This feels like the old days when movie companies would ask game devs to make a game based on their movie where it's basically retelling the event of the movie but with lots of minigames. Ratatouille, Madagascar, Ice Age are some of them. Edit: I'm not saying that the three games that I mentioned and some others are bad/have the same quality to this game because I do genuinely love the three of them (at least used to), it's just that this game reminds me of them.

The Korra game was fun for what they were able to do with the meager budget and development time given it was Platinum Games. Could’ve been a spectacular character action game, was average to rising above adequate with the mehh story contrivance to reattain your powers for a sense of progression being passable What I find silly with this is they copy pasted the polar bear dog on rail running levels to collect coins in this game 😆 so inspired

i think the difference is the price. Most of my brand tie-in shovelware was less than $20 so expectations were way lower (also the webpage glitched the first time i tried to comment, sorry if this is a dupe)
At least the games 20 years ago were actually enjoyable. Like sure, the expectation/standard was lower, but the effort into making the game was noticeable, just all the little love letters and thought put into games were appreciated. The fact that this game was made, given the resources and popularity of the franchise, is insulting. I've found and played more games in VR chat that had more effort put into them.

If I'm not mistaken, this originally started as an indie game. It's just that Avatar Studios picked it up to make it official. They didn't actually do much to improve the said game though, just, accepting the indie game as being official. It's nice considering that it's an indie game, but 50 dollars is a bit much in my opinion.
because MMOs barely and rarely even make money. MMOs take YEARS.. as in like 7-10 to even produce on a reasonable scale. you are dumping massive resources into something that MIGHT sell. not only that but MMO future returns are also poor post launch unless you lost ark it. theres a reason MMOs suck and why most devs avoid them like the plague. maybe a solid dark siders like RPG would work but avatar isnt that great of an IP. far far to childish to bring in a demographic above 20 that doesnt already have nostalgia for it. if you think the avatar IP could support a general MMO audience you are high. even stronger IPs get stuck only to their niche audiences.
They should make an avatar game kinda like hogwarts legacy where you make your own avatar character and get to pick what nation you start with and master the rest of the elements, and its an openworld. Honestly if they had a bigger budget and put in more effort, they could make it as successful as hogwarts legacy.

Yeah the roblox equivalent is arcane odyssey (in reality they’re not alike except for the fact that you can customize your character to practice one of the 4 elements + more as magic & not bending. Despite that being the only linking factor, I still make the connection on the 2 of those)
they had a alright one back on PS2, mp arenas were fun Avatar: Legend of Aang is the game, can vs a friend as one of the main characters in the combat arena, Toh/Zuko for example
The Korra game was alright. I know there's a lot of martial arts and bending is a cool concept but I'm starting to think this series doesn't lend itself well to a game format.
The thing that irks me the most is that Aang almost never results to violence and prefers to use his enemies’ energy against them. It was a major plot point in the show.
Literally there are a bunch of avatars. Make an open world RPG where you recruit companions to find that eras avatar. And make your own character from any nation. Like plz give us a good avatar game my god
Like you said, Atla is such a juggernaut. I have the artbook at home where they talk a ton about the worldbuilding and background information. This show won multiple awards, one even on the accurate depiction of animal cruelty. I just wished companies would stop kicking it with their feet once they acquire the license to do anything atla-related. Imagine a game where you played a custom character in an original adventure but in the atla-verse. I'd love that shit.
I think some of the biggest issues that hold these games back is that they keep trying to tell the story of the show. I don't care how good the game could be, a video game will not tell the original story better than the show. The flow/editing of the series played a huge part in it's success. The other thing is that they are making these games for kids when they know damn well that there are PLENTY of adults who love the IP, especially since the original fans are adults now... I hope we get something like what you described. Even if we can't make our own characters (which is something I'd love to do) I want it to be a NEW story, or at least a story that takes place within the background of team avatars adventure. I don't think we're ever gonna see it happen though.
The worst part is that this is a consequence of Nickelodeon still owning the rights to the show, if it were the choice of the studio (financially and/or contractually) then they definitely would have waited to release the game (especially considering how bad this game makes them look)

Despite it's broad appeal, people tend to forget that Avatar was a show designed for younger audiences. The game was probably made for like 8 year olds, so it needs to be super simple. We're never going to see a high budget production of any Avatar game/movie, because the series is never going to be taken more seriously than that by people who fund such projects.

For me it’s Bionicle. Like the concepts are right there, but every single game they’ve tried making is average at best. Actually only like 2 are anywhere near passable.
They should make a big studio avatar game that’s more RPG inspired, where you start as an avatar from another time and you get to pick what nation you start from and then you have a skill tree to unlock the other elements and abilities through out the game as you explore the other nations and sub cultures. You could focus on certain builds like blood/lava/metal bending. Like imagine an avatar game inspired by fromsoft 0_0

They should get the guys who made Hi-Fi Rush to make an Avatar game. The artstyle, animation and mechanics from that would translate very well. I'd argue the writers for the story would also come up with better dialogue and jokes too. Just off the top of my head.
This makes me really sad. I remember seeing a clip where Dante Basco (the voice actor of Zhuko) was talking about an upcoming Last Airbender game that looked promising. I don't know if he meant this one but the original franchise is incredible and there's still huge potential, it's very sad when things like the movie and this game just can't live up to it.

I mean we can give crap to the studio for this but I personally blame Nickelodeon for this. They are the dipsticks that approved this and decided to cash in on the avatar hype from the Netflix series instead of doing it justice.
People often exaggerates when comparing something more primitive to PS2 but this is actually basically like a PS2 if you just remove the reflections and scale down the resolution, some particle effects and texture rendering. All that's needed is those specific type of nostalgic sound effects that exists in almost every PS2 games and most console games in the 2000s at the time. Especially how the game handle various of things like the animations, everything about the dialogue (telepathic communication) and the cutscenes that was common in PS2 games. Those are unintentionally nostalgic in an ironic way.
I picked this up for my wife because she loves Avatar so much. I guess it's a good things she's like textbook entry level gamer so I'm sure somehow she will enjoy it. This is so disheartening to see.

I feel like if there was the budget and someone passionate enough, a studio could make an amazing last air bender game. The series had great world building and themes. I would play it if the game was good.
The Kyoshi and Yangchen novels are great and the upcoming live-action show looks like it could be amazing, plus the mobile game is doing pretty good. There's a lot of momentum going on with the Avatar franchise and it's a shame that they decided to do such a low effort videogame.
We dont know anything about the live action show other than Bryke left the project over creative differences and apparently there were a lot of layoffs or something for that show recently because of the success of live action One Piece so Idk about it lol. I'm more interested in the upcoming animated movie and the next animated show they come out with. The books are absolutely stellar, though. When I look at the cast and the production crew of the show, I see a lot of people who truly want to make the best adaptation possible. About the layoffs tho, I didn't know at all. And yes, the upcoming animated movie is something I'm really excited for, but we know nothing about it for now other than it is in production and it will be set some years after the events of the Aang series. My guess is that it could be about the foundation of Republic City.

They tried to cash in on adults nostalgic for the series, when all nickelodeon had to was just put Legend of Korra back on digital stores. It's a shame because the series lends itself well to open world action adventure type of game. Travel through the four kingdoms using flying beasts as fast travel, talk to NPCs who give different types of side quests, find dungeons filled with bandits and treasure, etc.
All they have to do is make an open world Avatar rpg game and actually try to make it good but they really just made a puzzle game aimed entirely for kids

I've been going through the Avatar games for a video recently (this one included), and boy let me tell you...it might actually be the worst of all of 'em. Phew.
Gotta hand it to them, they somehow managed to make a game that combines all three seasons of the show into one, and yet looks and plays worse than the PS2-era games that only cover one season at a time (except for the very first game that had its own weird original story)
I don't understand why is there not yet a VR title for Avatar - bending in VR is such a neat concept, yet there is almost none of it. Imagine Rumble (a VR game) but with all four elements not just earthbending... It'd be awesome.
"Why don't they put more effort into this" is the entire history of Airbender as a franchise. The original show was great, and Korra was pretty good considering how difficult it was for the creators to get it made season-by-season, but Nick actively despised everything about it and actively sabotaged it when possible. Even now, over a decade later, when they seem to be trying to cash in on nostalgia for the property, they can only kind of be bothered to care. Actually though, I could expand that to "shonen" in general (yes I know Avatar is American). Even the games the fans like are horribly mediocre by the larger standards of video games as a medium. I would seriously argue that Dragon Ball FighterZ is the only shonen game ever made that was genuinely high quality by video game standards. Maybe Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future was decent as well, at least for the standards of its genre in its day, though it wasn't anything crazy.
The ninjastorm games were pretty good. I know people who only experience with Naruto are those games. Dragon Ball has a couple of actually good games aside of Tenkaichi. Legacy of Goku 2 and 3 (not the first one) are pretty solid GBA games. Advance Adventure is genuinely one of my favourite anime games (my only criticism is that its way too short and should’ve included the Piccolo Jr. arc). Other than that, most anime games are shitty arena fighters trying (and failing) to ape the ninjastorm formula.

If I'm not mistaken, this originally started as an indie game. It's just that Avatar Studios picked it up to make it official. They didn't actually do much to improve the said game though, just, accepting the indie game as being official. It's nice considering that it's an indie game, but 50 dollars is a bit much in my opinion.

I get flabbergasted on how Nickelodeon hasn't figured out that making an Avatar themed open world rpg or MMO would sell like hot cakes
because MMOs barely and rarely even make money. MMOs take YEARS.. as in like 7-10 to even produce on a reasonable scale. you are dumping massive resources into something that MIGHT sell. not only that but MMO future returns are also poor post launch unless you lost ark it. theres a reason MMOs suck and why most devs avoid them like the plague. maybe a solid dark siders like RPG would work but avatar isnt that great of an IP. far far to childish to bring in a demographic above 20 that doesnt already have nostalgia for it. if you think the avatar IP could support a general MMO audience you are high. even stronger IPs get stuck only to their niche audiences.

They should make an avatar game kinda like hogwarts legacy where you make your own avatar character and get to pick what nation you start with and master the rest of the elements, and its an openworld. Honestly if they had a bigger budget and put in more effort, they could make it as successful as hogwarts legacy.

Yeah the roblox equivalent is arcane odyssey (in reality they’re not alike except for the fact that you can customize your character to practice one of the 4 elements + more as magic & not bending. Despite that being the only linking factor, I still make the connection on the 2 of those)

Like you said, Atla is such a juggernaut. I have the artbook at home where they talk a ton about the worldbuilding and background information. This show won multiple awards, one even on the accurate depiction of animal cruelty.
I just wished companies would stop kicking it with their feet once they acquire the license to do anything atla-related.

I think some of the biggest issues that hold these games back is that they keep trying to tell the story of the show. I don't care how good the game could be, a video game will not tell the original story better than the show. The flow/editing of the series played a huge part in it's success. The other thing is that they are making these games for kids when they know damn well that there are PLENTY of adults who love the IP, especially since the original fans are adults now...
I hope we get something like what you described. Even if we can't make our own characters (which is something I'd love to do) I want it to be a NEW story, or at least a story that takes place within the background of team avatars adventure. I don't think we're ever gonna see it happen though.

Despite it's broad appeal, people tend to forget that Avatar was a show designed for younger audiences. The game was probably made for like 8 year olds, so it needs to be super simple. We're never going to see a high budget production of any Avatar game/movie, because the series is never going to be taken more seriously than that by people who fund such projects.

There is *so* much potential to be had when making a game in the avatar universe, it’s a shame that nobody has done the franchise justice.
They should make a big studio avatar game that’s more RPG inspired, where you start as an avatar from another time and you get to pick what nation you start from and then you have a skill tree to unlock the other elements and abilities through out the game as you explore the other nations and sub cultures. You could focus on certain builds like blood/lava/metal bending. Like imagine an avatar game inspired by fromsoft 0_0
They kinda did that for some DS games. But never executed above like a 6/10

I don't know if he meant this one but the original franchise is incredible and there's still huge potential, it's very sad when things like the movie and this game just can't live up to it.

People often exaggerates when comparing something more primitive to PS2 but this is actually basically like a PS2 if you just remove the reflections and scale down the resolution, some particle effects and texture rendering. All that's needed is those specific type of nostalgic sound effects that exists in almost every PS2 games and most console games in the 2000s at the time. Especially how the game handle various of things like the animations, everything about the dialogue (telepathic communication) and the cutscenes that was common in PS2 games. Those are unintentionally nostalgic in an ironic way.
I picked this up for my wife because she loves Avatar so much. I guess it's a good things she's like textbook entry level gamer so I'm sure somehow she will enjoy it. This is so disheartening to see.
This franchise deserves so much better. If they let a AAA studio work on it I'm sure they would have made their money back and more

@@StarRider587 I don't think Bryke's absense is the worst thing ever tbh. Sure, they're the creators, but they weren't the only ones in charge of making Avatar as great as it is. When I look at the cast and the production crew of the show, I see a lot of people who truly want to make the best adaptation possible. About the layoffs tho, I didn't know at all.
And yes, the upcoming animated movie is something I'm really excited for, but we know nothing about it for now other than it is in production and it will be set some years after the events of the Aang series. My guess is that it could be about the foundation of Republic City.

They tried to cash in on adults nostalgic for the series, when all nickelodeon had to was just put Legend of Korra back on digital stores. It's a shame because the series lends itself well to open world action adventure type of game. Travel through the four kingdoms using flying beasts as fast travel, talk to NPCs who give different types of side quests, find dungeons filled with bandits and treasure, etc.

All they have to do is make an open world Avatar rpg game and actually try to make it good but they really just made a puzzle game aimed entirely for kids

Its on that game making game called Dreams, which Sony never gave any advertising to and ended support for after just a few years. Servers are still up, but its never going to get any updates. Fuck Sony, man lol. Its hella stupid cause idk what the fuck Sony was expecting if they're the ones who never advertised it outside of like, three tweets.

The Legend of Korra game on Xbox Live Arcade was decent iirc but its not purchasable anymore.

Crazy how it genuinely looks like the guy making an Avatar game in Dreams put more thought into it than an official release did.
I think the reality is that a lot of fans have the same skills and tools as studios - if not better ones - and are actually passionate about their work and can do it for a fraction of the time and cost.
Am I tripping, or do I remember this being a fan made Flash game I played in 2013? There was definitely an Avatar Flash game that was very similar to this one.

I sold this game to a guy at GameStop the other day, not knowing this is what the actual game is. He brought it back the next day for partial money back (thanks to GameStop’s policy with opened new games). Wish I could’ve seen this video sooner to help him avoid making a bad purchase. Now I kinda feel bad. LOL

I've been going through the Avatar games for a video recently (this one included), and boy let me tell you...it might actually be the worst of all of 'em. Phew.

Gotta hand it to them, they somehow managed to make a game that combines all three seasons of the show into one, and yet looks and plays worse than the PS2-era games that only cover one season at a time (except for the very first game that had its own weird original story)
I don't understand why is there not yet a VR title for Avatar - bending in VR is such a neat concept, yet there is almost none of it. Imagine Rumble (a VR game) but with all four elements not just earthbending... It'd be awesome.

This game looks straight out of the 2005 flash games that I got already downloaded in my first pre-built PC.
"Why don't they put more effort into this" is the entire history of Airbender as a franchise. The original show was great, and Korra was pretty good considering how difficult it was for the creators to get it made season-by-season, but Nick actively despised everything about it and actively sabotaged it when possible. Even now, over a decade later, when they seem to be trying to cash in on nostalgia for the property, they can only kind of be bothered to care.
Actually though, I could expand that to "shonen" in general (yes I know Avatar is American). Even the games the fans like are horribly mediocre by the larger standards of video games as a medium. I would seriously argue that Dragon Ball FighterZ is the only shonen game ever made that was genuinely high quality by video game standards. Maybe Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future was decent as well, at least for the standards of its genre in its day, though it wasn't anything crazy.
Fighterz is good, but Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is the superior DB game.
The ninjastorm games were pretty good. I know people who only experience with Naruto are those games.
Dragon Ball has a couple of actually good games aside of Tenkaichi. Legacy of Goku 2 and 3 (not the first one) are pretty solid GBA games. Advance Adventure is genuinely one of my favourite anime games (my only criticism is that its way too short and should’ve included the Piccolo Jr. arc).
Other than that, most anime games are shitty arena fighters trying (and failing) to ape the ninjastorm formula.

Zuko’s entire moveset is just two attacks, that is shameful
