Fixed my Bambu Lab 3D Printer Upgrade for only a Penny!

  • I solved a filament jamming problem when I tried to install a “Y” adapter for my Bambu Lab X1 Carbon AMS combo 3D printer. The Y adapter upgrade allows you to manually add filament from an external filament spool without disconnecting the AMS Teflon tubing, however the filament kept jamming so I solved the problem by designing and 3D printing a miniature funnel insert. I have also included how I made a clever filament dry box using a cereal box from the “Build It Make It” website that works with the "Y" adapter.

In some of my videos I will share my experiences regarding shop safety. This is based on my knowledge and understanding, however ultimately you are responsible for your own safety so you will need to determine how to properly operate equipment in your shop to maintain your safety. You may want to consider taking some woodworking classes at
your local college or craft center. Some Woodcraft stores around the US also offer classes on woodworking.

One thing that may cause an issue for some is that Bambu PTFE tube has an inside diameter of 2.5mm, they like it a little loose for lower resistance. If you buy PTFE tube elsewhere it may come with a 2mm ID, so if you try to mate the two inside an adapter you may get a ledge that the filament gets hung up on. Not that this was the case for Ken, but something to be aware of for other mods.

    • @ristinnovations

Hi Steve thanks for pointing that out. I have only been using the Bambu Lab Teflon tubing. Thanks for pointing out the difference in tubing ID’s.

I went through the same frustrating selection exercise until I ended with a 2 part flat design with no thread for fittings. These are a hassle to build because you have to do it in the back of the machine, but they don’t get stuck as easily. I was even able to print the two part wye/y adapter flat and at a 45 degree angle so that the layer direction of the inside walls coincided with the direction of the filament path. I also looked at mcmaster carr’s brass wye, but I wasn’t ready to shell out the $25 plus shipping.

I am working a motorized feeder and retractor for the dry box I have so I don't have to separate the filament with my hands. just hit a remote to feed the fifth filament (or 9th :)) it looks like I can do this with a stepper motor and extruder from a creality 3 printer, I think? I have the X1C as my first printer but I am fully invested into this Hobby lol

I had issues with capricorn tubing and the pneumatic fittings on my Ender 5 Plus machines, the fix was to use compression fittings to replace the standard pneumatic ones that come with most Bowden systems, I think the teeth in the pneumatic fittings were slightly deforming the Capricorn tubing and my filament was getting slightly stuck and under extruding, the compression fittings use a small brass collet which fits around the tubing and the fitting compresses that to hold it tight, the advantage is also that I have never had to replace these fittings, the Pneumatic ones needed to be replaced every 5 months or so as the retractions would snap off the teeth.
