    That is very good instruction for new riders as well as a good refresher for ALL Riders.
    I didn't hear anything about being aware of cars BLIND SPOTS but I may have missed it if you covered that.
    IF that wasn't discussed then this is what I mean by a CARS BLIND SPOT; The next time you're in your car take a look at your mirrors and you will know exactly what I mean...there is a small section close to your car that you CAN NOT SEE while INSIDE your car...A Motorcycle should NEVER ride in that BLIND SPOT. I will slowly gain on a car or any 4 wheeled vehicle until I get CLOSE TO THAT BLIND SPOT then I will accelerate thru and past that BLIND SPOT at a higher rate of speed just until I get past and in front of the vehicle a GOOD full car length or even a little farther if there's still room to safely be behind another vehicle. If I can't do that move then I will WELL STAY BACK and out of their BLIND SPOT until I can safely get past them and still have room in front of me to react safely.
    Vehicles can and do change lanes WITHOUT USING THEIR TURN SIGNALS and it takes Motorcycles by surprise. I've had and seen this happen to Motorcycle Riders more times than I can remember and the vehicle claims they didn't see the Motorcycle......I believe them too because there is a BLIND SPOT for every vehicle that the Motorcycle Rider should be aware of and get quickly past....THAT IS THE BEST THING TO DO FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY ** GET PAST THE BLIND SPOT QUICKLY to stay out of trouble.
    I've done that to Highway Patrol Cars and they know exactly what and why I do that. I have NEVER been pulled over for just accelerating past the BLIND SPOT and neither will you, unless you do it in a flagrant manner and aren't being prudent about the move.
    I realize that is a lot to take into account but it is not a subject to be taken lightly and needs a good understanding of the BLIND SPOT.
    That is one of the FIRST things I teach to any New Rider. ((( For me anyone that has less than 3 or 4 years on a Motorcycle is still a NEW RIDER. It is statistically documented by the National DOT Department that it takes A NEW DRIVER anywhere between 4 and 5 years to be an accomplished and seasoned Driver and the same holds true for Motorcycle Riders even if they've been driving 4 wheeled vehicles for decades. They are still NEW to the NEEDED DIFFERENT Things to watch out for.)))
    There are a few unwritten rules Motorcycles Riders are allowed to do for their own safety and accelerating past the BLIND SPOT is on the TOP of that list for me...that's just my opinion anyway.
    THERE IS ONE MORE THING I'd like to impart and that is keeping your head on a swivel...keep checking your mirrors and scout the road ahead looking for ANY Vehicles getting ready to pull out onto the road. There are always a few that will not see you and those are the ones that get YOU HURT and YOU should be ready to brake or change lanes long before it becomes a panic situation. That all equates to having your head on a swivel at all times. It is up to YOU, the Motorcycle Rider to keep YOURSELF safe and out of trouble because ULTIMATELY no matter who's fault it is, YOU ARE THE ONE INJURED AND HAVE TO PAY THE PRICE FOR THE OTHER VEHICLES FAULT. It just doesn't matter if they are totally and 100% at FAULT, You still have injuries and they can possible end your Riding forever. Don't let that happen to YOU.
    Sorry I got so long winded but I'm just a WEE-BIT adamant about Motorcycle safety and Watching out for all those 4 wheel Vehicles that just don't KNOW HOW to look or JUST DON'T look for Motorcycles. WE RIDERS MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY and control of ourselves a lot more than any 4 wheeled vehicle will.
    GREAT to Watch another of your videos Guys.

      @@BootsandJeansRiders WE all MUST HELP and LOOK OUT for one another.
      No matter the brand name we RIDE or what we use for head cover WE'RE FAMILY on the road.
      I may not be here except an Ol' Gentleman gave me some pointers and he told me to pass it on. I bought his used Triumph BUT, before he let me buy it he insisted he teach me how to ride it first. Being the ripe old age of 13 and taking into account I JUST HAD TO HAVE THAT BIKE OR DIE I greed.
      He's the one that first told me that it didn't matter who was at fault...YOU are the one that gets hurt and not the enclosed 4 wheel vehicle. He sure opened my mind to just what I was getting myself into. HE showed me how to anticipate the other car and MAKE A PLAN IN MY HEAD how to avoid it. THAT resonated in my head because my Baseball Coach told us the same thing. "What am I going to do with the ball if it is hit to me? No, runners so I throw to first base,,,One runner on 1st I throw to 2nd base...." IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME THING ON A MOTORCYCLE.
      "Where do I go if that truck crossed the yellow line towards ME? What do I do if that Mattress or Chair flies out of that Pickup? Where is that dog going? What's that Deer going to do? That rock looks pretty loose up there.........It is never ending what he taught me to look out for and if he hadn't then I may not still be riding.
      Lucus Washington and his entire family was from Alabama and worked for the adjoining Ranch and he and I became BEST of friends since we bought our land. He passed 1992 and I cried...he was an amazingly kind and gentle man.
      When we get older we find we somehow need to pay tribute to lost ones that meant more than life to us.
      YOU can DELETE this reply if it doesn't fit but Lucus was something else and I never saw or thought of him ANYTHING other than MY BEST FRIEND.

    Great video guys. I've been a road captain with my HOG chapter in Orlando, Florida for the past five years and discuss these same techniques with our members before our group rides. Although we use radios to enable the road captain to communicate with the sweep we also go over and use hand signals during a small safety meeting before each ride. Great job. Kudos

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's fantastic. I think everyone should take a Road Captain course even if they don't have any intentions of leading a group. Hand signals are one very important aspect that we forgot to mention, it add an extra safety feature during the ride.

    Saturday and Sunday morning are great hours to practice! I always try to not ride at all during commuting hours. People are in a hurry to get home, mad working a job they don't like and they may be in a sour mood. It's just the worse time to drive let alone ride! I love the coms between you guys while you demonstrate! Great video guys! I try not to ride in the middle lane when I'm alone, you are always in someone's blind spot.

      Hey Gixxer Sisters, Yeah that's exactly how it should be done. We just done this with a fairly new rider last weekend. They got their motorcycle endorsement in January and haven't had an opportunity to ride on the freeway, and of course the virus slowed their riding to a crawl. So we done off and on ramp ridding with them. Had a blast.

    I'm a new subscriber and love your channel. I enjoy hiway riding almost as much as back roads. At some level it feels like less to worry about. Signage is typically good (better than back roads) and everyone should be going in the same direction. One of Rich's suggestions on Lane choice surprised me. The suggestion was to pick the fast lane over middle or right lane. I prefer middle for two reasons. One-I fell like I have more escape options. Two-In the fast lane there's always someone coming up on my 6, which means you've got to move over anyway. As before, love the channel. Keep up the good work.

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Don, welcome to the channel, we really appreciate it.
      Yeah I (Rich) like the fast lane because no vehicles are coming from my left.
      I agree that there is always a driver coming fast the rear, but that seems to happen in every lane. Excellent reason for liking the middle lane, Kake also likes the middle lane . When we lead group rides we usually ride in the number 2 lane, depending on the riders experience.

    Really nice video with patience and simple tips. I also like to caution new riders of the speed transition when exiting the freeway. Pay attention to your speedometer so that you don't misjudge. After riding at the higher speeds for a while you can be moving faster than your senses are telling you returning to secondary roadways. Above all be careful and enjoy the ride.

If you get too wide on either side we cannot see you and it’s a wreck waiting to happen. Pass us with some authority. If we blow a tire, any motorcycle behind us or on the side of the blowout is definitely going to have a really bad day. If you can’t see the trucks mirrors then they can’t see you.

    Good and solid advice. I like the part about what lane to ride in, or chose the one you're comfortable in. When I commute to work there's a stretch of a 3 lane city highway that's about 3-5 miles long. I tend to stay in the left/cruising lane as the middle and far right lanes are used by drivers and buses to enter and exit the highway, creating a lot of jockeying wolf-packs during rush hour. In the cruising lane (a 3- 4 minute ride) I generally only have to deal with who's ahead or behind me. It makes for a straight shot to the bridge I take to get to the next state. On a freeway It's definitely different as I tend to ride as you suggested by staying in the lane that's best to ride in, or somewhere towards to middle.

    I strongly suggest not riding in the number one lane. That lane is designed for overtaking exclusively. It's dangerous because it is a lane where you are likely to encounter speeders driving well over the posted speed limits speeders that are likely to become angry tailgate any vehicle that makes them slow down. Motorcycles are particularly vulnerable to aggressive drivers in this situation and therefore I only use lane number one for overtaking. I suggest using the number the 2 Lane for normal highway riding. K

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I must agree that the number one lane is designed and should be for overtaking. And in some states it is mandatory that is is only used for that purpose (unfortunately not California). And if a angry tailgater approaches, its impossible to predict if they will go around or run you over. For a new or apprehensive rider the number one lane is very intimidating. Great suggestion for using the number two lane.

    • @BootsandJeansRiders
      @BootsandJeansRiders  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The main thing would suggest while riding in a windy situation is to relax and not grip your handle bars tightly. Make your corrections with very little as possible. Tensing up can cause you to over correct which in turn may create additional problems. We got caught in a severe wind and dust storm while heading to Minden NV. Kake was on her Honda Shadow 750. She got knocked around and it was her relaxation on the grips the made it a little easier to get through it.

      One thing I do in wind is: for example if the wind is blowing hard from the right, I will ride in the right 1/3 of my lane. That way if a strong gust hits me and pushes me to the left I still have 2/3 of the lane to recover from the unexpected gust.
