Showing mistakes is important and wonderful. It shows our humanity. In my opinion, if an artist doesn't make mistakes or have failed paintings - they probably aren't pushing very hard!
I’ve only just started painting but discovered early that having a second attempt at a painting that didn’t work out too well is a great technique for improving. Without exception, my second attempt is always light years ahead of the first.
Thank you so much for all your helpful advice. I’ve been struggling with watercolor fora very long time. And I feel like you’re the one who can help me rise above my mistakes.
Only just found your channel Eric. Your videos are very helpful and I love your presentation style. Thank you for taking the time to make these, even when you are very tired...
I discovered you a two weeks ago. You are so calm, clear, easy to listen to and follow. I also appreciate your sense of humor. You keep me inspired and wanting to create and improve. Thanks!
Thank you very much, Eric. You do such a wonderful job of teaching and showing how to do things. It helps to see where you found you could do better. Thank you!
Eric, your failed painting is still better than my best successful watercolor. Almost to many good hints in this lesson, I will replay while writing notes.
Thank you Eric, so much. I find your teaching so helpful to me a beginner still struggling with muddiness. But I just love the way watercolor looks so you inspire me to keep going. I didn't know that doing a painting several times was a good thing so now I have your permission! Until next time!
I had never thought about doing a value study in stages as the painting progresses instead of completing the value study before starting the painting. Thanks!
I had to stop at 5:15 so I could go sign up on Patreon. The is the lesson I needed to hear, exactly when I needed to hear it. Thank you for this insight. Subscribed! 😻
Watching this video, came just in time for me..I’m an Acrylic painter, and turning my hand to watercolour,I’m constantly adding layers and losing the transparency…watching your fabulous work, reminds me to be prepared with my washes, and then the paint won’t dry too quickly, and I can add whilst it’s still moist. It’s definitely a work in progress!! 🇨🇦🇺🇸
I purchased a #10 round synthetic brown hair brush . that I use exclusively . I take extreme measures to clean immediately after a session. Dish soap & scrubbing in the palm of left hand rinsing until no color remains in continuous rinsing
Just re started your painting course. Gave up re covid stuff last year. Looking forward to basics I should have dealt with years ago. And thanks for all the videos calming and challenging plus so inspirational. Best wishes always .👏👏👏
I find that sometimes overworking paint in a watercolor is due to a lack of confidence in my drawing, I have to trust my drawing ability and keep from slopping more paint on to correct what I think are errors or corrections needed but are really not.
Good advice. I have found that with any better grade watercolor I can achieve the same result as with the best but ...I need sometimes up to 4 more glazzes..here is my biggest problem...they begin to look like my oil painting..I loose that watercolor look....airy....I can achieve depth but that's not what I want.
I'll be honest, I really like your 1st attempt more, although the sky is better in the 2nd attempt. I prefer the colour you gave the underneath of the bridge, the wider lane and colours of the cars on the bridge and the details of the rocks. I hope this doesn't mean I'm going to make bad paintings by your review? I also noticed that you used warmer colours in the 2nd attempt which are not the colours reflected in the original photo?
Amazing videos and incredible content! Hey Eric, do you mind touching on the topic how to paint big? Recently I just realized in order for my local community gallery to accept my work, I have to paint on something big. My mind went blank for a while when they told me about the size. Do I need to get larger brushes? For sure I have to buy more pigments and practice on larger paper. The cost can add up really quickly. Plus, for techniques, it’s just crazy to imagine this… almost feeling like painting a wall…how to get that many details to fill in a huge blank sheet of paper? I Not many people talk about this on TH-cam channel…. How did you make the change when you started?
When it comes to situations like this painting where cars are needed, but the space is very small....Is it possible to utilize a rough-'sidestroke'....kinda like how Chei Chung Wei can use a sidestroke to establish an entire city of lights in a night time painting?
Thank you for this video. Your advice is so helpful! May I ask, what size brushes would you use for a 9x12 painting? Do you switch brush sizes in a painting? Thank you.
Your voice has such a calming tone. Just compliments your beautiful teaching.
Yes, indeed... it *complements* his great teaching ;-)
A small grammatical thing...
@@lohikarhu734 I agree, serious and no cute banter...wasting half video time.. good teaching ability
finally! i found the watercolor teacher, i have been looking for. Thank you! thank you!

I want to paint the golden gate scene, your painting is the inspiration.
Thankyou, Eric. Your recommendation of the use of a big brush is most helpful, as always
Wonderful video. Really helped me understand how even transparent values are so important. Thank you for sharing your own growth as an artist.

I know you are talking about traditional water color media; but can these principles apply to digital work as well? Thank you Eric!
to a certain extend. Digital is much more forgiving though, you can cover things very easily and cleanly since you can set the opacity level.
Well you can never really messup permanently a digital work :)
@@tiagodagostini Yes, agreed!

There is NO SUCH THING as the definition of a successful painting.
I HATE using water color - it is just too bloody difficult!!
I understand that feeling. But then the challenge keeps bringing me back.
@@janiworthen My family gets very upset when they hear the word "F**K!" followed by the sound of flying brushes.
