I live in an area that's hard to escape ( only 6 main roads out of my state and non existing secondaries) and would be required to bug-in. Also have many preps. Just recently, the emergency alert system was activated in the early hours of the morning. The negative backlash was enormous. Me, I'm happy that it was a drill. It made me aware that catastrophic events don't wait for lazy, hazy, sunny days. Time to wake up and smell the coffee, if you have time. Don't be complacent.

Consider only putting things to make a shelter, fires, food acquisition, etc. related material inside the handle. Put water tabs, caffine, meds, etc. In your pocket first aid kit. That way you will have more room for wire, fire starter, cordage, fishing line, hooks, etc. Wrap a couple of the end handles with paracord.

One thing I believe would be an extremely useful configuration for a survival shovel would be to have it also perform as a trekking pole. The benefits of a survival shovel are many. However, carrying one around can be annoying or even cumbersome. The benefits of a hiking pole or stick are also numerous. Hiking and trekking poles are designed to give you extra confidence and stability. They may help relieve stress on your joints, especially when going uphill or downhill.
Having a combination trekking pole and survival shovel would be a very complimentary combination. I would imagine keeping the shovel head in its pack while using the rest of the pole for trekking. Now, you’re not having to carry your pole, but you are putting it to good use as a tool for hiking instead of it being dead weight.

A thing I have never seen mentioned on any prepping Channel is filters for coffee and tea, they would also have different purposes like filtering dirty water, use it for seeds and gathering elderberry ect.

Plastic straws, especially larger diameter ones, can be cut to a desired length and filled with any number of things. Then the pliers from a multitool are used to close the straw just before an end and a lighter is used to heat the plastic at the end. Then the pliers are used to squeeze the hot plastic, cooling it and sealing it together. Done at both ends, you now have a sealed plastic container of any small item that you want. For things like toothpaste or triple antibiotic ointment, leave both ends open and squeeze the desired amount into the straw first, then seal it up.

@@thomassellars7390 That works. Bottles, particularly water tight ones, are heavier larger and more fragile. Usially harder to source. The bottles are asier to open, easier to load, but also need to measure better if you have more. To each their own. BTW I use both. Electrolytes, whitener in straws -- I don't use sugar -- are sealed, waterproof and in proportion to the size of my cups and bottles.

I have a similar item that converts to a walking stick. One thing I did was wrap one section with survival paracord to help gripping when hiking and also gives cordage when needed. the core of the paracord also works as snare wire and fire starter material.

I have also drawn out on a peice of cloth, a checker board. near by branches can be cut into chips. Instead of colors I have different sizes. Large and medium. You might consider a ziplock bag or such for a container for the water for your aqutabs -- and for waterproofing when the shovel is disassembled in your pack. BTW, the cylindrical nature of the handle pieces would be handy for "hand line fishing". I am surprised you didn't get the freeze dried rib eye in there.

About snaring small game for sustenance - buy a wooden rat trap or four.
Lean decent sized stick up against a tree or trash can or something similarly.
Animals are not stupid and are just as lazy as humans, as long as they can walk up the stick instead of climbing it vertically…they will.
Since you got the wooden rat traps, drill little holes in them and secure them to your leaning sticks/branches.
If you want a big boost on return on your investment, put a tiny little dab of peanut butter or cheese or something on the trap.
Things like squirrels, birds, mice, rats, cats etc will walk up/down the stick and get caught in the trap.
Now go and find a video about how to clean and cook the game, personally we are forever grateful for Junkyard Fox and his videos…check them out.

Just a thought for using the fish line. It would be quite easy to wind fish line on a sewing machine bobbin. I haven't checked the inside diameter of the tool but a sewing bobbin might fit right inside.

as a guy that has done a lot of digging and shoveling i feel a spade shaped shovel is good for turning over soil in the garden or for shovelling sand into a cement mixer. If a shovel is needed to prepare a surface to be flatter or for digging a trench then a 8" wide square shovel is better and especially so when encountering roots while digging trenches as it is more effective at cutting through them than a spade which deflects. It would be good if that company offered a square shovel end as an option as it would be better for tent side preperation or burrowing in root filled soil

Something else you might want to consider adding inside would be some sling shot bands. Next to fishing and trapping, some good quality sling shot bands can be a great hunting tool.
You can easily hunt small game like birds and rabbit , birds and with the right bands, you can shoot arrows with close to the power of a 40+ pound recurve bow, giving you the ability to take down medium size game like deer, once you craft some arrows in the field.
