I can't when i see a crime against an elderly person/pensioner. How can anyone do that to poor Violet?! Like she was so sweet it seems. RIP Violet, hope you're resting easy
I was 10 when this episode came out! But I loved our monthly family gatherings watching CW. Always never understood why the Antiques Roadshow came on halfway through, but now I get it as a bit of light relief after a scary reconstruction. Living near Bristol I always felt I could help as it seemed to feature heavily. Wish they would bring it back, as there's nothing which is similar & unfortunately it isn't as if crime has gone down over the years! If I could have my time again, I'd have got into forensic science as this features as a great help as time & crime goes on through the years. Thanks for these uploads 🤓
It is back on TV - but crime has changed a lot as society and technology have changed massively. Firstly, Britain had the highest level of violent crime in Europe in the 80s - that kind of violent crime has actually gone way, way down. The kind of securicor van raids we saw in this episode just don't happen now - people aren't paid in cash anymore and most payments are electronic and card. Secondly, the technology has improved so much that any stolen cash like that would be pretty much unusable. CCTV and mobile phones have also meant that the police just aren't as dependent on witnesses coming forward like they were in the 80s. DNA has also meant that criminals are often caught much quicker. If you look at the recent case of Sarah Everard, her killer was caught within a day or two. If it had happened in the 80s, he might never have been caught or it may have taken years. If you watch the episodes of crimewatch now, they show the types of crime that happen now - most of which don't have witnesses. It's often about domestic abuse (something the 80s crimewatch would have been very wary of tackling) or it's about fraud.
My Mum lives not far from where Violet Milsom resided in Bristol. The area has been a bit Hipsterfied in recent years, but the old style flats are still the same. Interesting how Bristol has changed in 35 years. £36 a week pension money is nothing. I bet that wasn't much Even in 1985. Even now, it's still low. Her case is still unsolved sadly, and I really don't think it will be as the murderer is probably dead. How anyone can do that to a pensioner is fucking sickening! She was just an innocent old lady just living her life and speaking to her friends. It wasn't the youths who disturbed her prior as they were probably petty thugs. Was Steve her murderer? Did they ever know who he was? I actually think it was that young man she was seeing walking down the road with. All the descriptions seem to fit him. He must have used Violet for friendship, and that not just stole the little pension money he had and did sickening and depraved things to her. So sad. May she RIP xxx
This episode wasn’t particularly scary, still good though. Excellent picture quality for 33 year old episodes. Can’t wait to see what’s next 😁 Thanks @redcard74 you gem 💎 Please keep them coming!
One of the perpetrators of the Cromford robbery was finally caught in 2010 and jailed for 10 years after pleading guilty. I heard in 2010 the police had lost the original investigation file from 1985 and a prosecution was only possible because the BBC had archived the production notes for the Crimewatch reconstruction seen here and they contained sufficient detail to compensate for the lack of evidence from the police.
What happened to Violet was absolutely awful. She seemed like such a lovely woman. Sadly it doesn't seem they caught the killer. Hopefully with new forensic techniques, her killer can be found.

In regards to the Violet Milsom murder, there was no need for the mutilation, if they only intended to rob her then strangling her would have been enough, or even just tying her up without harming her.
There was no need for ANY of it, full stop, an innocent genuine pensioner, probably never harmed anyone in her life, lived for her cats, what a sick, wicked depraved thing to do a kind soul, R.I.P Violet, and whoever did that to her, judgement day awaits you........
Depraved, to do that to anyone, let alone a poor, lonely woman with only her beloved cat for company. People around obviously liked her though, she seemed to know the man she made coffee for. These murderers and criminals are depraved, maybe it was those three individuals seen coming out, who knows.
That another thing that puts me off having children. As soon as they get old enough they’ll leave you on your own and start their own lives waiting for you to die so they can get the house and bank savings. Terrible society that we have created.
Yes, I love checking up on old vehicles that have usually been sent to the scrapyard decades ago. However, every now and then I'll come across a survivor, a vehicle that defies all the odds. There's a van that is always parked in a car park not far from where I live. It's M registered in 1995 and it's still in use as a commercial vehicle! It used to be the case that you had to specify the registration, make and model to get a vehicle's details. Now all you have to do is enter the reg. It's really quite impressive.
Hi Duncan, There's two websites that are particularly helpful for finding out data about vehicles. The first is vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ just enter your desired reg and away you go. The other is hpicheck.com. The latter you have to pay to access but it provides more information than the former website. For example, HPI Check tells you whether a vehicle has been scrapped, written off etc. The former tells you when a vehicle was last taxed and MOT'ed but not what the current status is i.e. scrapped, written off, imported etc. There is also www.instantcarcheck.co.uk which is cheaper to access than HPI Check. Hope this is helpful.
They said about how surprised they were that those robbers picked that small bank because of the risk of getting less money. That’s true but there’s also less security and less chance of CCTV in the bank. Certainly at that time. That’s probably why they chose that bank to rob.
redcard74 That might be something for me to ask for as a Christmas present! And Sue Cook mentions in June 88 that it is featured in Crimewatch File. Once again, thank you for all your hard work in uploading these videos. It is great to see these old episodes for so many different reasons
Britain had the highest level of violent crime in Europe in the 80s - easy to see it reflected in some of these cases. Interesting when you think that the criminals are now today's elderly. Back then, Britain had real problems because of mass unemployment, much greater alcohol consumption than there is now (which caused a lot of problems in itself), and a real undercurrent of violence throughout society. It was the era of football hooliganism and skinheads.
Thank you for explaining this. I didn’t realise (not being from Britain) that there was so much violence there at the time. We visited in 1987 and it seemed so idyllic and peaceful for the most part. Sure, London was grittier, but watching these old Crimewatch videos is shocking to me now.
