Those Sun recordings got to me when I was searching around for what inspired Dylan and the Beatles, and later (later than I care to admit here) his country records from the seventies caught my ear as essential listening for any American. When Jerry Lee Lewis sings gospel music, though, something weird and therefore important is going on. This gets to the heart of America. You're drinkin' all day, paying for sex (though you're getting good at avoiding that inconvenience), and terrorizing the subordinate part of your community along with your clan buddies. After facilitating a murder the night before, you routinely go to church on Sunday morning. There the preacher talks about the example Jesus set for us, and you stand up and sing about that. Then you head for the drive-thru liquor store and start casting about for the next object of your pretence affection, and someone powerless you can get away with abusing. Life goes on. There is an all-American tension inherent in that scenario that defines the basest line of our culture, such as it is. We've become adept at this juggling act, so voting for Donald Trump, as a defender of all that's American, is a contortion we're completely prepared to take in stride.

Whether or not you believe is irrelevant. God is real and on the throne. You will stand before him one day and give account of your life and whether you accepted his gift of salvation or not.
