    Hey Ryan, I am not sure that AC is exhausting as well as you think. If you created a more airtight seal between the exhaust tube and ceiling fan, I think you would notice the air conditioning a lot more in the van! AC units put a lot of heat out of those tubes and the non-perfect exhaust set up may be contributing to raising the temperature of your van!

      @FadeRunnerOG ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah at first there was like a 2 inch gap that isnt doing much venting i think if he sealed it it would be significantly better

      Insulating the exhaust tube helps a lot as well

      His black van isn't properly insulated to being with. If you all never been inside of a cargo van in the summer it's like you're in a oven. In the winter it's like you're in a freezer. And as you all stated his A/C exhaust tube isn't insulated nor that it's sealed at the above vent. Then his windows in the cabin area aren't covered. He's parked on the black asphalt in the open with his van absorbing all of the sun rays.

      The actual issue is that the hot side intake is not connected to the outside. This means that the air it is exhausting is being replaced by hot air from outside. Even if you sealed it properly, it would still come in through the doors and other random cracks. He needs to hook up the intake of the hot side to pull air in from outside as well. That way, the air used to cool the hot side will be taken from and returned to the outside. If he did that, that thing would be more than enough to cool the van.

      @@mikea2458while having both hoses hooked up would help, I don’t think that small AC is powerful enough for that van. I have a Sprinter Van with 8000BTU AC properly sealed & vented and it barely keeps the van comfortably cool with outside temps over 90 at night. His AC is probably 4000BTU, and would not cool down the whole van with those outside temps.

    Ryan when you are driving and have the air conditioner running, open up the curtain and close the front air vent, then turn on the rear vent fan to blow out. This will create a vacuum thus cooling off the whole van. After some time of driving close that rear vent. You'll be surprised at how cool it will get while you continue to drive. Not sure why your min air isn't putting out like it should Not sure the BTU's but maybe an upgrade is an answer. It should cool the whole van. See you down the road !

      I’ll add that if it gets too hot, just run the best AC you have, the one installed by the factory. If running diesel, it will only use around 500 ml of fuel per hour. So, around 1 gallon of gas for roughly 6-7 hours of idle.

    • @justinkase1360
      @justinkase1360 ปีที่แล้ว

      It seems he runs tge fans a lot, moving air out that's already somewhat cooled. The AC will never catch up if you are constantly doing that. Obviously tgat pulls in outside 100 degree plus air.

Please keep it up, I have been confined to one location my whole life and it has been a real treat to see the world through your eyes, I hope I can get out there myself one day.
    On a side note salt lowers the freezing temperature of water and causes the ice to melt creating very cold water to bring the temperature of the ice cream below freezing very quickly.

    We have a van and although it has a 12v A/C that we can run off batteries it can keep the van cool if we start the A/C after we have been driving. Try this, get your van as cool as you can with the dash A/C, then when you get where you are going, start your portable A/C, let both run for a few minutes, then stop your van, put your window covers up, and see if that helps you out some. This has worked pretty good here in Texas so it should work well for you in California.

Our home is not insulated well, so it has gotten up to 95+ degrees in our kitchen and I just couldn't stand to cook in there, I stuck w/my salads which were already pre-made...I don't know how you do that at all!

    Pro Tip:
    You can buy insulated ducting to connect the exhaust to the outside vent. That reduces the amount of heat that exchanges off that ducting back into the van.
    Also, if you can suspend the unit off the roof (inside) you can greatly reduce the length of the exhaust duct, which will further reduce that exchange while also reducing the flow resistance.
    I used the same unit for a summer and those two steps GREATLY improved my cooling efficiency.

  • @Nobody0512

    The silver sunshades for windshields would do the trick , attach them by push studs on roof while camping overnight , reflects the heat while parked as that morning sun can be brutal ..unbutton them before driving .. even if ya forget em they are only $10 to replace , should do the trick and keep Van a LOT cooler , done this before and made van a lot cooler in Australia 😁😁

    Did a road trip from Vancouver Island all the way down the west coast through Washington Oregon and California and turned around at San Diego with the GF for 2 weeks camping out of the back of my pickup truck under the canopy. Cannot believe how tedious it was to find overnight parking in California. We really had no plan so whenever we were tired we'd look to stay somewhere, was very annoying trying to find somewhere to say in the populated cities like you mentioned. Washington/Oregon was easy AF but RIP Cali.

    Similar to sugar, salt affects how water freezes and effectively lowers the freezing/melting point of water. Creating a saltwater slush and packing this around our ice cream base allows us to cool the base enough so that it starts to thicken and freeze before the ice melts completely.

    you are remarkably adaptable in those high California temperatures, esp in regard to getting most out of the micro a/c, eating cold salads. i would be tempted to stay at a motel til conditions got cooler but that’s expensive. having to drive for hours to find better conditions is waste of resources & tiring. parking in large shade-less car park i find depressing - may as we’ll be home.
    my experience of surviving driving long distances in hot dry Australian summer conditions >100F have been to 1) keep driving with windows partly down for draft or windows fully closed (if air con) 2) find quiet shady bush spot away from highway to doze, opening all windows & doors to get breeze 3) look for next local swimming pool or even a roadside creek to cool off, often easier said than done 4) stopover early say 4pm at (pref) air con motel.

  • @nunocardeiro
    @nunocardeiro ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly, even in some place under a bridge. Although I live in an European country, I guess the parking problem is not as severe. Even RV's like the least stealth option, can park whatever without issue.
    You can sleep in your car also, no legislation. It's even encouraged, since there's quite a few awareness of accidents for sleeping on the wheel.
    Even for professional drivers it's the other way around. Professional vehicles, specially trucks and buses have a system where the vehicle won't start without a driver disk. That disk is granted to professional divers and records very specific time schedules like you can't drive 4 hours straight without a stop, no driving more than 8 hours on a span of 16 Hours etc.

    TL:DR: Connect the other duct for your air-conditioner and it should cool much better
    Long Answer: Just a tip from an Engineer: These devices pump air and pump energy (heat). In the cold part, your ambient air is sucked, the device takes heat from it, and it sends back the air (now cool) to the ambient. In the hot part, it should take air (from the outside of your van or house), put the heat from the other side, plus the heat generated by the machine, and send the air back to the outside.
    Your air-conditioner is taking the air it just cooled, to heat and send outside. Put the other tube for outside air intake, and, if you can, isulate the ehxaust tube. It would also help if you're able to shorten these tubes, putting the air-conditioner next to the passage of air.... I hope it's cooled down a bit, thank you for your vídeos!

    the salt makes the ice melt faster, like when you put salt on icy streets in winter. the thermal energy of the melting ice has to go somewhere and goes into the milk, which should let it freeze.
    PS isn´t the pipe that goes the the window of your van the intake of the AC unit?

    My friends have a Sprinter Van with solar and AC and they say it gets Ice cold in their van. I guess some people understand their needs and plan accordingly. There AC is built into the roof. And they mainly travel back and forth through the lower southern states, top edge of Florida, Louisiana, Texas, New, Mexico, Arizona, Southern California and then return to Kansas City for Nov, Dec and January. They work during the night as IT Security experts remotely and then sleep and or travel during the hot daylight hours. Something like that. But, I think their Sprinter Van is 2x times as big as this van in this video maybe. I don't know.

    Always wondered about the insulation of living in a van. I know some custom box truck conversions big enough to not care if its parked in direct sunlight. But a small van probably isn't ideal for super hot weather.

    You drove through Sacramento in the first driving Montage so you were not yet in Central California "heat" yet when you woke up! Sacramento is usually considered the very top of the valley.

    Salt lowers the freezing temperature of water, allowing it to reach even lower temperatures than 32 before it freezes. Works wonders in the service industry to chill that bottle of white wine in a few minutes!

    Love your videos Ryan! I know exactly where you spent the night at the truck stop. I drove by to get gas and I had a feeling that was your van! I didn't want to bug you though when you were packing up your van. Sorry it is hotter than heck here in Central Cal! Safe travels!

    These videos are over way too quick! lol. Your vids are so relaxing and the perfect thing to watch when you just wanna' chill and kick back. I do have a question though...What happened to the "EPowerGo" AC/heater that you got in an earlier vid? I'm mostly asking out of curiosity. That machine seemed like it'd be the perfect thing when it's that hot in the back of the van.

    wonder in a new build like a uhaul, if you were to incorporate some duct work that would be a cool way to cool off the area

    Repaint your van to white. Black attracts more heat.

    Hwy Ryan. In a past episode, you said you might do a series like you did the Alaska series. What about driving the Baja peninsula? Driving all the way down to los cabos would be sweet. That is somwthing that I would like to do one day.

    I picked up the zero breeze from your oldddd video talking about it, last year or what not, and yeah, 100% makes the heat tolerable in the van!!! Good beta homie!
