I did suggest this a while ago but worth repeating - you could improve the flow through the exhaust housing by tidying up the casting. These Chinese turbos are rough inside and restrictive compared to the IHI originals. This will produce boost earlier and help lower the exhaust temperature.
Here's a link to a how-to video which gave impressive results on the same turbo entitled:
"Ninja 500R turbo VZ21 More exhaust housing modifications":

These CHEAP turbos are rough inside and restrictive compared to the IHI originals.
The point being in the 1950's - 60's anything made in Japan was cheap junk, that changed, however Japan still makes cheap junk depending on what you buy. Same as China, its what you buy.

I knew that the taller gears wouldn't help. We had an '81 VW Rabbit diesel pickup that came with a 5-speed overdrive trans. A couple of our friends had already bought their Rabbit pickups with the standard 4-speed trans, and were getting over 50MPG (52-53, if I remember correctly). We thought that the 5-speed would get us even higher mileage, but it averaged around 45 MPG, as the little 1.6 liter diesel (no turbo) just didn't have enough oomph to run economically in 5th gear.

OK, the lawn mowing outro did it. I thought I'd mention Thunderhead 289. He grafted a lawn mower carburettor on to a Ford 302 and got some pretty insane mileage out of a Maverick. Not nearly as good as yours but still pretty impressive for speeds up to 75 MPH.

Strangely been thinking about it for years. Been looking at my 9n tractor with that in mind as well. America needs a light diesel option with a manual transmission. Saturn is likely the last quality (for small american cars) option with that viability. I just wish those 3 cylinder diesels weren't a billion dollars. What I really want to do is mesh an electric motor with this diesel engine and proper regen brakes. It works for the train industry...and I'd love to toss this in an S10 or ranger. I think it would resolve the slow starts and improve mileage, obviously.

    • @bartlevenson7851
      @bartlevenson7851 ปีที่แล้ว +24

@@Cowboy.underwater This will lower the fuel milage for sure. the problem is that you are too severely underpowered, amd the turbo- the smallest in the world- cannot develop good boost down at 1600 - 1800 Rpm where you will see exponential increases in diesel fuel mileage. an ideal solution, if you can score the 4 cyl. 1105cc Kubota diesel, would be to transfer your turbo and intercooler set up to them and use the tallet gearset. It would be happy and relaxed cruising at 50- 55 mph as the engine has 60 more displacement and torque from the get go and with the turbo it would make some semi serious torque wher you want it, which is below 2000 RPMs. Tony Capana did this back in 1981 in Torrance Ca in 1981 with an old Mazda sedan that he modified with different Kubotas and he achieved 85 mpg cruising at 55, and 101 mpg at 50 mpg. He was running bald tires with 90 PSI, however, so the car must have ridden like hell. He also managed 74 mpg in a VW Beetle with a 1300 cc Kubota. His son, Lloyd, managed nearly 50 mpg in a '74 Camaro with a 3.3 liter Mitsubishi industrial diesel turboed to make 130 hp and 2.56 rear ends plus overdrive so he could cruise at 50 mph at 1200 RPM.
When I drove semis in the 1970s, we got 4.2 to 4.7 mpg. Now with engine improvements and aero improvements, drivers are averaging close to 7 mpg, an I know a guy with a 13 liter Volvo with turbo compunding who gets 8.2 mpg cruising at 63 mph! He is only turning 1175 RPM at that speed. That is nearly 1000 RPM slower than we did 45 years ago!

Is there a chance the exhaust temp is unchanged inside the engine? Where I expect its more important?
I don’t think cool air is making its way back to the sensor but maybe a drop in pressure is causing a temperature drop? Or maybe the exhaust temps dropped everywhere. The motor would be working less hard with less restriction. Anyway I like the project. Best part of my Sunday morning.

I enjoy you channel because your goal is to have fun with cars and use "cheap" experiments to learn something. The nearly free gear swap is great example.
One thought when doing mileage tests is since you fuel tank is so small it might be quicker just to remove it and weigh it before and after the test to get amount of fuel used.

That turbo is so far improperly sized for that engine its basically useless. You should be after something that will hold at least 20psi at cruising rpm/load. This is not a gas engine, that amount of boost is not going to blow things up, it might allow it to burn enough fuel to hurt something but thats only a problem if you give it that much fuel. It might be possible to get a lower a/r exhaust housing for that turbo or more restrictive turbine wheel, but it seems like its just intended for a much larger engine. As it sits 0 psi holding speed, its not doing anything for engine efficiency.

I have commented on it before but porting the exhaust housing of the turbo to match the size of the pipe coming from the exhaust manifold should help it pick up response and possibly get you a couple of PSI of boost while cruising.
This could also be helped by making a 2.5” down pipe that’s about 8-12” long coming out of the turbo to act as a expansion chamber for hot exhaust gas allowing the turbo to spool more rabidly as there would be a greater pressure differential across the exhaust turbine.

After years of driving my honda CRZ, i realized i somehow get better fuel economy with my driver side window down and the AC off(AC off and window up is better) Odd that the AC would have that much affect, maybe i need a new compressor, or maybe it is over/under charged, feels like it blows cold air quickly, but that doesnt really mean there is nothing wrong.
About the best i can average per-tank is 55MPG(over 500 miles with about a gallon or less left on this 10 gallon tank)
for short streches i can go a few days where the car says its averaging over 70MPG but ultimately, i will have a few days where i am needing to drive more aggressively to make it somewhere on time, or make it to a light before it goes yellow bringing the average down.(edit, ialso dont really trust the MPG measurement and wonder if it is just starting high and getting more accurate with time, i mostly just use it as a quck gauge to make sure i'm not driving it too hard)
Oh, and in my area, getting this better fuel economy often means speeding, as this car likes about 52MPH but most of the speed limits are 45MPH if not on the highway or interstate which are both out of my way by a bit.

When I was in college I had a little '84 Nissan diesel that got about 55 mpg at 60 mph with the stock engine. Fast forward 40 years and you really can't get significantly better mileage from a car. The EPA made it all about emissions and mileage has at best stayed the same. The EPA mileage estimate for that car was 45 mpg I think and a few years ago they tweaked the test and knocked about 1/3 off the ratings of all older cars to make it look like new cars are better but they really aren't.

Not knowing anything about Saturn MP2/MP3 transmissions, this may be a dumb question - but why didn't you use the MP2 4th gear as 5th in the MP3? Being closer in ratio to the MP3 4th gear would have raised RPM in 5th and allowed you to use it (theoretically).
