Absolutely wowed, especially when his eyes are up staring at the camera and simultaneously teaching while improvising...impressive. My goodness this is amazing on every possible level!
It's crazy- If you're a church-goer/musician you learn all these concepts. I knew exactly what was going on, but never had truly had the words to communicate exactly how to do it. Until now! Thanks Mr. Sneed & Jazz @ Lincoln Center!
Maybe not theoretical training but playing by ear has taken me and most people I know to another level long before the days of TH-cam. And of course watching the older more seasoned musicians here in the south. Lol so you guys can probably consider yourselves “trained”
This unequivocally is the most comprehensive yet compacted gospel demonstration video I’ve ever seen. So professional and just enough! Well produced. Not to take away from the prime time sites out there but this in my opinion is a paramount instructional to gospel music.
This is the best explanation of this traditional Gospel genre I've seen. I think it's the only one I've seen. I am familiar with this from playing bass at church, but seeing it explained like this actually helps too.
"Put your time in, payday's comin' after a while." Words that touched me this morning. There is a positive end to all of this that we're wading through. It's going to pay. Came here after going online to a local service where they sang, "Have you tried Jesus?" It's been years since I visited this video and it was nice to find my way back. Took me a little while to find it again. I was thinking it was at the Kennedy Center rather than out of Lincoln Center. Typed in "Have you tried Jesus jazz" and it brought me to a different Damien Sneed video which I was then able to use to get here. I love at the end how he says, "Ok, you've seen how it's done, now you try" like it's just that easy. Although in his favor, he does give a lot of information as to what he's doing. Maybe one day I'll sit down and learn how to do what he's doing on that piano of his. What a gift this is.
Just amazing. Damien's way of explaining the music theory side with the cultural background of gospel music while never missing a beat on the piano is just flawless. Highly entertaining and inspiring!
There is a gift here that goes beyond ability. To sing to what he is playing like that, the coordination is remarkable. Bass being played, then his right hand and still the timing and dynamics in his voice and instrument. Just amazing.
Ol boy is s beast for being able to talk normally and give direction and instruction while stayin in time and keepin the hump goin lol also the modern term for the hype part of the vamp is "bump"
I grew up in the south going to church every Sunday/Bible study/Sunday school the whole 9 and he is spot on! He slick just gave y'all a cultural studies class infused with music theory. He is most def a music professor. Thanks for sharing.
@3:04 - Chord Progression: Ab(7 or 13) - Db7 - Ab(7) - Db7 - B7 - Bb7 - Eb(7 or 9) - Ab. Not positive if I got this correct, but this seems to be what he explained.
B7 is really Cb7 in theory for the key of Ab to keep all in context. Therefore Cb7 is the bIII7 chord borrowed from the parallel Ab minor key and using secondary dominant 7ths through out except for the real dominant which is Eb7.
@@iluvjazz7 Actually, for key of A flat: the 2nd 7th cord is B flat, D flat, F, A flat. This guy is playing first inversions with root on top so he can add the 7th ( A flat) in with ring finger.
Hello all! I am Negot Seraphin from Haiti. I've been playing music for about 12 years and never satisfied with my performance. I am transformed after watching the video "How to Play 16-Bar Congregational Songs in Gospel Music" of Sir Daniel Sneed. I can't keep it secret, the video is WOW. If the video is WOW while Sir Daniel Sneed is the one who makes it with his staff. Therefore, they're WOW, Just to say I appreciate this ability and I am going to practice now to be a seasoned pro at playing not only as it's my cherished dream. Keep being you as you progress with God your Lord and the music you're playing to Him.
As someone who grew up in the 60's and played in Church and Sunday School in the 70's, I struggled to figure out how to play Gospel like this! I learned to play piano through reading sheet music and lesson books. I wonder if you "Millennials" (and I mean that with love!) know just how blessed you are to have resources like Damien Sneed on TH-cam. Thank you Damien. I'm pretty sure I will be playing this over and over while at the piano practicing!
Absolutely fascinating. On the one hand, I feel so intimately familiar with the music from growing up in church, yet realizing that I'd never really understood the details of its mechanics. I've studied some music but not quite like this. Very grateful for this academic breakdown!
This is a great lesson, truly it is. As a guitarist, it's been in my heart recently to start back attending church (regularly, not sporadically). To actually play for God and church instead just sitting in the pews. This instructional breakdown of the 16-bar congregational song is informative as well as inspiring. Thank you, and as you can see, God will lead you to the waters when the He has placed a thirst in you. Knowledge.
Or perhaps he's not an immature jr. high drummer and is more like - "damn I know my role in this particular song and am enjoying the crispy sound of the sidesticks and how they lock in with the piano and vocalists because not every song on the planet is SUPER LOUD WITH RIMSHOTS"
Brillant! I've been sooooo heavy hearted for so long. I think I forgot what I used to know and was an everyday part of my life. So it's the Savior, through music!!!! Thank you ....thank you. I feel better. Wonderful
This entire crew is Simply Amazing! I have to give props to the Mr. Sneed as instructor, as he is teaching and talking and playing at the same time. What an amazing mind you have from God. I'm quite sure that you're a math whiz as well. Am I right? God bless and thank you for these highly instructional and informative videos.
Love the teaching of these series. I could have missed it but I kept waiting to her homage paid to composer and pianist Thomas A. Dorsey, Father of Gospel Music and composition of Take My Hand, Precious Lord.
Thank so much for someone who can actually correctly explain what they are doing.... I knew the brother was on-point when he called C-flat as the correct note in the A-flat minor (seven) chord I have been looking for someone who could explain how to play gospel music to a musician who is formally trained in theory. Sounds great and has fantastic voice leading. Praise God for who HE is!
I have no idea what some of the more technical terms meant but it was such a joy to watch someone that has mastered their craft teach and play so effortlessly.
This gentleman is...well, I have no words to articulate his skill level. Moreover, his knowledge of musical styles and their regional nuances is impeccable. Lord, help us to find a worship leader for our church here in NYC.
I started touring as a saxophonist with the Voices of Praise Gospel choir at age 14. My first experience was an acapella congregational Dr. Watts hymn “I Love the Lord” in a church built in the 1800’s in the middle of nowhere in Texas. This was 1995 or so. The song performed by Damian Snead and company was a very commonly played song that I loved to improvise sax fills to. Wonderful rendition!
Your definitely a teacher.. Great lesson.. And man you took me back to the old time days.. I remember going to this holiness church amd man they sung all these songs!!! My soul is happy now.. 💯💯🔥🔥👏👏💪💪🙌🙌
I'm a protestant Canadian whose people came from the british isles...I love the music of the black church...thank you for this very informative and stimulating presentation. You're great guys. Randal Grant - Montréal, Canada.
dude knows his theory like flowing water. im convinced he started playing in the womb. Very impressive. great to have found this, I can introduce my daughter to playing gospel here in Japan.
Not only did I jot down the progression which I will practice everyday, but also I started jumping around and dancing and acquired a sense of wanting to be in the service everyday:).... the most beautiful thing about this, apart from the fact that they are all rocking, is that they are enjoying extremely. The way it should be done, in the moment:) thank you beautiful people. God bless. Send you lots and lots of love:)
This is really wonderful. I had the pleasure of having Wycliffe at our church several times and we did some of the tunes that you had a great part in; Wade in the Water, I’m Glad... this video unlocks how some of the magic of the service can be created and the theory that goes with it. Terrific singers and of course the piano preaching is so amazing. Sharing this with my students!
Wow blown away at the explanation the presentation was on point beyond anything I’ve seen on TH-cam. 5 star rating wish I could learn from these people more.

I've been living in Asia and Europe too long... I can't wait to go home in a few weeks to visit Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and California. I miss our music SO much. :( You know you know you've been gone too long when you have to go to a jazz club in Switzerland to get your gospel praise fix, lol.
Wow this is cool.. my husband plays bass and i sing on the praise team. We often have songs that follow these chord patterns😊. I hear organist calling out things like go to 1, 5 7,go to the 2 and so on.. all the musicans follow his lead.. My husband explained and said he was calling out chord changes but its a pattern. While obviously a talented musician, the man's got serious multi-tasking skills
Basselious ABSOLUTELY
I know right!! It’s crazy lmao 😂
They cut out the part where he’s instructing the people off camera what cuts to use.
That’s so true
A lot people do this all the time.
He is a beast. He goes from sophisticated to soulful in seconds. So much skills and technique. God bless all of these young people.
He is skilled and anointed … love it….
Beast??
@@evhvariac2 It's a compliment...means he's formidable.

EXACTLY! MY MUSIC THEORY CLASS WASNT ANYTHING LIKE THIS!
Cause our music theory classes focus on European musical concepts. They really take Gospel for granted. If you can play gospel, you can play anything.
Yes! So true i'm so glad i'm a music major
@Charlie K What University did you attend? And you should have learned similar concepts in Piano/keyboarding class
@embermarrow As in VINCENT SNEED
Down South, alot of us havent had any real training or lessons, but been playing this since we were 6. 😂😂😂
Donald Thomas That’s what I was thinking....

Donald Thomas exactly

great pedagogical example of how to teach theory correctly (aka not separate from context)
Although via experience I agree that learning the lesson in theory first then followed by the "show and tell" teaching style is necessary.
That's how Jesus make people smart!
I just realized i am way too churchy! Got happy on an instructional. LOL. Brilliant!
