I explained my personal situation to o1, and it advised me against paying $200 for a model with 1-5% advantages across the board, chiefly in reliability and math. So $20/month it is.
It's going to suck when AI start being trained in advocating corporate interests. We're in a golden age now when doing that would let the competition get too far ahead with the wasted compute.

It really isn't 1-5% lol. It supports 128k context tokens compared to 32k on o1. I used it for 8 hours today with some prompts over 50k token and combined conversations going over 100k tokens. It is precise, very very low hallucinations and impressive. It thought for 6 minutes also in one case. O1 pro is insane. I am thankful it's 200$ so most people can't use it easily. I will be ahead of competition

I start using paid chatgpt for programming and it was terrible. Buggy code in every answer. Then I teated out Claude and it immediately solved all the bugs for me. I switched over to Claude. The only problem is I hit my limits faster/ they're always complaining about high demand.
That's because they test against flawed benchmarks that mean absolutely nothing. It's 10x better at cheating on benchmarks every time which doesn't translate to any improvement in real use.
Same here. Everytime I use it I regret the time spent caressing the prompt to give a plausible answer. And then it's just plain wrong. Then it excuses itself and from that point gives me only wrong solutions. It works 10% of the time but otherwise it's a massive waste of time, unless you want 'creativity'.
Eventually all AI providers will raise prices. They are giving us access to models for cheap right now in order to hook us onto their products. Once we depend on them so much I can see them charging hundreds of dollars a month. They have to make money at some point, this phase of investing billions without making big profit cannot last forever.
Yeah when AI becomes your #1 life companion they can do that. But this isn't even close to a reality right now. Maybe is 2077 in some Cyberpunk dystopia when we have robots in our house to do everything, maybe then we can pay the equivalent of $500 a month in today's money.

If you can prove in court that they purposefully falsely represented their plans and solicited donations and avoided taxes while already knowing they would become a for-profit enterprise, then it's illegal. But considering the legal representation that a 100+ billion dollar company can afford, you're unlikely to win that case against them.

That is true, at one point i cancelled my chatgpt subscription and bought one for claude. The results were great in the first 30 minutes after which point my credits ran out and it eas like i was back to being a free user. @@matta5749 I have used copilot for 2 years in my job, only made my productivity worst. it was able to tell me the easy stuff that I already knew, but when it did a mistake the mistake was bad, because was hidden under correct structure. Lost more time fixing copilot bugs than actual coding. And think, if they had developed a product which you could just type some simple text and it would output a working code , they would earn more money by solving the problems themselves instead of selling their magic goose for 20$. Seems like OpenAI has abused the GPT architecture to the point where scaling it further will yield such diminishing returns that it's impractical. The o1 "reasoning" paradigm feels like it's contrived and exists solely to ship a new product. If it's so expensive to run inference on that it costs ~10x more, thats not really that impressive or exciting (from an AI perspective at least). How would you tokenize reasoning anyway? Reasoning isn't a discrete process. The only reason it works for language is because different people generally interpret the same words similarly. This must also be a much less parallelizable task (based on the response times), so it doesn't seem like it'd be practical to scale this either. It's probably a good pivot from a pure research perspective, but releasing a product in the AI space that costs $200/month might be a (sort of) bad look for "Open"AI.

The Pro model of O1 does give you a bit more compute. This actually would matter to me in some cases. If I were about to build a big project for my business I would spend the extra $180. I've started using Claude and found that I always run out of context tokens, or like message length, or whatever. It's annoying.
I start using paid chatgpt for programming and it was terrible. Buggy code in every answer. Then I teated out Claude and it immediately solved all the bugs for me. I switched over to Claude. The only problem is I hit my limits faster/ they're always complaining about high demand.

Same here. Everytime I use it I regret the time spent caressing the prompt to give a plausible answer. And then it's just plain wrong. Then it excuses itself and from that point gives me only wrong solutions. It works 10% of the time but otherwise it's a massive waste of time, unless you want 'creativity'.
Eventually all AI providers will raise prices. They are giving us access to models for cheap right now in order to hook us onto their products. Once we depend on them so much I can see them charging hundreds of dollars a month. They have to make money at some point, this phase of investing billions without making big profit cannot last forever.
We are also “the product”. We are training them with real-world data.

It’s not necessarily about quality (though the higher price plan has more tokens) but it’s probably more about volume, maybe as an individual you can get by on the limited access on the smaller plan, but if it’s a business with large volumes of users, using it a lot, then the £200 a month (or 2.4K a year) is small change

If you can prove in court that they purposefully falsely represented their plans and solicited donations and avoided taxes while already knowing they would become a for-profit enterprise, then it's illegal. But considering the legal representation that a 100+ billion dollar company can afford, you're unlikely to win that case against them.

Spell checker is an okay way to quickly deride this tech as it's a familiar way we use it, so I don't think the vitriol in the first response was warranted.
@@matta5749 I have used copilot for 2 years in my job, only made my productivity worst. it was able to tell me the easy stuff that I already knew, but when it did a mistake the mistake was bad, because was hidden under correct structure. Lost more time fixing copilot bugs than actual coding. And think, if they had developed a product which you could just type some simple text and it would output a working code , they would earn more money by solving the problems themselves instead of selling their magic goose for 20$. But yeah, you are free to believe in the guy that is selling you the treasure-map and the shovel, instead of going himself pickup the treasure, trust him...

The one thing I found intriguing is have you seen the view counts on the OpenAI promo videos? 120k for day 2, and 430k for day 1. Not exactly massive exposure.
Seems like OpenAI has abused the GPT architecture to the point where scaling it further will yield such diminishing returns that it's impractical.
The o1 "reasoning" paradigm feels like it's contrived and exists solely to ship a new product. If it's so expensive to run inference on that it costs ~10x more, thats not really that impressive or exciting (from an AI perspective at least). How would you tokenize reasoning anyway? Reasoning isn't a discrete process. The only reason it works for language is because different people generally interpret the same words similarly.
This must also be a much less parallelizable task (based on the response times), so it doesn't seem like it'd be practical to scale this either. It's probably a good pivot from a pure research perspective, but releasing a product in the AI space that costs $200/month might be a (sort of) bad look for "Open"AI.
I remember when Elon wanted to pump the breaks on AI. Now he seems to be all-in. He just wanted everyone else to pump the breaks so that he could get ahead of the competition. Elon has no problem exploiting government to get what he wants.

The Pro model of O1 does give you a bit more compute. This actually would matter to me in some cases. If I were about to build a big project for my business I would spend the extra $180. I already like how much more precise O1 is at getting the nuances down the first time so I don't have to iterate as much.

O1 pro is by far the best llm I’ve used for coding. I thought Claude gave me chills but o1 pro gave me chills again.

I think the problem in it is use is how it improves. You can't make a product with a barrier like that unless it has sufficient use by the users.
