  • This shows the history of the old South African flag and the choosing and raising of the new flag. It shows the moment that the old South African flag was lowered and the new South African flag was raised for the first time on the 27 April 1994 at the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town. The anthems of the country, Die Stem van Suid-Afrika is sung while the old flag is being lowered, and Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and the English version of Die Stem are sung while the new flag is raised.

English doesn't work as a uniting language because not all South Africans have English ancestry unlike the US, UK, Australia etc. Afrikaans is only Southern Africa. The green of the new flag is from the South African republic flag, together with the red white and blue which also represents the British.
    They might have tried to make the old flag illegal but most of the old colours live on in the majority of the new flag. Just using different shapes has disguised how much of the old colours are still in the new flag, and not alot of people who were against the british and boere have taken notice. I'm actually quite surprised that this flag has not also been banned for the majority of colours it still represents. I guess the boere and British live on.

      @Daan Schlüter And you wouldn’t have a chance of preserving shit. On one end you had all the groups like the AWB, MK (ANC-SACP), the IFP, you’d also have to deal with the SADF, SAP, and all the Bantustans. And on the other end, you’d be able to count on very little support from anyone else. You’d be less than 10% of the population this whole time, and it wouldn’t be like Rhodesia. South Africa is larger, and with a more spread out and massive population.

    • @alexanderfooy723
      @alexanderfooy723 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Daan Schlüter I mean, rather everything going to a full-scale war than whatever’s happening now is textbook accelerationism. Most (not all) African countries seem better off than Zimbabwe and have not had similar politics, so I’ll call it exceptionally bad. What made apartheid unsustainable was the increasing international isolation South Africa was faced with, which was leading to the devaluation of the Rand and little trade. It’s also frankly hard to run such a large country when you’re committed to keeping large amounts of people separated, which places quite the burden on the economy. The 10% aren’t enough for South Africa on its own. Also, South Africa spent basically the last decade/decade and a half of the Apartheid era in a state of emergency due to the levels of violence of the time. It was a horrid state of affairs. The Union died in 1961 with the end of British rule, btw. That was the other major change that took place at the time. None of this is an endorsement of the present state of affairs, by the way (and I see the concerns), but just saying that an attempt to continue apartheid would have landed South Africa in an even worse state (alongside my own disagreements with the policies themselves).

      A United, Prosperous and Independent South Africa is Born, thanks to the African National Congress, it's Allies who helped the people gain their independence from the evil apartheid fascist regime, and to give thanks to our Divine Liberator, Comrade Nelson Mandela: The Man who have United the True People of his motherland, the Unifier who he, the Springboks and his allies and supporters won at the 1995 Rugby World Cup in his own home country, and that even though his passing was tragic indeed, the legacy of Madiba and all those glorious liberators who came before him and after him will always continue on for the next generation to take his place after another. One who can do the same as Comrade Madiba once did for his people, but turn South Africa into a Continental Superpower, Similar to the U.S., Russia, China, Britain, France, and other Secondary Superpower Nations.

      The anthems were combined in 1997 in a new hybrid national anthem. As for the flag, it had the virtue of offending no one. Afrikaners resented the Union Jack in the old flag and it had little to do with their national feelings. There were continuous attempts to get rid of it but they never succeeded because no one could agree on what a new flag should look like. All that changed in 1994.
