Dear Ash. The bleed-through and feathering are a function more of the type of paper than its weight. I still have old air-letter cards, which are extremely light (about 30g/sm), and work happily with fountain pens. I also have heavyweight art paper, which has to be sealed to work with a fountain-pen. The thing is to get a paper intended for fountain-pen inks. At the opposite extreme, heavyweight newsprint will always feather and bleed with liquid inks.

My wife bought me an insanely expensive Banvard & James nappa leather notebook for Christmas. Happily it comes with free refills so will eventually pay for itself. Eventually...
That and my trusty Parker IM make for a wonderful journaling experience!
Another thoroughly enjoyable video. Keep up the great work Ash!

Yes, I did find the Leuchtturm 1917 Outline - waterproof notebook really handy. Got it in Land Rover Green. Really recommend them.

I literally just finished writing in my journal when I noticed this video pop up on my phone. I have been using a Rhodia Web Notebook for my last few journals. But that Leuchtturm 1917 looks pretty nice. I think I’ll give it a try when I reach the end of this one. Thanks for the tip! Lately I’ve been using a TWSBI 580 Diamond with Noodler’s Nightshade ink, a wonderful combination. Also, love that cardigan sweater you were wearing on this video. Cheers!

I've been using several different A5 dot grid journals ever since my "accident" to keep a look at my health issues (and, I'm a horrible person who cultivates grudges, to keep notes on just what and how things relate to this and what I can *bill* to the opposing insurance over the years) and a couple of years back my sister got me a Leuchtturm 1917 in dot grid pattern and it's easily the most comfortable yet - it (and that is all the ones I've been using over the last couple of years) takes the Octopus ink I use in my fountain pens extremely well and it's just a joy to write in and on.
Happy to see you enjoying the brand!
    Best regards
    Raoul G. Kunz

I am an avid Moleskine user. As I looked for a good notebook, looked into Leuchtturm 1917 and Moleskine. I prefer the Molsekine. I cannot really say why, I just like this product better. I have the A5 with blank pages. I use it in the office for meeting notes. During the pandemic, I rediscovered my love for pencils and take my notes with this writing instrument since then. It makes it easier to draw tables and small sketches. I also avoid the ink bleeding.

Ash, long time listener and appreciative fan. I’m retiring in January of 2024…the 1st actually and I’ve decided after watching you to start a journal to dedicate the next chapter of my life to pen and paper. I’ve always regretted not journaling when I was about 14 because that’s when my life really started getting interesting. So subscribing to the “it’s never too late “ theory I’m going to do it. Thank you for the inspiration.

I think something is going on with the algorithm. Despite the fact that I always choose your content when it is presented, your new videos have not been coming up in my feed for about a week. I have had to go looking for them based on knowing your release schedule. Before a week ago, your videos would be in the top of my feed the moment they came out.

Thank you for another great presentation. I feel using good quality stationery compliments dressing well, particularly in a business environment. For many years I used Filofax and Franklin for work. I still enjoy my Filofax but Moleskine took over until, like you, I discovered Leuchtturm 1917. One addition I like are the adhesive backed elastic pen loops they sell; fitting a variety of pens including the unusual shaped Lamy I prefer. Nothing like preparing a fresh journal equipped with a fully charged pen!

Thanks for this nice review. I'm using the Leuchtturm weekly planners for years now and I'm quite content with them. I also used a Moleskine notebook. As I'm using mostly fine nibs it was ok but when I tried some broader nibs, I had ghosting and bleeding all over the page. Currently I'm using Clairefontaine MyEssential notebooks and Leuchtturm planners. For me this is the perfect combination.

A well done review. I am not a big writer but I'll take a look at these in our local shops. They certainly have a lot of features and an index and numbered pages certainly makes it more useful to those who are used to using a computer for notes.

After watching your Kaweco fountain pen video I was hoping you'd make a video on a good notebook to use.
I've avoided notebooks due to the lack of organization. But thanks to the Leuchtturm's (Which I will never be able to say right) feature of an index and numbered pages. I can actually see myself using such a book along with one of those Kaweco fountain pens.
    Wonderful video as always, Ash.

Some of us chaps chose more active hands on careers ,& decided to leave all that regular type of pen pushing to office types . Back at my old school one was expected to hand in all written work ,in fountain pen & blue/ black ink . It was seen as very bad form to use a biro ,& would result in execution in the heads office at 9•30 AM . Therefore out of habit ,one always keeps a quality fountain pen & blue / black ink ,for signing off important papers & the odd personal letters ,as required . Before I retired I scribbled most of my notes & technical measurements on pieces of scrap timber ,or any scrap of paper or fag box one could find on site . 👍

Excellent video. Personally, as a British person I like to use U.K. made items if the quality and price is right. So for me I like to use Silvine notebooks, reasonably priced and good paper quality. I do wish they were numbered pages though!

Hey, you should know that bleed through has nothing to do with paper GSM. It’s the quality of the paper : Moleskine paper sucks (they changed the quality), but Tomoe River Paper for example, which is 58gsm I think, is great for fountain pens. I always love a notebook video though !

okay Ash, after all this time, I can finally offer some advice to you for a change. I think a pair of rimless glasses would suit you much better. I know they're only reading glasses but they look boring and generic and make you look older than your years. A pair of rimless glasses would make you look sharp and modern and fresh.

Is 80 gsm the same a photocopier/printer paper?
With your fountain pen, do you use a cartridge or converter?
Is prefer to use a converter because when re filling my pens, I can write straight away, not like with cartridges I have to wait for the ink to flow into the nib!

    • @TheChapsGuide
