Basic orchid care: re-potting oncidiums!

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 17 ส.ค. 2024
- This week Plant Lovers, a favourite Oncidium type orchid of mine is in need of a re-pot - Beallara Eurostar - so I thought it was a great opportunity to make another basic Oncidium re-pot video! In this video we'll look at some different types of Oncidium type hybrids, the sort most easily found in hardware stores, nurseries and florists, and the differing growth habits mine have. We'll look at my preferred re-potting method, but of course there are many ways to pot and grow these types of orchids so find the best method that works for you and your climate.
If you want to find the species ancestor of your hybrid orchid you can here: orchidroots.com/
And if you want to research the species ancestor once you've found it, you can here: www.orchidspeci...
The mycorrhizal fungi I use is this one but google search where ever you are to find a recommended one: biostim.com.au...
I have an Oncidium play list here: • ONCIDIUM ORCHID CARE
Hi Matthew, I Came across your channel a month ago and am so HAPPY!😄 as I live in Melbourne and I love Orchids and have a collection I have been thankfully able to move with me to new rentals. I have been binging your videos every weekend to catch up! 🤣 You have given me the courage to explore trying other types of orchids to grow other than cymbidiums and phalaenopsis. I got some young Cattleya's which have buds on them, so fingers crossed!🤣 You really have reduced the stress level regarding orchids! Thank you so much 🥰 Lisa
Good luck with them all and thanks for finding me!
I have three colmanara Masai Red oncidium that I just adore. They are similar to your Bobcat, but have no yellow and a deeper red. Ninja orchid said it was hands down her favorite orchid in her collection. So I was on the hunt to find it. I just love oncidium! Thank you for this repot video
Thanks for watching it!
Haha! You would run to grab a discount orchid before lockdown, that's amazing and very relatable!! I bought 6 discount phals for the same reason. Silver lining to lockdowns in Canada: the beginning of my orchid obsession
Mine too really! Thanks for watching!
Removing dry sheaths also allows new roots to escape & not grow up quite so much. Very interesting video again. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Good advice for repotting Oncidium now I know how very informative video. Thank you!
Hi Matthew, thanks for this very informative video. I love repot videos. ❤
Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed this! Congrats on 10k 🎉🎉🎉 😊
Thank you for noticing and thanks for watching!
A lovely video to watch after a hard day. Thanks ❤
Thanks for watching!
Motivation video! 😉I started with the most urgent repots yesterday. Often a surprise whats in the pot (good + bad). Here in Europe many of these intergenerics in garden centers, flower shops etc. are just called Cambrias. Many regards!
Thanks for watching!
Hello Matthew and greetings from Finland! I only found you channel a while a go and have been watching your content a lot since then. My growing conditions in Finland are veeeery different from yours, but I have learned so much from you and wanted to say thank you 😀 I just bought my first cymbidium thanks to watching your lovely videos about them - you actually made me feel like I could manage to grow them too. Dreaming about getting an oncidium sotoanum next and yes, that would be influenced by you too. See what you are doing from across the world?? 🤣So there are definite consequences to watching your content, but regardless, I'm looking forward to learning more from you. Absolutely love your channel and your personality, you put a smile on my face. Thank you for that 😃
Well thank you very much for finding me and good luck with the Cymbidium!
Would love to see the monster being repotted.
Yes.....we'll have to get to it!
Excellent video. Thanks for all the information? Loved it.
Thanks for watching!
Mathew, the name on your scissors 张小泉 is the most famous scissors maker. The brand has more than three hundred years . Thank you very much for your share.👍💐
Thank you! I loved their shop in Shanghai!
Wow, those scissors have been made that long ago, that’s very old? What does it mean in English, do you know?
Thank you! Very helpful video. I enjoyed and learned a lot. 🎉
Thanks for watching!
I learned something new today thank you
Thanks for watching!!
Brilliant video. Thank you so much.
Thanks for watching!
I live in Montana, my oncidium was bought in Whashington last year . the pot is covered with tiny holes. It really likes how it is potted. Im scared to repot it. but it is out growing its pot
Don't be scared! Just do it when you see the plant is producing new growths. These will have new roots emerging which will establish themselves into the new potting mix. Good luck!
Thank you. Helpful presentation
Thanks for watching!!
Good info 👍👍
Thanks for watching!!
Thanks for all the amazing vids. Also from melb- What’s your favourite nursery in melb?
Thanks for watching! There aren't that many that ever have orchids! Collectors Corner is the best for range, Fitzroy Nursery will occasionally have a good range of Oncidums and sometimes other genera and Poyntons will sometimes have Australian orchids.
Just in time! My Oncidium (Howeara/Leomesezia) Lava Burst just arrived the other day. Problem is I isolated it but the pesky little mice infiltrated the isolation and ngawed off some leaves and new roots and I just saw it this morning! Not a good way to start the morning, but your videos made my morning a little bit better! 😁💕 happy growing!
Mice!!! What refined taste they have! I hope it recovers!
@@helloplantlovers indeed! I was bummed. So every night I just cage my Howeara Lava Burst in a ventilated container so that it won't be damaged again 😔
@@helloplantlovers Indeed! Really puzzles me on how do they even have the appetite for almost anything!
and yes, thank you! I repotted it and also just brought it closer to me, on top of a chair, so that it's secure and all! 🤣❤️
@@TheVerdantTurfThat's extraordinary! I made a Sarcochilus video with Dan in spring and he had a rat probem, eating the flower spikes of his native orchids!
@@helloplantloversOhh, that's interesting! will definitely check that out! thank you, matthew! 💕
Great show Cutie 😂😂😂
Thanks for watching!
HI LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ,? I am moving to South Carolina i think zone 8 i want to put orchid on a pecan tree what do you think what type of orchid with that crazy weather
Hi there - we don't have the same zonal systems in Australia as you do in the US so I have no idea what challenges your climate may present. Best bet would be to find an orchid group in the area, join that and start chatting to other growers and get their suggestions. Good luck!
I just got a bare root wild cat, Bearcats oncidium. I poted with medium bark and charcoal. Is it a vigorous grower? I put it in a 3 inch pot. Do you think I will have to repot it sooner or later?
Hi there - not a particularly vigorous grower - you will have to repot it eventually though as the medium will break down.
Mattew. Carol here, from Melbourne. Are you thinking of fibonacci? This episode was great. Thanks.
Indeed I was! Thanks for watching!
Hi Matthew, thank you for another very informative video! I always learn a lot. By the way, is the name of the beautiful red flowered Oncidium you showed us at the start of the video a Colmonara "Wild Cat Red Cat"? I would love to acquire one so please advise where you sourced it. I am in Australia.
This was an unlabeled plant. You might try www.redfoxorchids.com.au/
@@helloplantloversThanks very much Matthew.
If you’re repotting an established plant, won’t it already have the desirable microbes living on it and in it?
It should have....but a top up won't hurt!
How on earth do you care for so many plants???
A little loosely!
Matthew, is your slow release fertilizer a non burning formula? Thank you!❤🪴👍
Hi there - it's just a regular slow release. I don't use much and try to avoid putting directly onto any roots which might be damaged by it. So far no issues!
