  • A lens that is little-known, yet still quite popular on eBay, even fetching higher prices than the Mark 2 version. This is the original Canon 50mm lens that came out when the EOS camera system first came out. How does it stack up against the two newer versions of the lens?

    I got myself the new STM version, and it's fantastic value for money! But what i like about this veteran lens is this focus window - not only it is useful but also looks cool :)

    I picked up one of these at a pawn shop for $40. For the money I like it a lot, but when I used it for some casual pictures at an afternoon outdoor party I found that it really would have benefitted from a lens hood. I had a lot more flaring in final pictures than I remembered day-of. Otherwise it works fine on my crop-sensor 77D. I do have to keep reminding myself to back up from my subjects though.

    If you are so lucky as to have one of these Canon first generation EF 50mm f/1.8 lenses, FOTGA's Screw Mount 52mm Standard Metal Lens Hood (available at Amazon) can be used to mitigate the flaring problem. Canon's first generation Mark I 50mm f/1.8 lenses were made with no provision for a bayonet-mount lens hood. A collapsible rubber hood with a flexible screw-in mount used to be attached my copy of this lens, but it had an unfortunate propensity for slipping the threads and falling off. The FOTGA Screw Mount Hood screws directly into the filter thread and makes an attractive addition to the lens. The hood is threaded inside to capture stray rays and lessen glare and flare. The original 52mm lens cap is too small to fit the threads on the open end of the hood, but a 55mm lens cap fits correctly. Installing screw-in hoods is a bit slower than bayonet mount hoods, but this is a good choice when a thread-mounted hood is the only option.

    I found this lens in a box at a relative's house a few years ago. It had some dust caked on the glass and it is still a little dirty on the inside, but I'm pretty happy with it. Best lens I've ever gotten for free.

    I currently use this lens with a 70d. It's worth mentioning that I accidentally dropped the lens from about waist height onto a hard floor. It bounced once and there are no signs of damage and it's still working fine. In comparison I used to have the current mk2 50mm which managed to get squashed and fall apart in my camera bag - and not under any extreme circumstances. So in terms of build quality alone I highly recommend this lens.

    Just picked one of these up an hour and a half ago. Local pawn shop had one for $40, along with a UV filter and a rubber/collapsible lens hood. I hadn't planned on getting a 50mm for my APS-C 77D but for the money I simply could not pass it up, and comparing its low-light performance with the 24mm f/2.8 pancake lens it definitely can get better results. It's interesting that I can mount and fully control lens manufactured 31 years ago in 1988 on a camera manufactured last year in 2018.

    Hey Chris,
    Thanks for making this video. I found it very helpful. I just wish the STM wasn’t focus by wire. This makes focus pulling difficult for video work because each take has a different outcome. I guess it’s better dual pixel autofocus though. I thought I might’ve purchased a bad mark 1 because of the focus ring, but your video was reassuring since this lens was made in 1987.

    What an awesome, thorough review - thanks! I had the mkii version as my only lens for years but sold it. Now looking at either a used mark i, the stm, or just springing for the 1.4... hmm.

      I have the mk1 F1.8 and some people have compared it as equally sharp as the 1.4Lwhen stopped down but I don't own that one so I can't prove it but if you buy the 1.4 we can compare pics

    I have an original 1.8 with the same date stamp. I was considering upgrading to the 1.4 but considering its just about as old, I might just upgrade to the STM and save my money for a 1.2 some day in the far off future.

    Is this lense suitable for fashion/outfit photos with landscapes or buildings in the background? If not, what would you recommend instead with a budget of under 300€ as I'm a beginner? :)

      +Melissa Dahmen If you're using an APS-C camera then try the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 ART or 35mm f/1.4 ART, which is a little sharper but more expensive

      I think I talk about that in the video - it's got a better focus ring and stronger build quality

    • @CoroaEntertainment
      @CoroaEntertainment 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@christopherfrost Metal mount for the mk1 vs plastic for the mk2. The STM version has a better overall plastic build quality than the mk2, and it comes with a metal mount like the mk1. It's kinda like the 1&2 got together and had a kid. The STM also has a faster/quieter focus than the 1&2 which is better when shooting video.
