    1. Buy yourself a pack of instant coffee and deal with it.
    2. Carry a 2L tumbler refilled at home, i think thats enough water for a day.
    3. Instant foods doesnt cost more, your hunger and appetite is so eat the right foods.
    4. Buy fruits and veggies on local produce and what u can just consume in a short span of time.
    5. Look out for the best deals at the grocery, ofc, just the things you needed.
    6. Invest on things and utensils that last longer.

    Better than Tupperware: reusing glass jars. Because they're usually made for holding liquid, they seal very well for soups or other juicy foods.

    • @bsarioz
      @bsarioz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      They tend not work too well for holding sandwiches or leftover foods. But you can always use old plastic containers from yogurt, sour cream, ricotta and so on.
      If you can pay like 20 bucks, Pyrex that you can fit in each other work really well for freezing, heating in the oven and microwaving.

      @jalalshahini 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the sad thing is, it doesn't really matter. I just give you one example. If all people in my town stop using their cars for a day, it still has less effect on the environment than the take off of a fighter jet for a routine patrol in a pointless war. this whole being environmentally conscious narrative is used to shift the blame from big corporations who actually benefit from destroying the earth to you and me who forgot to recycle once or have to use our car because we can't find a working alternative. and most importantly to make us feel we are doing enough if we are indeed environmentally conscious and have a green life style and not bother forcing them to cut 0.001 percent of their profits to invest in a more green production or whatever.

    Just a head's up, something to keep in mind about pre-cut fruit is that while it does cost more, some people have disabilities that mean they can't cut the fruit. I do agree though, that people who can cut fruit themselves shouldn't waste money on something they don't need.

    • @ingerfalch-jacobsen1717
      @ingerfalch-jacobsen1717 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And some people don't have internet access, so they don't even get to see this video. Better preemptively avoid every imaginable exception, which is not possible. People, as in most people, don't buy "convenience products" because they have to, not even because they're lazy, but because they think it saves them time/money/effort, and because it makes them feel hip and cool and busy and important.

    • @bsarioz
      @bsarioz 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think, most people already know about this. But if the pre-cut fruits and vegetables were only bought by people with arthritis, we wouldn't see nearly as much on display.

    • @cassied.6731
      @cassied.6731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @L H I actually completely forgot about this video, seeing as I watched it and commented about a year ago.
      I think buying uncut fruit is a perfectly valid way that makes sense to save money, and because it isn't cut you often aren't dealing with extra, environmentally unfriendly packaging.
      If I'm remembering correctly, at the time I watched this I was running into tons of people who were hating on things like plastic straws and cut fruit and judging the people who purchased them for their environmentally awful decisions. While this video approached the topic well, not hating on the people buying the cut fruit, the comment section wasn't necessarily the same. The comment wasn't a comment for the guy who made the video, more for the people watching it.
      As someone with a disability myself, I get a bit frustrated at people hating on things that disabled people often need. Of course, I don't think you, or anyone else who replied to my comment, was hating in any way. Your comments were fair and brought up good points. This is just where my head was at the time, and the way I continue to feel about this subject.

    • @cassied.6731
      @cassied.6731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @L H That's true, which is why we should look for eco-friendly alternatives. Plastic is bad for the planet, but we don't have readily-available eco-friendly alternatives at this point that disabled people can use. A lot of the alternatives work a lot better for able-bodied people than for those who have limitations.
      However, the unfortunate reality about pollution, particularly things like plastics, is that overwhelmingly the main contributors to it are huge corporations. Plastic is so cheap to make and use that it's more expensive to recycle it than it is to make new plastic. This isn't me being all "look at the evil capitalist corporations," theres actual research that shows that corporations like Coca-Cola are contributing by far the most to the plastic pollution situation, as well as pollution as a whole. Things like straws are practically nothing in comparison. We should still try to reduce our plastic waste as much as possible - individual circumstances permitting - But no meaningful change can ever truly happen until some of these corporations remember that if they actually want to succeed long-term at this point the planet needs to be around and healthy enough for them to do so.

    • @cassied.6731
      @cassied.6731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @L H Plastichas been widely used for about the last 150 years. During that time (not even talking about before then) disabled people were a bit busy dying and having harmful medical procedures (for a while there people though lobotomies and electricity could fix anything) forced on them. We didn't have a lot of the diagnoses and treatments that we have now, so we were literally just dying. It's only very recently that disabled people have shifted from "How do we survive," to "How de we survive with decent quality of life." A lot of plastic things aren't necessarily essential to survival, but for disabled people many plastic things are essential to decent quality of life.
      Here's an example: someone has mobility and joint issues. These could be caused by many things, not just arthritis or old age. They can't consistently drink anything without spilling on themselves and, if they have some sort of spasm or jerky movement on their face they can't control, one of the reusable straws could break their teeth or break in their mouths, meaning they need to somehow get all the pieces out with hands that don't work all that well, without injuring themselves or swallowing anything. Or, they could just use a soft straw. The only reusable option is silicone, which they can't clean with their barely-finctional hands, so they need plastic straws.
      Here's another example: somebody commonly has muscle spasms. This could be a short-term or long-term problem, and maybe either every day is severe or, like how if is for menay people, they have good days and bad days. On the bad days their hands shake and move too much to drink anything without spilling, and their jaw and face will sometimes spasm as well, causing their mouth to involuntarily close or have difficulty opening. For the same reason as above, they do need plastic straws.
      Both of these people, to survive, could alternatively have someone around to help them drink and eat and take care of them, or if that's too hands-on you could leave them hooked up to an IV. Or they could be given things like plastic straws so they can actually live their lives and do some things independently. Needing help isn't a bad thing, but nothing is more frustrating than needing help with something you could do yourself if you had the resources.

    Top tip for cutting your own fruit:
    When you’ve finished, pour or squeeze some lemon juice or other natural acidic additive over it and shake to coat (citrus is your best bet) as the acidity prevents the fruit from browning over the course of the day through exposure to the air. Keeps your fruit fresh, keeps it from drying out as quickly, and adds some flavour.

      i heat my thermos with scalding hot h2o from the tap and after breakfast the remaining coffee goes into it. haven't bought coffee at work in a few years. my co-worker does the same but she calculated the cost of coffee shop drinks per week - starbucks reared its head on the first floor of our building a few years back. she puts her coffee money in a coffee can beside her microwave at home and counts it out at the end of the year. she had barely over a grand after the year - starbucks ain't cheap: $5 daily x 5 day work week = $25.
      when i see young people like nate GETTING IT i'm relieved. there's hope for the species yet.

    Something to consider (particularly with anything ready made, pre-prepped, instant, etc) consider the amount of time it takes to make the item compared to the amount of extra money it cost you. Your time is worth money and if 90 second instant oatmeal in the morning takes less time and allows you to be on time, it could be worth it.

    For being so young you are so wise. Wish I knew all this when I was 21!
    I agree with most of what you said, except I do think there are exceptions to some things. 1) Bottled water: I cannot drink city tap water. All the stuff they add to the water messes with my stomach and makes me sick. But since we moved to the mountains and have well, we only have bottled water for power outages. 2) precut foods. I have family members w fibomyalgia, and there are some days they are in to much pain to cut up fruits and veggies. There are other disabilities that also make it hard to do bulk food prep.
    My husband and I buy our beef/pork from a resturant supply and cut it up ourselves. Saves anywhere from $2-$8lb. We started raising/processing our own chickens. Definately not cheaper, but so much healthier. We buy bulk dry goodsand portion it ourselves. Use cloth towels instead of paper for most things, and buy a lot of store brands. We are working on cutting as many chemicals and preservatives from our diet as possible.

    I recommend to everyone to look for a farmers market in big cities (usually on WE-Days; Wellington one was every Sunday next to a museum). I spend between 40-50 NZ$ total on groceries every week.
    That was only half as much as if I had shopped everything at chain markets (like New world & Countdown ~ 110NZ$ = 73US$ per week).
