I HAVE BEEN STUDYING ENGLISH ABOUT 2,5 YEARS TOTAL WITH STOPS GAPS OBVIOUSLY BETWEEN CERTAINTS LEVELS, I STARTED AT A2 LEVEL , NOW I AM DOING THE C2, EVERY LEVEL OF ENGLISH THAT I ACHIEVED WAS BASED ON GRAMMAR COURSES, EXCEPT BY THE PART OF B1 AND B2 LEVEL, THAT I DECIDED TO TAKE THOSE PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON GROUP SPEAKING CLASSES, C1 WAS BASED ON GRAMMAR AND USED TO BASE MY STUDIES ON FACE 2 FACE PROGRAM, AFTER THAT WHEN I FINISHED C1 I DECIDED TO GIVE SOME PRIVATE CLASSES FOR 1.5 YEARS UNTIL I DECIDED TO TAKE THE FINAL LEVEL WHICH IS C2.
I AM REALLY TIRED I THINK AT THIS POINT, MAY BE IS FOR MY ACTUAL STYLE OF LIFE OR MAY BE FOR MY OVERLOAD OF ACTIVITIES PROBABLY.
I DECIDED TO CHANGE MY STRATEGY BECAUSE I WANTED TO ACHIEVE THE CPE EXAM, I DON'T WANT TO BE LINGUIST OR TEACHER REALLY, I AM ACTUALLY STUDYING PROGRAMMING AND I BELIEVE THAT I NEED IT BECAUSE I CAN WORK FOR ANY COMPANY IN THE WORLD, SO I AM CURRENTLY STUDYING WITH 3 BOOKS NOW:
      1. ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE (ADVANCED) , (IN THE PAST I USED TO STUDY SOME CHAPTERS FROM INTERMEDIATE AND BASIC GRAMMAR IN USE)
      2. OBJECTIVE PROFICIENCY BOOK ( INTERESTING BUT QUITE DEMMANDING , YOU NEED TO SPENT SEVERAL MINUTES TO COMPLETE A PAGE, NOT SO BORING AND IS NOT SO HEAVY AS ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE).
      3. COMMON MISTAKES AT PROFICIENCY (THE EASY ONE I THINK, REALLY ENJOYABLE, THE SHORTEST ONE, I AM CONSIDERING TO ADD THE PREVIOUS LEVEL AS WELL "COMMON MISTAKES AT ADVANCE C1 LEVEL")
      4. FLASH CARDS ON ANKI WEB, AND DOING COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT BY WATCHING SERIES ON NETFLIX COMBINING THIS WITH LANGUAGE REACTOR EXTENSION ON GOOGLE CHROME, AMAZON PRIME, PODCASTS,TH-cam, SOME SHORT TEXTS, BECAUSE I NOZED NORMALLY WHEN I DECIDED TO READ I AM A KINESTHESIC LEARNER, ALSO I SUFFER WITH MY EYES, EYES STRAIN, MOST OF MY BOOKS I HAVE DOWLOADED FROM THE INTERNET, THEY ARE TOO EXPENSIVES, SO PRINTER AND PAPER SHEETS HAVE BEEN MY BEST ALLIED) .
      PERSONAL THOUGHTS:
      - YOU CAN GET MAY BE TO THE SAME POINT BY CHOOSING THE GRAMMAR BASED AND STEPHEN KRASHEN TECHINIQUE, OTHERWISE KRASHEN'S TECHNIQUE I THINKS IS SLOWER, AND GRAMMAR BASED FASTER BUT TIRING.
      - STEPHEN'S TECHNIQUE IS AN EFFICIENT WAY TO STUDY, YOU LEARN NEW THINGS OR INTERESTING THINGS FOR YOU AT THE SAME TIME LEARNING ENGLISH, MORE FUNNY YOU CAN BE MORE CONSISTENT IF YOU STRUGGLE WITH THIS PROBLEMS.
      - BASED ON GRAMMAR TECHNIQUE , TIRING, YOU LEARN NEW THINGS BUT RELATED TO THINGS MAY BE YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED, IT IS WORKS ANYWAY, BUT MORE FOCUSED ON ACHIEVE THIS CERTIFICATIONS FROM THE BUREAU OF OXFORD AND CAMBRIDGE.
-I BET MORE TO COMBINES THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS.
      - I HAVE BEEN TEACHING ENGLISH TO MY STUDENTS BY USING GRAMMAR BASED BOOKS (NEW HEADWAYS AND ENGLISH FILE AMERICAN /UK VERSION BOOKS PROGRAMS), THE REALITY HERE IS NOT A GOOD WAY MAY BE, BECAUSE MOST OF MY STUDENTS THINK THEY CAN NOT LEARN ENGLISH BECAUSE THAT WAY IS REALLY TIRING AND SO DEMMANDING FOR THEIR LIVES, THEY HAVE TO COMBINE THE ENGLISH STUDIES WITH THEIR WORK AND PERSONAL LIFE , THEY NEED TO PUT LOTS OF EFFORT TO ACHIEVE A LEVEL, MAY BE IS A GOOD OPTION TO MAKE THOSE BOOKS SHORTER ( DECREASE 12 UNITS TO 8), OR CHANGING THE TOPICS INSIDE, BY REPLACING ALL THOSE IMPOSED BY THE BUREAU TO GET THE STUDENTS STICKY TO LEARN ENGLISH, OR MAY BE COMBINE THE BEST OF TWO WORLDS , DECREASING GRAMMAR AND UNITS AND REPLACING THE TOPICS AND LEARN THE GRAMMAR ACCORDINGLY TO THE LEVEL).
      - MOST OF MY STUDENTS ARE NOT INTERESTED ON THINGS RELATED TO UK OR U.S. CULTURE, SOME OF THEM PREFER COVER TOPICS LIKE MAY BE CROSSFIT, OR UFC, OR BOOKS RELATED TO SAILING FOR INSTANCE OR MAY BE BOOKS IN ENGLISH FOCUSED ON ITALIAN OR FRENCH CULTURE.
      - AT THIS LEVEL IT HAS BEEN SO DIFFICULT TO FIND A TEACHER WHO DOESN'T COST ME AND ARM AND A LEG WHO TEACHES C2 LEVEL, MY PERSONAL CASE I AM JUST "JOGGING" ( JUST DOING IT WITH COMPANY) WITH MY ACTUAL TEACHER OF C2 LEVEL, WE DEVELOP OUR OBJECTIVE PROFICIENCY BOOK AND KEEP DOING IT, OTHERWISE MY ACTUAL TEACHER IS LEARNING AS THE SAME I AM, SO IS NOT THE BEST TEACHER, AND I CAN NOT AFFORD OTHER ONE FOR NOW , BUT HE STILL PUSHING ME TO STUDY, AND THAT IS WHAT I NEED.
-I TRIED WITH OTHER BOOKS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, BUT I DECIDED THAT IS GOING TO BE MORE DIFFICULT ON MY PROCESS, NONETHELESS AFTER ACHIEVING MY CPE, I WOULD LIKE TO DO THOSE BOOKS BY USING ANKI , AND THOSE BOOKS ARE:
      1.ENGLISH VOCABULARY IN USE
      2.ENGLISH IDIOMS IN USE (ADVANCED)
      3.ENGLISH PHRASAL VERBS IN USE.
      4.ENGLISH COLLOCATION IN USE.
      5. KEEP LEARNING BY USING JUST KRASHEN AND HAVE ONE ON ONE CLASSES WITH PEOPLE FROM SOUTHAFRICA, INDIANS ,ASIATICS, AMERICANS, BRITISH AND SO ON BY SPEAKING ENGLISH.

    Wow, this is so motivating.
In my personal view, for many people including myself, it is easy to start studying grammar books, but very difficult to finish them, much less solving all the questions in those books. Knowing that "Being consistent is the key to success" and living according to it is very much different. You are amazing.
I felt that I've gotten stuck in the same level of English for many years. I'm gonna try "the blue" and "the green" books. I hope I can talk English fluently like you someday.
Thank you for being a wonderful motivator!

With this mindset, you'll definitely be able to achieve fluency in English! I understand the frustration of feeling stuck (I've been there!), but regular practice IS the key here.
Your English is awesome, by the way! I think you're underestimating your level. 🙂

hello beauty.... there is a concept called "diminishing return" and it simply applies to everything in life... in terms of language, if you master 3000 most used words, you can OWN almost 85% of the language... but to understand the 90% of the language, you basically need 10K words ... so the return is diminishing almost exponentially... since you've exposed yourself to massive amount of English by reading and listening, you must have already mastered a decent amount of language....
and yesss... mass exposure to language really works... I only recommend you to collect full sentences from the advanced grammar book you already finished.. write these full sentences down on your notebook and revise regularly without memorizing.... just like reading a book... you will get 100 percent really soon ... the brain is really designed to read.... keep up good work... thank you for your video... I'm not native either...👍

I´ve been studying Spanish for 25 months but, like a ancient Jew trying to save my religion. Saying that I take it deadly serious is an understatement. I´m 58 and wisdom has taught me a few things. #1, we all want different things from our studies. #2, we all learn differently. For me, after a month of doing it just like everyone else, I could feel the frustration building. «This is not going fast enough for me!» so, I looked at SPANISH, the whole language. I consulted old experts. Language is made of only three things 1. Vocabulary in context 2. Grammar including idioms 3. Verb forms extracted out of grammar. That´s it. So, I started an in-context vocabulary list which is now 16,000 entries entirely in-context word-to-word. I studied ALL the grammar, just like you did, only in three months upfront. Daily, I orally practice verb forms in all tenses with imagination. I´m C1 level reading, writing, comprehension and pronunciation. It´s only been 25 months so, my speaking ability is lagging behind the rest which is human, totally normal. Part of the problem shyness and fear but, I´m working on it. I highly recommend my model to anyone.

I'm so glad that I found this video, because I keep struggling with the same thing. I consume a lot of media in English (especially books of nonfiction) and I can understand it quite well. But when I try to write, I feel hesitant and insecure. Some things (such as the present perfect x past simple usage) have always been difficult for me, regardless of the fact that I've been using English daily (passively, most of the time) for over a decade. I thought I was exceptionally stupid for not learning through reading and listening as much as people said I would.
And since I'm thinking about becoming an English teacher, I've decided to study grammar. The blue book was fine, but the green one (for advanced learners) is kicking my ass, and I'm only on unit 5 lol
PS.: I saw in a comment that your native language is Russian, which is my favorite language! I've tried learning it too and it was extremely hard. If I had more time and mental energy, I'd try to study more, because it's a beautiful language and I love Russian music (like Molchat Doma).

    • @LadyGiraffeEnglish
      @LadyGiraffeEnglish  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Good luck with your grammar studies! You're doing it great, and I'm sure you'll be able to really understand and use English grammar easily after a little bit of time.
That's really cool that you're interested in Russian! It's a beautiful language, but I wouldn't wish to learn it from scratch. Being a native speaker is way easier. :) The grammar is something else.
Sometimes I want to learn German just because I love so many German metal bands.

In my opinion learning grammar through only reading and listening as it is stated in the theory you mentioned is not enough. Its important to learn all those rules and do exercises. Also exams like Cambridge certification has the use of English part that evaluates the knowledge of grammar separately.

Not only the fact of getting 82% but the discipline of going through the whole book.
I read about Krashen theory, I think it works for me to some extent.
In my opinion, learning Essential grammar is helpful, especially for the early stage.
Yet, diving deep into it could be frustrating for some and it might hinder the process of learning.
Thank you so much for your video and your valuable insights.

    • @LadyGiraffeEnglish
      @LadyGiraffeEnglish  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! 😊
Learning grammar when you're a beginner is essential, that's for sure. You won't be able to understand written sentences without at least some knowledge of grammar. Without grammar, it's all just a jumbled mess of words.
Krashen's theory is not perfect and has its flaws, but the idea that you need to read and listen to a lot of stuff to become fluent in your target language is solid. Output is as important as input, in my opinion, though.

I took my last IELTS test before going though the Advanced Grammar in Use, so it wasn't really helpful for my test preparation. It's great that you have a good grammar book to study from, but you'd probably benefit from focusing a bit more on your most common mistakes.
