New subscriber here! Very helpful video for getting powerhead off my QD-17 so I can address upper shift rod issue. Much appreciate the time you take to make and share your videos.

Brandon good videos! just freed up two 1958 Evinrude 10HP back to back. Pulled them out of my massive garage inventory.I have mentioned this before in other videos. With both of them I did the old pull off the cylinder head carefully tapping each of the pistons not to hard & squarely back and forth. I use a small ballpeen hammer(recommend a brass one) while pulling a 3 ft breaker bar and socket back and forth on the flywheel nut. That 1958 red johnson powerhead is mint. I would of freed that up in ten minutes well most times not all. Instead of swapping with the junk motor but thats just me. Then I would of put the Evinrude back together having so many parts which I am able to do so I am fortunate. One 10 HP took over and hour to free up. Im patient cause I know the outcome with heat and plenty of WD-40 tapping and back and forth clockwise ,counterclockwise with the 3 ft. breaker bar and tapping at the same time. The second motor took about ten minutes that had the stuck gearcase also dont know until you try each one. Both of them run perfect now after polishing the points and changing the coils too and some other odds and ends. They were in my storage garage for over 20 years. If you have any flywheel movement it will free up most times with my procedure every time just a note. The first ten I did was no movement at all almost gave up on it after an hour but finally started to move . What I do first is pop off the bypass covers if the pistons are relatively clean it will free up even rusty ones free up unless in saltwater and left for months or years to corrode .By the way one 10HP did have a stuck gearcase too making it add to the piston seize problem, no oil dry as a bone stuck, rusted up but rebuildable had a bad driveshaft seal. regards Glenn

I suppose I should have tried, but never hand much luck with it in the past.
I plan to tear it down for an inspection once this is done.

Im the guy who made the 9.5 thermostat cover boxed wrench similar to your adaptor seal plate waterpump housing wrench to work loose the castings so they dont break......

Hi Grandon, I'm swapping powerhead on my 1959 Evinrude 10 hp, will I get good results if I check compression on powerhead that's not mounted?

Hey man, I need some help! I removed the power head and crankshaft case. I don’t know why but I can’t get the cam off of the top of the crank shaft. I’m pretty amateur so any tips would be super helpful. I tried pliers and scratched up the cam so hopefully I don’t need to replace that now too. I’m doing the top and bottom seals.

Spray some lubricant on the top, then get 2x flat head screwdrivers and start wiggling it up evenly.
It might crack, it hopefully won't.
      Luckily replacing it isn't expensive.
...but only remove it if you need to.

Why was the power head frozen up on the original 10hp??? How easy is it to unfreeze them & what is usually the reasons for freezing up??? Thanks

      Yes.
Ive never had any luck unfreezing them. Once the cylinders rust, thats usually the end of it.

Next time use a drill on the flywheel when you check compression 👍👍

Not a bad idea, problem with that is I would need a drill that doesn't suck.

@@BrandonsGarage lol yeah that helps, might i suggest 18v from Bosch, use them at work, never managed to kill one yet even with falls from 2 stories down onto concrete 😋

Would you sell this engine now that you're done with it ?

    • @BrandonsGarage
      @BrandonsGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Probably, but I'm not done with it.
Still needs some things that need servicing; carb, ignition, gearcase, and water pump. Probably be done in a few weeks.

Cool deal I also have an old small one I'd be willing to donate if you're interested I'll look forever to try and find parts and or service information on it with no luck I thought maybe someone else out there would like to see you do a rebuild video on it.... it's a 1.2 horsepower single-cylinder Gamefisher.... the carburetor was missing a bunch of parts and needs to be replaced
