  • For a "value brand" (cheap!) there's a lot going on here on the Electro-Brand 2961. I don't fully understand the gyro antenna which only seems to function on AM and looks like what other radios call a direction finder. The null indicator only seems to deflect out of the optimal range on certain FM signals which is probably a good thing. I originally thought the left antenna was for everything except AM and CB but the spot on the board doesn't indicate it's for SW and it's useless receiving SW signals. I can only receive SW using the mini-external antenna input on the front face. A pesky frozen screw is keeping me from getting all of the way inside to clean pots and switches and check the SW connection. But it's not a bad performer for as old as it is, with a working cassette player to boot!

    Thanks for leaving this video here for reference ! I have the sister model 2950 and did not realize the antenna input was for short wave. I made a speaker wire short wave antenna and now get some of the short wave stations ! Thanks !!!

    For such a cheap "off-brand", this really does an excellent job, especially simply for what it is and what it does!!! Great video, Dan!!!

      ...and for how old it is too. Thanks for watching, Douglas!

    Excellent information on the 2961. I just picked one up on eBay. Your video gives me a lot of info.Thank you! Liked and Subbed!

    I recently purchased a Rhapsody RY-611 off ebay. Got it for 1.75 +shipping. No one else bid on it because it was untested and filthy. Looked like it was used at a grain elevator for a dozen years.
    Anyway, was dissapointed when i pulled it from the box and it was so light in weight. I thought it was going to be even worse than i was imagining. (wasn't expecting much)
    I cleaned it up, fixed an antenna problem and a tape player issue, cleaned it inside and out usual stuff. And it works great, terrific sensitivity, really a nice radio for what these sell for! Would recommend these "cheapos" to anyone who wants a pretty good performing radio without breaking the budget.
    The direction finder on top of these is just for fine tuning AM broadcasts.

      The so-called direction finder is indeed a sensitive ultra long ferrite loop or air-loop antenna which exclusively works for medium wave and/or long wave.

    It is at the metro airport, the "traffic" callout indicates its an uncontrolled airspace

    The ferrite bar is for medium wave band. The antenna on top of the radio is also only for medium wave. Whip antennae are for all other bands. LW (if it has this) is also on a ferrite loop. Sometimes shortwave low band(below 10 000 kHz) is also controlled with the rotating loop(gyro-tenna). I used to have a Radio Shack product with this antenna arrangement. (DX100). Panasonic RF 1165, 2200, 2400.

    The null indicator is used on the FM broadcast band. When it's centered you are tuned in accurately. Unfortunately it's often not working anymore.

    I've got a similar, but smaller ElectroBrand model from 1975. It has the same split-band gimmickry, vinyl-clad case and a very similar board layout, but fewer bands and a smaller speaker (with a horrific germanium push-pull 2 transformer amp). I'm guessing that one has an amplifier chip somewhere; it's got much better sound than mine. They seem to have gotten that one right, and I'll bet it sold for a bargain price too.

    This is one of my favorite radios...I have several of this model. I think the gyro-antenna is actually the AM antenna(?) I think that ferrite arrangement inside the radio is part of the shortwave tuning circuit(?)

      Thanks for watching this video and commenting on it and on the Worldstar MG-6100 video too. You've given some me good extra details I didn't know.

      What makes the confusion is about 4 or 5 brands used this same radio mold and they all wired it up differently with different setups and arrangements, its very peculiar. @@DanOConnorTech

    While that _is_ a Mic input, you can also use it as Auxiliary. I have a Reader's Digest RDA-127 and I use it to play music through it via smartphone. Works great. Just don't crank the volume on your smartphone or you'll get static distortion.

    i got an old tape recorder at an estate sale with GE rechargeable C cell batteries! They leaked this really stubborn stuff and it corroded the circuits inside.

    Have you use some white vinegar on the screw? Works wonders. Great video...always a unique piece. The leakage could have been caused by a different set of batteries.

      J - White vinegar was the first thing I tried! I made a video on its cleaning benefits in 2015: th-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=oSWVSX66WZw

    The gyro antenna is most likey for AM radio, it's on other radios like the Tecsun 2000, the Eton Satellite 750 and a Sanyo RP-8880.

    These were off brand, inexpensive radios. Considering that, it works quite well. Just drill that battery screw out.

    • @mistermatix8241
      @mistermatix8241 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Anderson I was gonna suggest drilling the screw, and try to get the remaining thread out with pliers, easy

      Sometimes you need to destroy to save. Yes I remember lots of these off brands with borderline poor engineering. Yes they may be sold through magazine offers, full of unusual features to make the sale. Tons of controls, several antennas, tape player, fake bands, load er up! Dazzle them silly.

      I'll probably have to resort to that, but I'm still hoping for a less destructive solution. Thanks for watching!

    These Radios were made by the same people at the same place in China.....Electro Band was a cheap version of Chain Store models like Wards or Sears...if mods are made U can get more from them....

    @kevmichael2064 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had one of those....back in the 1980s...be aware that DF antenna will disconnect it's self.... because it was not made right....U are slowly pulling the wires.... your AM will be lost!!!

    I would have just drilled the head off the screw, and once the plastic is out of the way grabbed the remaining stud and twist out the screw.

    I just picked one of these up at Goodwill for $10. Can't pick up anything on it, though.
