Not just my favorite horror film, but my favorite film of all time. Gets better with every viewing.
I was a kid when I watched this movie for the first time. The atmosphere gave me creeps and I loved it. Still does the same thing for me now as an adult and I still love it!
Almost fifty years later, and this is still an all time horror classic! It's been said before, but this is the type of horror movie which modern so-called horror masters wish they could make, because it's still very effective after all these years. It's also one of those films which makes me wish time machines are real, just so i could go back to see how crazy audiences reactions were on this film, specially since everyone back then probably thought it really was based on true story.

When Jay mentioned Grandpa and John Carpenter that reminded me, remember David Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China when he’s an old man? That’s what John Carpenter looks like now!
It's amazing that The Exorcist came out in 73 and Chain Saw was 74, but yet TCM feels more grotesque & sickly
This film set such a precedence for horror with it's grittiness. Still get that same dirty feeling no matter how many times I watch it. Great analysis guys. 👍

I wish more people would mention texas chainsaw massacre two. It's so underrated to me. My fav is the original but the original sequel is a close second and bill moseley is iconic in it as chop top. It may be too like comedic or parody for some people but I love it.
I agree but the drastic and unexpected implemented humor turned a lot of people off, it even took me a few watches before I developed a liking for it...
I'd say if you go into TCM2 without attaching it to the first film it's awesome! Basically as a "stand-alone" film, I think TCM2 is one of the best.
The Cook (Drayton Sawyer) was meant to be the oldest brother. According to the TCM Companion Book, and I believe Jim Siedow who played the Cook, mentions this as well in the documentary "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Family Portrait".

I saw an interview with Gunnar Hansen & he said he purposely went crazy swinging the chainsaw around in that final scene because Tobe Hooper was right off screen & he wanted to freak him out. I believe he said he came close to actually hitting him a couple of times & Hooper was pissed.

The original scared the bejesus out of me. That shot of Leatherface slamming that metal sliding door shut freaked me out more than anything

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974 is how horror movies should be made. Raw and real.
When a horror film is cinematic, I get immersion breaking at that point. It’s too Hollywood, and then it becomes entertainment and it’s weird because yes, I enjoy horror films as entertainment with Friday the 13th and Halloween but TCM just went there with realism.
The film is truly a masterpiece in horror, I think. And yeah the sets were bad but you gotta admit, you won’t get anything like this again.

I will admit that I did enjoy some of the TCM sequels…but the first movie seems like it can’t be beat. Lightning in a bottle type of situation with all the points you guys made.

I remember watching this when I was 8 years old. And afterwards my grandma was telling me that it was a true story and she has been to Travis County, Texas. Me as a kid thinking she was the surviving girl in the end. Lol
i rented this movie when i was a kid and my friends and i were freaked out !!! thank you for your review !!!!!
Thr scene with the grandfather also made me question whether they knew something about longevity through their habits, obviously morally inexcusable, but it made you think, oh does this make you live longer?
That dinner table scene is beyond uncomfortable for me, I can never sit still while it's on.
This one seemed more like a documentary than a movie it was like it really happened in real life I think that's what made it scary I think that's how they need to do the other ones
All the actors worked in the extreme heat and worked around real roadkill. 😳 A lot of them got sick and were traumatized because of the conditions. It was so bad the woman who played the girl on the meat hooks stopped acting and won't talk about the movie. I could feel the grossness. It's mentally difficult to watch. It's my all time favorite horror movie still. I can also say driving through Central Texas scared the absolute crap out of me as a kid because of these movies.

Got to visit the house (which is now a cafe in another location), and the gas station the other day (went there twice in 3 days). Recommend visiting those locations if you can - the gas station is actually having a Weird Science cast reunion at the end of the month. Joe Bob and Darcy are going to be there (along with some other special guests). Sounds fun, but I'm going back home in a few days.

My Mother saw the film in 74 and says the only thing she remembers was Sally screaming constantly and it ruined it for her. Otherwise, she liked it.

I really like this movie. I remember watching some of it with a friend years ago and she thought the dinner scene was hilarious while I was horrified.
The Hills Have Eyes 2 is the one where they use the women to breed. The sequel to the 2006 remake❤️❤️❤️

Gunpowder he burned the pic.And yes Domonik Brass or something he was the guy from Friday 5 the fat guy who gets chopped up. But the real fucked up thing is that Feldman remained friends with the guy. And he actually made a cop comedy movie and casted that guy who molested Haim. And he had already casted Haim. So knowing what he knew, he casted Haim to work with the guy who fucked his life up and made him work with him for a job. Some friend huh? Yeah they weren't as good friends as ppl thought. They were for a short time. But Feldman has been dragging Haim's corpse around now to make money off it. He actually wanted to film Haim's wake for the finale of their reality series for the end. And seriously there's so much fucked up shit Feldman did to his "BFF". So many lies. He was actually really jealous that Haim was getting his roles. I watched the truth about them and it's really fucked.

They probably all just agreed to a small amount and then when the movie with more successful than any of them thought it would be they were just pissy that they didn't get a bigger piece of the pie so they decided to slander those involved

and the movie makes you want to take a show after the 1st time you see it and I HAVE NEVER felt like that with any other Horror movie and i've seen ALOT of Horror movies. Jay gets it it's got a Real Ness or as we us't to say Greetyness Movies now just can't get even with tons and mean TONS of blood.

First saw TCM 74 when was young, really freaked me out, love the film though, a great horror film. But always felt bad for Franklin, always thought he had special needs, and the others abandoned him, did want him to survive though.
I don’t know why they had Sally treat him like such shit, like she really wanted to leave him there all alone with no flashlight or nothing, I always wondered was there a reason for that,like a deeper meaning or something
It freaks people out but what's more disturbing is this movie is based on a real life event that happened in Texas

What if when the girl gets in the back of the truck and the film "ends", we never see her again because that truck is yet another member of the family and that idea J brought up about her never making it out comes true? Like every time she escapes, we just keep seeing how big the influence of the Sawyer family is get bigger and bigger. The ending of the movie doesn't give a hopeful feeling to it and while many horror movies don't, this one gives a different kinda vibe to why there is no hope. Almost like there was no real ending to it. I think it'd be terrifying just to see that pick-up truck somehow belong to the Sawyers and all that hope that the girl may have had, especially after her psychological break, come crashing down once more and maybe this finally being the time where she dies or worse.
For me, in this particular movie and watching it all how it played out, I prefer the happy ending

I'm a long time horror fan(basicly since childhood)and I watched TCM for the first time today. The movie made me feel gross and it was sadic at times, I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one who felt like that lol
For the year it was made and the budget I can understand why so many call it a classic now. You don't get to see movies like these being made today, maybe due to political correctness or who knows. Not saying I enjoyed it or something, but I can respect it for what it is.

Just saying. "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is, without a doubt, the best movie title ever. It's not really the word 'chainsaw', or even 'massacre'. A game I have played with my friends: Try using any other place name in the title other than 'Texas'. For some reason absolutely no other location on earth has the same impact. Why is that?....... Try it!

The oldest brother doesn't have the heart to kill. But he tried to warn them about going to the house. And that's what really started it. The oldest brother controls his two goon brothers and he ket them know that they were at that house. And that's how Leatherface knew where they were and killed Franklin.
This movie felt too real. Maybe thats why its disturbing.
