Jess Yeldon Caroline talks about it here but if she does not, Hot&Flashy has a great tutorial. She helped me a great deal when I was ready to throw in the towel because my face looked like it aged versed improved. I have been on Refissa for over three years and it has been amazing! I will say this, Caroline talks about her use of squalane. I used this every morning through the first year and it helped so much with hydration and rolling away peeling skin. I would massage my face with it before heading to the gym and wash it once I got home. I also found the use of good hydraulic acid before application helped a great deal provided you have a humidifier on overnight (depending on your climate, I live near IL). Good luck.

Absolutely brilliant, I don’t know you personally Caroline but really admire the fact that you bridge the massive gap in educating us all, free of charge, taking out all the crap that we can sometimes fall for. Oh and “look a squirrel” you had me at that 😂 , so funny. Retinol is a mine field and I can feel that this and the follow ons will really be educational once and for all. Thank you x

Another very informative video. I'm 59 and never felt the need to jump on the retin a train. My skin gets irritated quite easily so I can imagine what it would do with retin a! I plug along with my drugstore brands because that's what I can afford, and I think I look pretty good. Good luck to all of you on your retinol journeys! Love your top, Caroline!!! Thanks for another great video.

I am 34 and the video made me panic a little. What, I should have been using retinol for 6 years already?😂 On the other hand, I am like you, with sensitive (but good,) skin so for now it is fine without retinol. Maybe some of us can survive without 😊

At the ripe young age of 46 (and a cult-like follower/Skin Freak..what can I say...I have a skin care addiction..at least I can admit it--which makes it ok, right!), I have re-winded and watched over and over! I am beyond excited, in desperate need of (and beyond grateful for) this video and anything upcoming on this topic, especially coming from you, Caroline! I need to bump up, as I currently use Pestle & Mortar Superstar and even though I work in medicine..my dumba$# didn't even think about the oil being less absorbed than the creams...no wonder I feel stuck! Mahalo! Mahalo! Mahalo! XO Aloha!

I had an awful pregnancy mask (melasma) all over my face, 5 shades darker. Immediately after my delivery. I cleansed with la roche posay effaclar then p50w, estee Lauder advanced night repair, clinic moisture surge intense, 0.5 tretinoin 3 times a week. My face complexion was back to normal after 3 weeks! Now am down to using that regimen twice a week instead of 3 because it's making me my complexion lighter than my natural. The spf I use is the body shop skin defense. Absolutely fab for women of color.

Thought about sharing my experience because oh, was this video just what I would've needed a month ago. Previously had a marvelous experience with the Ordinary retinols, but this time something went awfully wrong and here I am, weeks later, with dry, painfully itchy patches that refuse to heal around my nose and near my eyes. Thankfully oinments have somewhat helped but it's still not over. Not saying it was the products fault by any means - as Caroline was saying, do not apply it near the nose and eye areas. Listen to this woman, ladies and gents!!!

A good way to not get it on the wrong areas is to put a smidge of ointment or Vaseline on those areas (corners of eyes, mouth, etc). It acts like a barrier with the retinol.

Yasss, Caroline. Great video. As a NP, I concur with stopping or minimum use of acids with the use of Rx Retin A. It’s just too much and you are going to disrupt your skin barrier. The only acid I use is my Vitamin C in the am. And, occasionally a salicylic toner in the am. No glycolic while on Retin A - too disruptive to the skin barrier.

Would you recommend 3-4 months (in the winter maybe)with a stronger one, and then the rest of the year with a milder one (like Pixi retinol tonic? I’m at the same level as you, started 1% retirides ...applied once per week for 5weeks, and now am going to push it to 2x per week....good to go slow. I wash face and pat dry, apply Cerave pm moisturiser and then apply the vitamin a 45mins later and that’s it...I do take it down my neck and whatever is very slightly left on my fingers i pat it around my eyes but I defo try and avoid the nasal area. I see the flakes on 3rd day and then I nurse my skin back to health with hydrating products before my next application of vit a. It’s not an easy journey but I’ve given myself a year so by the end of this year if I can get to even 3x per week I will be so happy. Slow is the key and also listening to your skin...if there’s too much irritation I will of course cut back rather than carrying on. In the meantime I’ve decided to hold on my acids(p50, salicylic) to avoid burns and unnecessary extra exfoliation which i need to avoid at present as the vit a will do enough of this for me. Looks like we have started the journey at the same time, good luck with it, from 🇬🇧 too x
If anyone’s interested in products I use:-
Cerave hydrating cleanser OR Osmosis deep or the gentle cleanser
    Cerave pm facial moisturiser
    Dhc coq10 lotion
    Timeless matrixyl Synthe’6 serum
Hada labo hyaluronic acid, to be applied after serums and before moisturiser NOT directly on skin after cleansing
La Roche posey anthelios xl spf
Rescue kit products:- dr.jart ceramidin cream. La Roche posey cicaplast Baume b5
(No vitamin c serum, I think it’s waste of money, does nothing for me)

But in the end of the day is just like other skin care product it doesn't work for everyone.

I always thought the retinols are supposed to be after washing the face and before moisturizing.

    • @luxy1193
      @luxy1193 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Tracy yes correct, but I’m using retinoic acid otherwise known as retin a, this is what Caroline will mention later on in her videos as being the ‘prescribed’ stuff,, and because it’s very strong the instructed way to use this is after the skin is completely dry hence why I wait 45mins after cleansing....using a moisturiser before helps lessen the flaking and irritation while I’m getting my skin used to this very slowly. Hope this makes sense. See below I have done a little breakdown on the different derivatives of retinoic acid and how many conversions it takes for each derivative to reach retinoic acid. Hope this helps to understand retin a abit better. I’m no professional I just did my own research on the Internet before I started on this journey. X
Retinoic Acid- the purest vitamin A form (aka tretinoin, retin a)
Retinoic acids most popular derivatives are - retinols and retinyl palmitates
New up and coming derivative is Retinaldehyde (aka retinal)
Difference between retinol, retinyl palmitate and retinaldehyde is the amount of conversion that your body and your skin takes to get to the retinoic acid(retin a, purest form)
Retinyl palmitate - takes 3 conversions to convert to Retinoic acid
      Example,.
Palmitate > retinol > retinaldehyde > Retinoic acid
Retinyl > retinaldehyde > Retinoic acid
      retinaldehyde > Retinoic acid

I'm 47 and I Have been using prescription strength for a few years now, refilled my script last week, I'm hitting it from today, end of summer, here in Australia. I know it's best to use it all year round, I can't keep out of the Aussie sun completely tho, so, I give it a break between Xmas and march. It's a dual purpose product for me as I have textured skin areas from years of acne, plus there's the anti aging benefit. The doctor said to me last week when I went in for a script, its apparently anti aging as well you know? I played dumb, saying, really?

Just started using the Skinsense Retinol Serum (0.3%) which is QVC’s beauty pick of the month. I have a dry, sensitive skin, aged 50 and new to retinol. So far have used it every night all over face, neck, decollage and after 20 mins put on an oil or moisturiser. No bad reaction but skin is looking more plump and even. Quite happy with this product so far.

Would love if you would give a guide to where to start, how long to use each product and how often, and what next. Kind of like a map. Not much to ask, lol! Thanks for the info, great stuff! I’m 32 and I’ve been using Retin A 5% for about a year. I think I’m going to see about switching to the 1% soon. I get it from the VA where I was in the military. I used to buy it online (I know, totally illegal) but if you were in the military and go to the VA, ask your doctor to prescribe it to you. I get the really big 45 gram tubes and they last forever! And they send them to me constantly and it’s free! I still have like 6 bottles I’ve never opened. Prescription Retin A can be really expensive with copays and insurance sometimes. So anyone’s who goes to the VA should check that out.

I’ve only recently “discovered” you 😂
And your post are so informative! Love them.
I’m just getting into Tretinoin. I’ve wanted to for ages but have been a bit petrified. So I used retinol for two years - I’ve been on retinol 1% for a year now- after starting on lower strengths. And that’s allowed me to make a smooth transition to the 0.025% which I’ve used daily for five weeks. My mom lives in Spain and it’s over the counter luckily. I’ve been really careful and I’ve not peeled at all. The most is a small amount of dryness on days 7 to 14 !
I’ve sworn by decleor comfort mask though - I stick it on every morning while I’m doing my teens Sons their brekkie and leave it on till I shower ! I also have switched to Cephacil face wash. A bland moisturiser and of course spf 50.
Sorry - here’s the question after boring you to tears no doubt !
Will 0.025 % be enough to stick with forever ? Or must I step up to 0.05 ? For the big guns results ? Or even 0.1 ??
    Thank you xxx

You seem to rotate in and out of prescription strength retinols. Can you decribe your cycle? (if that makes any sense) I.e. at what point do you decide to start back on one and how long do you stay on it for/at what point do you decide your skin has had enough time on it?

I think if possible you should include Tazorac. It comes in a cream and gel. I am 57 and that is what I use. It is considered the strongest prescription, however I tried all retin a, differin, and various other prescriptions with no luck. They made my skin angry and reactive. I developed cystic acne in my 40’s and Tazorac was the only thing I could use. I recently decided to go off it and tried and reacted to some supposedly gentle brands like Drunk Elephant and Sunday Riley. Love Tazorac.

They gifted me a sample of the product that I haven’t tried yet. Twenty odd years ago I was prescribed Retin A for acne and what I mainly remember is red, peeling skin - not fun. In the end I used Accutane which worked beautifully for me.

I am 23 and I use a mild retinoid - not for the wrinkles but it helps my skin deal with inflammation and post-breakout healing (my skin is very bad at 'healing', not just on my face but on my entire body. If I cut myself, the cut takes months to heal properly).

In the states prescription Retin A is also used for acne treatment. My daughter is on it and she’s in college. She’s under her dermatologists care and I’d rather she be on vitamin A then Roacutane. Don’t care for the potential side effects IMO. Just thought I’d share some information my dermatologist gave me in using my prescription. Start slowly then build frequency also when applying he says it’s alright to wait 1 minute and then apply moisturizer as it has been absorbed. Over time go longer before applying moisturizer. Basically if needed build up for the waiting period as you do frequency of use. Hope this is helpful 😊another great informational video🙏🏼
