Ok, guys, negative reviews are never easy for me to release, but here we go. Did I miss anything in the vid? How can you actually use Sub Ninja in its current form? Lemme know down below, thanks!

    • @Schnitz14

The use of an oscilloscope for electronic bass music is to do a very precise analysis of the low-end, in order for exemple to have a perfect kick/bass relationship. If you take for example psytrance or techno, having your kick and bass in phase will make all the difference in the world. Without an oscilloscope, I'd say it's nearly impossible to have a low end which can compete with today's standards. Oscilloscopes are used all the time for that. I haven't tried Sub Ninja yet, but it looks like it has features that doesn't exist in other oscilloscopes (or I don't know them if they do). For example, the ability to see in which key your kick tail ends (which will allow for a better alignment with the bass, or a better choice of kick).

    • @FoliaSound
      @FoliaSound  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I got you, but there are plenty of free and terrific working oscilloscopes out there. Wave Observer is my fav one. Sub Ninja dod it all wrong, I'm afraid :(

@@Schnitz14 Arrangement choices and getting complementary sounding elements is much more important than
getting phase cohesion looking through an Oscilloscope. If you (you as i any you in general not you in specific) cant get a tight low end without constantly looking at optical aids then the Oscilloscope should be the last of your worries.
Your ear should be able to tell you 1) if they fit together 2) if they are sounding Off when playing together. 3) Then you can play with phase without any optical aid by simply moving them agains each other while occasionally switching the phase.
There is the „mathematical“ approach where some producers take the „Perfekt method“ way where they think there is such thing as doing it all right and usually these are the ones that make the most boring stuff like Ibiza hits Top 400 that sound flawless but say nothing and get forgotten after 1 year , replaced by the next Top 400.
I am pretty sure most legendary tracks producers have not used Oscilloscopes as the level of resolution they offer today was not always the case. "today's standards“ is -2 to -3 lufs of dead distorted and compressed flat music.
i can hardly imagine Juan Atkins going „Hmmm when i look at the Oscilloscope it shows me that its all wrong! I am so depressed! I will not finish the track until i have the most perfect phase in the Universe!“
This is not meant as an attack. I just see it in a lot less absolute way than "I'd say it's nearly impossible to have a low end which can compete with today's standards „

I’ve used this plug-in as a reference tool. I place it after metricAB. I first gain match a reference track in metricAB and look at the amplitude/wave shape at various frequency ranges. Then I switch back to my mix and see how it looks different. Not trying to completely match it. but it will be obvious if 40hz is much louder or quieter on your mix compared to the original. You could obviously use any oscilloscope with a filter to do this. But visually the subninja does make this process just a tiny bit easier if I’m checking a specific sub range. So for me it’s NOT an incredible game changing plug-in or anything but I’ll occasionally reach for it (or another oscilloscope) if I’m unsure what’s happening in a specific low end range. Also it’s around $20 so if it saves you a few minutes here and there… sure.

It's a super duper plugin, you can look at the sound wave:)
At the moment there are a lot of "super" plugins with the AI prefix that just have multiple EQ presets. And it's called a mastering and mixing assistant, but really you turn a knob to the right and you get top shelf on the lower frequencies and vice versa, and there's two knobs, and the cost is at least 100-200 dollars.
Thank you for your honest opinion.

I assumed it was like PsyScope, which I can put on multiple tracks to check the phase alignment between my kick and bass, but it seems like it cannot do that? Seems a bit pointless, especially if the filters change the phase, which seems like a strange choice.
And you're definitely not wasting our time with reviews like this, it's even more important to know what plugins to *not* buy than to know what plugins are worth buying.

My question for you is this:
Why would you make a video to review a plugin that you didn’t take the time to learn how it works or what you can actually do with it before you made the video? It would make sense if it was a “live, unboxing of a product” type of video, but you did not live stream this, you made a video and edited it and then uploaded it, if I am not mistaken.
That said, an honest review is an honest review, albeit an uneducated (on this plugin) review in this case.

its because many „experts“ are peeing their pants thinking of the possibility of being wrong and even worse the terrifying possibility being called out for it in public. So its easier to say „hmmm ah yeah cool. But lets move on“ instead of „i am not sure i hear anything different“ (random example)

Great review at the same time we should also appreciate the Plugin developer to make a tool like this , Simply by turning the low cut filter to linear phase will make this plugin a perfect tool to have as there not enough easy real time tool like this , As stated in the review the low frequency rumble would have been caused by this plugin itself due to phase shift and not in the project file , i even ran this plugin inside plugin doctor that proved this review is true , i really hope for an update with linear phase very soon because we should encourage when actual music producer makes new innovative plugins

Sure thing! Let's add any optimization, so that anything more than one instance doesn't stutter the graphics. Let's also add multiple instances displayed at once and then we talk. So far - this is just a very simple, yet badly executed idea, which isn't new at all - an oscilloscope plus lowpass. I won't change my mind here, I'm afraid.

I found a different tutorial that explains it better. it doesn't actually "do" anything, it's a utility tool. i think the problem you had was putting it on a 2 track or "mixed" song. imagine using it during the production or mixing stage to help identify problem areas in the sub frequencies where we have trouble hearing. I'm sure there are other tools one could use the key difference is this is time based instead of frequency based. its not "completely" useless but i also don't know if I would spend any money on it.

@@FoliaSound top display shows the frequencies below what you set, this allows me to see where the bass is, how loud it is relative to the kick. After listening to a bunch of tracks, I saw where I was making mistakes with having kicks overlapping just slightly, and also I was mixing my bass too loud. The plug in showed me all this information. I guess it comes down to how good you are at mixing, I’m shite and been at it for 34 years, I’ve had plenty of releases but never felt sure of myself. I've seen this and I consider it just scandalous. He's trying to say something about the plugin, he cuts the vid all the time. I know when and why you do it as a youtuber: when you have nothing to say or don't say the truth. I stopped watching him long time ago, when he said in one of his vids, that his reviews are "as honest as possible".
Wow, "as possible"? What does that mean? What's not possible, when being honest? Any limitations? Hidden deals? Too many questions, no answers.
This guy is not honest, he's afraid to criticize anything, he seems to sit in the pocket of large plugin companies. His "snake oil" series became a joke, anything can be snake oil, but nothing ever is. Always some blurred explanations, some video cuts, some affiliate links.
