This was FANTASTIC! Just do it, wear it, be it, own it! 😎
I just turned 58 and I love fashion! I rock combat boots, camo cargo pants, satin leopard skirts with a David Bowie t-shirt, bold lips, funky headbands and cool belts. I get compliments all the time on my sense of style and my response is usually “ thanks I love it too ☺️”
I just have fun living my best life!

Amen. Since when does being over 30, 40, 50, 60, etc. mean we need to start wearing boring, boxy, shapeless, colorless clothing? Don't blend in, STICK OUT! :) (I'm in my late 50s, too.)

“I can’t pull this off” how many times have I said that to myself 🤦‍♀️. To celebrate turning 50 I grew my hair out! What?! Now at 55 I wear red lipstick, have big sunglasses and wore a two piece swimsuit at the beach! You inspire me that you are never too old to punch up your style and take risks with fashion and your dreams. Thank you. Heading to Paris for the first time next week- can’t wait to find a fashion “risk” there.

Several years ago my daughters and I were visiting NYC and went in Bergdorfs. I spilled something on my scarf, probably hot chocolate. An employee or two attended to me. Then one of them took it somewhere to be cleaned and brought it back. They not only made me feel comfortable, they made me feel like a VIP as I received such amazing hospitality!

This is probably the best fashion advice I've ever seen. I think all of us secretly admire someone who takes fashion risks. Even if we don't love the look, we admire their boldness for wearing it. I also agree that the only person we should dress to please is ourselves. Stop trying to impress other people and wear what makes you happy. Thank you for sharing this great advice and your personal stories!

Hi Tammy, at age 53 I had a heart attack last year and this July I had another one and was about to have another if they didn’t act fast. Since my first I don’t care I wear what I want , I don’t follow fashion but I like to look good and what suits my tiny height and frame. I always get comments sometimes they are really cheap clothes but it’s the way you accessorise. That is what I play up to.

You will not believe how quickly the next 25 years will fly by. I am 75 and my REAL life began at 50 when I retired early to go sailing the Caribbean with my mate.We did that for almost five years then we sold the boat and bought a home to renovate in the tropics. We did that and I had the time of my life decorating it with tile murals, entire painted wall murals, a lovely flowering tropical garden with many orchids. We socialized, had big parties, got to know the local professional class and many expats. We found our favorite lake resort here, oddly owned by an American.
Each five years flew by like it was a year when I was working ....I was a college professor and administrator , I loved my work, but THIS life has been so so much happier and calmer than that one.
I started slowing down in my 70s. I just didnt have the energy to cook for crowds anymore. We started entertaining on a much smaller scale. I painted canvases, I read more, we watched films at night downloaded in English mostly. It has been a terrifiic and oh so happy life, but it has shot by in a flash.
My mate is 80 now and we are more homebodies. Treasure every day and make your life FULL with what you love to do. All the things you wanted to do....all the things you said "I will do that later", well have a good sit down and think.
After our home was done here, I sat down and wrote those down. I had given up painting canvases when my baby was born...zero time for that, gardening, well I had had a small garden, but nothing like I have planted here. Now it is mature and I go out on my lower terrace each day and paint. I have the time,,no responsibilities to or for others except cooking for my mate but now months are shooting my me like days did when I was working. I look up and it is Christmas...every three months it seems. So use the time now to fantasize first, what you want to enjoy. Revisit those dreams you had of who you would be as an adult.....who was that? And does any of it fit who you want to be in future.
I find I now spend time doing lots of things I did when young before children. Reading ALOT. Painting. Playing outdoors, if I can call gardening playing, and it does feel like playing...time grows shorter for me. I have about a dozen paintings I want to paint. I have a loooong reading list of newer books I want to read in psychology, my field as a professor. I am never going to do research again, but it is so good to get caught up on entirely NEW fields of psychology research that have come along like evolutionary psych. Just for the joy of learning. On Monday I will have cataract surgery to ensure I can KEEP on reading til the end.
Life is going to go forward anyway...it is GREAT though to get to go back and NOW do the things you didnt have time for while you were being a good Mom.
Enjoy it all, because I promise you, it will fly by !

As a 55 year old woman, my anxiety over aging is growing and that coupled with the fact that I don't lead a lifestyle that gels with "dressing up" and I'm not at my perfect weight, all of this snowballs into self doubt over many, many things including what I feel I can wear, etc.., even though I love all things girlie. There is a comment below that I think is so true: even if we don't like the look, we admire the boldness for wearing it. To me that is secretly admiring in someone else what we don't think we have the guts to do. This is SUCH good topic because WE need to become not only the one that is admired for our boldness, but we need to revel in that freedom of expression. Your suggestion of starting with small things is great, OR, if you are tired of being mousy, just jump in the deep end and go for it with several new looks all at once. Oh My! I especially loved that you LOVE the looks that you 'dared' to try! You used the word 'FUN' a lot... and we all need more of that! Thanks, Erin for a great topic!

Dopamine dressing is a great idea 💡
I’m 47 and I had to break out of the “shroud of black”…and neutrals look. I got excited about bright colors and color blocking. I loved the new take on mishmashes patterns. I started by buying some brightly colored acrylic accessories and some cheap bright sandals for the summer. I have found so much inspiration by getting away from the same old colors and lines. I think until you feel more confident, it is best to look at what if available new. Looking at what is new helped me get a feel for a fresh and updated look.

This really hit home for me. I am in my 70s, and still a practicing attorney. Most of my friends also work in what "back in the day" were traditionally male fields. Doctors, lawyers, college professors, corporate executives, even some retired military. Not to whine, but often back then we were the only women in the room, not always well treated, and always always on guard. Like, for example, when I was asked during a job interview with 3 middle aged white male attorneys with a prestigious law firm what kind of birth control I was using. Taking risks with fashion would have just made us more vulnerable and given "them" more ammunition. Fast forward 45 years, and I no longer feel that vulnerability. But many of my female friends with similar histories find my interest in fashion kind of perplexing. Not in a mean way, but just in a way that makes me feel a little self-conscious. I am thinking to myself...we are still feminists, we don't all have to dress like Betty Friedan. No disrespect to Betty Friedan, whom I admire greatly. My point is just that we have more freedom now, as well we should. Your video just reinforces my thoughts on this subject; I fought for this, and now I'm going to enjoy it in my own way. In make-up, maybe with a bold lip, wearing perfume, and sometimes dressed in fashion a little on the edge.

Thank you for telling your story. Young women today have no idea how short a time we've had anything like equality in the workplace. They take it for granted, and assume that it's always been this way and will only get better for them, when the pendulum could so easily swing the other way. But I remember growing up when there were three professions for 99% of women in the workforce that were careers, requiring education and training: nurse, teacher, secretary. Other than that, we could be sales clerks. That was pretty much it. Even in the 80s, when I was a young mother starting college classes for the first time, people I knew assumed that I was going into fashion, when I was studying chemistry. I told someone that I was a Phi Beta Kappa, and he thought it was a sorority. In the 90s, I started my graduate studies; one woman in my department refused to talk to me because she thought I was an intellectual lightweight - and she was leaving to become a nun! (Some nun, judging me without ever having spoken to me.) It illustrates the problem. Even wearing nail polish would get you ostracized.

This video was so well timed. I always struggle with wanting to wear things that I love, but feeling “too fancy” for the ‘burbs. I always feel like I need to tone it down to fit in. And there’s that voice in my head that says I’m too old to wear certain things. Yet, I still want to challenge myself to take risks too. Yesterday I wore a fabulous green linen dress with some great colorful jewelry and worried all day that people were judging me. Thanks for the reminder and encouragement to just do what makes us feel happy. Fashion is for fun and for our own enjoyment. Great message.

Oh my gosh! I totally did the dress thing last fall. I found a FABULOUS red lace dress, very much a Latina look, high-low, bright and very much out of my box. I had no idea where I’d wear it-just loved it. My daughter’s a photographer and for my birthday I had her do a photo shoot. We all LOVE the pictures. That alone is worth the purchase.

    1. Longtime believer in a bold lip. My eyes are so dry and sensitive I can't wear much eye makeup. But a bold lip and well-shaped brows are my look.
    2. Thank you so much for sharing your Before stories. It's easy to look at the confident you and think you were born with great style and all the answers. It makes it easier for the rest of us to know it's possible to grow.
    3. I am making progress in a Third Act career as an actor. Your style tips have made me more confident in my look (jewelry, the cuffed sleeves, that Nordstrom moto jacket). I needed this, today, apparently. You’ve truly inspired me. I watch as I’m getting dressed and putting on my makeup in the morning. I always wear my signature, bold red lip. I’m so in agreement with you. I was already dressed in my jeans and three quarter sleeve t-shirt and then after watching, I decided I was going to change into a dress to run errands. Why not, my small town needs something to aspire to, too.
Thank you, Erin, for inspiring me.

yes!!! so many people (especially around where i live) seem to have given up on dressing themselves, especially during the pandemic. Never in my life have I seen so many people in sweats, workout clothes, and even straight-up PAJAMAS at the grocery store, etc. Not that I have anything against being comfortable or judging someone's situation - not at all - I don't know their story - maybe they ran to get baby formula or medicine because their child is sick at home - i don't know. But this reminded me that the other day I bought (at a thrift store) a jumpsuit, black with large, muted red rose print all over -i was showing it to my mom, as I was debating whether or not to keep it or return it, and we discussed when/where I could/would wear it. I said I liked this one since it's easy to dress up or down with accessories - she said it'd be great for a date night, I said I'd even run errands in it since it's quick and easy, and as comfy as PJ's so why not. Why not dress up to go to the grocery store - my dressy clothes are feeling neglected these past 2 years. we laughed. then I went to the store. :)

Erin, I have been watching your videos for about 4 months and though I have a fairly minimalist wardrobe at 57, you’ve inspired me to not just admire and wistfully gaze upon these “riskier” styles but I’m searching them out more frequently. I’ve always loved colour, unique styles and silhouettes but became more quiet, shall we say, as I’ve gotten older. We leave tomorrow for 6 weeks in Italy and a week in Belgium, I’m now determined to seek out the things I’ve been on the fence about and embrace the joy they can bring to me. Plus I have a husband who loves colour and unique styles and constantly pushes me to indulge and take risks. Thank you for your encouragement to step out of the comfort zone and have fun!!

Thank you for a great video. I'm 65 years old and just started to take more risks. I love clothes so much and putting outfits together. I just bought myself a really light weight, like gauze, pant that's navy with white stripes. They look a little like pj bottoms. I wasn't sure if I could pull that look off, but said what the heck. I love those pants so much. I wear them with my white blazer when going out and think it looks pretty good, if I say so myself. My 19 year old granddaughter told me I looked great the other night in that outfit, guess I'm doing something right. 😊 Keep up the great videos!!

I don’t think of myself as sophisticated but I just bought a dress from where I work that is black with faux leather puffy sleeves. When I tried it on I felt amazing and sophisticated so I bought it! Years ago I used to worry so much about what people thought 🙄 I distinctly remember being too worried about reactions to try new styles. So, in casual conversations, I would say comments like “I’ve been thinking of trying oversized sunglasses,” etc… After a bit I realized no one cared that much. Less than a week ago, I was at a large department store and was asked by a younger woman if the outfit she was wanting to try on (with leather embelishments) was too biker chic. She added that she was a mom, a speaker, and in her early fifties. I told her it was definitely not too biker chic. I also pointed out that when she is on her death bed, she will not be wishing she'd taken fewer fashion risks. That resonated for her. When we were in fitting rooms next to one another, she asked to show me how the outfit looked. It looked fabulous on her! I wear what (I think) looks good on me and what gives me joy. That varies from day to day, so I have a good selection of clothes. Do I look like other seventy-three-year-old women? Often not. But then, it heartens me to see that other women are loosening up a bit too. Cheers to taking a few fashion risks--even if they are calculated risks.

At 61, I'm realizing (finally?) that the "joy" piece of the fashion equation is the most important one. If I FEEL great in an outfit, that energy will shine through in my walk, my posture, my facial expression. It's a very exciting time for me!

Love this! the bold lip is so flattering especially on mature women with fair skin and hair. I never wore bright lips when I was younger. It was all about the nude lip and smokey eye but now I feel so much prettier in a bold lip because it really brightens the face and eyes and this red you are wearing has me really inspired to pull out my red lipstick again for fall.

Oh my gosh, I sooo agree!!! I am 69 yrs. old, have long hair and wear a headband at times. I also wear tube tops, combat boots, funky sunglasses (I have 10 pair), off shoulder tops, maxi, midi, and mini dresses and skirts! I have bought several pairs of prescription glasses in different styles and colors to add a little more punch to an outfit. I love fashion and experimenting with style….I am definitely not afraid to step out of the box! Great video and message!

Erin, I am so glad I found you on TH-cam. I love your attitude about fashion and just the way you communicate about how to be happiest. In my 20’s I was teaching and wearing professional clothing but also accessorized and always did hair and make up and the female teachers would always comment about me in a negative way.”Wow! You must have rich parents. Wow you have a lot of clothes.” “Why do you always have to dress so nice? This is a school.” To share a few. I was not rich. I kept clothes for years etc… but I continued to be who I was. Now, much older I dress down in order to fit in so there isn’t the judgment and animosity. But I watched your 2023 “Don’t” video and this one about taking risks and I am going to start playing with my wardrobe and having more fun. THANK YOU for the impact you have made in my life.❤

It's so hard to get past those comments. Especially from years of hearing it. I'm SO excited to hear that you are working on wearing the things you love though, taking those risks, and standing up for your style! You deserve to wear the things that you feel your best in. You shouldn't ever have to "dress down" for others. Thank you for sharing your story! Please know that you are not alone. xo

That was such an exciting topic. I don't have a problem with taking fashion risks but fit often gets in the way. I am short and busty so when I see some pieces that excite me I have to assess how they will fit on my shape and what alterations may be needed to get it to fit properly. And whether or not that will be too expensive or I can do it myself. It's taken a couple of decades to learn what will look flattering. When I get it right its a great feeling- and other people enjoy seeing it. People like to see color and I like wearing beautiful colors or patterns. By the way, fashion doesn't have to be expensive. Some of my favorites came from the new lines at Walmart.

Wow Erin! Thank you for sharing your background! Somehow just hearing your story and identifying in a small way made me appreciate you even more! I grew up in a small farming town in West Texas and felt inferior for so long when entering “fancy” stores! I started dressing on my own terms and still to this day(35 years later)dress independently! Your style is classic and impeccable and it fits YOU!! Anyway, thank you for your authenticity you go girl!!! ♥️♥️🤗🤗😊😊

Wow, you have totally inspired me! I am 62 now but have always loved fashion. Before having a family I happily created and sewed amazing outfits and didn't worry about people's opinions.
I am going to go for it again!
    If not now, when?
We can get so caught up in other people's ecpectations that we lose our own sense of style and that never feels right.
We find confidence when we are true to ourselves.
    Love you💗

This video was so inspiring. After watching it, I realized that over the years I’ve taken fewer risks because I didn’t like the extra attention when I did try something different. It could be someone giving me that “ look” or a well intentioned ( or not) friend making a comment. I’ve just turned 60, and realize it’s about time to not give a heck what anyone else says as long as it brings me joy. Thanks Erin!

My “just do it” has been wigs. I’m 53 and my hair has gotten very thin and old looking. I feel young, vibrant, and relevant, and I want to look how I feel, so I wear wigs. I never have a bad hair day. They’re yet another accessory for my outfits (wearing a green dress today? Let’s go with the red asymmetrical bob!)

Erin, I love your looks while in Spain! It is cool how living in Europe for a period of time can motivate and influence our style. I think it depends on what country we lived in also. Thank you for sharing all of these great tips. I started wearing bright lips about two years ago based on you and Ali Andreea (a makeup artist) I enjoy watching as well. I flipped a switch on my wardrobe, my hair and my mindset around that time too. I donated and gifted all the things that didn't make me happy anymore. I invested in pieces that gave me joy & make me smile. I DONT CARE IF I get stares , I love how I feel when I wear what I do and its for me, no one else. Thank you for sharing your stories with us, they resonated with me. This is nuts, but as I read other reviews... I am in good company, I also am in my mid 50's (just had to share that) LOVING My 50's! My husband encourages me to rock whatever makes me feel good and that support is also a game changer. Thank you again for inspiring me in all your fun and educational videos.

Amazing content. I appreciate your candid vulnerability and sharing your background (I grew up poor, with 4 siblings, and am myself a single mom). I can relate to Imposter Syndrome/experiences of classism as a young adult. Thanks for reminding us that in our 40s we are in this process of reconnecting with that joyful little girl who loves clothes and dressing up and being confident in what makes us happy and authentic. FYI I wear headbands at 47 too.

By far the best fashion vid I have ever seen, and you're right - I've never heard anyone say these things before. Most fashion advice tries to label and put people in a box or category. You speak to the little voice inside that says 'no, you mustn't.' Thank you, thank you for giving us relatable, visual examples and the permission to hope...and to dare.

Thanks for the pep talk! I lost 60 pounds in the last year and it has been a real process to become comfortable with my new size. When I was in my skinny 20's I was really into fashion. I bought a silk rope belt in NYC that had two animal fur tails on the ends. It was the finishing touch on a great outfit. Once, when wearing it, a child noticed it, picked up the tail and started singing "Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier." I thought it was hysterically funny, but it didn't stop me from wearing it.
But being overweight killed my sense of style. Thanks for reminding me how much fun fashion can be, no matter what our shape may be!

Hi Erin! This video really spoke to me. I am 74 years old, and am just now ready to take risks! If not now, when? I appreciate your honesty, and the steps you took to discover your style. I kept a notebook at one point with pictures I cut out of catalogues and magazines of outfits I admired. I then tried to recreate them.
