Vanya is short for Ivan in Russian, like Alexander/Alex or Richard/Dick (sorry nothing else comes to mind). For me, as a Russian, it literally sounds like plain Joe. I'm afraid there's no story behind that nickname, it's just his name, which is, no offence, quite common in Russia...
08:30 "Vanya" is not a nickname. It's just a "short" version of "Ivan". By "short" I mean more casual (unofficial). Basically every Russian name has this sort of thing, for use in between friends/family. E.g. I'm Evgeny, but Jenya for short. Dmitry would be Dima, Alexander is Sasha etc.
Another point to add, a main reason they will keep calling it a nickname is that some of the diminutives barely seem to bear any relation to the formal name. Alexander somehow turns into “Sasha”? 😅 can you blame people for thinking it’s a totally separate nickname
@@davidm2031 I think the misunderstanding here is the fact that the word "nickname" has 2 definitions, as in a familiar or shortened form of a proper name, AND later as an internet name, but in Russia (and I assume but might be wrong the rest of post-USSR countries) the word "nickname" got adopted into language only due to internet, and thus became a word that is specifically refers to someone's internet name, which is why (I think) people try to come to overexplain it in comment section. It's a weird thing that happened due to one language absorbing English word with a specific definition of it, gaining new meaning while shedding it's historical meaning it had in English language itself. It's fascinating stuff honestly.

Okay, Harstem just likes short-names in Russian/Belarusian language, Vanya is a short-informal name for Ivan. Nikich is kind of short informal name for Nikita
Wayne should be at the very bottom. When hearing Wayne people always think about 1 of these 2: LilWayne, the American rapper or Wayne the friend of the TH-camr Markiplier who always gets picked on in group sessions. :D At best Wayne sounds like a random dude you met on the streets in one of the US States.
... Bruce Wayne...?
Winter is a season, should clearly be in bottom tier. Maybe if he was as good as Reynor he could be in the bad category with him. Only Reason Reynor is not in bottom tier is because he's good. A misspelled character from a game should be bottom tier.
I like it - and it seems that Serral can't just be any other than S tier, no matter if it is his games or his nickname :D
Maybe the SWTE in ShoWTimE means Sleeping With The Enemy?
There’s a lot of possible stretches you can go on if that’s what those letters mean along with his real name and that he’s German 🤔 The Captain even said he has a solid play style and his name means the wall in a recent harstemcasts 😂
Best brilliant name for sure if that’s how much thought truly went into it.
A crime against humanity is the idea that someone even wants to name himself after Jim Raynor.
Apart from that a few honorable mentions:
Wardi, Rotterdam, Artosis, Idra, Grubby, Special, Goody, TLO, Naninwa and Nerchio (and so many more that did fall off)
Also... where is Dark? I know your rating towards english names, etc... but the way Dark got introduced 2016 during blizzcon and his attitude overall made this nickname always fitting and really cool to me.
dark sucks, it sounds too edgy on top of being a random English word
Wardi doesn't belong on a SC player list, he's too terrible and always has been. Forever-stuck trash at the game, doesn't deserve to be on a list with these true gamers.
@@tambaz2276 first of all, you underestimate wardi as a player - since he reached masters with all 3 races I am pretty sure hes alltime better than you at this game + lowko is on that list - and lowko waaay below some names that got forgotten when it come to ingame skill or tournament earnings
second: wardi is an important person for the sc2 community. hes not a pro player and hes not a good caster. but he works hard and deserves respect and brings us tons of games for others to cast. as winter says: respect to those who earned it. and wardi definitly earned it.
so maybe he doesnt belong on that list - but i think its fair to place him in honorable mentions as i did
@@christianpetersen6771 Lowko is WAAAY better than Wardi, and Wardii is 100% worse than myself. I'm Masters with all 3 races too and I have a crippled right hand and didn't play the game for ten years, but I can still log in and beat Wardi in a bo5 Random vs Random, while Wardi is involved in the game professional. Lowko is M1/GM. I still remember when Wardi was early into casting tournaments in WoL, MFer wasn't even diamond and trying to do analysis and basically just spouting pure bullshit to all his viewers. Wouldn't accept any help to make his casting more insightful (I was Masters all races already at the time, this was around 2011 or 2012) and less full of misinformation. I felt bad for the lower level players watching his stream and getting "analysis" from someone so clueless.
So many playery with great nicks or greant characters not inluded. IdrA, Mana, TLO, incontrol, ThorZaIN, NaNiwa (great name, if you ask me), DeMusliM, Dimaga, Strelok, White-Ra..........
Hm.....all these names remind me how old i am, and times when i was watching SC2 esport.....
I was tere Gandalfm 3000 years ago.
Harstems new favorite nickname : Harrstem
He forgot the Gracken
Vanya is short for Ivan in Russian, like Alexander/Alex or Richard/Dick (sorry nothing else comes to mind). For me, as a Russian, it literally sounds like plain Joe. I'm afraid there's no story behind that nickname, it's just his name, which is, no offence, quite common in Russia...
Someone as talented and handsome as Harstem has no business having so many good opinions, too
The nickname pro player tier list here we go .
im going to Maru Japanese Kitchen and Bar to meet Harstem tonight
Nice and fun video! But for a more realistic Google test, it should've been done in private browsing 😎

"Vanya" is not a nickname.
"it's not a nickname its a....."
Goes on to describe what a nickname is.
Another point to add, a main reason they will keep calling it a nickname is that some of the diminutives barely seem to bear any relation to the formal name. Alexander somehow turns into “Sasha”? 😅 can you blame people for thinking it’s a totally separate nickname
@@dpend probably the most magnificent English example would be Richard turning into Dick.
You literally described the definition of what a nickname is in a comment saying that it's not a nickname. Incredible.
How is jjakji great ? Or even oz / Youngyakov when some nicknames who are completely fine are in bad or "pick a new one".
Very accurate.
Disagree a little with Serral and Zanster.
edit: btw HeroMarine is bad too (hehehe)
Artosis did this once, I think he only looked at SC1 names.
8:30 small correction, - Vanya is the shortname for Ivan, not a nickname.
@Harstem a nickname clown related that I use on the European region is ClownPrince, if herO used that I would be honoured
Not including Idra, WhiteRa, iNcontroL, Grubby, Naniwa is the warcrime!
Vanya is "short" version of Ivan, many russian names have that: Vladimir>>Vova, Vyacheslav>>Slava etc.
Am I blind, or is there no Heromarine?
I feel like you should look at the Korean translation for the Korean player names. Like Maru translates to High Peak, or Byun translates to "in a hurry"
I know women that pay a lot of money to have lips as lucious as yours
It's hypnotic, the "my eyes are up here" kinda thing
Harstem could you do it for SC1? It would be awesome for brood war fans, especially because you don't know most of the players, so there will be no bias, you will just evaluating nicks. In SC1 the nicks were something new at that time, and some players were very creative, and capitalization actually mattered very much (dunno why u hate it so much). Some of them include: Mondragon, Testie, IdrA, Assem, Artosis, ElkY, Grrrr..., FisheYe, BrEaKdOwN, Schnibl0r, kolllll, Legionnaire, Androide, Advokate, Christian, MidiaN, Blackman, Draco, SunCow, Dreiven, ParanOid, AvernuM, and ofc the koreans: (here often clan tag plays a big role): SlayerS_`BoxeR`, [ReD]NaDa, iloveoov, XellOs[yG], FlaSh, SnOw, Nal_rA, [Oops]Reach, Bisu[Shield], GARIMTO, IntoTheRain (and IntoTheRainBOw), [NC]...YellOw, ChOJJa, Jaedong, sAviOr[gm], ShinHwA, JulyZerg, etc. etc. (for full list of nicks you could check in on sc:bw liquipedia, or ask some of the sc1 pros or scene enthusiasts, mb Artosis or someone) Oh there are so many awesome nicks, players and memories. I'd love to see you rank them (and I think many people, which come from broodwar would agree with me)...
Edit: Hell, you could even do it with clantags, some of the best and good looking [foreign scene] were imo: ToT)nick( - Templars of Twillight , nick[pG] - proGamers, MgZ)nick - MicroGamerZ, MYM.nick - MeetYourMakers, iG. - (i dont remember). But those were sponsored teams, which was a very rare thing in broodwar _foreign_ scene.
for the first 2 min i thought he was going to rate nicknames "the captain, the professor, danish prince" etc. and then he started with "firefly" lol. oh.
