They arent just surviving on the remakes, they're thriving on them. The beauty and the beast remake is one of the highest grossing films of all time. They don't have to try unless everyone just stops supporting Disney in the next few months. Disney hasn't necessarily stopped trying, and they've still put out some great movies during the last decade (mainly in the form of the MCU and the stuff that WDAS put out) but this is more out of choice than obligation.
As someone who wants to be an artist as well as animator but don’t have the confidence that I can be great. There’s two quotes in this movie that made me increase my self-esteem “You must be imaginative, strong-hearted, you must try things that may not work but you not must not let anyone define your limits of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul” “Not everyone can be a great artist but a great artist can come from anywhere”
I'm an artist myself. And I gotta say, Gusteau is RIGHT. In my opinion, the art, animation, and film industry relies on too much of the familiar, and is very unkind to new talent. Take it from me, I tried to be an animator, and I got out before it was too late. It's better to learn, and grow by acting on your own volition. Of course, know how to take criticism and never feel bad about being new or inexperienced. That's far worse than letting someone telling you you can't achieve it.
@@LeftytheGansterGremlin It makes me wish that if there was a faithful Sonic adaptation, it would go more of an origin that has Sonic born on Christmas Island, mastered different moves, inherit his plane from his father, live with an Owl who continues to teach him to defend the Planet Mobius/Earth from evildoers, Eggman becomes a villain due to the combined efforts of GUN declining his unethical robotics and his encounter with Sonic back on Christmas Island, Sonic destroys his robotic badniks, collects the Chaos Emeralds along the way, Sonic takes a ride on Robotnik's Blimp to Scrap Brain, and defeats Eggman for the first time, while restoring South Island to its former glory. For now, the Sequel balanced things out.
I've always wanted to become an animator and artist (especially in drawing manga and webtoons) but because of my low self esteem giving up just seems to be the best choice but up until now the movie and its quotes still stuck on to me which is my everyday motivation even tho i still suck at it lmao

I always loved the movie more than the other pixar movies and I could never put it into words but the answer even after this video was quite simple. It was because this movie was full of humanity and I really hate that it has become a trend for stories to go full cynical and nihilistic without hope
@@jamesgreen90 That would be my favorite Pixar movie if it were Pixar, but as pointed out it is Dreamworks. Also I am not sure I am a fair judge of How to Train Your dragon's quality because it has dragons in it and if a movie promises me a Dragon and delivers that is already A+ in my book.

@@thotslayer9914 That's a rather kind interpretation of libertarianism, and the harshest interpretation of this videos definition of stealing, equating it to welfare. Self actualization cannot occur without a certain base of satisfied needs. Libertarianism fails to satisfy that need for anyone besides a wealthy few, and as such fails to meet the requirements to achieve this videos ideal, which does not hinge the right to express human potential on resources. I agree with the video that these capabilities are inherent. As such any system that fails to provide a base for that potential for the majority is fundamentally broken. Sorry for the long response, I just get sick of people equating an ideal for the individual to what a governing body owes to the people it governs. Plus libertarianism is a fundamentally broken system for anyone besides those who are already affluent when such a system is implemented.
I think there's only so many stories you can tell. That could show another and a new perspective. There are so many movies that talk about change and being the underdog. This movie just makes it very clear and fresh.
The way ratatouille talks about food just makes me so happy. I love food a lot and sharing good food with the people you love, or just people in general, can create beautiful memories!
Pixar: Nonsense! Now shower me with praise! [Pixar then proceeds to throw a tantrum because someone liked How to Train your Dragon more than Toy Story 3]
This is why I love 's videos. He presents a deep philosophical perspective on media that not only helps explain it's message, but overall further elevates it. To contrast this, if a channel like Film Theory were to make a video on Ratatouille, the title would be something along the lines of "Does Remy From Ratatouille Have Schizophrenia?????" This demeans the media from which the videos contents are derived. Thanks for your consistent great analysis. I look forward to your next work.
I wouldn't say that it demeans it. It would just be tackling it from a different angle. Film Theory isn't a thematic analysis channel to begin with, rather it is primarily to entertain and speculate about plot. Having videos such as what you described would suit the purpose of the channel. As long as people enjoy it for what it is, I see no problem.
@@NorMadLad I'd disagree, it doesn't tackle it from another angle, it doesn't tackle the film at all. Rather it just speculates and conjectures on superficial details that the film uses as a vehicle for story-telling, rather than actually engaging with the story itself or even acknowledging it. It would be engaging in the story if the video was about how mat's interpretation of remy's perceived schizophrenia was in some way conceptually meaningful or relevant to the story's overarching narrative. But if the video is just about analyzing the scenes where remy is talking to the ghost of geusteu and comparing details to symptoms of schizophrenia, then making conclusions of remy's mental health of that; then that is not engaging with the film's story or themes at all because mat would just be making observations and then speculating on the mental health of a fictional character (whose mental health does not actually exist beyond what is essentially a vehicle for story-telling in the film, cause remy is a cartoon rat and not real). Basically, asking "does this character have schizophrenia?" is a pointless waste of time and effort that doesn't discuss anything relevant to the story, compared to a question like "what is the narrative or thematic significance of this character potentially having schizophrenia?" which does indeed tackle the story from a different angle, and one where there is at the very least potential for meaningful discussion and insight on the film.
@@orangedalmatian I think we have differing standards when talking about what is and is not considered another angle of the film. To me, the superficial details ARE part of the film and discussing it has its own value. I don't believe that discussion around a film has to only be limited to its story and themes. You personally may find the superficial details pointless and unengaging, but considering the viewership of matpat's videos, that is not the case for everyone.
@@NorMadLad pardon me if I made it seem that discussing themes are the be all end all of film discussion, was not at all what I was saying. As someone who has spent many a forum thread discussing DBZ power levels, what if scenarios in various films and shows and gushing over sakuga, I have no issue against discussion purely within the realm of aesthetic or plot etc. film theory is to me a more specific case of the discussion often being just trite and transparently for the purpose of appealing to and baiting a lowest common denominator.
@@maxskellington910 Who are you to say that there isn't a deep meaning present? I have always been one to advocate for the idea that art is separate from its creator once it has been created. The way one interprets a piece of art can be vastly different from how another does, including the author themselves. Just because this movie has the image as nothing more than a kids movie with adult appeal, by looking at the dialogue and interaction between the characters, we can extract a deeper meaning from it, even if it wasn't consciously present when the scriptwriters were drafting the script. I also resent your statement that he is looking at the film at a broad perspective. He is analyzing the key themes and ideas that the movie brings forth, using specific scenes and dialogue interactions to further his points. Your opinion on the video is just that, your opinion. Whether or not you believe that Ratatouille has deeper meaning is up to you. But do not disregard 's analysis just because you don't agree with it.

@18:40 One thing I love about this part of the film is that it doesn't take one side of the "following tradition vs. moving forward" theme like 90% of other films/shows do: It establishes a nice balance of respecting and honoring what came before us, valuing the lessons of old as a MEANS of growth rather than dismissing them solely as a product of their time. Even though Remi improves upon Gusteau's mistakes and the film criticizes the stagnant attitudes/actions of some of the characters like Skinner, it never dismisses Gusteau's legacy and he is still always seen as a mentor figure whose example holds immense worth. A subtle example of how this balance works is in the Ratatouille recipe scene at the end of the film. On one hand, it was Remi's decision to choose that particular recipe--and do his own take on it, based on his interaction with Colette in the scene. On the other, the reason why Ego was able to feel so strongly and enjoy the meal so much was because it touched something deeper in connection to his childhood. It wasn't something all that new, over-the-top, or overly inventive: It was a common dish that brought Ego back familiar days. The dish was indeed something unexpected, but it was in its callback to something of a more humble, meaningful origin.
There's a lot of occupations that are more technical than something like cooking, and those may seem to have no room for creativity or excellence, but the fact is there's always room for improvement. That means you can always change procedures, techniques, materials, add or subtract elements, anything! There should always be some time for research and development, because that's what makes it worth it. At least that's what I got out from this video. Btw I loved the Star Trek scene at the end
That's basically the job of engineers. To improve a system, make it easier to use, and lower costs. For example tsunami alert systems are being engineered to become better. Yeah sure they might not sound as creative as art, music, cooking... ect. But people can be creative in different ways even if it's not obvious.
Not gonna lie, I cried from this a bit. I consider myself an artist, I lost my motivation due to a dead in job getting me nowhere. I've worked there for nearly 3 years now. This video hit me hard in that kind of emotional way that could affect an artist. I highly value creative thought and imagination, it's the one thing I have that keeps me going besides certain other things like my love for anime, gaming, film, and my family. Without my creativity I would lose a major part of my soul that makes me, me. I also value the creativity of others, everything we have today in the modern world is because of someone perhaps from the smallest of places stopped and said "I want to dream big". Going off topic a bit but one of the greatest arguments I have for people who say Original Characters(OCs) are cringe, is that every single fictional character ever was once an OC themselves and if you say OCs are cringe you're admitting that someone like Darth Vader is cringe or that Iron Man is cringe or someone like Goku is cringe. It makes absolutely no sense at all. OCs are how new, potentially great characters are born. That is why I value creativity so much. Embrace the new and respect the old. Thank you for this video sir, you made a subscriber out of me.
This video inspired me to re-watch Ratatouille as I've only watched it once; roughly when it came out for DVD. In combination with this video I really appreciate it more as a work of art.
So, I’m reading a book called how to read literature as a professor, and I’m surprised that none of the chapters are about becoming human. Listening to this midway has already began to make me think about other things, like NieR: Automata, and how what you say applies to it, such as becoming a rational animal, and how that is represented through the robots disconnecting from the network. They begin to think on their own, becoming a rational animal (well robot) and take the first step towards developing a relationship with the androids, similar to how the rats begin making a relationship with the humans. While I haven’t finished NieR: Automata, I’d like to see how it develops, and I’ll keep this video in mind.
Man, it's the first time seeing one of your videos (TH-cam recommended it to me), and dare I say that that was a video I needed ! Rataouille is one of my favorites movies of all time, one that I can watch many times in a row and still don't get bored. But now after seeing this video, it makes me want to watch over again with a new understanding ! Thanks for the video and please continue making videos !
I don't know how you did it, but you made me somehow love this genius film even more. The way this film is written is beyond intelligent and I only realized 10 times more from this video.
So glad other people appreciated this movie. Was in elementary school when I first saw this and still one of my favorite disney movies to date (also helped that I was obsessed with the video game for gamecube lol).
"Individuals can never achieve perfection. But they can pursue it, and attain excellence." Thanks for your review of the main characters this way. I really appreciate it in terms of their motivation and satisfaction. Subbed.
You made me love a movie that I couldn't understand and disliked as a child. All my life I knew there was something special about this movie, but finally hearing the deeper meaning in every aspect of the movie makes me feel like, everyone *needs* to watch this for the betterment of humanity in both integrity and creativity lmao. Honestly, thank you for even existing.
As someone in the comments once said, Ratatouille is a fine wine of Pixar. It's an amazingly well-done movie, and you know what? I'm glad there were no sequels. The story is amazing as it is, and it has the most excellent characters! Anton Ego, for example, is an awesome anti-villain type of character, who is, despite being shown to us like a typical snob, proves to have no hypocrisy in himself, recognizing Remy's excellent cooking for what it is and fully accepting the truth about the cook behind it, going as far as to risk everything to try and defend that discovery he had made that night. Anton's review at the end of the movie is one of the best speeches I've ever heard!
do all 'rational animals' inherently have the potential to be excellent in what they may choose to be excellent at? rather, does choosing to act on one's values and creativity always mean they will be successful and happy? what if Remy could not ever cook something considered good by anyone? should he continue to strive? if so, how many failures until its worth moving on to something else? well put together video, by the way. keep 'em coming.
Only if they have the talent for it. You can strive for excellence even if you don't have the talent for it, but it will be harder. With volitional choice, standard and effort, excellence is possible for all rational animals. Remy had the talent in identifying ingredients, but he used that talent creatively with cooking. Linguini is a good example. He has no talent for cooking and created a soup that induces vomit. He could try to become a chef, but he wouldn't go very far, even with a lot of effort. He only achieved excellence with a career that integrated with his talents. With introspection, you can know when something doesn't work for you; there's no real set number of failures. I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
@@The.TH-camr.with.no.Name. I can’t help but think perhaps this is why Soul was overlooked. It might not have the same staying power as Ratatouille’s message.
I've sent this to about 12 people I consider to be close in my life, in under 3 minutes or something. This video made me feel both praised and challenged at the same time - a combination I thought was not only rare but near damn impossible. Great job is a fucking understatement. Best 41 minute of my 2022 thus far.
Talking about Anton Ego, the critic with standards too high, capable of shutting down entire restaurants with a single review Also uses Nakiri Erina's theme from Shoukugeki no Soma That's a genius move honestly
Whenever I tell my friends that Ratatouille is my favourite film of all time, they give me a confused look and in response I say that it just speaks to me in a way that no other film could. This video sums up my feelings towards this film perfectly.
Dude the dead rat scene where one even kinda looks like remi is such a dark moment. I cannot believe they were capable of running it, and i’m glad they did to put some weight in the dad’s words. Also Cook Vs Crook is a great theme PS: remi and linguini is a fantastic combo
I see the dead rat scene as the representative of all the evils humanity can cause. Genocide, war, etc. Remy's father is basically saying 'this is life, there is only suffering.' But it's done in a way that even a child could understand.
Keep playing in the bg for the past few days, this video has given me the most in depth & precise answers to my questions on why I can't seem to strive for more and just want to just live by another day with minimal effort. Biggest take away and thing I need to learn is funnily the very 1st part of Remy you talked about at 1:06 "his true defining characteristic is his deep self-respect and self-love." After watching I realize I have been going out more to experience life to know what kind of life I want to have for myself. Just want to thank you, that your video has helped me in a part of my self-discovery currently!
This video deserve more views, this video must have took a lot of time and research to make, sometimes i'm really grateful for living in this timeline where there are content creators so fricking good!
This is one of my all time favorite movies, theres nothing i could change about it, the thing about it is that Ratatouille is the kind of movie that cant have a sequel, the story just comes together perfectly and the end leaves everything in a perfect state, just like a good movie should...
"Food is fuel! You get picky what you put in the tank, you gonna starve!" Which is ironic, since with most vehicles, you do have to be picky about what goes in the tank.
I can't believe I just watched a 40 minute commentary video! This was just that awesome. Thank you for sharing your observations. Your points about the importance of independent thinking and creativity were especially interesting. Also, I never thought about Linguini's waiter arc as too significant, but it truly does tie in with the movie's message about humanity and having a purpose in life. Would love to see more movie commentaries in the future!
The best part about this is that: The fucking video is the evidence that what it says is true. If this was a speech on something more "classical" and traditionally seen as intellectual it wouldn't have the same impact. I just got fucking mind blown on philosophy and creative endeavors and what makes being alive being alive by a god damn analyses of a animated rat movie. If that dosen't prove the point that excellence can be found and imbued in anything from anywhere. What does.
this is a great video. ratatouille is one of my fav films of all time, no joke, and when people ask why or it comes up in convo i always try so hard to explain like. the pure celebration and demonstration of humanity in the film? this vid hits it right on the head! great stuff
and adding another thing i forgot to say - this video also gave me likke, idk, not to sound cliche but a glimmer of hope for humanity? the world has been in such a devastating state lately and being reminded of the good of humanity is nice too.
This was actually one of my favorite Pixar movies. There was just something graceful about it. It's really hard to explain the specifics about what I mean... It's just different.
I like your Star Wars videos, but I've never felt the desire to rewatch them like I do with this one. I rewatch this every year or so as one of the many reminders of the greatness life has to offer. This is the perfect analysis video.
Amazing video, a perfect lesson about life and flourish. To find your own potential and creativity and acting from your own convictions, even if you were to fail. To do nothing and/or to hurl others out of resentment is the most bitter and self-betrayal of self-living. Become who you are!
I'm so glad someone made a video on this movie. This movie has always been my favorite, ever since I was really young, and it makes me so happy to see you give justice to this amazing film
This video editorial is perfect in every way to which I can describe Ratatouille after watching it for the first time. It’s funny, because I saw its rip-off "Ratatoing" first before Ratatouille. Comparing both movies together, while thinking over after watching this video, it makes me appreciate the art of animation as a whole for its beauty and creativity, being made from people with a passion and love for it, while rip-offs like Ratatoing are only made for money. Stealing played a big part in both movies, where one says it’s wrong no matter what, while the other is somewhat glorified in order to maintain a business. Ratatoing’s plot revolves around a rat and his friends stealing fresh food from a neighboring restaurant and using that stolen food to make their own food and sell it to customers at their own restaurant, while a rival restaurant tries figuring out how they get them so they can steal the fresh food and run them out of business. The plot’s message alone of stealing goes against everything what Ratatouille stands for. It’s as if the rip-off glorifies thievery and that if you steal, you too can become successful. The 'movie' alone has many problems of its own with its terrible story and animation, but its message is absolutely wrong. The company behind it has made many other rip-offs of other highly acclaimed animated movies from Pixar, Disney, and Dreamworks. They alone is a representation of Skinner from Ratatouille, as they are too stubborn for creativity and making anything new, going as far as to steal someone else’s work and make their own just to make money. They lack passion and creativity, and that’s something they do not care about at all except making a quick dollar to trick naive people into buying their versions of highly acclaimed movies, but in reality...it’s garbage, not even worth stealing from a store or on the Internet.
I rewatch this movie whenever I'm feeling sad cause it's so inspiring. Nothing changed but the ppl. It's literally a completely different and better place in the end
Kreia was truly a great teacher to be able to use such a wide variety media to push her teachings. Traps. Lolis. Now rats. (Legit the whole thing about Remi being charitable and then it leading to misfortune fits so damn well to the Kriea video i just watched)

I still remember back when I first realized that this video was made by the Kreia guy. I was surprised at first, but then, I really wasn’t surprised at all. This movie is the perfect example of the fact that kids’ movies can have incredibly high standards. Making the main character a rat is just perfect in conveying the theme, given how deeply human this movie is.
In order to fulfill his dream, Remy needed courage and faith in him. He's just like humans, he wanted a change and he's the only one that saw good in Linguini, even if his father showed him what happens to the curious rats... . Moreover, he has a talent, he knows how to combine the food(sweet with salted). I always liked "Ratatouille", especially when Ego changes, his life, as a critic, is not a happy one... but, when he ate what Remy prepared for him, he remembered his mother, preparing the same food, that always made him happy, impressive!
I didn’t mention this, but I’m going to describe how this really connected to me deeply. I’m an artist who has felt stuck in a rut, until I coincidentally thought to search ratatouille to waste time, until I found this gem and now I rekindled my will to be the best painter the world has ever seen. After all only we can guide our lives ourself, setting high expectations and breaking them can make us seem like gods, and people of all talents; edm, music, animation... earned those to Make Their Lives better, and so there’s no respite in wanting to achieve all of those in the single life I have.

In my opinion, the art, animation, and film industry relies on too much of the familiar, and is very unkind to new talent.

This is the best analysis I've ever seen period. I just wish modern Disney and Hollywood in general can follow to the standards Ratatouille has established, instead relying on the past and brand names to survive. I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you, sir! ;)
I’d arguably say that the standard was set by The Incredibles.

The line “with luck, forward” is one of my favorite lines in cinematic history, I don’t know but it very much speaks to me
There's a lot of occupations that are more technical than something like cooking, and those may seem to have no room for creativity or excellence, but the fact is there's always room for improvement.
@@Syphrilyn That's awesome! Thank you for the comment.

Anton's review at the end of the movie is one of the best speeches I've ever heard!
i can't be the only one who still visits this video from times to time its so relaxing to watch
do all 'rational animals' inherently have the potential to be excellent in what they may choose to be excellent at? rather, does choosing to act on one's values and creativity always mean they will be successful and happy? what if Remy could not ever cook something considered good by anyone? should he continue to strive? if so, how many failures until its worth moving on to something else?
well put together video, by the way. keep 'em coming.
Everyone has a talent and if not, additional effort is required to make up for it.

Whenever I tell my friends that Ratatouille is my favourite film of all time, they give me a confused look and in response I say that it just speaks to me in a way that no other film could. This video sums up my feelings towards this film perfectly.
They said, let me bust out the philosophical analysis but hold the pretension. Great video! The script was terrific!
Re watching after over 3 years and this movie and analysis are as incredible as ever.
Dude the dead rat scene where one even kinda looks like remi is such a dark moment. I cannot believe they were capable of running it, and i’m glad they did to put some weight in the dad’s words. Also Cook Vs Crook is a great theme
PS: remi and linguini is a fantastic combo
I see the dead rat scene as the representative of all the evils humanity can cause. Genocide, war, etc. Remy's father is basically saying 'this is life, there is only suffering.' But it's done in a way that even a child could understand.
Keep playing in the bg for the past few days, this video has given me the most in depth & precise answers to my questions on why I can't seem to strive for more and just want to just live by another day with minimal effort.
Biggest take away and thing I need to learn is funnily the very 1st part of Remy you talked about at 1:06

This video is so good and so wholesome that the comments show it as well. That's the beauty of communication and art.
The best part about this is that:
The fucking video is the evidence that what it says is true. If this was a speech on something more "classical" and traditionally seen as intellectual it wouldn't have the same impact.

This was fascinating to watch, and I think I can genuinely take something from it, thank you :)
Great video, Ratatouille is my favorite animated movie and youv'e helped me appreciate it even more.
I have a quiestion to ask: "Is it true, that when a human being becomes God, it also stops its own growth and self-improvement?
Yes. Humans can never become Gods. Just like perfection, we can never achieve it, but we pursue it and achieve excellence.
Thank You!
Once you become perfect, everything is downhill from there.
jinhong91 So we can strive to perfection, but never reach it. The moment we say: "I'm perfect" - we cease living, even if we continue existing!

Aristotle is the head chef of philosophy. Hue hue.
This pushed some of the most creative deep philosophies back to back, applause to you.

I want to give my biggest thanks to you, and I hope you have a very good day. ❤️
