except it's not a keyboard. you left just about all the keys. A keyboard is only a keyboard when it has all the keys: numbpad and macro buttons, and they're properly spaced. My condolences you don't know this. That braindamaged half assed **THING** has to go, come back when you have all your braincells back and make a keyboard, thank you don't come again.
Why in the world have stepped caps locks gone away?! I press unstepped ones accidentally all the time. I guess maybe they're not quite as pretty but they're so practical! :p
I´ve actually always wondered the point of stepped keys until I learned that many people hit those keys by accident, that hasn´t ever happened to me, I´ve even changed my layout recently by moving shift and ctrl keys up by one row so they´re more accessible
The actual purpose of stepped keys is to make it so you don’t have to stabilise them. Switches like buckling spring or Cherry MX can handle up to about 1.5U unstabilised, so if you have a 1.75U key you can either spend money stabilising it (extra complexity is costly even if the actual parts cost just about nothing), or you can give it a step so that it’s effectively still just a 1.5U key. That it makes the useless caps lock function more difficult to accidentally enable is just a happy coincidence. Personally I just do the UNIX layout and rebind that key to Ctrl. Way more useful and ergonomic.
Hitting shift (or especially caps lock!) by accident makes me crazy so I always disable (using VIA / VIAL / QMK etc.) the shift / caps lock keys and move the shift / caps lock function somewhere far away to like the F12 key or to a foot pedal or separate macro-pad etc.
I always look forward to your commentary on modern keyboards. You provide a much needed perspective that is so often lacking on other channels that cover keyboard stuff.
After using HHKB for a while, it is now mandatory for me to change caps lock into left ctrl (so I have 2) and use it as your regular left ctrl, trust me it saves you bending your left pinky in ways you can't imagine

Chyros I know you said these wipe the floor with contact based switches but have you tried any HMX switches? HMX Sugar Rush switches are incredibly smooth and sound amazing, with really tight tolerances. I have found that while hall effect switches are really really smooth, the fact that they need to have a magnet inside the stem causes them to have rather plasticky bottom out sounds. I have yet to find a switch that sounds anything close to HMX or Gateron milky yellows in the hall effect form factor.
Yeah, they typically don't sound great. Some older HE switches sound pretty good though. but they don't have a lot of comforts that modern HE switches do. I don't know HMX switches no, maybe some will cross my path at some point :) .
I tried several keyboards with HMX switches last weekend at a keyboard meetup, they even gave me a bag of them (though someone nicked it in the end xD). I found they felt pretty nice, but still not as effortlessly smooth as contactless switches. It's the buttery-vs-airy comparison I've made before; you can tell that the contact surface is greater, and even it it's smooth, you can feel the difference. There was more binding as well, though that makes sense for a switch with such tight tolerances.
When I get a keyboard preassembled I always say to myself, this time I'll keep it standard for a while... but five minutes later I'm ripping off the keys and opening it up, often resulting in a 6 hour customizing session way past bedtime!
The day they come up with a hall effect switch that sounds as good as my Banshees I'll give it a go. Not worth the marketing gimmick if it sounds like crap to me imho.
If they actually made a Battleship or Battlecruiser keyboard with HE Switches and this type of case and case foam it would be.... HHHHHHHHIDEOUS-ly expensive. Let's hope not. 😅

They still exist in many keycap sets you buy separately, but yes they vanished from prebuild keyboards.

"it saves you bending your left pinky in ways you can't imagine"
You must have uncommonly low finger dexterity.
Just place your hand at an angle so your hand is angled towards ESC key and your pinky will be on the ctrl on its own..
@@SatchmoBronson Even with good dexterity it gets unnecessarily tiring when you have to use it very often with certain programs like text editors

Not sure if the software is anything good, but for sure it really is one of the most good-looking HE keyboards, sadly it's ANSI layout only.
Chyros, can you do a project L or NEC blue oval switch redux at some point?
I'll have a think about it, but it'll be a while at the least, I've got a huge amount on my plate right now ':D .
@ I see
I personally can't stand anything smaller than a 75%
It would be great if you can do a comparison between all the different between hall effect switches. Which are the smoothest, most reliable etc
Surprised you haven't rebound capslock to escape.

The keycaps look a bit shitty in comparison to the gorgeous block of aluminium.
Sometimes I feel like I’m the only one who can’t take heavy keyboards…it’s just too inconvenient for me. Impact nothing for typing experience also.

Has anyone ever made a custom keeb with 1u stabilizers under every key?? LOL
Sort of. Razer's LK switches have a stab in each switch.
@@Chyrosran22 Cool I'll check them out!
And I realize that notebook keys have a scissor mechanism which you could call a stabilizer :) flauw hoor
Sounds pretty shit tbh
