- There are a lot of essential RV accessories but one that I think is not your typical but definitely, a necessity is a properly sized jack to do maintenance and repairs on your RV. We found a great bottle jack that has worked very well for our size of a 5th wheel and the Safe Jack accessories made it easier, more functional and feels safer to use. The funny thing about an RV accessory like this is it may be overlooked or not thought of until you have to do a roadside repair. Here is the Jack we have.

This looks risky even on a solid flat surface. I can only imagine the instability on other surfaces. I always use blocks under the jack to reach my starting lift point. MUCH more stable.

Safe Jack has a stability base not shown in this video. There are also a flat (frame) and a U shaped (axle) top plates not shown, so no need for the blocking, or worries about the jack slipping.
I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn’t crawl under any vehicle that is just supported with a bottle jack. I’d at least add added support in case the RV moved and kicked out the jack.

Just came across your channel. Using all those extensions with that jack may work with no issues on a hard flat surface. Using the configuration you showed in this video on an uneven surface or ground could very possibly spell disaster for someone.
There is no way that either you or the manufacturer or anyone else is going to convince me that adding an 18 inch extension to the top of a bottle jack which already has a small footprint is a good idea. I bet I could push sideways on an RV jacked up with that extension and it would fall over, and don't even try it unless you're nearly perfect level and every wheel still on the ground is chocked and the rig should be hooked to the truck also. You have some good videos and good ideas, and maybe this one, in the right hands of a skilled individual with good mechanical knowledge could be used in an emergency, but for the average RVer out there on the road today that can hardly operate a pair of vise grips, should not be using this.
I agree. There’s a reason why house movers and riggers stack up timbers, it’s much more stable. I always carry a few pieces of 3x8 and 4x4 hardwood just in case.

This is a very dangerous thing. The longer it gets, the less stable it is. Use a proper jack for that function!! Omg
Had to use truck factory jack to change a flat tire on trailer. Make sure to carry 4x4s and 2x4s and it raised the wheel easily to change out. Going to need blocks if you have any soft surface to use jack otherwise it will sink out of site.

You should put something on top of jack to spread out the jack force over a wider area of the frame. So you do not bend the frame of the RV.

After going all summer with just an 8,000 BTU portable a/c in our fifthwheel in Florida, an electrician wired up our new Atwood Air Command 15,000 BTU with heat pump, air distribution panel, new thermostat and remote (model 15028).
Last night we slept comfortably cool for the first time in months.
While eTrailer absolutely mislead us about two important things, it's finally installed and working.
For any of you shopping a/c's at eTrailer, be aware that there is no owners manual with this model, and Dometic, which bought Atwood, doesn't have a manual for it either. (We did get the service manual, which helped the electrician.)
eTrailer had told me it was a "plug and play" replacement for our old Dometic Duo-Therm Quick Cool, and it certainly wasn't. Bare wires on both the new a/c end (save the plug for the new thermostat) and coming from our coach, so we had to hire an electrician. Finding one who would come out to us and work on an RV was not easy (only 2 out of the 15 I called), but he turned out to be an RVer himself who re-habs and flips older RVs on the side.
All is well now and we are happily cool as cucumbers!

That's a nice addition to a tool kit! I make a pad that consists of two pieces of pressure treated 4x6 7 inches long sitting side by side to make a 7 inch square block. I lag screw them together and I screw 1/2 inch pressure treated plywood to the top and bottom making them 4 1/2 thick. They work great under the levelers and under a Jack for maintenance or repair. They are a must for loose gravel or hot asphalt. I drill two holes in one block and thread some rope into them for handles.
What if the trailer is not level and it is on uneven road surface. I would not use bottle jack on a filth wheel camper ever unless you have death wish.
Great gadget for the bottle jack. We have a 2021 Rockwood 2205s We travel with a Big Red 12 ton bottle jack and two aluminum 3 ton jack stands. I like the idea of the extensions and may have to give them a try!

Although it is not the easiest thing to carry around, I always bring my hi-lift automotive floor jack with me. That way, if I ever have a problem on the road, I can not only take care of it safely, but quickly as well. It usually goes in the bed of my truck, next to the hitch. It has gotten me out of a few jams over the years...
I have had trouble greasing my shackles. When you said taking the pressure off the leaf springs made it easier to grease the axle you caught my attention. I ended up buying the Milwaukee battery powered grease gun to get the grease in. That worked could you elaborate a bit on the mechanics of your procedure.
Yes, I have the same question. Must the weight be taken off the suspension to grease the wet bolts?
To take just a tire off or do work on the bearings/brakes I use a tire aid as long has it hooked to the tow vehicle. Always try a tire aid before you go camping it may not be high enough so a board or two should help. I also carry a bottle jack and use 4x4’s under the jack.

I believe larger 5th wheels should have shock absorbers. Sure saves the trailer and stability. What is your feelings on this?
I have a triple axle 20,000lb GVWR toy hauler and the suspension is grossly inadequate. There's upgrades available now from the factor when you buy a new 5th wheel but unfortunately for me eventually I'll have to rebuild the entire suspension and braking system. These manufactures go with the cheapest possible option to maximize profits.
@@cruisinguy6024 thanks for reply. I had a 36’ 2011 Greystone (Heartland) trailing from BC to Arizona every winter. The end cap actually was coming off. Out of warrantee, I had to remount it with glue & more screws, sold it. I bought a Canadian made 2006 triple E Topaz with factory shocks, very well built. It’s my 5th wheel, I now know what not to buy. Many of my personal beliefs on 5th wheels, are confirmed by your videos. I have enjoyed watching your videos , always learn something. Brian Reese
RVs that have the torsion axels under them have to be able to jack on frame even to change a tire. It can damage components jacking on axel. So some way to reach frame is crucial.

The higher you put bottle jack out, the more unstable it is. Use blocks and raise bottle jack up. If you put weight on bottle up (RV 12000 pds) and it moves off canter or on angle, it will shoot out of there like a bullet. Injury or death is possible if hit with it!
Man I bought one of these from Walmart it’s tipped over and all that fluid inside spilled out. sucked. Haven’t replaced it yet.
Be safe out there. I get worried when people use a Long Neck Bottle (HAHA Pun INtended) Jack. It can slip very easily. I know that you are very aware of this and cautious when in operation but people need to know the safety implications. Good job here though.

I don’t understand why you use a 10 ton jack but only a 6 ton jack comes in the kit…please clarify...how do I know the extensions will fit my 10t jack?
hi…just thought i’d mention in your list of jacks etc, you put the wrong word for the collar…you mistakenly put caller…..a screw caller could mean a whole different thing…lol…..
That looks like a horribly bad idea, I'm an engineer and if I can't accomplish what I need in the stroke length of the jack, I just don't do it. Nothing is worse than jacking something up and the whole thing "leaning" off of the jack. bad idea. I have the Torin "Big Red" 10 ton hydraulic bottle jack to replace the Ford branded one that stopped working a while ago, meaning to rebuild that one...

I know this sounds stupid but that's how most accidents happen. I had gotten my middle finger pinned under one of the wheels of my 5th wheel and the lci leveling system was in error mode so my wife could not figure out how to clear the error and lift the weight off my finger. It was my camping neighbor who had a bottle jack handy that saved my finger. I'm buying this bottle jack and put it in the rv cargo bay
I prefer a block under the jack, you know why. A wide base block give much more foundation so you dont have a thin straight up jack that will probably fall over. Sorry to disagree but I have done there many times. Do not be dangerous and gave a straight up toothpick that will fall over and hurt you. you will probably have a dirt, gravel, or uneven ground to put your jack on BAD IDEA
While looking for the link for this product I can across this other product that seems would be more stable. Does anyone else have experience with this type?
The only thing I would add is a flat plate at the top to spread out the load on the frame being lifted. This supports the side walls of the frame.

Hmmm... I would much rather use a wide base of blocks UNDER the bottle jack - it just feels like it would be more stable
Yes on soft ground I will toss a small block of wood under the Jack that will help with the Jack stability but the ram extensions feel more solid from when I have used multiple bricks and wood blocks to get it high enough.

Question why not just lift the trailer from the axle to get the tire off the ground to change it using a bottle jake ?
We have a 12 ton Safe Jack kit with the stability base for our 5th wheel. The extensions save a lot of time and effort and negate the need for excessive blocking. I wouldn’t leave home without it!

Have you seen the Bottle Jack Buddy? It's a 100% USA made axle saddle that fits right on a bottle jack. It's powder coated, very compact and allows the RVr to jack up right on the side of the road. I don't go anywhere with out my Bottle Jack Buddy...It's like $60 bucks and gets things done safely and quickly.

Amazing information. I was stuck because the Andersen block didn’t bring the 5th wheel high enough. I needed another 1 inch and I didn’t have a bottle jack. It was 112 degrees.

People seem to forget you should never get under a vehicle on a jack. Jacks have been known to fail. It should be on stands with enough capacity to hold the vehicle. Changing a tire without getting under the vehicle is less risk but still not without risk. When that 30 foot long monster jumps sideways you may come up squished. Pulling prying and twisting on a vehicle is an invitation to tip over a jack with a small footprint. Do us a favor stay alive.

Usually I put my little floor jack in the truck. While I was watching this I was like wait a minute I have a bottle jack in the garage. I am just going to leave that in my truck now since it is smaller.

Personally I would Cary wood blocks.
With a little metal work you can also turn that Jack into a wood splitter and a jack, a bit slow but it works.
Never, ever rely solely on hydraulics to trust that you will not be crushed. After jacking, a pinned jack stand needs to be added before trusting life or limb.

I would add that a LOT of travel trailers do NOT have leveling jacks, only stabilizers, and that a lot of trailers have torsion axles, not leaf springs. That being said, I do agree that you should travel with a jack that can lift your trailer from the frame. We carry a floor jack and jack stands.
I have heard to never jack up a trailer by the axles and to only lift from the frame but what should someone do if they have an LP pipe running down the entire passenger side of the trailer? I have and anderson trailer aid for tires but in the instance I would need to take the load off the suspension I'm at a loss of what to do about that.

for the money they want for the kit and or the extensions I would rather keep a block to put under the jack, Rip off!
Good idea. I bought two 6 ton models these last year so I could do a two point lift .One in front of the axels and one behind.. or for what’re way it seems best for a particular job. it’s less stress on the frame or rig to lift from two points.. I also bought two stands to transfer weight off the jack if need be to be safer and more solid… the more the merrier… ha.

Grrr! It was just 2 days ago that I made the 75 mile drive to where I store my 5th wheel only to discover that my high-lift floor jack won't lift high enough to get my trailer's tires off the ground. So much for giving the trailer its first wheel bearing service. I made the 75 mile drive back home wondering how I was going to safely do the work.

Ive had to change a tire on a flatbed with a truck on it. I had two jacks, but it would have been beneficial to have had the extentions. I had to get the frame up high enough to fit the bottle jack under it. A friend helped out trying to come up with the best configuration to be able to swap the tire. Planning ahead

Thanks for the suggestion! I will be ordering some! I have had to use my bottle Jack to get my fifth wheel back on my truck after the motor started to fail and wouldnt lift the front of the trailer.
I thought I have heard that lifting your rv up by the frame was not recommended or to be done at all.

Just ordered the kit. I watched this video a few months ago and balked at the price. I recently jacked up my truck and then the trailer, wished I had just ordered the kit to make the job safer and faster. I did buy the kit after hearing you say "I wished I had bought the kit" instead of piecemealing it together. Done Bruddda. T wallet hurts but I know I will be safer the next time I jack anything up. What an awesome device, thanks for sharing it! I've had to change multiple flats and do other suspension work on my triple axle Grand Design Momentum and it's always a pain. I think this will greatly simplify the process for me going forward!
Have you ever considered mounting the bikes on the front of your truck? We just bought an F150 to tow our trailer and have two e-bikes the are 75 lbs each. I'm trying to find an easier way to move them about.
Saw your comment as I was learning about bottle jacks.... I have a Ram 1500 and 2 65lb ebikes. Installed a front hitch and use a dual dirt bike carrier to transport. I cut the support beam on the carrier to allow the load to be as close to the front of the truck as possible. Also, my state, Indiana. has a 48 inch limit on how far in front a load can be carried. Etrailer has the hitches. PS- There are other "ebike carriers" that advertise as sufficient and rated to carry heavy bikes but they looked marginal in. my opinion. So we hook up the 27' TT, load 2 light kayaks on truck bed racks, and hang the ebikes off the front. Looks a little hillbilly, but is within the limits of the truck. The front load does block the headlights a little, but we are daytime RV travelers anyway.
So the kit for $319, but if you don't mind using a brick, $34+... how much do bricks cost these days?
I know their prices are steep but as full timers I can’t travel with a handful of bricks. Not a bad plan at home though.

Yeah, that's what I did. I already had a couple house jacks (from jacking up houses while working on them long before going fulltime in the RV.) They aren't very expensive and you can get a couple 20 ton for not much and have it with you for things you had no idea would happen when you got it for it's initial purpose.
