      THIS IS COMPLETE GARBAGE!!
      I double click on the folderlock, but instead of getting a "Private" folder, I get a Pop-Up window telling me I need to take my PC out of S MODE!!
      Maybe you should explain how to work around that, Hmm!!!! 👎

    The 2 setting changes you made for Folders can be made just by checking the box on the View menu. You don't need to drill down into Folder Settings as you did. However, there's another item in Folder Settings that would probably allow the folder to be visible. If you allow the viewing of Hidden items AND allow the viewing of System items, the folder will likely show since it was given both the H and S attributes by the batch file.

    • @culea0alex
      @culea0alex ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, I alway allow viewing the hidden files but not the system files (opereting system files) and I can still see the "password protected" folder. So this doesn't work for me.

    Yes, this works when using Windows File Explorer but not with Total Commander (an alternative file viewer). The file is still visible but the name changes from 'Private' to 'Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}' which is part of the .bat file and so not only is this folder visible but so are the contents.

    @jonesgang ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You can prevent access to that file through permissions, attributes and security. But you would have to lock the bat file after you have created the password and not before. Word of caution. Messing around with permissions, attributes and security can brick the os.

    • @jonesgang
      @jonesgang ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Taylor That is where you need to change security settings to one user and not everyone. If you set your computer to be used by multiple people and they all use the same login then nothing you do will ever secure that file. But if you have separate logins then they would not be able to change the security setting for that one file. Multiple people with one login is beyond stupid, and so is granting everyone admin rights. But you are right about some people should not have access to a computer if they do not know what they are doing.

    • @jonesgang
      @jonesgang ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Taylor You are completely right about this method and I laughed at the beginning of the video about how unsecure it is. But with modifications it can be safe from most people. Most people are computer literate, they know just enough to do what they need to do and fix common basic problems. But they know very little about the HOW and WHY. So for those people it is pretty secure. For those that do know a lot more than the average person it is not safe in any way shape or form. This would be more like a coding learning exercise than anything else.
      Like you I have been at it for 30+ years. I got the computer bug back in 81. ColecoVision and arcade games were cool and fun. But writing your own games and programing them is where the real fun began. That opened a lot of doors...

    If you know even one file name or part of a file name of any file in that private folder, a search utility such as Search Everything, can easily find the file and allow you to open up that hidden folder with ease, no password needed. Password protection using this method might be a somewhat secure means to keep prying eyes of non savvy family members out of your folders.

    So what the batch file looks like it's doing to me is hiding it in the windows registry? I've got a sneaky feeling if you booted into any Linux system you'd be able to access the folder without a password. And as you stated, it's only a matter of opening the batch file to see the password. I'd create the hidden folder under the users data directory (like user/documents etc), as unless you've got admin rights, you can't view other users folders (if it's a shared computer).
    I think a better way would be using TrueCrypt/VeraCrypt. That would be consistent and secure regardless of which OS you were using and doesn't rely on a Windows registry. Just don't EVER forget your password and backup your key.

    Interesting little script. You could turn the bat file into an exe file thereby preventing someone seeing the contents easily.

      Reinstall the operating system, use another computer and a usb drive download OS from internet, take it to that computer, reinstall.

    And what would happen if anybody right click on the .bat file and choses edit then can see or change the password?Never mind I was too quick to post, you mentioned in the end so my early suspictions were right. I'm either smarter or more malicious than i think

    What will happen to the hidden folder if the bat file is deleted?

  • @borisboris5195
    @borisboris5195 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok ... not to sound negative, but ... the protection provided is very weak, because it depends on/stores the password in a .BAT file, which very obviously advertises the fact that it is FileLock related. Also, the mechanism appears to be dependent on visibility attributes, meaning anybody like myself, who always shows hidden/system files, as well as some using Explorer alternatives to navigate files, will easily be able to see/access/alter the content of the folder. Meaning, if you loose your laptop, anybody with a fairly low level of computer knowledge, can easily access your data.

    Please can you tell me do I need to put in a licence key if I want to reinstall Windows10 Pro OEM_DMchannel, licenced, if I do it from system menu on my Toshiba laptop, not from pendrive ?? Unfortunately I lost a licence key. I remember you uploaded a video in the past showing how to clean the system of everything, viruses , etc , using ( if I remember ) command prompt. Where can I find that video ? Thank you :-)

      OEM keys are tired to the hardware, it should auto active after you reinstall Windows

    I have a pword protected folder I created in the same manner. Only there's a catch. If you right click on .bat folder and hit "edit", you will see the password you created. So anyone with admin privileges can still access the "private" folder.

      @Brite09 addresses that in the video, and recommends moving the bat file to another location. I deleted mine altogether, and then hid the text as a "safenote" in my password keeper software.

    This is not a safe option, anyone who knows how to password protect the folder using this method can easily delete that bat file and create another bat file with their own password which will show the hidden folder using a completely different password. Also security wise, no one should be able to delete the folder or the bat file without having to enter the password!
