I'm glad that I found your channel. I was struggling to grow orchids because I was doing a few things that wouldn't go well in Florida. Your videos are very informative. Now one of my orchids is pushing 2 flower spikes for the first time. Thank you!

It was nice to see the bromeliads at the end of the video! I only have about two years of orchid care experience so far and I live in Connecticut so it's been a little challenging figuring out what works.
If it makes it feel any better, it took my years just to learn how to bloom my first orchid. That’s what makes them special. Once you learn how to grow them, that’s when the collections usually take off. Happy growing and never give up. Make the journey part of the experience of your orchid passion.
@@naturenel Hardest thing for me so far is repotting with the right mix for home growing conditions in Connecticut. I think I killed alot of orchids last year with hydrogen peroxide on the roots. I already got two NoIDs to rebloom but it takes forever with colder temperatures.
I have begun following you again (time was not on my side) only to find you're worse on me now. My teeny tiny orchid garden is just beginning to flourish, in that I got a lot of blooms from Oct/Nov and is only now petering out. My dendrobiums came out full blast, and the phals are as overzealous as ever. I now need a huge favour from you - can you send me one of every orchid you own? (Yeah right!!). Keep on keeping it green!!
It sounds like you an amazing terrible incredible thing to happen to your orchids. lol!!!!! I’m happy to hear your orchids are bouncing back. To your last question…..NOPE! 😂
wow that cymbidium. I have a similar looking one flowering at mine, all the same parents, just yours has Cym. madidum added too. But yeah I was impressed with my 35 flowers and then you show your beast here putting mine in the shadows. Very impressive. Mine is still a lot smaller than yours so there is hope but that is still something mine will never manage to beat in my gloomy uk bathroom window I don't think.
Thanks Tom. You know ever since I repoted in New Zealand Spag Moss with packaging bits at the bottom in a cattleya pot, my Cymbidiums have taken off. They can be pretty finicky with watering as I’m sure you know. But this year my Gino’s Gem is showing off. Can’t wait for the other 3 spikes to bloom. I’m hoping the other flowers hold until the rest have opened. I also fed it last year allot. That may have helped push out more spikes.
@@naturenel I have noticed you have been fertilizing well - at least I suspected as much seeing the vigor in your plants and me having decided to try experimenting more too and getting similar results. It shows .I've already mentioned you have helped me more with that showing what other growers you know do aswell. Keep it up. I can't tell you how much I appreciate you help others grow orchids too.
Oh I noticed your Schilleriana has huge skies and bulbs ready to open. Mine has three spikes with bulbs and some blooms but the plant looks terrible. Maybe exhausted from all that happening?
Nelson, I have followed your previous feeding schedule and I want to try this new one that you recommend, but I must be sure how to do it... do we only give them that monthly food and the rest of the necessary times that we must hydrate them, only water? Thanks 🤗
Yes. I’m only watering every other day and sometimes every 3 to 4 days if it’s wet outside. In summer I do water daily. It’s too hot. As far as feeding I start with a very low feeding at half the recommended dosage 1/2 tsp to gal of water. After a month of that initial feeding, I feed monthly at 1 tsp. To a gallon. That’s mainly for 20-20-20 and cal mag, and Super Thrive. For epson salt I do 2 tsp per gall.
Hey your "Kingianum" is a hybrid. It's called Dendrobium Jonathan's 'dark joy' its a complex hybrid perfect for florida while some of its parents like kingianum are great for the cooler coast of america. Kingianum does need to go doen in temperatures to spike while 'dark joy' lives like your other dendrobiums as it is a very strong and nice mix.
That’s awesome. I believe it came from Maria. I have no idea. I did find a tag the said Den. kingianum. So I figured it may have come from that one. Thanks for the identification.
@@naturenel I would love to share another tip with you about tolumnia. They thrive on just pure water and humidity. Feed them lightly and seldomly. Imagine growing on small twigs and thin branches which are semi new. The orchid doc has a great video of Tolumnia in the wild in Jamaica you know her. They are small plants and they don't need much. Since your collection is small there is an ebay sellar Named: Imported Orchids aka Angelstradesunlimited They are selling tolumnia 4 a piece and if you buy 8-12 you will get different ones and they happen to sometimes send extra seedlings of other kinds of orchids. If my collection ever dies or needed to be restarted I would order 16-20+ from them. You will get all forms of jairak tolumnia.
Believe it or not I use the same method as my Phalaeonopsis. I do use a terracotta pot with slits on the sides to give more drainage. I add packing bits to the bottom of the pot, then I presoak New Zealand moss in water and use that as the main medium. Water loosely. I let it dry out in between watering a. I never water if the moss is wet. Same for a Phals. Also feed in Spring and Summer. That will help it with next years blooms. The food is only to make the plant stronger in order to produce more blooms at its blooming season. It’s not going to bloom out of season if you feed it more. I made the rocky mistake in the beginning. I would feed for blooms and was always disappointed. If you can use rain water in your fertilizer or well water that would be extra bonus.
Sorry. Most phals don’t have tags. They get their phals from Thailand where they are constantly creating all sorts of crosses. But since there are so many, they don’t register a name for each Phal. It’s very time consuming and expensive for large growing. The great part about that is sometimes you come across something so unique and out of this world beautiful with if all the crosses. Chances are you may not see it again once the entire stock of seedlings are sold. It takes 4 to 5 years to grow from seed to blooming size. If the grower decides to bring back a specific cross, it may take years before you see it again. Many times thy don’t repeat the cross. Only the ones that are the most popular because they sell fast at big box stores. That’s why it’s so exciting for me to collect specialty cross standard phals.
I switch everything to New Zealand Spag Moss. Plus I have been adding styrofoam packaging bits at the bottom of the pots for more drainage. That helps allot. Plus remember to feed throughout Spring and Summer.
Nope. It’s called no time to repot. lol! I normally like to repot in terracotta with Spag Moss from New Zealand. I also place some styrofoam packing bits at bottom of pot for extra drainage. If you like to water often, try using a cattleya terracotta pots with the slits on the side for more drainage.

Only the ones that are the most popular because they sell fast at big box stores. That’s why it’s so exciting for me to collect specialty cross standard phals.
What type of medium you use for your phals? My phal s do not produce big and so many buds. Thanks.
I switch everything to New Zealand Spag Moss. Plus I have been adding styrofoam packaging bits at the bottom of the pots for more drainage. That helps allot. Plus remember to feed throughout Spring and Summer.
Hi most of your potted phals are in the plastic pots and then put into clay. Grow better?
Nope. It’s called no time to repot. lol! I normally like to repot in terracotta with Spag Moss from New Zealand. I also place some styrofoam packing bits at bottom of pot for extra drainage. If you like to water often, try using a cattleya terracotta pots with the slits on the side for more drainage.
Hi Nel, where did you get that Lychee tree?
