, I certainly watched plenty of Doctor Who and Blake's 7. I'm not a big fan of B5. Andromeda needs a reboot; there was so much potential there.
I am so glad that TH-cam is rediscovering this series! It's one of my Desert Island shows (aka, the show you would take with you to a desert island and could only watch for the rest of your life) and every time I rewatch it, I notice something new. This time around -- I was so happy to see Starbuck for the first time again through your eyes! "Starbuck" was a male character in the original, and Katie just carried over the SWAGGER and absolutely made the role her own. Glad to be rewatching along with you!
In regards to the space battle scenes, this show, Babylon 5, and The Expanse are among the few shows that try to adhere to Newtonian physics in regard to spacecraft moving through space.
BSG!!! Woohoo!!! Let's go!!! This is going to be epic! The depth of this series amazed me and I, like your father, own it all on Blu-Ray. Every couple years, I've gotta go back and watch it again. Hope you come to love it as much as we do.
First The Expanse, then Firefly and now BSG. A hat rick of my 3 all time fav scifi. A delicious mix of hard scifi and science fantasy with a dash of mysticism. Can't wait for more.
@@walkir2662 Some people aren't as old as us and the dated graphics does count against the good show for people who don't have any nostalgia to balance it out. After all, people have MANY factors besides story/plot that they use as criteria on what they consider a good show or not. Not to mention that there are some who didn't like that JMS flat out tweeted to people of a certain political persuasion: _You didn't understand the show_ And so strike the show from their list, or refuse to put it there, because they didn't like they couldn't twist the political message in the show any more and understand that the show is in fact a middle finger to their political beliefs.
@@donrichards271 I have found that top 3, top 5, and top 10 lists to be surprisingly flexible with how many items they can hold. For example, at any given time, my top five movie list has about thirty movies in it. It's simply a matter of imposing your will on numbers before they impose their will on you
I don't generally watch reaction videos, but your reactions are quite geniune and I love the intensity that you're displaying. As for your question of where Galactica's ammunition was, there was a deleted scene where they dumped all their ammo and detonated it when the ship was clear. Fun facts: Executive Producer Ronald D Moore (of Star Trek: TNG fame) was a Navy veteran, so you can hear sprinkles of Navy announcements here and there in the background. Takes me back to my own Navy days. Also, the wiping away of the "chalk" on the boards is something still used in the Navy today...or at least it was in my day. You're right about the red eye beams being Knight Rider-ish...the original series was created by Glen A. Larson, who also created Knight Rider. Sound effects for KITT were imported from the original BSG...the "whoosh" was from the original Cylon eye beam. KITT's turbo boost was also imported from the original Viper kicking in the turbo's.
Because it was a Reimagined version and everybody was still remembering the original series. But to be fair the original was the tipical plot "alien race at war against the the planet of the show heroes", Not a bit of philosopycal concepts like in the reimagined version.
When this new, rebooted BSG debutted I thought not only was it the best show on tv ( at the time )thought it was even better than all the other Trek series also. This includes: TNG,DS9 and Voyager. The Shield was a very close 2nd.
Thank you, Angela!!! I wondered where you would go after Firefly. You are gonna LOVE this journey, and I firmly applaud your great taste and judgment. You will probably want to get a Battlestar model to join your Rocinante and Serentity behind you.
@@funnylilgalreacts While it's certainly not necessary, I feel like at least a cursory understanding of the original series from 1978 would enhance your appreciation of this show.
There is only one word needed to describe BSG. Sublime: a. lofty, grand, or exalted in thought, expression, or manner b. of outstanding spiritual, intellectual, or moral worth c. tending to inspire awe usually because of elevated quality (as of beauty, nobility, or grandeur) or transcendent excellence
Should state that Battlestar Galactica (1978) in terms of continuity has no connection to the Battlestar Galactica Reboot, unlike something like Doctor Who. But Battlestar Galactica (2004) does have a fun nods and references to the old series. 3:19 For example in this scene we see the Cylon War-era Centurion on the paper that's pulled right from the original series depiction the classic Cylon. In this timeline this would've be the last Cylon design they've seen since the Cylon War. 6:20 Another nod to the classic series is the Viper Mark II displayed on the Galactica used in the Cylon War. The design is pulled right out of the original series these being what the Vipers looked like in the original series. By the time of this series they're using the The Mark Mark VII making the Viper Mark ll around 40 years old. Also alot of the civilian ships look similar too in relation to the original series so a few call backs here as well. But that's really where it ends. The original show never happened in this timeline but the showrunners still pulled elements of the classic show such as the Vipers and classic Centurions as older versions of the models used in the Cylon-Era War 40 years before the event of the show. There's other reasons why the reboot doesn't line up with the original as a sequel but I can't say why for spoiler reasons. Personally I would've loved if this reboot worked as a Sequel to the original show but like I said too many factors that make that impossible. There is a comic called "Battlestar Galactica vs Battlestar Galactica" that imagines the crews of both series coming into contact and interacting with each other. But it's not confirmed if this is a canon story, would hint that both shows are set in alternate timelines, Alternate Universe. So yeah idk lol
I don't think it's spoilery to point out (since they stated it in the opening) in the original series the Cylons were an alien mechanical race conquering the galaxy, but in the reboot they were created by the colonies. Which makes it a major, unreconcilable deviation in the two series.
Also, there's the "Colonial Anthem" playing when the Vipers do the fly-by during the decomissioning ceremony. The motif is the main theme of the original series.
Oh I love this show. Back then it was one of the things that helped me through a hard time in my life. Every episode and season was something to look forward to, a reason to keep fighting for another week and another and another... Today those times are over and everything is good again and even if I like The Expanse a little bit more, BSG has a very special place in my heart.
Indeed one of the pinnacles in all of sci fi...but not the poser you're talking about. The ACTUAL Battlestar Galactica is in THEE top echelons of icons for the Sci Fi industry. Great reaction and so glad to see you starting this series! No spoilers here. Some thing are easy to miss though. The Galatica was being decommissioned and turned into a orbital museum, so it was basically in place. The human starfighters are called Vipers. Lee was piloting a Mk 7 (the newest model which uses computers and such, and thus can be hacked), Commander Adama's restored Viper (and the squadron the Galactica had on board as part of its museum display) are Mk 2, which dates back from the time of the Cylon war, so like the Galactica, lack the computer systems to be hacked. For my money, the Viper Mk2 is the hottest looking starfighter in all of sci-fi. It LOOKS fast and aggressive IMO.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon And Farscape "stole it" from 2000AD, which was doing it in the 70s, although in print rather than on screen. 10th Kingdom also did something similar, but that was a year after Farscape.

26:02 Lee’s ship shorted out because he shot and destroyed a nuke, and even though it didn’t detonate, the pulse was enough to scramble his Viper’s systems. Richard Gibbs created the soundtrack for the BSG mini-series, and did a phenomenal, Hans-Zimmeresque treatment that lent itself well to the confrontation between two races that the viewer is simply trying to assimilate. When SYFY awarded the series contract, Bear McCreary took over for soundtrack, and incredible as it may seem, he did an ever better job for no less than 5 seasons. I rewatch this show, now, in large part due to my admiration for the soundtrack. It's a masterpiece.
Fun fact - Apollo was a test pilot for the military. He was not a fighter pilot so when he came to the Galactica he didnt really have the experience of being a fighter pilot and had to learn on the fly. This fact was revealed by Ron Moore
k I know I already commented but I’M JUST this show broke open my mind and heart to the possibilities of visual sci-fi/genre storytelling in general way back in high school and it’s SO chronically underappreciated and I’m just so, so happy you’re watching ❤️❤️❤️
Great to see your picking up this series! Got a few facts and terms about the ships that might be helpful going forward. -Galactica is officially known as a Jupiter class Battlestar. -The Jupiter class was not only built to be resistant to hacking, hence the almost analog tech, but also tanky. That is why it was able to take at nuke without being too damaged, most other ships would not be able to do that and keep on fighting. -Both of the human fighters we saw in the episode are called Vipers, but they are different generations with the MK7 being newer and sleeker but vulnerable to the Cylon hacking and the MK2 the older fighters they pulled out of the museum. -A good way to tell the difference between the two is to look at the paint, MK2's are white and red, and the MK7's are grey. -You probably already got this on the rewatch but William Adama's rank is not Captain but Commander, as far as the Colonial Fleet goes that is just below the rank of Admiral. Looking forward to more of your reactions!

Oh my god, I'm so happy you're watching this. It might be the best series ever, up there with Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, etc. It kind of set the tone with the whole "our story is over, we're ending after X amount of seasons" thing. So say we all.
It’s called “cinéma vérité” and has been around since the early 1950s. Personally I hate it and think it’s overrated. It’s only real purpose is to hide poor cinematography, acting, and writing.

The original Battlestar Galactica (1978) is worth a watch if you can find it. Only 1 season with 24 episodes but I enjoyed all of them. Seeing the original Starbuck really makes you appreciate Katee Sackhoff's work as the new Starbuck.
Also a lot of the events in this series are call backs to the original. It is nice to have context knowing storyline from the original. When this came out I had not seen the original in 25 years, but I remembered how episodes in the new corresponded with episodes of the old.
The "human" Cylons were a clever way to deal with something that would have been an issue-- FX budget on a lot of robots. Also, it did make sense in terms of the story to change the rules to advance the series.
It also brought the series much closer to the whole -when a suficient inteligent and selfaware machine becames "human" ? debate .. specially with Olmos in it who brought much inspiration from Blade Runner
omg finally another person reacting to this amazing series. This show is so underrated in the youtube space, i just don't understand why. One of my favorite shows of all time. It deserves so much more attention. Probably better executed that popular series like Supernatural, Walking Dead and Game of thrones in my opinion.
The few reactors I have seen do this show often struggle with copyright, it seems the people they own the show are super strict. It probably discourages many reactors on that basis alone.
Interesting fact about nuclear bombs in space. They don't explode with near the force they do on a planet. They depend on the atmosphere to fuel the chain reaction. There is no atmosphere in space so nuclear explosions are limited to the fuel inside the warhead. It's a big boom but more like a conventional bomb on Earth. A conventional bomb in space doesn't do much damage at all. So, nukes not destroying the Galactica actually makes sense in the real world. I also like how they made everything so quiet in space combat because there would actually be no sounds. No air to transmit vibrations. Even a nuclear blast would be nearly silent.
This series is very long, involved, and intense. The character growth you mentioned appreciating in other things, is something you will definitely see here as well. The lore and the story of BSG is one of my all-time favorites. Episode 1 will leave you with a lot of questions and mysteries to unravel, but they do get addressed as the epic unfolds. I hope you like it and it gives you and your dad something new to discuss!
This is a hell of a series to undertake. So cool that you are! I think you will really enjoy it. It is very dramatic, but the characters are great and you will come to really care for them........Well, most of them. 🙂 A lot of human drama.
So interesting that you started this show. Not my favourite but they have some very strong ideas and episodes (including the miniseries). Happy to join you on this journey through space. I really appreciate that you are such a scifi geek.🙂
I will say a few things. 1: Welcome to the BSG family. It's a big one. 2: This series literally *defines* the trajectory of space-based SciFi on the small screen from the moment it aired until now. It has significant influence on big screen as well. 3: Emotional involvement -- of every kind and intensity -- is a hallmark of the storytelling here. In the words of Adama: "Brace for contact."
This should be a ride. I would also suggest 'For All Mankind', if you've got an Apple TV subscription; and Babylon 5 if you've never seen it. It's one of the best series ever written. It was a major influence for The Expanse.
I remember seeing Babylon 5 being described as "the best shower in history". For context, JMS came up with the outline of all 5 seasons during a shower and fleshed it out from there. Add in that JMS pretty much hates the concept of "writing rooms" and wrote the majority of the 110 episodes himself, giving it a strength and consistency of story telling that's hard to match. Sure, the effects are _very_ dated due to how all the CGI was done at the time, but the story was truly epic.
I've been waiting months for this! Battlestar Galactica is my all time favorite show. It's not perfect, but then no show really is. My best advice is to *pay attention*. There's a lot going on in this show and you can easily miss things that are really important. I honestly don't think I didn't catch everything until my third time watching. You'll be please to find that you'll be seeing plenty of Starbuck, I don't think anybody gets more screen time than she does. I'm really looking forward to you doing the rest of the series. Oh, by the way, go ahead and stock up on the Kleenex and keep it handy! I really, really hope you enjoy this show as much as I did (and still do)!
Love Katie as Starbuck. Not sure if you know that in the original 70s series the character was male. There is a great photo of Katie and Dirk Benedict (the actor who played him then) smoking a cigar together. He fully supported her in the role. There is definitely character progression in the the series. Sometimes forward, sometimes slipping back and then forward again. I think the complexity of characters getting up, falling getting up again, or may be even continuing to fall for awhile is is a great part of the show. And it is fitting for what they go through in the show.
Dirk originally had misgivings, for good reason. The 1978 Starbuck was a womanizer and probably a bit misogynistic. But her performance won him over. He could see that her Starbuck was actually much more complex and compelling than his was. Oh, and you forgot to mention that famous photo was taken while they were drinking coffee at Starbucks. I don't think the cigars were lit.
@@davidmills8726 But that didnt ended well.. he was very nice with Katee in that interview in Starbucks only to betray her shortly later when he charged against the new series calling it an attack on masculinity.. Katee was quite annoyedb by this as she felt betrayed by Dirk specially after the first interview with the two.. there is a few interviews about this. As Katee said she tenically was several times more Starbuck than him in terms of time playing the character..
When this aired in Dec. of 2003, it had only been 2 years past 9/11 and so this miniseries hit HARD. It was sci-fi at its finest. The tv series started in 2004 & had one of the best 1st episodes in "33." The first two seasons were amazing & is still one of the best sci-fi shows out there. After a great first half of season 3, the show started to get a little lost. The last season was sort of a head scratcher. It deserved a better end but sometimes the writers just can't clear the high bar they set for themselves in the early episode. I look forward to seeing how and what you respond to in this show. It's probably been just over a decade since I've seen an episode so this will be a nice refresher on the show. Maybe I'll like the back half more with fresh eyes?
A nuke in space isn't the same as on earth there isn't an atmosphere for the shock waves to travel through. When I watched this I was surprised they got it right.
Nothing makes me happier than following you reacting to this series. BSG is one of the break-out long-form storytelling series. It's one of the best bits of smart storytelling ever attempted. Some things to keep in mind, this came out well within the dark times following 9/11 so the paranoia in this show rang very true to many of us.
Yeah it was obvious at the time. This current TikTok Generation has NO IDEA what it was like. Ask anyone who was over the age of five and they will remember what they were doing at the time. It was like JFK and Pearl Harbor. Reagan getting shot was also one of those times, but not nearly as intense. Also, the Cylons being humanoid and looking like us was like the terrorists being embedded into our society and the paranoia of the time.
The ACTUAL Battlestar Galactica is in THEE top echelons of icons in the Sci Fi industry. The theme song is nothing short of classic brilliance performed by The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the special effects were MOVIE LEVEL quality on a TV show airing. The number of recorded viewers who watched the original 1978 episode on national television in September was...70 MILLION people. It is THEE highest rated Network Sci Fi debut ever in history. That new 2004 attempted rendering of it...simply does not match the numerical statistics of it's irrefutable success. Ever since the Real show was over, it has had an endless franchise of Comic Books, Ship Models, Action figures, Posters, DVD box sets, PS2 video games, several Blu Ray editions, etc etc for over two decades and that major long time success of the franchise is what that new 2004 rendering has totally banked itself on, riding on it's coattails like a parasite standing on the shoulder of a Giant, without the slightest reverence to the legacy that it climbed on. The actual BSG had guest featured actors by the caliber of Emmy nominated, Broadway stars, Golden Globe + Oscar winners such as Lloyd Bridges and the great Fred Astaire. The 2004 crew should bow their head with respect and say thank you to the Giant who gave them a job.
I saw the old, cheesy Galactica when it came out so I wasn't really expecting much for this one. I saw the beginning and was just amazed how good it was. I was skeptical about a female Starbuck and Katee Sackofff did her part better than it had any right to be done, just an incredible performance. This really is SciFi at it's best. The best thing about this show is that it expects the audience to be smart. It doesn't dumb anything down or explain minor points, it does expect you to think a little.
I think the neat part is that "Starbuck" is a callsign, not a character name, so it really could have been given to anyone. That they're an ace pilot is basically the only similarity, and in that sense it's done justice.
es, I had memories of the 70s version and because of that resisted this version for a long time. Finally a friend sent me a bootleg dvd of the mini series and 15 minutes in I saw they got it right and was hooked. I soon went on to get the official DVDs and later the BluRays.
It's amazing to see someone starting this journey! Hope you stick with it! Battlestar Galactica is legitimately one of the best Scifi shows that's ever been produced, it's a damn shame it was eventually cancelled but it does a very good job of coming full circle and providing a solid ending to the show. On top of that the soundtrack is a 10/10, composed by Bear McCreary, who later went on to score Terminator:SCC, God of War, The Walking Dead, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Agents of Shield, Blacksails, Outlander etc. As each season progresses the music, themes and story itself just gets deeper and more connected, eventually it all threads together but you've got the pleasure of watching it from the start with a fresh mind! Something we all wish we could do again 🤣 As for the Cylon motivations, just strap yourself in lol, it gets around to it all as the show progresses! As far as taking command of the fleet, with the loss of the fleet headquarters on Picon and now the death of Admiral Nagala with the destruction of a huge number of their Battlestars, it's clear (to Adama) that there is no longer a functioning chain of command and also that they are losing the war very rapidly, in the opening salvo most of their worlds have been nuked, their fleet is suffering loss after loss on the backs of random malfunctions, his own active squadron (the grey Viper Mk7's that flew alongside the Raptor flown by Boomer) was wiped out without being able to fire a single shot. At this stage he's taking command of the fleet to try and disengage and regroup at Ragnar anchorage, if they continue to engage the Cylons without a plan and without any advantage then they'll keep losing, and at that rate the war will be over in a matter of days if not hours. Roslin is directing him as acting president to assist in humanitarian aid, which is foolish at best, technically she's President but given the scale of the war going on, rescuing a handful of civilians (with the context Adama can see) is a distraction at best, they've both got very different viewpoints and it's definitely a point that gets explored later on throughout the miniseries and then even further in the show! Also loving the eaglemoss Roci in the background, just picked up one myself and the detailing work is surprisingly good haha
The guy with the books running to the transport kind of stuck with me in retrospect. In this situation, humanity is being actively exterminated. It isn’t just people who are being erased - it’s culture; millennia of culture. He was trying to preserve even a small part of that. If the whole of humanity was erased and all that remained was a small town’s worth of people and whatever they managed to bring with them, would we remember who we are? Don’t even need to speculate - the conquistadors burned the libraries they found in Mesoamerica; in the last two years in South America there have been two instances I heard of (one in Chile, the other I believe in Brazil) where there is only one person left who speaks their peoples’ language. This show dates back to shortly after 9/11, but the guy who tried to jump on the wing, sadly enough, reminds me of those who tried to hang on to the exteriors of planes taking off from Afghanistan. Desperation trumps reason. The Galactica’s greatest advantage right now (and that of her fighter complement) is what the tour guide outlined in the beginning - its systems are too primitive for electronic warfare to compromise them. Kind of the same deal with America’s missile silos, where the computers still use 7.5” floppy disks - it’s quite literally too primitive to be hacked. The Cylon infiltrator, Six, wrote a backdoor into a piece of software which was distributed throughout the fleet and allowed them to be shut down and destroyed without a fight. Galactica never installed it. And as far as the baby goes, the only possible reason I can think of for Six to do that which doesn’t boil down to her being a completely amoral sociopath is that she knew what was coming, and maybe decided that was better than risking the chance of it surviving and being buried in rubble, to linger alone and helpless.
What the man trying to jump on the wing reminded me of were the stories of German soldiers trying to do the same on the last planes out of Stalingrad during WWII.
Glad to see you dive into this epic series too, because it's in many ways predecessor of The Expanse. Also, these are probably the best two SyFy originals. Lee has military rank of captain. Will is "commander" of the ship. This is same as captain or skipper of the ship, but is higher as military rank. For example Saul Tigh, as XO, has military rank of colonel. So, commander Adama has at least same rank, or higher. Which one, it's never mentioned that I know. Btw, you will see: XO can have lower rank too (I think there will be one or two lieutenants too). But that's enough about that to stay out of spoiler territory. Btw, showrunner of this show was Ronald D. Moore. He started on Star Trek: TNG and was big name later on DS9. Currently he's running For All Mankind on Apple+. Big Recommendation! Interesting, Naren Shankar, showrunner of The Expanse, was on Star Trek too. Caprica is prequel of BSG - in time of youth of Will Adama (not main character). But it lasted just one season. Not a big fan, but it has its fanbase, for sure.
I got the soundtrack for both the miniseries and season one. The miniseries CD came with two covers. I was perplexed until I realized one was signed by the composer (not Bear McCreary; he didn’t do the mini). That was a fun bonus.
@@jamielandis4308 Bear McCreary most certainly DID do the mini. He was second under Richard Gibbs and became primary when the series was picked up. It's why you can hear his sound in the mini that carries through the series. He didn't spend all those seasons pretending he was Gibbs.

So smart. The actor typically knows best in those moments
Olmos using that old Miami Vice magic and style.
Olmos is such an amazing talent. He gives Adama some grit
Genius!
Olmos was right. And it’s exactly the take away I had. The drama in this series is top notch
Six killing the baby and the mother's scream as she calmly walks away - 20-some years later and that moment is still hits hard. Such an incredible series.
And she did it out of MERCY, not anger or desire to be cruel.
@@ChibiHoshiDragon I don't think you get to claim something is out of mercy when you're responsible for creating the alternative conditions. The actual mercy would have been to not start the war.
@@vadalia3860
I'm not supporting it. I'm just saying, based on her morals and beliefs, it was mercy.
After all:
To ME, it is evil to take the virgin daughters of your enemies and take them as wives so they can live and convert while also killing all the males and non virgins.
That killing the non-believer was a mercy so their soul could have a chance)
Or the campaign of "Kill the Indian to save the Man" lead to children being taken away from their parents so they can grow up Christian.
Tricia Helfer said it was in the script motivation as a Mercy killing.. of course the writers wanted a really fraked up hard scene and really would just be better to have the child die instantly along his fathers in a day than do this
The effects house that did Firefly also did work on BSG. In the early scene on Caprica, you can see Serenity fly over the city.
Yep, it's in the scene where Roslyn is in the doctor's office with the big window.

Yay for BSG!🎉
When Roslyn is taking her presidential vows, the actor Mary McDonnell does an amazing job with her voice...she sounds so genuinely raw and overwhelmed with historical weight of the moment.
It was the first scene that drew a tear from me. It was such a powerful moment and she executed it so well, Stands With A Fist reared her head that day.
@@shotgunbettygamingStands With Fist😄😄...I love her in that too!

My jaw literally dropped when I saw this in my recommendations. I feel like this show is weirdly forgotten, despite being amazing. So psyched.

Yeah, a few reactors have started but stopped because of the constant struggle with copyright.

It is "forgotten" because it sucks.

This series is, and will always be, the gold standard of reboots.
I cannot say enough about how stellar this series is.
as a kid, I loved the 1978 series. But with the *possible* exception of the intro music, the reboot blows the old series out of the water in every possible category.

The playing cards used in the card game where Starbuck slugs Tigh were the actual cards used in the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica. They were loaned to the 2003 production staff by a fan-collector.
Using a technologically obsolete Galactica was a stroke of genius. It gave the bridge scenes a World War II feel.

Yay!
Agreed- without this BSG, we never would have gotten The Expanse.

Fun fact: The Battlestar Galactica miniseries was the first time on TV where viewership went **up** after the first episode instead of down.
I remember. Everyone I knew expected this to be terrible. We were so, so wrong.
Because it was a Reimagined version and everybody was still remembering the original series. But to be fair the original was the tipical plot "alien race at war against the the planet of the show heroes", Not a bit of philosopycal concepts like in the reimagined version.
X-Files viewership went up. So, not a fact.
Do you hear what you are saying?? In ALL of history for TV??? You're some kind of joke...
That's... not REMOTELY true. In fact, that's an insane thing to claim.
This is probably a top 5 all time show for me, so hyped to see more people reacting to it.
I'm sure it gonna happen 🤣
So say we all.
@@raymondamador1487 So say we all.
@@funnylilgalreacts While it's certainly not necessary, I feel like at least a cursory understanding of the original series from 1978 would enhance your appreciation of this show.
My all time favorite show! Hope you enjoy the journey, it's truly a gem of a sci-fi series.
Glad to see you bring this. It's quite a trip. Begins strong and grows into an epic. Looking forward to the ride. Thanks! :)
There is only one word needed to describe BSG.
Sublime:
a. lofty, grand, or exalted in thought, expression, or manner
b. of outstanding spiritual, intellectual, or moral worth
c. tending to inspire awe usually because of elevated quality (as of beauty, nobility, or grandeur) or transcendent excellence
Well, they also had the actor that played the original Apollo in a major role as well :)
Technically Doctor Who isn't a reboot, it's a continuation after a long hiatus.
@@JakkFrost1 Yeah Dr Who is more of a soft reboot.
One of the pinnacle series in all of sci fi.

The ACTUAL Battlestar Galactica is in THEE top echelons of icons for the Sci Fi industry. As of 2023 it is still THEE highest rated Network Sci Fi debut ever in history. That new 2004 attempted rendering of it...simply does not match the numerical statistics of it's irrefutable success. Ever since the Real show was over, it has had an endless franchise of Comic Books, Ship Models, Action figures, Posters, DVD box sets, PS2 video games, several Blu Ray editions, etc etc for over two decades and that franchise's major long time success IS what that 2004 rendering has totally banked itself on; riding on it's coattails like a parasite standing on the shoulder of a Giant, without the slightest reverence to the legacy that it climbed on. The actual BSG had guest featured actors by the caliber of those who were Emmy nominated, those who were Broadway stars, those who were Golden Globe winners and Oscar winners such as Lloyd Bridges and the great Fred Astaire. So that 2004 crew should bow their humble head with respect and say thank you to the Giants name that is employing them.
EJO nails the role of Adama. You'll be on the edge of your seat during most of the last episode. Enjoy the ride. Fantastic series.
Best thing about this show? The use of the word 'Frak!' to be able to curse and bypass the censors. 😀

Favorite series ever!
Be ready to have your heart melt, and then crushed (in a good way) a hundred times, all 4 seasons.
The whole intro for the miniseries is a masterclass of film making. Everything from the moon to Starbucks little run to the tour.
It tells you everything you need to know about the setting while still being entertaining.
And it was all done in one take, which is super impressive
I think this one will hurt in a good way. It is a truely great show with great characters❤
As a person who is also a fan of Firefly and The Expanse, I do love this massively popular, award-winning show that became watercooler talk even amongst those who didn't have any interest in the sci-fi genre. Seeing that you're doing it brought up feelings of joy and delight. I can't wait to see your reactions as the stories unfold.
Give yourself time, for all of the many pieces, and plethora of questions (both now, and to come), will be answered throughout the journey.
Welcome to one of the finest series that has ever been produced: Battlestar Galactica.

This is a fantastic show, amazing story, great characters and at many points makes for some serious social commentary about who we are as human beings. The writing is so good
26:02 Lee’s ship shorted out because he shot and destroyed a nuke, and even though it didn’t detonate, the pulse was enough to scramble his Viper’s systems.

Also, be careful googling ‘cylons” because you will be inadvertently spoiling yourself.
At MOST you can Google image ‘1970s cylons” without spoiling yourself.
"Hate a character, then love them, then hate them"...that Nate Shelley PTSD doesn't go away.
The soundtrack for this show was just so spot on. The drum beats, and the muted tones for space scenes.
The best thing to do with this show is carefully listened to everything they say and do in every episode.
I absolutely adore this series. So say we all!!

Fun fact - Apollo was a test pilot for the military. He was not a fighter pilot so when he came to the Galactica he didnt really have the experience of being a fighter pilot and had to learn on the fly. This fact was revealed by Ron Moore
A slow clap to the editor. LOVE the call out to the paper used on the show, in the pop up used to display the show.
Wooooooooooooo! Really happy you are doing BSG, it’s up there with The Expanse as my favourite sci fi.

this show broke open my mind and heart to the possibilities of visual sci-fi/genre storytelling in general way back in high school and it’s SO chronically underappreciated and I’m just so, so happy you’re watching ❤️❤️❤️
Best sci-fi show ever on TV... And it came out when we were fighting in Iraq, so there are questions raised by the show.
I've seen the main show more times than any other TV show, it's not even close. I'm beyond hyped for this!
Omg! So glad to see you watching this! Probably my favourite sci-fi series ever! Enjoy the ride.

Firefly did it first.
It was borroved from Police series….
It’s called “cinéma vérité” and has been around since the early 1950s.

I was a big fan of the original 1978 series and was very pleased with how this was done even with all the changes . It is very realistic in military terms
I'm so happy you decided to watch this, love your reaction videos and I do want to rewatch this show but feeling not too committed to watch all of it as I have too many shows I'm re-watching atm so these work great as a recap (I remember most of it as I'm watching this anyways). Thank you!
The original Battlestar Galactica (1978) is worth a watch if you can find it. Only 1 season with 24 episodes but I enjoyed all of them. Seeing the original Starbuck really makes you appreciate Katee Sackhoff's work as the new Starbuck.
Just avoid the Galactica 1980 spin-off! Although, me as a kid enjoyed the heck out of it. :)
there is nothing wrong with the original Starbuck
Also a lot of the events in this series are call backs to the original. It is nice to have context knowing storyline from the original. When this came out I had not seen the original in 25 years, but I remembered how episodes in the new corresponded with episodes of the old.
There is Galactica 1980, which was the second season of the 1978/9 Battlestar Galactica...
@@spidersj12 NO! No such abomination to mankind exists...I refuse to believe it!
So happy to see you watching this. It's my personal favorite sci-fi series.
Glad to see you reacting to this show! So say we all!
Thanks for doing this series. I was thinking about rewatching it myself. It's very good. We can watch it together.
This is a hell of a series to undertake. So cool that you are! I think you will really enjoy it. It is very dramatic, but the characters are great and you will come to really care for them........Well, most of them. 🙂 A lot of human drama.

Yay! I love this show! 💕
I love that you’re asking all the right questions. You’re in for a ride!

One of my top three favorite shows of all time. _So_ good.
This should be a ride. I would also suggest 'For All Mankind', if you've got an Apple TV subscription; and Babylon 5 if you've never seen it. It's one of the best series ever written. It was a major influence for The Expanse.
I LOVED For All Mankind! I didn't watch the second season, but maybe I'll revisit it at somepoint
@@funnylilgalreacts I second Babylon 5, it's teh best written show I've ever seen, and the acting is superb.
@@EhrineAshbark Thats what I love about it. It was the first of the Sci fi serials. In my humble opinion, still one of the very best.
The tv series started in 2004 & had one of the best 1st episodes in "33."
The first two seasons were amazing & is still one of the best sci-fi shows out there.
The impact this show had on the audience coming so soon after 9/11 was immense. It really hit home given the social mood at the time.
This remains one of my favorite sets I ever had the pleasure to work on.
Second only to Eureka.
(They had an amazing sandwich station on Eureka)
I bet these sets were BONKERS
Girl, I love that you are watching this show. One of my favorites. I am here for it.
Something we all wish we could do again 🤣
As for the Cylon motivations, just strap yourself in lol, it gets around to it all as the show progresses!
Big fan of the soundtrack. Big fan of Edward James Olmos. A lot of the space stuff has to be hand-waved, but it's still fun.
