Hey everyone!!! Here it is - my reaction to vol 8 episodes 1 and 2 of RWBY!!! WOW!!!! Can't believe I'm saying this, but here we go with Vol. 8!!!!!!!!!!!! What a start to the volume....for the first time since Vol. 4, it really feels like we're not all on the same page again. It's not quite as bad, but maybe in some ways even worse, because we're emotionally separated instead of physically separated. :( Nora and Ren are breaking my heart! Meanwhile Penny and Oscar have a lot of soul searching to do, we're trying to divide and conquer and take care of all the things, Ironwood is officially just GONE, Cinder is taking way too much credit, and oh yeah....let's not forget "NO"!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE FUUDDDDDGGGEEE!!!!!! Wow guys, what an epic start! Can't wait for more but I have a feeling it will be a bumpy ride! Enjoy!! ~ MH

One of my favorite smaller details about the second episode that I didn't realize until pointed out. Throughout the episode when it's following yang's team, you can actually see the hound in a few background shots showing that it was stalking oscar through the whole episode.
Yeah, on my second viewing it creeped me out.

Get ready girl, this volume is no joke. Also just a slight heads up, the first 7 episodes are considered the “tamed” part of this volume.
It's not though, well the finale has stuff but it's not.

fun fndm fact: when these episodes were airing, people in the fndm called Yang, Jaune, Ren, and Oscar's team JOYR (Joyride) and then, when Oscar gets ,, uh snatched, Yang, Jaune, and Ren were jokingly given the nickname TEAM NO GF

It's pretty crazy to think that even though Salem hasn't ACTUALLY done anything in terms of fighting, she is still the most feared character in the show and in all of Remnant. She wins by fear and paranoia, placing doubt in people's hearts. Even the smallest crack can bring down the strongest walls.
Don't forget she has real power, surpassing a maiden
@@anaemiliaalmeida7238 oh, I'm very much aware. But considering the only time we've "seen her fight" thus far was in the lore episode and that wasn't really shown. So far, her game is getting in everyone's heads and making them destroy each other from the inside out.
It takes effort, shared experiences, familiarity, and many days/months/years to build trust, but only seconds to shred it to pieces.
That's the thing with invincible charatcers like salem tho .... even if she couldn't fight it doesn't matter since you can't kill her anyway xD
I mean yeah considering she's already played Ironwood like a fiddle she's real damn good at what she does
Weiss getting launched up the tube is bar none the funniest thing the show has done for me. And that includes all the crazy funny stuff Qrow does.
It was certainly the high point of the volume.

V8 is essentially a three way war between Atlas, Mantle/RWBY, and Salem.
RWBY does a bit of a misdirect with Robyn yelling. I cannot for the life of me recall anyone not thinking she was yelling at Qrow at first.
You can actually see the hound observing Oscar and co. three different times. Its easy to miss, but its there chilling in the background.

I don't think it's a misdirect just for some "ha ha fooled you" reason, but also to show that while Robyn is not talking to Qrow, he is still taking the words in, feeling guilty for what had happened.
@@ApsuP Probably. I'd say that is the more likely case or what was actually meant to be conveyed. It was an unintended consequence of how it was shot.

I feel like you should know as a heads up that volume 8s story takes place over the span of like 2 days, cause I wish I would’ve known that when I watched it.
That is a HECK of a lot to go through in two days.

I love the Hound’s theme, it’s so freaking great and I hope it’s made into a full song on the soundtrack. The Hound is such an awesome addition to the lore, once it talked I’m pretty sure my jaw dropped till the end of the episode.
FYI: Joe Clary, the Co-Director of Animation for Rooster Teeth, messaged that in order to keep all the employees safe (due to the pandemic they are all still working from home), and to make sure the volume quality isn't rushed, RWBY V9 will be premiering in early (hopefully!) 2022.

When I first saw the first episode I was like "Okay there's NO WAY people are gonna excuse Ironwood MURDERING someone right? ._." ......... I was then disappointed 😊
Marrow, Elm, and Winter seemed shocked by it. Vine doesn't really emote, but I can imagine he was taken aback. Harriet though was all "Hmmm... Oh well."

Well, he *was* a power hungry general, leader and military dictator for years, using drones to watch the population and obviously never cared about lives and security in Mantle, but people (in the story and in the audience) seem to overlook that a lot...
There are still people that defend his actions later in this Volume 🤷🏾♂️

Unfortunately I got the Hound speaking spoiled for me, as well as a few other important events this season. It sucks that people are so careless about posting before non-first members can watch. Anyways, these were still great episodes!
Oh no, for sure. It wasn't just you. Ironwood was hella manipulative with Penny.
I'll tell ya this about the intro, when I first heard it it gave me the same sense of stress and dread as the opening from Volume 3.
Idk if it's been mentioned (I don't really look at the comment section) but the entirety of Volume 8 takes place in the span of two days. Just fyi.
Yeah this volume should be interesting for interactions. Team ups that are not common, pairings and characters who don't often mix. It should be fun.
Yeah... that thing *did* just talk. The Hound is terrifying. Intelligent, far more than anything else we've seen so far, can shape shift and grow what it needs, and can even talk. Makes ya winder what the hell Salem is up to and what else she may have created.

Okay, I'll start things off by saying I don't know how far you've actually watched with Volume 8 so far, but things get INTENSE.
The beginning of the volume is tame compared to how quickly things progress as you approach this volume's Point-of-No-Return.
While I can't say much, you will not be disappointed by Winter's development during this season, because after that opening moment, she also has a LOT of soul-searching to do.. We get a LOT from her.
No matter how dark and depressing things may seem to be as the volume progresses, Do Not Lose Hope.
That's one of the main messages behind this volume.
We're all patiently awaiting the beginning of Volume 9, and at this rate you will be fully caught up in time to wait for Volume 9 with the rest of us, and perhaps by then, we can discuss ideas and theories of what is to come without fear of spoilers.

EDIT: With regards to Episode 2.
That moment in the slums between the two children (one human, one faunus) is really symbolic of a potential future, and the ideal that Oz was charged with striving for. Unity through Diversity and Acceptance of one another regardless of how they may appear.
It's just sad how everything needs to fall apart before people are forced into situations that require them to be accepting of others like that.
Also, regarding that 'Weird Grimm' at the end of the episode. You weren't hearing things. It did speak to them.
I can't say too much because spoilers. All I can say is that Grimm is commonly called 'The Hound' and it was definitely created to be smarter, faster, and stronger than every other Grimm we've seen so far.
Ironwood just shooting anyone who might even slow him down by arguing is pretty indefensible. That being said, I think it's a little unfair to say he was lying on that call. People *will* die; and if this goes wrong and Salem gets the relics, it *will* because of the choices that our protagonists made.
Similarly, is it fair for Ruby to say that by defying Ironwood, Penny did protect Mantle? I mean, look at how protected Mantle is. How long do they expect the population to survive in the tunnels? Indefinitely?
But, like the intro says: _sometimes it's worth it all to risk the fall and fight for every life_
Does Ironwood have grounds to trade the lives of the people in Mantle? Does RWBY have a right to risk the lives of the people in Vale, Mistral, Vacuo and Atlas? Discuss.
There is a lot of gaslighting in this volume XD
Although, in Ruby's defense I think she meant that by Penny becoming The Winter Maiden, she gave Mantle a better chance as this denied Cinder the power and therefore also denied Salem access to the relic. It buys them some more time anyways.
I do appreciate the twin approaches between the two groups. If they cannot get help for Atlas/Mantle, they can at least warn the other Kingdoms as to what is going on and give them a chance to prepare. On the other hand, I also agree that the immediate problem is getting Mantle's population to a defensible position. Jaune and Oscar both made good calls here; work separately but towards the same goal.
I'm going to have to bring up something you said in the first few seconds of this video when you end the volume.

So let’s review: local Law Enforcement is siding with known vigilantes group against the present military, the Good General went full rouge Villain, and somehow the dipshit forgot that Penny was “The Protector of Mantel” Ah yes this one, I don’t see anything about her protecting Atlas. As a maiden it could be argued she’s supposed to protect everyone, but what about those who reject their right to protection via criminal behavior 🤔 Ah what a conundrum we have here. It’s old news I’m sure but to understand everything you have to take all sides into account even the side of those who should never have been conceived, only then can we see the big picture.
I would just love to note that in the scene where Oscar is feeling down about his plan going wrong also brings up a lot of things to note in this volume and in volume 7. About what was the right way and what was the wrong way of doing certain things. And this theme occurred a lot in this volume and the previous one. Also to add in episode 1 when Ruby touched Oscar shoulder to console him, he blushed, which I think is a very cute Rosegarden moment and it at least shows that Oscar holds some type of feeling towards Ruby.

@@elecferret Ikr! Not a lot of people noticed it but when I went back and decided to re-watch the volume, I looked at Oscar and I was like wait did Oscar just... So I replayed it again and I was like OMGGG I KNEW IT lol.

They're not being split so much as reshuffled, so everyone is where they need to be for the sake of the plot. My biggest complaint was Nora - who spent the entire previous volume speaking for Mantle - suddenly changing her tune; the only decent counterargument I've heard is that she's been supporting *Ruby* the whole time. As for Ironwood... shooting Oscar was one thing, but this cold-blooded murder reduces a once-interesting character that was falling from grace into a fullblown cartoon villain. We never see the councilwoman again, either, no idea what happens to her. I suggest you pretend he merely detained them instead, it will make his moral and mental decline flow much better than this.
Not much to say about the second chapter, after a while I just started skipping to the Weiss launch and the final scene. (Robyn has no right to be pissed after her own fuck-ups, we get more overt examples of racism. Fiona is a total sweetie, but an entire scene with tertiary characters is a waste of screentime.) *Everyone* says something to the effect of "Someone do something!" at that point, and they probably could've done something when the grimm turned its back and took so much time sprouting wings, too. That said, excellent introduction of the Hound, which was the whole point. I call it the G-1000, mimetic polygrimmstuff; and I spend much of the volume hoping for a showdown with the P-101, synthflesh over metal endoskeleton.... Penny, I mean Penny. Terminator showdown, let's go!

I hate this volume so your reaction will actually be the first one I've watched past episode 5. (I used to watch at least a half dozen different reactors right after watching the episode, but, again, hated it).
Edit, after watching: God, I forgot how much this volume sucked. Just starting, you've got Yang being a total B to Ruby when it was YANG deciding to tell Robyn about the plan that drove Ironwood off the deep end in the first place.
(I do like Ponytail Winter in N7 armor though)
RWBY itself has been kinda delayed unfortunately.. Coming early 2022 instead, which I've been deeply disappointed about, but still excited to see
