  • Taking a good look at a rare bit of RC vintage racing history. The Team Associated RC10 Gold Pan changed RC racing forever but Team Tekin wanted to make it even better. In 1993 this option chassis conversion kit was released to the public with some radical design ideas that people just hadn't seen before. In this video, we will take a look at a vintage example and all the features that made this something a bit special. Possibly the second mid-motor 2WD buggy ever designed after the 1986 MRP 110.
A massive thank you to Kevin Tarrant for gifting this vintage RC racing time capsule to go into the RCKicks collection.

Whoa LOL! I had KO PRO radio that came with I think, one of those servos and a KO Rx. The Tx had a hole shot button. I had a Kyosho car set up as a dirt oval racer. I remember those green steering rack arms and yeah went to bearings instead of bushings. I think those arms were also sold by Buds. My car was a very used Optima, there was a machinist in the engine shop at Continental Airlines Denver that was making Custom Works parts for the chain drive Dominators and I used one of his 7075-T6 motor mount/sprocket setups, Hi tech! That car went through a bunch of mods. Also had a Novak T4 esc. Man this R/C 10 you got there is a real time capsule. Thank You to the Gentleman that donated it. I didn't know Tekin made a whole conversation kit for anything. I thought they just did electronics. That rear arm setup, the rear geometry is "interesting". I noticed recently there is an upgrade or a newer drift car kit using that same thing on the rear suspension. To see that on a 30 year old
R/C 10. Gavin I really think there needs to be a much closer "tech inspection" done on this car. Please tell us your going to run it. Indoor off-road carpet track? This video is a multiple watch, freeze frame, episode for me, interesting tech in that car.

From what I remember, mid motor cars didn't work too well on low grip tracks, as the kick of a brushed motor on acceleration, made the rear lift & lose grip.
It started to work when XFactory went for a 4 gear, gearbox, which used the motor kick to push down on the rear wheel, adding grip.

I’d definitely leave it as it is, it’s only like that once, great history to it as well. Funny, I wondered how long it would be before this would pop up again. This was for sale on eBay sort of mid last year, know one seemed to know what it was as it was listed for a while and I very very nearly bought it but couldn’t justify the outlay for it at the time. Eventually it was withdraw from sale. So it’s great to see it again and get a closer look at it. A wicked RC10 enjoy it. Also good to see the Parma eagle body on it.

That was a popular 'alternate' rc10 body back in the day. I never liked it as much as the original and ironically its currently in the best condition of all my vintage bodies probably because I didnt run it much. My original rc10 bodies are all beat to trash unfortunately.
I'd sure be nice to get an original body and a stealth tranny for my old 'cadillac' edition. The six gear trans in mine is quite janky now and really is the original car's only real weakness. (Though mine has lasted over thirty years and was raced to hell back in the eighties.) So, maybe not.
    Cheers

Hi Gavin, I have never seen this kit before. I have seen the yellow steering parts before. The yellow parts are made by A&L and probably did not come with chassis kit. Also I could not see in your video very clearly, but it looked like the front A-arms might be made by "Andy's". Thoughts?

its pronouced K.O. propo. Fet servos were all the rage back in the day to boost performance. Now a days nearly every reasonable steering servo does under 0.06s transit time..lol

Very cool but strange since even '93 tracks were pretty loamy and rear-motor was the way to go for many more years. Maybe just a pet project or something put together for a very specific type of racing.

  • @danielwooster5063

The Tekin conversion was never particularly popular bitd (guessing the types of tracks raced on were not really suitable - especially in the US!) & not massively coverted these day amongst the RC10 collectors fraternity - thats not to say that it isn't very cool (look out also for the Fabix-mid motor converstion for the Cougar 2000, which appeared a little bit later) I remember someone with a good few of the kits NIB selling them for a very reasonble price about ten years back & they weren't exactly all 'snapped-up'! Why - I don't know? I remember a prominent RC collector running a Tekin mid at one of the early Revival meetings - its superior steering was certainly evident when it was dry.... but suddenly became un-driveable in the finals when it rained! Other nice parts on this car are the A&L ballraced steering levers - which might be still available under the 'Factory Works' banner (Jeff Malar from RC10talk bought the rights from the original owner) The Andy's front arms are especially desirable since they were made available prior to the release of the RC10 CE as a wide track conversion for the original #6010 - so are a legitimate upgrade for fitting to a 6-gear gold pan being raced in the earlier vintage class & do make the RC10 a better car to drive. The K.O PS-713 was one of their more entry level servos from the japanese brand, still weren't particularly cheap & very decent. It is plastic geared (I have a spare gear set for this servo) So good that you have a saver fitted! Servo probably a bit on the newer side to be truely period correct. Amazed the Novak ESC has allowed itself to be stuck to the chassis lol! The 410HPc is one of the classic Novaks..... as used by Masami in his 93 Worlds cars.

The electrics are real hodgepodge. That the motor is not anywhere close to period correct. That’s a mid 2000s motor not a mid 90s something more like a slot machine or green machine would be more appropriate. Same for the servo. Mid 2000s piece. Late 80s on the Tekin receiver. The ESC is of that age so perhaps make a set around that before you display it.
Ah yes get those modern wheels and tires off there for something period correct.
