    I used this 15 yrs ago on a Chevy Corvette, I didn't remember the exact steps and this video is perfect for helping me. I'm going to use it on a Universal Diesel 44 HP on a sailboat. Thank you!

    Klowny1969, Great video! Real easy to follow. The best part is that I won't have to crawl under my truck to see if there is a loose connection to the solenoid. I know there is one cable from the FORD solenoid that still has to be run to the starter, but I don't think I have ever seen these nuts and lock washers come loose. I have seen smaller wire to "S" or "I" terminal crack and or loosen because everyone is afraid to tighten them too much.
    I already rewired my Blazer with this setup. I added a Anderson Powepole connector (use one side only) on the cable that goes to the starter from the FORD solenoid. I put it nearer to the new solenoid. I hook it up nice and tight to the starter while the starter is out of the car, so I can really get it snug. The added benefit is that I don't have to work so hard to get the damned wire connected to the starter in a cramped and confined space. I just have to mount the support brace and the two mounting screws.
    This setup has solved a lot of issues, where I used to curse having to troubleshoot GM starter no-start situations in the past. Easy and highly recommended. Big thank you.

      That's the reason I hooked up one.. No crank no Start issues. Works fine but I have to use a switch.. Is it optional? To use a switch or key?

    Thanks for the video! My solenoid on my sbc went out today. Got a fresh rebuilt engine and had extra starts on tuning and such. But in theory, isn't the one on the starter going to do the same thing as mine did fail because of heat or overstarting? Just curious what you think of that? Like is the failure rate less addingn a external solenoid?

    I have a 65 El Camino with a 350 Chevy engine I have the problem of starting when it's hot so I bought an external 1990 Ford F150 solenoid very similar to the one that you show in video. Do you remove the red battery cable to it ? It seems like the solenoid that is on the starter is also running the external solenoid????

    Thanks for the video man. I have a question. I have a total of 4 wires. I see the alternator and battery positive on the big lug, I have a smaller black wire I believe is the “S” wire, then I have another small black wire labeled “R”. I heard you mention the first two lugs but I did not hear you mention the “R” lug. My question is where does that wire land at on the new solenoid and what does it do and stand for? Thank you!

    Hi thanks for posting your videos, I'm looking to put a permanent start button in my 1987 ford f150, the solenoid switch is mounted on the fender. I'm having issues with ignition key where I have to turn past the normal to start. I'm looking to turn key toward start position and start with button. Then to shut it turn the key off. Can you tell me if I go with one wire off new button. To positive on battery and the other wire off button to the small S terminal on solenoid block, and should I put a fuse somewhere in there. Thanks for your help

    AMC used that same solenoid. My '69 AMX has one just like that. The I terminal is for the ballast resistor bypass. During cranking, the coil gets a full 12 volts from the I terminal.

    I'm looking into best way to do this I hear some people hook this up improperly and it ghosts solenoid stays on because they have there s terminal linked to the solenoid terminal on the starter, and holds power even after let off cranking. Your way seams way better. But I have a question how dose your starter know when to crank will it only get power when you turn the key all the way? I must be thinking wrong because I thought that was solenoid pops out a when the key is turned acc (not all the way) just before you turn to crank. Or is it solenoid pops out when you start cranking?

    Klowny - Thanks for taking the time to post this video. I installed this kit today on a C6 Corvette. Worked for the first two starts, then the starter stayed on (engaged and cranking) for a few extra seconds on 3rd start. Then on the 4th start, it stayed on and wouldn't tun off until I disconnected the battery. Car was not hot (only run for a few seconds between these starts), battery had been on a charger all night, solenoid was new (same kit as you show in the video) and I wired the way you have here (same as instructions in kit). Any thoughts on what caused the starter to stay on? Thanks, man.

    Is there a starter solenoid similar to this one, but instead of an 'S' and 'I' terminal, has a 'S' and 'G' terminal, where the 'G' can go to a switched ground like for a Chrysler style neutral safety switch instead of grounding through the mounting bracket?

    Helped a lot, thanks. One question, I have a mystery wire. Its 1979 mustang cobra v8, and I have a wire that i dont know where it goes. The car has an aftermarket security system in it, would it be possible that a wire frome that would go to the solenoid? It also has an engine kill switch hidden that prevents spark, but i tested that and I dont think the wire is from that because it still worked when the wire wasnt connected. Any clues?

    Got a quick question and problem. I hooked it up like you explained and it didn't start by turning the key so I jumped the S and the live side with the switch & wires and it started when I flipped the switch off it kept turning over. I unhooked the battery and took the power wire I ran from the old solenoid to the live side of the solenoid. after that I connected the switch to the live side and on the S , connected the battery and hit the switch and it started and I flipped the switch back off.. It kept running I took it for a drive and my interior lights stayed on the whole time. I have a 2005 Lincoln navigator. I had a no crank no start issue and advanced track error also a odo data error. I really need help.. Also when I was driving my speedometer wasn't working

    I know this is an older video, but I'm hoping Klowny or anyone can help. My Camaro has a remote solenoid on the inner fender. However, the positive cable from the battery goes to the other side (right side) (closest to the I terminal) and the other cable from the solenoid to the starter is on the left side (closest to the S) does this make a difference? It starts up, but want to ensure it's wired correctly. Thank you.

    I got mine all installed but all I had was some 10 ga. wire to run from the remote solenoid to the starter. It isn't sending enough power down to the starter to turn over the engine. What gauge wire do you recommend? I tested the solenoid without the wire from the solenoid down to the starter and I get over 12 volts but with the 10 gauge wire down to the starter I only get about 8 volts.

    Alright so I'm redoing the old brittle wiring on my 74 Dart and I'm still fairly new to the engine electronics/ignition systems so bear with me here. I've heard you refer to the solenoid as a relay a couple of times. Is a solenoid the same thing as a relay? Would that be why my starter doesn't have a solenoid on it but a 10gauge wire running to a relay mounted on the inner fender well instead? The motor is burnt up so If I replaced the starter with one that has a solenoid mounted on it like that really chromy looking starter in your video could I toss the old relay and just run the ignition switch wire strait off the S terminal on the solenoid. The previous owners left the car's wiring a complete CF so i'm trying to reduce the amount of wires I have running around and remote mounted relays way out in left field acting as eye soars and what not. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to organization and stuff lol.

    Hey klowney,
    Thanks for the vid! You saved me some time of recalling my original wiring.
    A few questions:
    1. when you say jump wire from original-starter-solenoid to the S terminal, I'm obviously wiring the "old" solenoid's hot (+) to the S terminal...
    then THAT S terminal wire also connects to the s-terminal-post on the new remote solenoid, correct??
    2. Also, how can I add/wire a push button start button to the new remote solenoid to have the push-button-start function in my old Chevy RV?
    Thanks in advance for answering all my questions man!

    Ok so.... the battery and the alternator goes to the left side stud of the starter SELENOID, the right side stud of the starter SELENOID goes to the fat stud in the STARTER, the S terminal in the STARTER goes to the left side small stud in the starter SELENOID "s" terminal, and in that same "s" terminal of the starter SELENOID goes the wire to KEY right??? and i have to jump the S terminal in the STARTER with the fat stud in the starter too right???

    klowny1969.. I'd like to use this Ford Solenoid as a switch to protect my house battery bank in an RV application. Do you see any problems with always having the 'key' post always energized to allow flow from my house battery bank to my DC appliances, and when I want to turn it off, I'll hit a switch I'll put on the 'key' wire? The reason why this solenoid could work well is because of how many amps I can run through it.. Thanks for the great video!

    If you bypass the starter solenoid and use the good old ford solenoid hook it the way you said but the wire running to the starter should just hook to the thick post going straight in the starter because you're bypassing the starter solenoid because I guess because it was bad, so why still run through the bad starter noid. Just saying,

      I noticed that as well, two solenoids in series is pointless. all He did was add a solenoid to energize the oe solenoid.

    • @ceolifestyles6796
      @ceolifestyles6796 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So are you saying run the right side of the Ford solenoid to the starter instead of the solenoid on the starter?

    • @gregoryvanek9038
      @gregoryvanek9038 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok...you have a heat soak issue with your GM starter. Solenoid is on the starter motor housing. If you wire the Ford remote solenoid the way he said, including the jumper, you effectively bypass the original solenoid. Look at the wiring. It’ll make sense to you. It’s a common hot rod method.

    Dude, please try to maybe do your comments a few times before you tape and post it. Very frustrating trying to follow you, you were drifting all over the place. And you go on and on and on about things that are just confusing. 'the thick stud...this one...that one...it's the thick one'. And the rambling about how you can't draw a key, who cares, just tell us what the wire of post is for and then mover on. Just point to it and say 'This thick stud' and then move on, it's just frustrating. And when you ramble on about things that are not really important, the information that IS important gets lost in the ramble. Easy to fix mate, just practice, do it a few times, watch it back on reply, and then post the one that gets to the point fast, easily and without the confusion. Your post was informative, it did show me what I needed to know, but it took about 3 times longer than it should have and I almost closed the window a dozen times out of frustration. But thank you for the effort and the information.

      Seriously I’m pretty sure he said to jumper the alt terminal of the original solenoid with the original S terminal which makes no sense 🤷🏻‍♂️ now you’ve got two solenoids working. The entire point is to bypass the original solenoid
