- Today we have to build the rear floor pan for the 1953 Chevy Chicken Truck project. Then DISASTER strikes on our 1977 Chevelle. Will I be forced to install a Fifi-tek, or can the quadrajet be revived?

Fun fact, I learned to weld in an elevator, so for me, Baroque and welding go hand in hand. Plus, despite what people say, Quradrajet carbs are easy to work on, you just have to put them together properly and they work, hope this helps!

Definitely one of my favorite projects on the face tube. I only watch real people doing cool things in their garage when I'm to lazy to work on my garbage keeps me motivated on my junk slowly making it better. Also your corking tool you made out of a shackle bushing. Mike Weber from Corn Field customs makes them out of a cheap hole punch for gasket making. I was fortunate enough to get meet him years ago and see him in action. Very humble man like you. Keep up the great work can't wait to see how you work though the custom bed and what not.

You are spot on, as usual. The most difficult part of that carburetor rebuild is the electric choke setting, absolutely the most tedious part. Absolutely loving this project.

My 62 has a 2 barrel and it does the same shit.

Just keep doing what you do. I've learned a lot from your videos. Learned a few things I didn't know. I'm currently work on a 1954 Chevy 3100.
In the 70's and early 80's I rebuilt quadrajets for 30 bucks plus the kit. The kits were about $12. The composite float would sometimes become saturated with gas. Had a scale to weigh them and a chart with the proper weight. Most of them were heavy so I began replacing all of them as part of the rebuild. There was also a foam piece you put in the well below those leaky plugs to stop the leak. On another note I had a customer who built a harpsichord from a kit and learned to play it. Thank you for reminding me of Barney who has long since passed. I enjoy your content and this old guy is learning from it. Keep 'em coming!
Great job on the quadrajet. I just watch a few TH-cam videos before I do any work on my vehicles. These phones are amazing. I'm 63 - the way I learned when I was a kid was the school of hard knocks lol.

Quadrajets are finicky, but just cleaning them thoroughly fixes a lot of problems as you've found out. another good video with good instruction on the chicken truck as well.

That budget tipping die worked fine, they doesnt always have to cost an arm or a leg. I have seen ppl using skateboard wheels as a lower tipping dies, but personally i have used only a plastic one or a steel ones. Keep it up!
Another awesome visit to your palatial estate to witness the spectacular transformation! I, too, have been into a slobberjet or 3 over the decades! My first experience was when my Dad had one torn down and sitting, spread out on a card table in the basement. A leg collapsed and....I'd never seen my Dad so angry, even for a hard-headed Norwegian!!! So that's how I learned! Thanks Kyle and anxiously await the next installment! Peace!
Great video Kyle a little bit about every thing and all interesting to watch, Carbs can give you fits BUT a whole lot easier for me to understand over fuel injection and all that ton of wiring. You said you didn’t feel like you provided much value and it reminded how I found your channel. I was looking for people who actually used old vehicles. Not customized show queens but used and maintained old vehicles. There aren’t many of those channels out there. Even though you’re not just driving around old cars and using them on this channel it’s obvious you do that in your actual life so it works for what I was searching for. And I enjoy restoration and cars so all together it just works. I hope your channel grows.
In my opinion the carburetor drama was a real showstopper. Sure... I'm like anybody else... I could watch a guy plug weld for hours, but ya just beat a good carb clean. Also, I'm finding myself more and more invested in this Chicken Truck project... I know you're not a painting guy but when this truck is done, I think it will be worthy of a bit of paint. I definitely agree on the simplicity of the old stuff. But like you said, no one today works on the old cars and bikes. I'm trying to save up for a second Harley. I had my bike since 1989. The old ones are better. I'm in Florida for the last 27 years , so a bike is an option over here. I try to never work on the cars or bike much in the summer. Too hot and too many bugs. Right now is the best time. Originally I'm from north NJ so I do know a little about snow and cold. Your channel is an inspiration and real , unlike many of the other Yt channels.

I also daily old cars, atleast in the summer. My winter beater is a 20 year old Land Cruiser.
But my next project is to get some paint on my 1980 hilux, and it will be my daily next winter :)

Lots of value! Seeing someone doing that he or she likes is always inspiring. Especially when if what they are doing isn’t considered ‘normal’ but to me your showing the essence of living, maybe even the meaning of life? To me it is ‘to make stuff and learn how to do that better’. And spend the least amount of time on shit you hate. Seems to me you got the balance right at the moment. Midweek magic -- yowsa! I was wondering exactly how you were going to do the bottom back corner of the cab. The more stuff that you do, the more confidence you gain, including with mechanic-type stuff. I follow some other channels where the whole thing is mechanic work, normally with old bone-yard relics (because they are cheap, and it is fun to see if you can make it work without breaking the bank, because if you pull it off you now have a new machine which you can use). Just like in your work, in some cases unseen major problems end up making something only suitable for the scrap bin. And keep the nice music coming!

Top tip. Might welding near a harpsichord require a co2 fire extinguisher and PPE.

You did a great job on the q jet. I am an old bastard and rebuilt a lot of them in my day. They are a great carburetor. Never let fear hold you back, the worst that can happen is you will learn something.

I had hardest time finding a local shop to rebuild my carb. I finally found one, they were expensive. After a 100 miles truck started running crappy and I noticed most of the bolts on the carb had rattled loose or were hand tight. I brought it back to the shop and the mechanic said “those 6 cylinders do that.” Yes. He actually said that with a straight face. Been on my own ever since. 😂

That was another super good video! And I finally learned what a "tipping die" does. For years, I thought it had something to do with cows. I've heard the Quadra-Jet bashers my whole life. I have no issues with them, myself. They came on old cars I bought, and I sure wasn't gonna buy new carbs when I could fix the old ones. I like the fact that they have bigger air holes in the rear part. And the name sounds faster, instead of Christmasy!
Carb cleaning tips from an old timer......Always disassemble carbs over a large shallow pan in order to contain dropped parts and always on a large clean uncluttered table.
Where could you find a clean uncluttered table in Kyle's shop? 😁

Wes over at Watch Wes Work had a q-jet that gave him fits. It ended up being the choke that was the problem. I am sure he would fill you in if your fixes fail you.
I enjoyed watching the Q-Jet rebuild. I think why they get a bad rep is because the secondary spring is not adjusted tight enough causing the secondaries to open too early resulting in a bog.

I remember when the quadrajet first came out (yes I'm old). Lots of hype from the magazines then, but they never seemed to be much of a performance carb compared to hollys or even carters. To this day I hate all carbs and love fuel injection. To me fuel injection is right in there with alternators and electronic ignition in improving reliability and reducing maintenance. Many of your readers won't agree, but I am very happy with my '52 3100 with its 5.3 chevy motor, a very reliable daily driver that requires far less tinkering and maintenance than engines from the good old days. Anyway, love to see you saving those old rust buckets.

Good job again. And, yes, I did like the composition for Harpsicord and MIG welder. You know the mig can be used a lot like a cymbal. Can you even find anyone nowadays that professionally rebuilds carburetors? They seem to just need to get the crud that gets past the filter cleaned out ever few years. Your Malibu seems to be starting right up. Nice! I had an old 6 cylinder Falcon that was like that. My collages at work were always impressed at how easily it started up "for an old car".

Hey, love the grill mockup. It is to big for the truck it seems. Can you remove the top bar and sides. Wondering if you tried to downsize it a bit if that would help. My experience is for what it’s worth, don’t decide on overall grill size until you get the top cut. But I do like that sweeping down grill with the sweeping down fender extensions. Buick fenders extensions just bolt on. Something to think about.😜
Nice work with the Malibu carb. Having been born quite a while ago I can remember when carburetors did not have all the extra plumbing and gadgetry attached. Much easier then. But you bravely departed from your area of expertise and confronted that thicket of vain anti-pollution contortions. And you prevailed. I salute you, even if maybe you just got lucky.

Sorry it took me so long to comment but we had a bit of a catastrophe here. The chicken that lays the eggs for my brownies was tragically killed trying to cross the road. Luckily a new chicken has been located. We really appreciate the soothing music in our time of mourning. I would put the soundtrack on my I phone if I had one. I watch a lot of restoration videos with people using very expensive tools with far lesser results. I really don't need to know how to use a power hammer. I learn a lot from your videos. Thank you for your time.

Quadrajet is a great carb..when running well far more efficient than a holley. And the sound of them drinking when you kickdown is priceless
It looks like an old steering wheel on your bead roller. I can see it gives you pretty good control as you pass a piece of metal through and must be better than the type of 'winding' handle that those things usually come with as standard.
Yes the steering wheel does work much better than the hand crank!

I worked on those QuadraJet back in the 70s. Loved them.
Anyone who thinks they are complicated should have to rebuild a 4bbl carb for 70s Mazda Rotary. The quadraJet is a breeze.

Enjoyed the carb rebuild. Pro tip: Next time instead of dropping small parts into the abyss you should definitely try firing them across the garage with compressed air while blowing out the passages.

My wife had a ‘75 Malibu Classic - at 7 or 8 years old I reformed the rear wheel arches with ‘glass (a LOT of glass). A couple years later the passenger side floor featured a length of 1 x 8 to keep the carpet off the top of the converter. At that point we got her a nicer car - a five year old K-car wagon. Yours is nice, but please stick to the truck - I’m having flashbacks.
Most of today's mechanbics just scratch their heads when they see anything other than a throttle body, either that or they want to load up the parts cannon to see what happens. Tuning those old carbs was an art, and it didn't matter if it was a Rochester, Holley or Carter or anyother make for that matter. Like welding you really needed an ear, eye and steady touch to adjust them. I still work on carbs for motorcycles but won't touch (refuse actually) a fly by wire or anything else. Its kind of fun being the local carburetor curmudgeon.

No doubt in my mind, the OG baroque composers were heavily influenced by early MIG craftsmen. 🤘🏼 The Gregorians were more than likely a bunch of hack stick welders.

Great video, the tip over die looked like it was a little bit of work but it did a great job. When you put the floor panel in I thought that’s a perfect fit almost like you had made it to just fit in there,oh that’s what you just did, and it worked. Loved the music to mig weld to. Who knew you could mig weld and play the harpsichord so well you are very talented And the transition to show off your mechanical expertise with the Q-jet was flawless. Ok enough clowning around, I wanted to DM you but I didn’t know how to. Two things sound sad news don’t know if you heard Gene Winfield is closing his shop down the end of this year wanted to send you a video about that. The other thing is Brent from Halfass Kustoms is working on a 49 gmc roadster custom with a removable Carson top. You should check it out he has done a lot of work on it. Later

The trick to any carburetor rebuild is don't disassemble it any farther than you have to. Just get it to where the jets and other orifices are exposed then tank it in carb cleaner. Let the cleaner do the work. Wash it out with water then air dry with compressed air. Set the float and install whatever new parts are required like accelerator pump and reassemble your FEW parts instead of the hundreds of parts you never needed to remove in the first place.
