The last clip is the one that matters. Buck, in the finest human tradition, opened his perceptions to a reality hundreds of years past his own. Even if he was "almost" dead, if I recall the episode correctly.
The voice couldn't have been anymore wrong for the part. What was the director smoking when he looked for voice actors. Mel Blanc was good for Flintstones, Looney Tunes and other cartoons. But not this.
In the 70's/80's, why did they think future robots MUST make a sound like that instead of just talking? :) Twiki could speak English afterward so why not just start with the English?
Because that matched their everyday reality. This was before the age of digital sound. Machines that produced sound were invariably mechanical analog devices, and those devices DID make extraneous noises before the music or speech started. Record players made hums and clicks as the record dropped and the needle moved into position. Jukeboxes made similar noises as a mechanical arm pulled the selected record out of a rack and dropped it on the turntable. Cassette tape players made loud clicks as the buttons were pressed, telephones and radios made static hisses, and so on. Even computers made initial mechanical sounds, since we're talking about an era in which they had to read their programs off of noisy punched-card readers before they could start. That bidi-bidi-bidi noise could conceivably have been the sound of Twiki arranging the futuristic equivalent of punched cards into place for his next utterance.
@@danmerget I agree with this 100 percent. Floppy diskettes that came after punch cards are also very noisy. I will also add that noises like Twiki's made the show seem more 'futuristic' back then especially to geeky kids like me. I also love the sounds the space fighters make when they are taking off in the tunnels. Notice how the sound Twiki makes is very similar to a futuristic Porky Pig. No surprise. Mel Blanc did Twiki's vocals.
So, in the future, they have the technology to create a robot that can walk like a human, function autonomously, but when speaking, it has to say: "BEADY-BEADY-BEADY-BEADY"
That *is* about the size of it and the major problem I had with it when I was six years old. And Erin Gray was so luminously beautiful I could hardly look straight at the screen when she was on, I was so embarrassed by the crush I had on her. My first TV crush!
I actually prefer the beeps to the speech. Sounds too Yosemite Sam (for a good reason, I know.) The female Twiki was way more odd, and her beeps sounded like booty-booty-booty, which means something entirely different nowadays.
