    Another thing that would help me to know concerns the direction my windows face. Many other videos and tutorials say, for example, "place the plant about a foot away from a north-facing window." What if, for example, I live in an apartment with only south- and west-facing windows? Sun still comes in and I can calculate the hours the light is available but I assume the "strength" of the light is different from all directions. Thanks. I am another fan of your videos.

      Light is the most important but least understood concept for plants. I want to give people a concrete way to know if they are getting the light right. As such, one may come to face the reality that their space cannot support hundreds of plants!

    Cool T-shirt! Also, great information. I killed a fatsia japonica thinking I could leave it somewhere very sunny if I increased watering, the poor thing just stopped drinking and died very quickly 😔 if there were more similar sized or bigger plants around it then it would have probably sought a bit of shade from them but I ignorantly had it surrounded by seedlings. Interestingly, I’ve had a small avocado tree for a year and a half now getting near zero sunshine but has constant indirect light and it’s grown at least 3 feet so far with huge, healthy leaves! And the best ever - a calathea rufibarba, notoriously fussy, has been quite strong near (but not beside) a north facing window here in Ireland. It got a bit of draught damage in its previous spot but bounced back. It would definitely prefer more light as it’s underside isn’t so dark red as it could be but it’s been happily drinking, “waking & sleeping” and slowly growing in its current home.

    • @HousePlantJournal
      @HousePlantJournal  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The complication is the fact that the sun moves across the sky but the sky itself provides the indirect light. You want maximum view of the sky BUT IF the sun comes into the view for LONGER than 2-3 hours, block it with a white sheer curtain. Understanding this complication is key.

    Very informative, thank you! Can you do a video about darkness as well? How much do the plants need, minimum and maximum? I have a street light directly outside of my apartment window that turns on at night. Does that mean I should not put plants in that window? I also live in Scandinavia, which means the variation in hours of light is very big depending on the season. How does that effect my plants? Do I need to take any special considerations? Thank you!
