In the days before modern distillation you had to use 20% malt to have enough enzymes to get full sugar conversion. Distilleries at the time were using malts purchased from beer breweries. Even Kentucky bourbon at the time was almost certainly using much more malt. But after prohibition specific malts with higher enzymatic power were developed and it became common to add enzymes directly to minimize the need for malt. Because malt is the most expensive grain they used
Great info! Thanks
The A Overholt is a resurrection of the original Overholt recipe that was made in the Broadford, PA distillery, which closed in '53-'54. That rye is, in my opinion, a top 5 all time legacy ryes ever made in America. This new version is pretty close in complexity to the Broadford stuff, less cedar and lovelier high notes...but I am thrilled with it. I am quite surprised they didn't appreciate it....they're clearly more bourbon dudes than rye tho.
I loved that A. Overholt. I was happier paying $35 for that one than I did the $95 for the 10 yr.
Sagamore 8 crushes all of those.
Vermouth is actually good. But two problems exist. The first is most people only drink really cheap low quality vermouth. Saying vermouth is gross after drinking those is like saying bourbon sucks after drinking old tub.
Second. Vermouth goes bad. A couple weeks after opening in the fridge and a few days being open at room temperature is enough to start it downhill. But many people have bottles that are years old. Of course they taste nasty.
I'm from the burgh originally it's pronounced muh-naw-gah-hay-la
This is a river by Pittsburgh and you have nailed the pronunciation.
All my PA friends pronounce it muh-non-guh-hee-luh, but they're from central PA so...
I said “fck it” after 4-5 attempts and just mailed it in with “mongoloid Godzilla.”
@@TheSanDiegan lol funny enough I'm in SD now
Yes!!!... it is also a river in Pittsburgh that merges with the Allegheny River to form the Ohio River.
Oooppps.....I do enjoy the Old Overholt 10. I have 3 bottles!
You did bottom shelf whiskey. You did users most hated bourbons. Time for the Beam Suntory line-up. 10 bottles of Knob Creak, Jim Beam, Booker's and Basil Hayden.
Please no
That was the best comment at the beginning Dan 😂
2 Dudes, 1 Cup....I was scared for a moment.
a little fast on the reviews over past year but all in all thanks for doing these still. So much is coming out these are very helpful. Keep em coming
Both are fantastic. Old Overholt 114 is also great if you can find it.
Love the OO10. It keeps beating other similar ryes for me (RC-TKO, 11 year MGP)
Old Overholt 10 is a great value. Really there isn’t any competition at the price. Really enjoy it! I would love to see Beam rework the Bookers line since Elijah Craig Barrel Proof seems to be declining in quality. They have the stocks and the experience to turn out great stuff!
The old whiskeys produced in the OG colonies were very heavy rye, the East coast was not a great place to grow corn so they had very little extra corn, when people came to the West side of the Appalachian Mountains, they found corn grew much better and had excess which spurred the bourbon industries.
Man - we are similar in tastes for some things, but so wildly different on others.
Picked up the 10 year at Costco for 79.99
Great bottle.
Two dudes one cup lol
Commenting before watching the video because I managed to grab both of these and they are delicious. The malt in the A. Overholt is definitely interesting but i like it.
OO-10yr was one of my favorite ryes from last year. Pumped for this year's 11yr. What are some of the ryes you thought are better and cheaper???
Legacy distilled Rye's are THE BEST Rye's 👌 👍 😋😬
The regular old overholt 114 is pretty good at 33$.
How does the Old Overholt 10yr Rye compete with Knob Creek 10yr Rye or Bulleit 12yr Rye?
I am a big fan of the OO10yr. I align with Sean more in grade. It’s not the best rye I’ve had but it’s up there and then taking into account price. It’s a solid A-.
I’ve been curious about the A Overholt. I think Jason liked it, but said similar things that it is funky.
Do you know if the A Overholt is going to be a regular release?
“I would have no bottles of that.” 😂
Don’t make it weird right off the jump!
Am i the only who likes the 20$ bottle of the basic Old Overholt ?
Anybody tried smokeye hill barrel proof yet???
Every person in western PA just cringed when you said Monongahela.
Yea well we got some good ones in Michigan we can run it back on.
I've been nursing my 10yrCS bottle for like 6 months in fear I won't be able to replace it. It's my favorite rye mainly because it drinks like a bourbon.
Just picked one up the other day for $99. Definitely excited about trying it eventually.
@@Manbearpig80-re8vi you won't be disappointed!
The new Wild Turkey Masters Keep 10 year Rye is 260.00 I'm out on this year's. Spec's offered it to me today at the 260.00 and then Total Wine called me an hour later to offer me a bottle @ 320.00 (Hard Pass)
Best damn way to spend lunch break!
another timely review for a bottle that came out almost a year ago.
Almost like we only do like 48ish reviews a year and a lot more than that come out each year.
@@BourbonJunkies so why not make them relevant bottles?
"Moan-ong-guh-hay-luh" You studs!
It was a continuous stream...
Sean, it looks like you started with the 10 year, while Dan had the 95 proof. Both 10 yrs were on your side! Check the video to see if I’m wrong. Every time you had a glass in your hand you cut to a bottle shot so I couldn’t see exactly what you picked or if you slid one glass over to Dan.
It was cut and behind b roll of us switching glasses around
muh - non - guh - hee - luh, its an American Indian word (from Iroquois or Delaware tribes)
Did anyone here get a 13C 15th anni bottle? I almost got one but I forgot to login
Not close... on the Monongahela
Have you ever knew how to pronounce a word but heard it pronounced wrong so many times you forgot the correct pronunciation? It just happened
Y'all need to get some good vermouth.
too many GD Brandons
Disagree hard, the A Overholt I find unique and enjoyable at the price point, but taste is definitely subjective.
2dudes1cup review!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Dry Vermouth is gross! Try a 5:1 very dry martini!!
ma-NON-ga-hey-la
I don't think the bulleit mgp 95/5 12 yr is better than the A. Overholt, MGP is dill where the Overholt is minty.
Glad I passed on that A Overholt
Don't it's worth the sip these guys are bouchi3😊
